“Troy Hooser’s 2013 Lecture”
This lecture is packed with new routines from the book “MOMENTS” and a few lost goodies
from his first book “DESTROYER’S” and “LECTURE NOTES FROM THE BASEMENT“.
Each routine is demonstrated and concisely explained. In addition, Troy describes all the
subtleties and finesses required to perform each routine.
Here’s a preview of the lecture:
Squeezed Away, the perfect opener for walk around, visual & strong coin magic easy to
do, gimmicked to the hilt but fun.
The Triple Threat, take your coin magic to the next level, routines and ideas with the
Triple Threat Gimmick.
Mask In Motion, an easy and fun to perform effect. A miniature mime mask
magically jumps from place to place of its own accord.
Ace Production, an easy to do production of a four of a kind with a kicker ending.
No gimmicked cards.
Troy’s #1 Card Fold, a unique approach to fold a card.
Rubber Lock, two rubber bands link, unlink then lock themselves together visually!
Bottomless Box, The Ribbons, a routine that is fun and visual for any audience
Sponge Balls And the Bottomless Box, fun and visual productions and vanishes with the
sponge balls and the box.
Other goodies like the dexterous ditch a method for ditching unwanted objects, in the
round the perfect sponge ball vanish, The Charming Chinese Challenge. The Breakless
Pass, around 12 to 15 routines and ideas

My Monthly Musings
Jim Harris, President
Happy New Year to all. I hope your holidays
were enjoyable and exceeded all your expectations.
Barb surprised me with a trip to the Magic Castle in
Hollywood last month, and it was awesome! Thanks
to Whit “Pop” Haydn (whom we met at the Unconventional Convention in Cumberland Falls) for getting
us in and showing us around.
I want to thank everyone for their confidence
in me during the recent LMC elections. Hopefully I
can live up to your expectations. My goal as president
will be simple: to help provide YOU with the magic
experience that you want and expect. Let me know
what I can do to help you meet your expectations. To
quote David Garrard: “Don’t forget, it’s all about the
magic”.

From the Editor:
“Goal Setting”
Every “new” year brings
about a bunch of talk of resolutions
and setting goals and I wanted to
briefly touch on a favorite method for setting goals but
also discuss a new one with you.
One method of setting goals is to use the acronym S.M.A.R.T.. Using this method does work
because you get very detailed about your goals. S.M.A.R.T. stands for; Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic and Time Specific. This method does
work and many businesses use it.
However I recently began reading a book by
my friend Vic Johnson called 52 Mondays: The One
Year Path To Outrageous Success & Lifelong Happiness. Now I can’t give too much away, because you
can buy the Kindle edition for around $2.99, but imagine what you could achieve in one year if every Monday was focused not only on your goal but on keeping
you focused on that goal and helping you to overcome
the fear of failure.
Michael

Meet Jim Harris, a.k.a. Uncle Red!

ing to make our club successful. In November, he was
elected President. Jim says he has learned more magic
in the past five years through the club than he did in
the previous twenty when he was on his own. He also
credits the club with giving him the opportunity to meet
and hang out with Lance Burton and Mac King.
Jim’s family is also very involved in magic. His wife,
Barb has been his main assistant from the very beginning. Daughter, Nicole was also recruited to join the
show and has had her head sawed off many times! She
is presently playing the part of Miss Direction for the
Action Brothers comedy magic team.
Jim lists Louisville magician, Bob Reams as a primary
influence. Bob took Jim under his wing and helped
shape him as a performer. Bob is still around but no
longer involved in magic.
Like many of us, Jim Harris’ beginnings in magic go
back many years. As a youngster, Jim saw a magician
perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. Several years later,
he saw two more magicians on a TV show called High
Varieties. These performances peaked Jim’s interest
enough that he sent for a catalog from Top Hat Magic
in Chicago and started buying tricks.
When Jim went to visit his sister, his niece and nephew
would say, “Uncle Red, show us some magic!” They
kids kept calling Jim that, and so when it came time to
come up with stage name, Jim decided Uncle Red would
do the trick. Today, Jim continues to be known by that
name as he performs for schools, churches, business
groups, club functions and at the Kentucky State Fair.
Jim’s involvement with the Louisville Magic Club began about five or six years ago. He attended a show by
Dinky Gowen and afterwards they talked. Dinky asked
Jim if he was a member of the club and Jim replied that
he didn’t even know there was such a thing. Dinky filled
him in and Jim got connected. This story underscores
the importance LMC members telling folks who show
interest in magic about the club. Nice job, Dinky!
Jim has served as a Vice President of our club for the
past several years and has done a tremendous job work-
Jim enjoys parlor magic most of all, and says that his
favorite trick to perform is Steve Dusheck’s RingerB a
trick where a ring appears on a key chain. Jim’s “current” favorite trick to watch is Whit Haydn’s 4 Ring
Routine. Jim and Barb recently visited the Magic Castle
and got to spend some time with Whit.
In real life, Jim works as a mechanical engineer for the
Batsner Company. He designs, builds and sells mechanical systems for the bulk handling industry. Jim
has been with Batsner since 1985 and hopes to retire in
a few more years. That will just give him more time to
devote to magic!
