But you only need a Sonoma County road map to understand why they get so lyrical. There are tall mountains and a dramatic ocean, and hillsides planted with vineyards cooled by coastal breezes. We’re blessed with an embarrassment of terroir, a multitude of microclimates. Surprising wines just naturally take root in such a place. Sonoma County is 52 miles wide and 47 miles long — and we figure those dimensions make for a generous-sized tasting room. WeAreSonomaCounty.com Sonoma County’s multigenerational winegrowers and vintners have a legacy of sustainable practices that are the foundation of this world-renowned wine region. a b o u t s o n o m a c o u n t y Our home is home to over 60,000 acres of vineyards and more than 400 wineries. Within our borders that stretch from the Pacific Coast in the west to the Mayacamas Mountains in the east are 17 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) – each with its own distinctive character. There are tall mountains and a dramatic ocean, inland hillsides planted with prized varietals and coastal vineyards cooled by sea breezes. When our multitude of soil types are considered along with the countless micro-climates found here, it’s easy to see that we are blessed with an embarrassment of terroir riches. Beautiful wines of superior quality flourish here, thanks to Sonoma County’s multi-generational winegrowers and vintners, who created a legacy of sustainable practices that are the foundation of this world-renowned wine region. Winemaker Dan Fitzgerald is an alum of legendary pinot noir producers Williams Selyem, Robert Sinskey Winery, and James Halliday’s Cold Spring Hills in the Yarra Valley. For the inaugural Barrel Auction, Dan crafted a wine that marries Sonoma County’s Zinfandel heritage with world-class pinot noir winemaking. This cool-climate, dry farmed vineyard was planted more than a century ago with a field blend of Zinfandel plus Teroldego, Alicante Bouschet, Carignane and Petite Sirah. Dan employed the light touch of a pinot noir winemaker, using open top fermenters, gentle pulse-air technology, and neutral French barrels to create a wine with a velvety mouthfeel and fresh acidity, balanced with the intensity and concentration of an ancient vine Zinfandel. Against the advice of nearly everyone around him, Dave took a risk and planted the varietal he was most passionate about. It worked. For more than four decades, Dry Creek Vineyard has been a leader and innovator in Sauvignon Blanc flavor profiles, techniques and consumer awareness. Winemaker Teresa Heredia has built upon the winery’s already stunning reputation with this very special barrel selection of Pinot Noir from the famed Bacigalupi Vineyard. The Bacigalupi family was among the first in the region to plant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay — in 1964. Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay made up 40% of the celebrated ’73 Chateau Montelana Chardonnay that won first place in the historic 1976 Judgment of Paris Tasting. Our Bacigalupi Pinot Noir lot comes from the Bacigalupi Vineyard’s Frost Ranch, just across the road from the original mid-1960s plantings. Heredia judiciously incorporated 30% whole cluster to this Wente clone fermentation to accentuate the structure, concentration and flavor profile of the wine. At that time, diverse Pinot Noir clonal selection in California was in its infancy and no formal evaluation had been done for California sparkling wine production. Gloria Ferrer set out to change that, partnering with UC Davis to conduct two studies. It took more than a decade, but these studies determined which clones would give the very best expression of their estate. Today, there are five Chardonnay and 16 Pinot Noir clones in production for their sparkling and still wine programs. COUNT AGOSTON HARASZTHY, FOUNDER Buena Vista Winery, est. 1857 SONOMA VALLEY, SONOMA COUNTY WE ARE NEW GUARD. DAN KOSTA AND MICHAEL BROWNE, FOUNDERS Kosta Browne Winery, est. 1997 RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY, SONOMA COUNTY Painting by: Stanislas Kostka WE ARE SONOMA COUNTY. It all started in Sonoma County back in 1857. Guess that makes us early pioneers, but the vision is always about the next vintage. Over a century later, that sense of anticipation and discovery is something our winemakers aim to capture, bottle and cork. It might be a classic Old Vine Zin or a daring Pinot Noir from a couple of local boys. Critical acclaim, innovation and cutting edge technology are truly exciting, but perhaps like you, our first reaction is a bit more pragmatic — Where's the corkscrew? HALLBERG VINEYARD PLANTED IN 2000 Green Valley of the Russian River Valley SONOMA COUNTY WE ARE SONOMA COUNTY. By some cosmic act of great fortune, Sonoma County won the geological lottery. The distinctive microclimates, the grape-intensifying soil, the morning coastal fog, the redwoods and mountains that tumble down to the Pacific. This is the epicenter of wine, and boy, are we glad to be here. Around every bend there’s a new discovery and an unforgettable wine. The knotty part? You show up at the last winery at 3:59 – right before closing. But then we say, “Come on in, we’re pouring the Reserve Chard.” How nice is that? WeAreSonomaCounty.com Sonoma County’s multigenerational winegrowers and vintners have a legacy of sustainable practices that are the foundation of this world-renowned wine region.
