We are thrilled to welcome you to the inaugural Sonoma County
Barrel Auction. This event presents the very best Sonoma
County has to offer, showcasing the stylistic range and worldclass quality of the region.
Curated by an elite panel of Master Sommeliers and Master of
Wine, these wine auction lots were handcrafted by legendary
vintners from some of the most acclaimed vineyards in Sonoma
County. These incredible “never before, never again wines”
are truly one-of-a-kind and this is your chance to taste — and
acquire— a masterpiece.
Our AVAs define the diversity of Sonoma County. This renowned
wine region exhibits a greater variety of grapes and wine styles
than you will find in any other area. The size and distance
between these distinctive AVAs ensures individualism of wines,
wine styles, viticultural approaches and myriad philosophies
of winemaking. Sonoma County’s range in geography and
soil types—valleys to mountains, coastal ranges to inland
benchlands— is second to none.
We are grateful to our vintner donors and partners, who have
generously provided the wines. We want to thank all of our 2015
Founding Sponsors for their generous support.
We know you are ready to explore and taste over 70 one-of-akind wines from this world-class region. Now — let’s begin!
Corey Beck – President, Sonoma County Vintners
Carolyn Stark – Executive Director, Sonoma County Vintners

Complexity and character make wine critics wax poetic. But you only need a
Sonoma County road map to understand why they get so lyrical. There are tall
mountains and a dramatic ocean, and hillsides planted with vineyards cooled by
coastal breezes. We’re blessed with an embarrassment of terroir, a multitude of
microclimates. Surprising wines just naturally take root in such a place. Sonoma
County is 52 miles wide and 47 miles long — and we figure those dimensions
make for a generous-sized tasting room.

Our home is home to over 60,000 acres of vineyards and more than 400
wineries. Within our borders that stretch from the Pacific Coast in the west to
the Mayacamas Mountains in the east are 17 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs)
– each with its own distinctive character. There are tall mountains and a dramatic
ocean, inland hillsides planted with prized varietals and coastal vineyards cooled
by sea breezes. When our multitude of soil types are considered along with the
countless micro-climates found here, it’s easy to see that we are blessed with
an embarrassment of terroir riches. Beautiful wines of superior quality flourish
here, thanks to Sonoma County’s multi-generational winegrowers and vintners,
who created a legacy of sustainable practices that are the foundation of this
world-renowned wine region.

TOP VARIETALS: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc,
The newest Sonoma County AVA, Fountaingrove encompasses 38,000 acres in eastern
Sonoma County. Its most remarkable feature is elevation, up to more than 2,000 feet in
places, as well as marine influence that flows in through a gap in the Sonoma Mountains.
GREEN VALLEY
2,860 vineyard acres / 10 wineries
TOP VARIETALS: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay
Located within Russian River Valley but slightly cooler and with sandy soils, Pinot Noir
and Chardonnay thrive in Green Valley for both still and sparkling wines. Distinctive
cool-climate Syrah also shines.
www.greenvalley-russianriver.com
KNIGHTS VALLEY
2,496 vineyard acres / 2 wineries
TOP VARIETALS: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot
Protected from direct Pacific Ocean influence, Knights Valley is the warmest of the
county’s appellations. Bordeaux varietals – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot,
and Malbec for the reds; Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon for the whites – thrive here,
producing complex and enjoyable Meritage blends.
MOON MOUNTAIN DISTRICT
1,500 vineyard acres / 11 wineries
TOP VARIETALS: Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah
Towering above the eastside of Sonoma Valley in the Mayacamas range is Moon Mountain AVA.
The designation helps explain the differences between valley- and mountain-grown
grapes, as well as how farming high elevations can be challenging, yet rewarding. Some
of the finest high elevation Cabernet Sauvignon in the state is found here.

TOP VARIETALS: Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel
Spreading west of Lake Sonoma to the Mendocino County border, it is known for
intensely-flavored red grape varietals with great concentration and balance.
RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY
13,896 vineyard acres / 50 wineries
TOP VARIETALS: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir
The confluence of well-drained, soils, maritime and river influences providing cooling

