WINGS FOR LIFE CHARITY AUCTION @ EBAY List of Articles Article1: A replica of David Coulthard’s Original Formula 1 Race Car from the GP of England 2007 Details: A piece of racing history created for the activity of “Faces for Charity”: A replica of David Coulthard’s Formula 1 race car from Silverstone (GP Britain 2007). Both Red Bull Racing cars (Mark Webber and David Coulthard) were involved in this initiative. The design of one car features about 21.000 small pictures that people were able to upload for £ 10. A total of one million dollars was collected through this charity activity donated to Wings for Life. The buyer can choose the design of the replica racing car – delivered without engine: Red Bull Racing or Faces for Charity About the athlete: In terms of race wins, ‘DC’ is the second most successful driver on the grid this year (2008) and the second most experienced in terms of race starts. This is David’s 15th Formula One season and it’s a sign of his worth that Red Bull Racing is only his third home in all that time. He spent his first two years with Williams, following that with a loyal nine years’ service for McLaren. In terms of points scored, he is the leading British driver in the history of the sport. The past 14 years have also produced some big numbers: 228 race starts, making him the fourth most experienced racer of all time, and 527 points scored, a total beaten only by Schumacher, Prost and Senna. His 13 wins to date put Coulthard 18th in the all-time winners list. Oh, and he has also produced one autobiography (It Is What It Is, available from all good bookshops) which shows remarkable restraint compared with other athletes who write their life story just a year or so after leaving school. The 2008 season is Coulthard’s fourth with Red Bull Racing and, having been here since Day One, David is now very much part of its fabric, with a contribution that goes beyond mere cockpit time. All Coulthard’s F1 wins have come in cars designed by Adrian Newey and getting to drive another Newey-penned car in 2007 was something David had looked forward to for some time. Towards the end of the year, there were signs that improved reliability would allow the car’s performance potential to shine through in 2008. Coulthard has won the ‘classic’ Grands Prix in Monaco, Britain, Belgium and Italy, but he singles out his French GP victory in 2000 as his most satisfying, as it was a really hard-fought win from third on the grid. Words such as ‘veteran’ and ‘elder statesman’ are the lazy shorthand used to describe David. However, listen to the air turn blue on the car-to-pit radio or watch the mechanics run for cover as he comes back to the pits when things don’t go to plan and it’s clear that the fire still burns brightly. Article 2: KTM Dakar Winner Bike 2007 & Pilot’s equipment Details: Since 2001 it has always been a KTM bike to win the world’s most notorious rally. The Austrian factory has dominated the desert race since then. If rally is the essence of adventure and endurance for both man and machine, the Dakar is the one that sorts the men from the boys. The classic event began in Lisbon, Portugal on January 6 and finished 15 days later in Dakar. It was Frenchman Cyril Despres who decided the rally in his favour, the second time after 2005 and after a hard but fair fight with colleague Marc Coma (ESP). About the athlete: Growing up in a family working in the restaurant business, it was 13 years old Cyril to catch the train to Paris and buy his first motorbike. Until the age of 22 he competed in trials, while following the Rally Dakar closely on TV. He finished his first Dakar on 16th position in 2000, won his first stage in 2001, followed by a second place and the rally world championship in 2003, and another podium (3rd) in 2004. He won the famous desert race in 2005 for the first time and after his victory in 2007 is still the current Dakar winner on a motorbike. Does Cyril Despres have any personal (friends, …) experiences with spinal cord injury? Cyril Despres: Sadly yes. Two good friends of mine, Esteve Isidre and Chris Blais suffered spinal cord injury last year. They are both fighters and have responded incredibly to their injuries and continue to lead busy and active lives. But that said I am sure they would like the chance to get out of their wheel chairs and walk again one day. Built in Kansas City in 1945, it shared the good fortune of the Corsair in never having to fly off to war. In 1994 it was discovered and purchased by Sigi Angerer, later to become the Flying Bulls’ chief pilot. There was lots of work to be done, since the Mitchell was not at all in good shape. First it got a complete overhaul in the US: it was restored and converted into a civilian version with a comfortable interior. By September 1997 the work had been completed to the point that the Mitchell was ready to undertake the flight to Europe across the North Atlantic. At the beginning of 2001, the aircraft was moved to Salzburg Airport. Hannes Arch is not only an athlete but also has started his own production and stunt coordination company, Airpro GmbH. Specializing in aerial film and TV production, the company quickly attracted a roster of high profile clients, including renowned fashion designer and filmmaker Willy Bogner. Hannes Arch also made his mark on the paragliding scene by organizing a gruelling international competition, known as the Red Bull X-Alps. The competition challenges the world’s most elite paragliding pilots to cross the Alps from Austria to Monaco entirely by air or foot in a race against the clock. The event quickly gained the reputation as one of the world’s toughest adventure races. Hannes Arch’s personal statement as Wings for Life ambassador: As an extreme athlete I recognize a lot of analogies between my work ethic and those of Wings for Life. But it could also happen to me that one day the bad luck catches up. Dreams are important to everybody and by the support of Wings for Life I would like to offer people with spinal cord injuries the chance to dream of a future without a wheelchair. In 1995, Coma became Spanish Junior Champion in the Over 175cc class on a 250cc KTM. The experience and maturity he has gathered helped him to face his main target with guarantees: the 2006 Dakar Rally, where arrived in top personal and physical shape. He won that race and since then he has recorded impressive results, although there was something missing on that list: the jewel of the crown, winning the Dakar, what he finally managed to do in 2004. Roma has taken a place in the heart of many fans. He took over from Jordi Arcarons and the Dakar wouldn’t be the same without him. With the passage of years, dash gives way to experience and after participating in seven editions of the Dakar in the motorbike class, Roma faced a new challenge taking part in the 2005 edition in the car class at the wheel of a Mitsubishi. Three pole positions, three podiums and a dominant pole to flag victory in the San Marino International Formula 3 race at Imola, displayed his true potential. Even so 2002 did not meet expectation as friction within the team was a new problem for Tonio to deal with. In 2003 Tonio contested the FIA F3000 International Championship with Coloni Motorsport, emerging as the top rookie. He took pole in Hungary after only nine laps on the circuit, with a margin of 0.471 over the second qualifier, but victory eluded him with a pit stop problem when a wheel nut jammed. He finished fourth in the championship. His 2003 performances earned him the lead drive with 2003 F3000 Champion team Arden International. The 2004 F3000 International Championship proved Tonio’s potential. Taking seven wins from a total of ten starts, including nine pole positions, Tonio stormed to the championship. The Italian holds the joint all-time record for F3000 wins along with Juan Pablo Montoya and Nick Heidfeld. A curious fact: Dani learned the circuits on which he races now by heart watching videotapes of 500cc races with Rainey or Lawson. However, his favourite rider has always been Mick Doohan. Unbeknownst to his disapproving parents, Naglich started ski racing at 16 in order to gain enough experience to forerun World Cup races in Kitzbühel. He went on to race the gruelling 24 Hours of Aspen five times, winning in 1993, 1996 and 1997. Naglich competed in the Red Bull Snowthrill in Chamonix, France, then the biggest freeski event in Europe, in 1998. The following year, he won the biggest air category, but was disqualified for losing a ski mid-flight and continuing on a single ski. The greatest success in his young career was his double-victory (single and team) during the Olympic Winter Games in Turin 2006.
