ubünden!
In 1864, St. Moritz Hotel pioneer, Johannes Badrutt used a wager
to convince some of his summer guests to return to Graubünden for the winter. The ploy was successful and from this
point on the guests kept returning year after year, and thus
winter tourism was born.
More than 140 years later it became Switzerland’s No. 1 holiday
region, with resorts such as Davos Klosters, Laax, Arosa, and
Engadin Scuol Samnaun, some of the top winter sports regions
worldwide. The 2,200km of ski slopes, 1,800km of cross country
skiing runs and a superb network of winter hiking paths are
only part of what Graubünden has to offer. The lightening quick
bob runs and snowshoe tours all add to the fun in Graubünden.

However there is also plenty of time to relax in rustic mountain
lodges enjoying a warm and delicious local speciality or unwind in one of the many spas throughout the region.
Allegra and Welcome to Graubünden!

(Super-Combined) and Olympic Gold Medallist
in the Giant Slalom
“As I travel around the world I get to see many wonderful
ski resorts. But when I have the time there is nothing I love
more than skiing in Graubünden in my home region, Obersaxen
Mundaun. For the perfect sporting diet nothing beats my
mother’s cooking which you can find right next to the piste
in our restaurant ‘zum Stai’ — what could be better!”

“For me it is always a great feeling when visitors
from all over the world come into my mountain
hut, sit down at the long table and enjoy
the atmosphere, the food, and above all the
camaraderie — experience a little bit of our
‘Bündner’ hospitality. Bun appetit!”

“Laax provides all the technical know-how for
snow conditions and everything I could possibly
want. My home park, Crap Song Gion is open
even at the end of November. Then at the beginning of January the Burton European Open takes
place, the biggest freestyle event in Europe. Apart
from the ski slopes I can also warmly recommend
the exhibition hall — Das Gelbe Haus!“

“Graubünden is a top place for cross country
skiers. Wherever you go you find perfectly
prepared runs in idyllic settings. My personal
favourites — the Davos region, my home
Val Müstair and of course the Dario Cologna
run in Ftan.“

Every freerider or skitourer dreams of “first tracks” in the snow,
but firstly you have to learn how to have fun off-piste. The
Alpine Safety Centre on the Diavolezza or the Avalanche Training
Centre in Davos are among the places to go for this. And in
any case, the less experienced beginners and those who are
unfamiliar with the terrain can take advantage of the services
offered by licensed mountain guides.

The skateline running from Alvaneu to Surava in Albulatal
is the very first and only ice path in Switzerland! In Surava
the winter is so cold that the whole village turns almost
into an enchanted ice-landscape where the sun rises only
just above the mountains.
The Albula and Bernina tracks between Thusis in Graubünden and Tirano in Italy are outstanding examples
of engineering innovation linking the high Alpine landscape
with the outside world. As the highest rail transit over the
Alps, the Albula / Bernina is the most spectacular railway
line in the world. In 2008, the rail tracks and surrounding
area were recognized by UNESCO’s world heritage.
The skate path in Surava is three kilometres of sheer fun
for everyone!
Top Accommodation: www.graubunden.com/accommodation
60,000 natural stone tiles hewn out of the Valser quartz
were incorporated in the build of the outstanding complex
of the spa at Therme Vals. Today, Peter Zumthor’s masterpiece of architecture has become a major public attraction.
So much so, that it is the only building in Switzerland to have
been granted a federal “listed” status within two years of
its completion. As a genuine spa it draws its water from
completely natural thermal springs. For the visitor there are
numerous indoor baths all at different temperatures and a
large outdoor bath with tremendous views of the mountains.

Enjoy your winter holiday in hotels which have your
children in mind. These specially designed hotels
take everything into account from child-minding,
wellness for children through to adventure trips throughout Graubünden. This children’s paradise allows grownups to enjoy a relaxing holiday as well.
For pure pleasure and fun, sledge through the deep snow
of this winter landscape made for tobogganing. With more
than 60 runs in Graubünden there are plenty of opportunities. The longest flood lit run in Europe from Preda
to Bergün is an absolute gem. This superb run passes alongside the UNESCO’s world heritage site — the Rhaetian
Railway track. A further treasure is the 12-kilometre run
on the Fideriser Heubergen in Prättigau where families
and tobogganing fans can really let their sledges go!
You open the door, the floor boards creak gently under
your feet, the red and white checked cloth sits invitingly
on the table, and you know you have arrived in the
right place — one of Graubünden’s many mountain huts.
Transport yourself back in time 100 years to the alpine
world of Fops Alp in Lenzerheide or the Bodähütte in
Prättigau, which is best reached in winter with snowshoes.
Try the regional speciality “Capuns” or relax and bask
under azure skies on one of the hut’s many sun terraces.

