Welcome to Rivers Hospital
Welcome to Rivers Hospital, part of the Ramsay Health Care Group and a
leading private hospital, situated in quiet landscaped grounds in Sawbridgeworth,
Hertfordshire, just 25 minutes from London Stansted Airport. The hospital opened in
1992 and has received constant investment since then resulting in the latest medical
facilities for diagnosis and treatment.
Each patient can enjoy complete privacy and comfort during their stay in one of 59
en-suite bedrooms, equipped with satellite television, telephone and Wi Fi. Our highly
trained team of nurses and healthcare assistants provide exemplary care throughout
each patient’s stay.
Private patients benefit from rapid access to this high quality clinical care through our
Premium Care service. This is offered to those with private medical insurance and
those who self-pay, and is described in more detail on page 5.
The hospital is regulated and audited by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The
latest inspection report can be viewed at www.cqc.org.uk
We are proud to work in partnership with some of the best qualified and most experienced
consultants locally most of whom also have substantive posts within the NHS. A full list of
their names and special interests can be found in the second part of this guide. We
have also included information on the hospital’s services, referral processes, and how
we can support you with education and training. We hope you will find the information
useful but please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or if we can help in

Why Refer Privately
Almost £1 billion a year is forfeited by the NHS treating patients with private medical
insurance who could fund their own treatment. Not just this but there are a number of
reasons why referring privately might be beneficial:
•
For rapid access to diagnosis and treatment, appointments are guaranteed within
72 hours.
•
For consultant-led care and if you want to refer to a particular consultant.
•
If your patient wants to choose a convenient appointment time.
•
If your patient wants to recuperate in a private ensuite bedroom.
•
For procedures of limited clinical effectiveness not currently being funded by the NHS.
•
If your patient has private health insurance.
Self-pay Patients
Many operations, particularly day case procedures, are more affordable than you may
think and at Ramsay Health Care we have noticed an increase in patients choosing to
pay for their own treatment. Our Fixed Cost Care scheme is designed to offer a range
of all-inclusive package prices to cover all nursing and medical care, the hospital stay
and consultants’ fees. This gives patients the peace of mind of knowing everything
they need is covered.
Insured Patients
Rivers Hospital is accepted by and has direct payment agreements with all of the major
health insurance companies, including BUPA and AXA-PPP.

include electrotherapy, shockwave, exercise, manual therapy, sports massage and
aquatic therapy.
The Physiotherapy department is staffed by professional and experienced clinical
Chartered Physiotherapists. They work to Physiotherapy Chartered Society Standards
supporting best practice and excellence in patient care.
The department contains six spacious treatment rooms and a large fully equipped
gym. All physiotherapy patients have a treatment plan established on assessment by
their physiotherapist, which is regularly reviewed during the course of physiotherapy
treatment.
Referrals are accepted from Consultants and GP’s. Self-paying patients may refer
themselves for physiotherapy. Discharge reports are sent to the patient and their GP
or Consultant when the patient has completed treatment. Packages of care can be

