trans human rights advocate for nearly two decades. She’s the founding editor of

Ebony.com, The Huffington Post, Black Girl Dangerous and the Advocate. She
works to foster understanding and acceptance of trans people inside and outside
communities of color. She was recently honored in 2015 with the Virginia Prince

gender equality by upholding the ethics and values of the profession. One method of developing inclusiveness in
the classroom is through collaboration with Safe Space trainers to help reduce student discomfort. This presentation
will highlight the importance of creating safe classroom environments for students of diverse sexual orientations and
gender identities through education on what it means to be an ally in professional practice.

Trans-Cendence International, Inc. is growing in its network of local trans and SOFFA (Significant Other, Family,
Friends, Allies) support group chapters. We are dedicated to the well-being of everyone involved in the lives of trans
people in order to assist stronger and healthier individuals, partnerships, families, and communities. In this presentation,
attendees will learn about the impetus for founding a support group under this model as well as a brief history of
Trans-Cendence International, Inc. Come hear from transgender individuals and their SOFFAs about how this holistic
approach to support has benefited their relationships personally, professionally, and in their communities.

session that reviews the importance of engaging conservatives in policy change and best practices to do so. The lecture
will review conservative contributions to the GLBT equality movement, analyze the core of opposition that still
remains, and discuss how best to change that opposition to support.

Transgender/Gender Non-Conforming Sexual Assault

For transgender/gender non-conforming individuals some reports estimating rates of sexual assault up to 66 percent.
Therefore, many survivors, who may also be students at our institutions, are living with the aftermath of trauma and
fear of repeat victimization. This workshop will strive to share what the barriers and realities of care are and provide
some practice in working from a client-centered best practice model.

Recent laws and court rulings have resulted in much more heated debate. And debating theology often hurts hearts

Phyllis Randolph Frye is an Eagle Scout, a former member of the Texas A&M Corps of
Cadets, a US Army veteran (1LT-RA 1970-72), a licensed engineer, a licensed attorney, a
father, a grandmother and a lesbian wife. She is the first, out, transgender judge in the nation.
Now having lived almost sixty percent of her life as the woman she always felt herself to be,
Phyllis remains on the cutting edge of LGBTI and especially transgender legal and political
issues. When the “gay” community was still ignoring or marginalizing the transgender
community in the early 1990’s, Phyllis began the national transgender legal and political
movement (thus she is known as being the TG movement’s “Grandmother”) with the six
annual transgender law conferences (ICTLEP) and their grassroots training.
Attorney Frye is one of the Task Force’s 1995 “Creator of Change” award winners. In 1999 she was given the
International Foundation for Gender Education’s “Virginia Prince Lifetime Achievement” award. In 2001 she was
given the National LGBT Bar Association’s (a.k.a. Lavender Law’s) highest honor, the “Dan Bradley Award.” She was
honored beginning in 2009 by Texas A&M University with an annual “Advocacy Award” given in her name. In 2013
the Houston Transgender Unity Committee gave her its “Lifetime Achievement Award.” In 2015 she was given the
National Center for Transgender Equality’s “Julie Johnson Founders Award.” That same year, Phyllis was featured
on the front page (above the fold) of the Sunday Edition, August 30, New York Times, and she also became a Life
Member of the National Eagle Scout Association.
In 2010 Phyllis was sworn-in as the first, out, transgender judge in the nation, as a City of Houston Associate Municipal
Judge. She retains her senior partnership with Frye, Oaks and Benavidez, PLLC, (at www.liberatinglaw.com) which is an
out LGBTI-and-straight-allies law firm. While the members of the firm practice law in a variety of areas, Phyllis devotes
her practice exclusively to taking transgender clients — both adults and minors — through the Texas courts to change
the clients’ names and genders on their legal documents.

The Hollyfield Foundation awards grants to nonprofit 501(c) (3) organizations that support its mission.
Jay Hollyfield was a native Houstonian who attended Lamar High School and later The University of
Texas. An avid traveler, Jay spent his early years dabbling in acting, first in New York, then in Europe.
Like his father, Jay became an entrepreneur and successful businessman. In the years to follow, Jay
owned and operated many businesses that catered to the Houston gay community. His properties
included both historical landmarks and popular gay destinations in Montrose and Midtown. His pride
and joy is the Hollyfield Building, which is now Uptown Lofts and before Hollyfield’s purchase, the
Depelchin Children’s Home.
A well-known, colorful Montrose resident known for his adventures and well-resourced life style, Jay
lived life grand. Jay was a patron of the fine arts, his true love. He was involved with the Westheimer
Art Festival from its inception in 1972 until his death in 1994. He installed a board that would keep true
to his vision, an arts festival for the community. Today the Bayou City Art Festival is bigger and more
successful than ever, raising hundreds of thousands for the art community.
Jay was a champion of gay and lesbian causes. Politically he wanted to further the cause by uniting the
community. Securing equal rights for gays and lesbians became his passion. He was also interested in the
health issues that faced the gay and lesbian community, especially HIV/AIDS. He was instrumental in
founding the Kaposi Sarcoma Committee, which today is AIDS Foundation Houston, and was an early
supporter of the Montrose Clinic.
In 1988, at the request of the Human Rights Campaign Fund, Jay and a few of his friends hosted a
dinner in the wine cellar at Tony’s as a fund raiser. It is now known as the Houston Black Tie Dinner,
a charitable foundation that raises funds for local and national organizations committed to enriching
the GLBT community. Named after Jay for his hard work and dedication to the GLBT community,
the Hollyfield Political Award, is presented at the Houston Black Tie Dinner honoring its recipient for
political activism within the community.
Jay Hollyfield died of AIDS-related conditions in 1994. At his request, the Hollyfield Foundation was
founded. Its purpose is to help secure equal rights and treatment for sexual minorities and to be an