Alongside Graubünden’s traditional
ideas there are many special and
unique adventures to discover.

What better way to enjoy mountain grandeur than to
wander along well maintained winter hiking trails!
The sheer range and diversity of these paths through snow
laden forests or over historic mountain passes is staggering.
Just in Arosa alone there are 60 kilometres of winter
hiking routes, where you can walk from one mountain
lodge to the next and sample the local hospitality.
Chalet charm
© Arosa Bergbahnen AG
In the highest region in the Alps this popular endurance sport
finds an ideal setting in valleys which seem to go on forever.
Graubünden provides excellently prepared runs both for
classic, as well as the skating cross country disciplines. The
Engadin ski marathon is the second biggest cross country
ski event in the world and attracts over 10,000 competitors
every year. Whether it is the ski marathon, the free access
to Davos’ cross country tracks or the awarding winning run
in Splügen, Graubünden has something for everyone.
Tobogganing
As Europe’s first indoor freestyle hall, Laax offers jumps
and tricks the whole year round. The enormous 1,200 m2
arena for snowboarders and freestyle skiers with specially
trained staff , demonstrates how advanced freestyle winter
sport in Laax is. The choice of activity for the beginner
and the proficient rider ranges from outdoor winter training,
mountain biking training through to skateboarding, big
air and intensive trampoline courses. The freestyle academy
provides fun-orientated activity the whole year regardless
of the weather.
Winter in Graubünden can also bring about a change
of pace. Slowing down can be so vital. Arosa even has
a mountain just for this — the Brüggerhorn. The nostalgic
two-seater lift transports you gracefully to the slopes.
Then you cruise back down on the Chillout piste.
Not to be missed is the Relax Lounge — a special zone
at 2,000 metres. Here you can sit back, unwind and
enjoy a long drink. There are many “chillout” riding slopes
and along with the “Slow Mountain” on the Schatzalp
in Davos relaxation is guaranteed.
Families
High, higher and plenty of snow. When it comes to
snow, Graubünden, as the leading winter sports region
in Switzerland, knows all about it. The above average
altitude of the ski resorts and villages ensures snow
in abundance. Proof required? Arosa, the classic holiday
destination is situated at 1,800 metres above sea level,
in Laax three quarters of the ski resort is above the
forest line and Davos is Europe’s highest winter city.
© Savognin Tourismus im Surses
For skiers and snowboarders, Switzerland’s No.1 holiday
destination provides over 40 ski regions with perfectly
prepared slopes at altitudes were snow is guaranteed.
Families, pleasure seekers or ardent winter sports fans will
all find the ski region they are looking for. And to round
off a wonderful day out on the snow, there are numerous
ski huts and lodges waiting just off-piste.
However, Graubünden has much
more to offer. Here are just some
of the great winter adventures
to be discovered.
Winter Hiking

In the middle of Graubünden’s majestic mountains and gentle valleys
lies 2,200 kilometres of ski slopes,
1,800 kilometres of cross-country ski

hiking trails. That alone is a perfect
reason to holiday in this winter
wonderland.

“Families are welcome”. This applies to the whole of
the canton, but especially the holiday destinations,
where the facilities are particularly focussed on children
and families. Such places are instantly recognizable
with the special designation “Families are welcome”.
The special child-friendly ski slopes, ski schools and
child care arrangements are thoughtfully designed
with families in mind. Children’s ski parks and fun
slopes provide both an enjoyable and relaxing winter
holiday for children, parents and grandparents alike.
Wellness and Spa Hotels
In the Tschuggen Grand Hotel in Arosa, guests are treated
to a 5,000-square metre wellness oasis which is an architectural marvel. Another option is to relax in the biggest
Hamam hotel in the Alps, Hotel Schweizerhof in Lenzerheide.
Lifestyle Hotels
© Daniel Hager Photography
It’s all about ambience high in the mountains in the lifestyle hotels of Graubünden. Ecology is a major element,
and all building materials are sourced directly from
the alpine landscape and then creatively incorporated
to be aesthetically pleasing. Enjoy your stay in a historic
hotel filled with rustic charm or conversely a designer
hotel placed right next to the piste. The choices are endless.

Wellness in Graubünden means relaxation and pleasure
all at once. Architects and planners have responded
in many places with buildings that enhance the sense
of well-being. The design concept of many hotels and
their wellness facilities is remarkable indeed.