For today’s auction, the Sonoma County Barrel Auction is proud to welcome
auctioneers Michael Davis and Marc Smoler of Hart Davis Hart Wine Co.
Founded in late 2004, HDH brought together three legends of the rare wine
market: renowned rare wine purveyor John Hart along with Michael Davis
and Paul Hart previously with Sotheby’s, Davis & Co., and Christie’s. The trio
have a combined experience of nearly 75 years in the field of rare wines.
With a loyal and trusting international following, the firm has emerged as an
industry powerhouse, dominating sales in the U.S. since 2010.
Over the course of his career, Michael Davis has worked closely with virtually
every prominent wine collector in the U.S and many abroad, and numerous
record prices have been set under his gavel. His insight on the rare wine
market is highly sought by television, radio, and print media, and he has been
interviewed by CNN, NPR, virtually all wine consumer publications, as well as
Time, Town & Country, Robb Report, W, and most leading newspapers across
the country.
Marc Smoler, a graduate of the esteemed Cornell School of Hotel
Administration, the premier hospitality education institution in the world,
joined HDH in 2007. Marc was deeply involved with the firm’s marketing
efforts during its formative years, and he was instrumental in forging
valuable relationships with private collectors, sommeliers, restaurateurs and
other members of the trade. He is now a member of consignment team, and
regularly shares the gavel with other HDH auctioneers in Chicago.

of bold, powerful reds, and A. Rafanelli Winery and
Vineyards is its ultimate luxury Zinfandel, Cabernet
Sauvignon and Merlot producer. The Rafanelli
Family, now in its fourth generation overseeing this
benchmark location, is offering five cases of a highly
specialized blend that’s not available to the general
public. The wine was crafted with grapes carefully
selected from the two hillside Cabernet vineyards and
Merlot taken from three different locations and using
three different clones. This hand-selected fruit was
crafted into a Bordeaux-style blend that is classically
structured, boasting complex layers of dark fruit. It’s a
wine that reflects the unique characteristics of the Dry
Creek Valley appellation, created especially for this
occasion by the masters of this AVA.

ABOUT THE WINE
Anakota is known for its exquisite single vineyard,

Pierre Seillan hand selected his favorite Cabernet
Sauvignon lots from the estate-owned Helena
Montana Vineyard and the Helena Dakota Vineyard
at the base of Mount St. Helena, where gravelly
volcanic soils stress the vines. Here the fruit develops
deep, dark fruit flavors, brightened by candied cherry
and scented by smoke and spice over powerful,
muscular tannins. This extraordinary wine celebrates
the depth of Sonoma County vineyards, and the
singular expression of Knights Valley. With lush fruit
and layers of nuanced complexity, it’s worthy of

ABOUT THE WINE
Sonoma County’s Bacigalupi family earned worldwide
recognition during the 1976 Paris tasting when
the 1973 Napa Valley Chardonnay from Château
Montelena—made with 40% of the family’s fruit—
triumphed over many acclaimed French wines. This
event was the turning point in America’s global
wine image, and the prestigious fruit from this
Sonoma County farming family has continued to
enjoy its reputation as some of the County’s best.
This 2014 Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay, crafted
by Winemaker Ashley Herzeberg, is 100% Wente
Clone, and is collected from a very small section of
the Goddard Ranch vineyard that was planted from
cuttings of the original Paris Tasting Block. This highly
specialized, carefully maintained block historically
produces some of the best flavors on the Bacigalupi
ranch, but it’s typically too small to create a separate
Chardonnay bottling for their portfolio—making this
lot a must-have for the aficionado who seeks only

ABOUT THE WINE
Daniel wines are age-worthy, single-vineyard wines
that epitomize the partnership between grower and
winemaker. Winemaker Dan Fitzgerald is an alum
of legendary pinot noir producers Williams Selyem,
Robert Sinskey Winery, and James Halliday’s Cold
Spring Hills in the Yarra Valley. For the inaugural Barrel
Auction, Dan crafted a wine that marries Sonoma
County’s Zinfandel heritage with world-class pinot
noir winemaking. The Daniel Ancient Vine Zinfandel
begins in the Clopton Ranch Vineyard in the heart of
the Russian River Valley. This cool-climate, dry farmed
vineyard was planted more than a century ago with
a field blend of Zinfandel plus Teroldego, Alicante
Bouschet, Carignane and Petite Sirah. Dan employed
the light touch of a pinot noir winemaker, using
open top fermenters, gentle pulse-air technology,
and neutral French barrels to create a wine with a
velvety mouthfeel and fresh acidity, balanced with
the intensity and concentration of an ancient vine
Zinfandel. Previous vintages from this vineyard have

trellising and clones. For this very special lot, he
looked to the middle reach of the Russian River Valley
and specifically to the famed Bucher Vineyard located
on Westside Road. Donatiello brings together two
of his favorite blocks: Tory’s and North L, and two
clones Pommard and 777, and the combination has
resulted in an exquisite wine with lively fruit, a dusting
of spice and rich, earthy qualities. Its deep nuance is
the result of the masterful combination of the clones:
Pommard clone exhibits an elegance that emphasizes
both earthiness and higher-toned fruit; 777 clone
adds bold fruit qualities and the silky velvety mouth
feel for which the Russian River Valley is known. It’s a
wine that expresses the joy of its winemaker, and an
elegant addition to any collector’s cellar.