Back Pain and Spinal Care
Who can benefit?
Treatments are aimed at people suffering from chronic back pain which does not
seem to be resolving or who have a diagnosed condition for which surgery or
injections are recommended. We offer a wide range of treatments for back problems,
from pain management through to complex spinal surgery. We have the specialist
consultants and diagnostic equipment to pinpoint the cause of pain and recommend
an appropriate intervention. Our care does not end when patients leave hospital after
a procedure. In many cases, we will arrange physiotherapy as an important part of
rehabilitation and patients may need to return for a follow up appointment.
What treatments are available?
Injections
Injections to relieve pain and allow other therapies a better chance of working are an
important weapon in the armoury of our consultants. Injections are carried out as day
case procedures while under sedation, and patients are able to leave hospital within a
few hours. While they don’t ‘cure’ a bad back, they should help patients to get better.
Facet joint injections
These are normally carried out in either the cervical (neck) or lumbar (lower back)
joints. Facet joints are situated between each vertebra; they help to stabilise the spine
while allowing movement, however they can become painful if the joint becomes
overloaded. This pain can make it hard to benefit from other treatments, such as
physiotherapy.
Nerve root blocks
Persistent back pain can sometimes be due to irritation of the nerves in the spine.
This can be caused by tissue adhesions and may be associated with former trauma
or surgery to the spine. Injecting the nerve root with a mixture of local anaesthetic
and anti-inflammatory called cortisone can be an effective way of reducing the pain in
these cases.
Surgery
Surgery can sound frightening but it often has very good outcomes and does not
involve a lengthy stay in hospital. Our consultants will be able to advise whether
surgery is suitable for a condition and expected outcomes.
18
Screening Services
Rivers Hospital provides a range of screening services that patients can self-refer for.
These services include:
Aortic Aneurysm Screening
The aorta is the largest artery in the body and delivers blood from the heart to every
part of the body in its journey through the chest and abdomen. If an artery becomes
abnormally wide or swollen we call this swollen section an aneurysm.
A simple ultrasound examination that takes about 10 minutes and will show whether
you have an aneurysm or not and determine its size. You should be aware that the
examination will be performed by a Radiologist who will undertake no other duty
than to give an opinion on the presence and estimated size of an abdominal aortic
aneurysm. You will be told immediately whether you have an abdominal aortic
aneurysm or not and if you need any follow up. No other diagnosis will be made.
Breast Screening
Mammography is essential for early detection of potential breast problems when
combined with routine self-breast examinations. Screening mammography is an x-ray
examination to help detect early signs of breast disease and is available to women
over the age of 40 who are asymptomatic (have no breast problems).
Our mammograms are double reported (in line with NHS BSP Guidelines) by highly
trained Consultant Radiologists who specialize in breast imaging. Results are sent
directly to you with a copy sent to your GP.
Cervical smears
Cervical screening is a test to check the health of the cervix, which is the lower part
of the womb. For many women the test results show that everything is fine, however
for one in 10 women the test shows changes in the cells that can be caused by many
things. Most of these changes will not lead to serious conditions although some
changes may need monitoring or treatment.
CT Calcium Scoring
Rivers Hospital’s CT Heartscan™ uses Calcium Scoring technology to detect and
measure calcium in your coronary arteries. If calcium is detected it is likely that
coronary artery disease could be present.
19
Screening Services
More importantly if no calcium is detected, this suggests you are at low risk of a
heart attack. Our scanner can detect calcium at a very early stage of coronary artery
disease, even before any significant blockage has developed and potentially years
before a standard health screening or exercise ECG would detect disease.
CT Calcium Scoring can detect the presence of coronary artery disease even when
the coronary arteries are less than 50% narrowed. This makes CT Heartscan™ a vital
tool in the fight against Heart Disease, as half of all heart attacks occur with less than
50% narrowing of the Coronary Arteries.
Health Screening
We service our cars and our household appliances but often pay little attention to our
most valuable possession….our own bodies. A full health screening will give you peace
of mind – early detection of something that isn’t right means that you can take action.
Mole Screening
Electronic mole mapping is a new dimension in the early and accurate detection of
skin abnormalities. Bodyscan Pro automatically checks whether, and where, new
moles have developed and compares clinical photos of the last examination with
the new ones – particularly helpful if you have multiple moles or a history of skin
abnormalities.

or British Association of Plastic Surgeons (BAPS). All our Surgeons: Mr G Alvarez- Parra,

Ramsay Weight Loss Service
At Ramsay Weight Loss Service, we understand how important the decision making
is when patients are considering weight loss surgery.
We are committed to helping patients on every step of their weight loss surgery
journey with information, care and that special attention that makes all the difference.
Some of our team members have lived the weight loss surgery journey themselves,
so we know a little more about the reality of life after surgery.
Aftercare is crucial to their success and that’s why Ramsay Weight Loss Service
stand out in what can be a confused marketplace. We work hard to provide a ‘gold
standard’ patient focused service by giving patients the care, knowledge and skills
to work with the surgical procedure they choose to have.
Benefits of weight loss
There is increasing evidence that losing excess weight can offer long-term health
benefits to seriously overweight people. These include:
•
many overweight patients with diabetes find this improves after surgery
and weight loss.
•
improvements in conditions such as high blood pressure and sleep problems.
•
the majority of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease who lost weight
after surgery saw an improvement in their condition - or in some cases the
condition disappeared.
•
a reduction in chances of dying in the next 10 years from causes such as cancer,
heart disease and diabetes.
What sort of weight loss procedures are available?
•
Gastric band
•
Gastric bypass
•

•
