What is Stromberg GFRC?
The process of creating Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete
elements begins with the customer’s vision. Our inhouse design team, architects, and engineers work
with the client to capture the idea on paper. After the
drawings are approved, our sculptors carve a model.
A mold is then made of fiberglass, steel, wood, or
rubber, depending on the level of detail desired. Then,
a carefully designed mixture of cement, fine aggregate,
crushed stone, polymer additives, and alkali-resistant
glass fibers is sprayed into the mold and allowed to
cure. Once the piece is removed from the mold, it is
virtually indistinguishable from architectural precast
or carved stoned. The major difference between GFRC
and precast is weight. While a 4” thick panel of precast
weighs 45 lbs. per square foot, a GFRC panel of the
same size weighs about 5 or 6 lbs. The glass fibers give
GFRC its tensile strength, while the concrete gives it
compressive strength and makes it weather resistant.

How Strong is Stromberg GFRC?
Stromberg GFRC is an engineered material, and its
properties can vary depending on mix design, glass
content, and production methods. The glass fibers used
to make quality GFRC have a higher tensile strength than
steel. As a general rule, the higher the fiber content, the
stronger the GFRC. A typical GFRC mix with 5% glass
fiber has a compressive strength of 8,000 to 10,000 psi.
How Can I Use Stromberg GFRC?
GFRC can be used wherever a light, strong, weather
resistant, attractive, and fire-retardant material is
required.
GFRC can be used to manufacture numerous architectural
products, such as wall panels, window surrounds,
column covers, soffits, cornices, brackets, quoins,
railings, pilasters, copings, domes, site furnishings,
planters, bollards, urns, and tables.
Stromberg has pioneered the use of GFRC in other
applications as well, including GFRC sandwich panels,
bus shelters, security barriers, noise barriers, marine
structures, and sun screens.

How Durable is Stromberg GFRC?
Stromberg’s GFRC has been tested in the laboratory, through accelerated aging
tests, and in the field. GFRC can be expected to last as long as precast concrete.
In many environments, including those that are exposed to salt spray or receive
high levels of moisture, GFRC can be expected to perform better. This is because
there is no steel reinforcement to corrode. Since the surface of GFRC is a Portland
concrete, it weathers in much the same manner as quality precast architectural
concrete.

•GFRC is made of minerals and will not burn. In addition, the nature of
concrete allows it to act as a thermal regulator when exposed to flame.
GFRC will not burn, and it will also protect the materials behind it from the
heat of the flame.
•GFRC is light compared to traditional stone, concrete, or terra cotta ornaments.
Installing GFRC elements and panels is quick and relatively easy.
•GFRC can be cast into virtually any shape. We supply wall panels, columns,
bas relief, domes, column capitals, fireplace surrounds, moldings,
medallions, and all types of custom shapes.
•GFRC elements can be cast with integral colors or textures, such as limestone,
precast, coral stone, and many more. GFRC is also available in a paint
grade that is easily finished with virtually any paint.
