SummerFest: first, get your foursome ready (alumni and friends are welcome) for the 13th Annual Alumni Golf Tournament; then, register to join us at the Alumni Banquet – “Games We Play”! *Special pricing for retired Ankeny teachers/staff: $15. As always, the Alumni Association invites all alumni, friends, and family to attend. In addition, retired Ankeny Schools teachers/staff members are encouraged to attend the banquet. Special banquet pricing for retired teacher/staff is set at $15/person. If you or your class is interested in sponsoring a teacher, you may send payment with your banquet registration and either contact the person(s) yourself to ask them to attend, or you may let us know – tell us whether or not you’ve been in contact with the retired teacher/staff member. The pins were flying at Merle Hay Lanes on April 1, 2016 at the first Ankeny Alumni Association Bowling Outing. Thanks to everyone who came out! Join us next year for another rolling good time. This Month’s Q&A Technology Tips 2 7 13th Annual Alumni Association Golf Tournament: Registration and Participation Join us for our 13th Annual Golf Tournament at Woodland Hills Golf Course! Shotgun start begins at 8:30 a.m.; check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. The format is a four-person best shot. Team and individual entries are welcome. Single person entries will be assigned to a team. The cost is $70 per person for registrations postmarked by July 1st ($80 per person after July 1st), which includes 18 holes of golf, cart, prizes, and a lunch following the outing. All golfers will receive a gift bag as an entry prize, with Ankeny items included! In addition, a $10,000 Hole-In-One Prize will be sponsored by Brian Donaghy ('80) and Joel Donaghy ('86) and Donaghy-Kempton Insurors. Entry deadline is July 1st. Please include payment with your entry form. Checks should be made payable to: Ankeny Alumni Association, Inc. and should include Alumni Golf on the memo line. You may use the form found in this newsletter or on our website (www.ankenyalumni.org). If you include your golf registration with your banquet registration, you may write just one check. Plaques featuring recipients’ biographies and photos are on display in Ankeny High School. 2015 Scholarship Winners Ankeny Alumni Legacy Scholarship Recipients ($700 award): Anna Silliman Kelsey Yarrow AHS Alumni Scholarship Recipients ($500 award): Steve Erredge David Bis Megan Marshall Claire Hill Lein Family Scholarship Recipients ($500 award, renewable for up to $2000): Connor Gray was presented the fourth installment. Hannah Johnson was presented the thirds installment. Sterling Hulling was presented the second installment. Anna Silliman become the ninth and final recipient of the Lein Family Scholarship and was presented the first installment. The Lein Family Scholarship is funded by the Lein Family and facilitated by the Alumni Association. The Ralph A. Way Scholarship The Ankeny Alumni Association appreciates the generosity of Sharol C. Way, daughter of alum Ralph A. Way ('33), in establishing a scholarship fund in memory of her father. Ralph Way valued the time he spent playing sports in Ankeny. For several years, Sharol Way has funded a scholarship to honor graduating high school student-athletes. Coaches are asked to select the recipients, which makes the scholarship a wonderful honor for several reasons! Riley Newberg (a $500 award) Many thanks to Sharol Way!! Class of 1966: It’s our 50th reunion! July 8th we will attend the Alumni Banquet as an honored class. July 9th there will be activities during the day, and our banquet will be held at the Red Shed that night. July 10th morning send off. Class of 1971: July 8: Alumni Golf Tournament at Woodland Hills Golf Course. Classes will be paired together; register at: http://www.ankenyalumni.org/Golf Class of 1981: The class of 1981 is just going to have a gathering at one of the beer garden tents on Friday, July 8th. The tent will be marked with our Class of ’81 sign. Class of 1986: The Class of 1986 is getting set for their 30th reunion! On Friday, July 8th, the class will participate in the Alumni Golf Tourney – please register via the alumni association website at www.ankenyalumni.org/Golf . Then on Saturday, July 9th, we’ll meet at Benchwarmers in Ankeny starting at 6PM. “Like” the Ankeny Class of 86 page on Facebook, get more information there or at the event page, and register/purchase tickets at 86ankenyhawks.myevent.com !! July 9: The reunion will be held at the Courtyard Marriott and will begin with an 'encore' presentation of the wonderful PowerPoint presentation that Rob Basham created for our 40th. An open bar and hors d'oeuvres available while we enjoy a night of reminiscing. No Class of 1991 reservations/pre-payment necessary. Class of 1976: JULY 8 informal gathering at SummerFest Leisure Garden (beer tent) around 7 p.m. Located west of thecarnival area rides. We will have a ‘76 sign on a tent located near the N.W. area of the Leisure Garden. JULY 9 the class will be at the FOUNDERS IRISH PUB 110 1st St. BONDURANT IA. 50053. Casual attire. We will start at 6 p.m. with Dinner around 7 p.m. Reunion ends at 2 a.m. FOOD: Choice of Lasagna dinner or Chicken dinner. BEVERAGES: Lemonade, coffee and water are included with your dinner. Cash bar. Designated drivers will be available. Willis Stittsworth: 2015 Hall of Honor Inductee The 2015 Hall of Honor recipient is Willis Stittsworth, Class of 1948. Willis Stittsworth graduated from Ankeny High School in 1948. Following high school, Willis received his bachelor’s degree from Bemidji State University, Bemidji (BSU), Minnesota, in Health and Physical Education. Willis then received his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of North Dakota. He pursued post-graduate studies at Northern Colorado College, North Dakota University, Moorhead Minnesota State University and Bemidji State University. After college graduation, Willis taught and coached at various Minnesota schools and elementary physical education in Fargo, North Dakota. He later joined the teaching staff at Bemidji State University, where he finished his career as Professor Emeritus of Elementary Education in 1989. During his career he mentored many students who later became teachers themselves. Willis was very active in civic organizations serving on the boards of directors, as chairman or president of the Minnesota Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance Association (MAHPERD); Minnesota Developmental Adaptive Physical Education Association; Confidence Learning Center for the Developmental Challenged; Director of seven Physical Education for Youth National Conferences; Fargo-Moorhead Physical Education Association; Board of Directors of the BSU Foundation; BSU Alumni Association and the Lions Club. Stittsworth has also received the MAHPERD’s Distinguished Service Award and the Presidential Award; Phi Epsilon Kappa Honorary Fraternity Award; Lou Keller Ward for Outstanding Service Contribution to the Profession (MAHPERD); and is a member of the BSU Golden Beaver Society. Willis is an active member of the Homecoming and Special Events Committee of the BSU Alumni Association. He is an active member of the First Lutheran Church; Life Member of the Elks Lodge and the Fraternal Order of Eagles; Member of the Sons of Norway and a veteran of the US Army and member of the American Legion.