distinctive wines from one of California’s most

vineyards and have curated fruit from an array of
unique, tucked-away locations that offer unmatched

a wild, untouched landscape with vines that date
back to 1886. Vineyard Manager Paul Bernier claims
this storied spot is actually “an open-air grape

up to the name. Here, you’ll find a glimpse of Dry
Creek Vineyard’s history in the site’s field blend of

with this very special barrel selection of Pinot Noir

Our Bacigalupi Pinot Noir lot comes from the

ABOUT THE WINE
When the original vineyards were planted in the
mid-80s for Gloria Ferrer’s sparkling wine program,
only two clones were used: one Chardonnay and
one Pinot Noir. At that time, diverse Pinot Noir
clonal selection in California was in its infancy and
no formal evaluation had been done for California
sparkling wine production. Gloria Ferrer set out to
change that, partnering with UC Davis to conduct
two studies. It took more than a decade, but these
studies determined which clones would give the very
best expression of their estate. Today, there are five
Chardonnay and 16 Pinot Noir clones in production
for their sparkling and still wine programs. Last year,
visiting members of the trade picked a portion of
these grapes during Gloria Ferrer’s Hands on Harvest

ABOUT THE WINE
Founded in 1972 by Tom and Sally Jordan, Jordan
Vineyard & Winery has set the standard for Sonoma
County Cabernet Sauvignon Bordeaux-style blends
for 40 years. Under the guidance of secondgeneration vintner John Jordan and Rob Davis,
the winemaker whose hands have crafted every
vintage of Jordan since the inaugural 1976, Jordan
Vineyard & Winery continues to innovate and elevate.
Every vintage of Jordan Alexander Valley Cabernet
Sauvignon since the inaugural 1976 release has been
aged in a combination of new and used French and
American oak barrels — until now. 2014 is the first
vintage in which Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon will be
aged only in French oak, and only in new and oneyear-old barrels. This 2014 Jordan Alexander Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon “barrel blend” is drawn from
a single, new, French Oak barrel, sourced from the
Colbert area within Tronçais. John and Rob believe
the French oak will provide more richness and length
to the wine as it ages, creating a balance between
oak and fruit tannins. You’ll discover surprisingly
soft, round fruit tannins on the palate, aromatics of
bright cherry and cranberry, as well as lush notes of
blackberry and cassis, balanced by flavors of sweet
tobacco and cocoa powder across the mid-palate.

ABOUT THE WINE
Thinking small has resulted in big success for Inman
Family Wines. Owner and Winemaker Kathleen Inman
focuses solely on small lots made from impeccably
grown grapes in the Russian River Valley and the
Sonoma Coast. Her emphasis on what she calls “eco
ethics,” combined with her desire to craft complex
wines with a nuanced sense of place, has helped
Inman Family Wines build a foundation of excellence
that’s evident in every bottle. This elegant, silky, small
lot Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is the result of 100%
whole cluster fermentation using native yeast and only
organically farmed estate Clones 115, 667, 828 and
777. As savory as it is fruity, as floral as it is earthy, the
whole-cluster treatment raises the aromatics and adds
to the complexity. It’s a rare wine from an esoteric
producer, and a catch for the collector who values
quality and scarcity.

ABOUT THE WINE
Originally planted in the 1880s, Laurel Glen Vineyard

California’s iconic Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards. The
present-day vineyard was developed in the 1970s from
Cabernet vines already existing on the property. In
1994, UC Davis recognized the Laurel Glen clone as a
unique clone of Cabernet Sauvignon. Despite its small
production, the wines receive international acclaim
for their exceptional elegance. Winemaker Randall

outstanding 2013 vintage that best expresses the
pairing of a unique clone and a unique site. The fruit is
carefully hand sorted and then fermented using native

ABOUT THE WINE
The Martinelli family’s wine journey began in the
Russian River Valley more than 130 years ago when
Italian winemaker Giuseppe Martinelli arrived in
Sonoma County with a dream of planting vineyards.
His vines flourished, and the Martinelli family is firmly
ensconced in the Sonoma County wine industry,
providing grapes to some of our most revered
local wineries. In fact, the family sells more grapes
than they make into their own wine, making this
lot a rare discovery. This Russian River Pinot Noir is
the Martinelli family’s favorite barrel blend of two
vineyards: Moonshine Ranch and Reserve Vineyard.
The Moonshine Vineyard rows were planted more
than 20 years ago with wide enough spacing between
them that the family was able to add cuttings from
the original Reserve Vineyard in between each row in
order to preserve its heritage. This Russian River Pinot
Noir barrel blend marries the characteristics of these
two vineyards—now growing side by side—for the
first time ever. It’s a classic Sonoma County Pinot Noir
that reveals rich layers of fruit, a supple mouthfeel and
bright acid balance.

