Any seed listed as organic has been certified organic in its country of origin. ASCOT is 12km north of the Western freeway, which by-passes Ballarat, on the C287, the Clunes-Maryborough Road, about halfway between Miners Rest and Clunes. 2 Flower Seeds We are offering a terrific selection of flower seeds in this catalogue. Many are new strains from the world’s best breeders and many are old favourites that used to flourish in our grandparents’ gardens. Most varieties listed need no special skills to grow well and are happy sown in situ. We use many of the annuals you can find in this catalogue in our own flower gardens which are well worth a visit. The use of annuals and biennials are such an important part of gardening. They bring so much joy, trigger so many memories. The seeds we sell are imported from the best breeders and suppliers in Europe and the USA. We buy seed in relatively small amounts so that we always sell fresh seed with excellent germination rates. Sowing instructions are on the seed packets. 3 Amaranthus (Love-Lies-Bleeding) So much beauty for so little effort. Amaranthus are such easily grown annuals which will self sow every year to give a fantastic summer and autumn display. Sow seeds in situ in a sunny spot from early spring, in warm areas, to late spring in cold districts. Thin resulting seedlings to 40-50cm apart. All are impressive cut flowers and bold garden plants. Amaranthus ‘Green Thumb’ Amaranthus ‘Emerald Tassels’ Amaranthus gangeticus ‘Carnival’ The most effective way I’ve grown this was as a backdrop to lime green Zinnias and a greenish white sunflower. Dwarf sunflower ‘Calypso Spray’ 20 seeds $5.00 Dwarf Sunflower ‘Classic Spray’ 20 seeds $5.00 Dwarf Sunflower ‘Ice Spray’ 20 seeds $5.00 Dwarf Sunflower ‘Summer spray’ 20 seeds $5.00 15 Pollen-free Sunflowers These are the result of many years of hard work from an Australian flower breeder. Until recently all his seed was sold to commercial cut flower growers. The big advantage that the pollen-free sunflowers have over traditional sorts is that they last much longer when picked. Each flower also lasts much longer in the garden than older varieties. The following are all branching varieties. If you want them for cut flowers then nip out the leader when it reaches 25cm in height. If you want a fine garden plant let it grow naturally giving it about 60cm space. They grow from 150 to 180cm tall depending on soil conditions. I generally plant sunflower seed 1cm deep from November until January but October wouldn’t be too early and in warmer gardens seed can be planted in September. They don’t need a lot of extra irrigation and are happiest in full sun. This seed is far and away better than the seed offered in garden centres and big box stores. We offer very little “heirloom” vegetable seed as in our opinion “heirloom” seed, is more often than not, second rate. Vegetables grown from our seed have terrific flavour, excellent germination rates and good disease resistance. They are generally quicker to reach harvesting stage and are slower to bolt than “heirloom” types. Most varieties we sell have been trialled over the past few years in our large and productive vegetable garden. Much of the seed we sell is hybrid seed. It is not genetically engineered seed. To quote the late Lawrence D. Hills, a renowned advocate for organic vegetable growing and founder of the Henry Doubleday Foundation (now Garden Organic) in the UK. “Scientific and accurate breeding programmes have made it possible not only to bring out the outstanding qualities of the parent plants, but in most cases, these qualities have been enhanced and new desirable characteristics added to the resulting hybrid plants. In addition to qualities like good vigour, trueness to type, heavy yields and high uniformity which hybrid plants enjoy, other characteristics such as earliness, disease resistance and good holding ability have been incorporated into most F1 hybrids. “We can’t expect to get all these advantages for nothing because creating F1 hybrids involves many years of preparation. So you often have to pay more for your seed or get fewer in a packet. It works both ways. The gardener gets better, though more expensive varieties and the plant breeder gets a reasonable return on the investment.” Storing Seed We buy our seed in relatively small quantities which means our seed is really fresh. If stored properly all will be viable for several years. Our seed comes to you in an airtight plastic envelope which can be resealed. Place the seed packet in a plastic food container in the fridge with a water absorbing gel. Fluctuating temperatures and dampness are the enemy of long term seed viability. Parsnip though should be bought fresh each year. We throw any leftover parsnip seed away and buy new stock every year. Lambley Nursery is a GM free zone. 21 Asian Vegetables Chinese Cabbage ‘Minuet F1’ Chinese Cabbage ‘Rubicon F1’ Suited to year round production this is a closed head mini type with attractive yellow interiors.