ABOUT THE WINE
The Uboldi family arrived in Kenwood from Northern
Italy in the late 1800s, and the vines on the Uboldi
ranch were planted around 1920 by neighbors and
friends who filled it out with varietals from their own
Sonoma Valley farms. While the normal varieties
are easily distinguishable (mainly Alicante Bouchet,
Zinfanel, Carignane and Petite Sirah), the naked
eye can see over a dozen different vinifera species
in this special vineyard, including Dolcetto, Mataro
and even the hybrid variety Lenoir. This is the first
time Winemaker Kate Madigan has created a special
“Mixed Blacks” blend as a celebration of this heritage

history. It promises to capture classic California fruitforward flavors combined with a complex structure
that allows for long aging.

ABOUT THE WINE
Adam and Dianna Lee have created one of the
most diverse single-vineyard Pinot Noir portfolios
in Sonoma County. They have a curator’s eye for
unique sites, and what they’ve created for this highly
specialized lot is no exception. The Jackson Vineyard
in Amador County was one of seven experimental
vineyards planted around California by U.C. Berkeley
professor Eugene Hilgard in the 1880s. The vineyard
was subsequently lost and forgotten until it was
rediscovered in the early 1960s by plant pathologist
Dr. Austin Goheen, who had a unique mission to
collect cuttings from vines planted before Europe’s
phylloxera plague. He propagated these healthy,
historic vines (now known as Clone 9), and now they
flourish in the Siduri Pratt Vineyard—Sexton Road,
west of Sebastopol. Farmed meticulously by Jim Pratt,
only 2.57 tons were picked, and they were fermented
as a separate lot. This barrel lot offers a glimpse into
California’s winegrowing heritage, and it will be the
only Jackson Clone lot bottled from this one-of-a-kind
location.

ABOUT THE WINE

a definitive sense of place. There are nine Pinot Noir
clones present on the site within four distinct vineyard
blocks. This Pinot Noir was harvested from two
sections, one planted in 2007 and the other in 2009,
and with 2 specific clones—943 & Calera. Winemaker
Ben Cane chose the Calera clone which brings a
fine, yet powerful, tannin structure complemented
by the more delicate and feminine clone 943 with its
blue fruit and velvety finish. The wine opens with a
profound, complex aroma of blackcurrants, cinnamon
and Christmas spice, layered with graham cracker,
red earth and moist forest floor. On the palate, baking
spices deliver a full, round, palate of fine grained
tannins and creaminess alongside plum skin, black
cherry and cocoa nibs, extending to a mocha essence

To protect their meticulously cared-for grapes, Pride

Budwood for this special vineyard block of Cabernet
Sauvignon, named after founder Jim Pride, was taken
from Rock Arch Vineyard, the oldest block on the
estate and a major contributor to the winery’s Reserve
Cabernet Sauvignon, a frequent recipient of 95 to 99

this single vineyard are known for concentrated, deep

dramatic structure and a lush mid-palate. Blue fruit,
black cherry and boysenberry flavors dominate a wine

was one of the early vintners to focus on these
varietals, planting diverse array of four clones of
Syrah, Grenache, Counoise, Mourvedre, Viognier and
Roussanne in 2002. Winemaker Ben Cane suggested
that “whilst our Annadel Gap site is much cooler than
Chateauneuf de Pape, this unique 50/50 blend of
Syrah and Grenache is reminiscent of cooler northern
Rhone or Vacqueras regions. The cool fog and winds
give us ample time to produce complex aromatic and

It all started in Sonoma County back in 1857. Guess that makes us early pioneers,
but the vision is always about the next vintage. Over a century later, that sense of
anticipation and discovery is something our winemakers aim to capture, bottle
and cork. It might be a classic Old Vine Zin or a daring Pinot Noir from a couple
of local boys. Critical acclaim, innovation and cutting edge technology are truly
exciting, but perhaps like you, our first reaction is a bit more pragmatic —
