SAGE Message Line: 954.634.7219 — www.sagewebsite.org Notes from the SAGE Co-Ed Discussion Group (at the pride center) The LGBT friendly SAGE Co-Ed Discussion Group meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 1 pm at the Pride Center. The format for the group is one of questions/answers. The group facilitator asks a question and participants respond. When we are asked questions, we are often forced to consider situations in a different way or from the perspective of another person. I find it amazing to hear the good ideas presented by others—often very different from my own answer. Such an approach can expand one’s thinking and that is usually a good thing! Through conversation with other mature LGBT people we can get to know some really fascinating individuals. Consider joining us to hear what your peers have to say and they too can hear from you. Our meeting dates for July are July 3 and July 17. Mark your calendars and plan to be there. . --Frank This is a SAGE sponsored activity. Notes from the SAGE Camera Club Attention all camera buffs! Your SAGE CAMERA CLUB will hold its next monthly meeting on Saturday, June 28th, at the Pride Center, at 1:00PM in Room 204. We will be discussing ALL THINGS CAMERA, sharing some of our favorite pictures, watching tutorials, and just having FUN !! The July Photo Op for the Camera Club will be held on July 8th at the world-famous Elbo Room on Ft. Lauderdale Beach. We will meet at the Pride Center at 1:00 PM and carpool there. This should be an awesome opportunity to observe and capture the wild life of southeast Florida in its natural(?) habitat. The Camera Club Monthly Meeting for July will be held at the Pride Center at 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 26th. Bring your cameras and favorite pictures and any questions to our meeting. Notes from the Men’s Drop-In Can you believe we are in the middle of another summer in south Florida? Do I hate the humidity, the fact that our dear snowbird friends have left us here with little or no traffic on the roads, immediate seating at our favorite restaurants, quick check-out at the supermarket. However, at the SAGE Men’s Drop-In, while not always a full house, we have enjoyed respectable attendance among the regulars and a nice smattering of newcomers. Makes my heart sing. While Dr. Norm Peters is once again taking the summer off from his Drop-In moderator duties I have most weeks taken on the job as moderator at least for the first hour and I can say with all honesty find the job quite stimulating and challenging trying to match wits with some of the brightest, well-rounded and interesting guys. Keeps me on my toes. We usually discuss important events of the day along with updates on recent or planned vacations, movie reviews and a general sharing of events taking place in our lives. No topic is out-of-bounds. However, with such a diverse group of men the conversation is seldom boring and often very enlightening. So if you would like to beat the summer doldrums come and join us. We meet every Wednesday from 1-3pm at the comfortably airconditioned Pride Center. You will have the opportunity to learn of upcoming events, including our monthly luncheon held on the first Saturday of every month at the Herb Skolnick Center in Palm Aire. SAGE also sponsors a monthly movie at the Pride Center free and open to all members and non-members and our dear friend, John Chandler, coordinates a single men’s dinner. Each month the new and popular camera club under the leadership of John Harris and our very well-attended computer club under the direction of our very own president Ken Goodman meets. You will never have to utter the words “boring summer” if you participate in all of the SAGE-sponsored activities. Meet new people see old friends. The SAGE road is the road to fun activities with cordial welcoming people making you feel welcome. Come join us. This is a SAGE sponsored activity. --Ron SAGE on the Border/Alternatives (SOBA) Celebrates Five Years What a Swell Party it was! Five years and going strong! Jared did not disappoint. As promised, he gave us a Party! Food & drink, desserts - but best of all we had our camaraderie. And, we all came, despite the fact that it was pouring rain outside. We weren’t going to miss what has become for all of us our Monday morning ritual – our “Alternatives” meeting, as we affectionately call it, and as the Volen Center knows us by thanks to Jared Policano, Program director at the Volen Center in Boca Raton. We follow the guidelines laid out by Caroline Leto 5 years ago and they work. These guidelines have kept us (this little band of usually 18 women and men - equally divided) together over these meaningful years. We have laughed frequently and shared out feelings and thoughts that sometimes only our contemporaries would understand. We can always say what we want and we can sometimes even learn – how others are managing, what life was like for us individually way back when, what our hopes and plans are for the future. continued on page 5 SAGE Message Line: 954.634.7219 — www.sagewebsite.org 4 SAGE Social-Lites PAID ADVERTISING - PAID ADVERTISING - PAID ADVERTISING - John G. Harris Your SAGE Social Committee will kick off July with an extra-special Fourth of July patriotic Lunch & Learn at the Skolnick Center on July 5th, 2014. Enjoy your friends and family and loved ones on the 4th, and then continue the weekend with a HUGE GALA PARTY on the 5th. The Social Committee is going all out to make this a fabulous event, as there will be patriotic colors, flags, music, dinnerware, sing-alongs, trivia questions, and just fun stuff to celebrate the 238th Anniversary of OUR COUNTRY! Catering for the inside PICNIC will be our own Giacomo from Primavera Restaurant, who will lovingly prepare hot dogs, hamburgers, cole slaw, potato salad, soft drinks, and a mystery dessert just for US ! No ants, no heat, no rain, no mosquitoes GUARANTEED! Please join us on July 5th at the Skolnick at the regular time for a fun-filled Celebration! Also on the social agenda for July is Dinner at Christina Wan’s Asian Restaurant. The festivities will begin at 6:00PM on Thursday, July 17th. This is a great venue, serving delicious food, and a favorite with SAGE members. The Restaurant is located on the northeast corner of U.S. 1 (Federal Highway) and N.E. 6th Street, Ft. Lauderdale (in the Winn-Dixie Plaza). Please join us for these great events, both for the food and the great camaraderie. SEE YOU THERE !!! This is a SAGE sponsored event. continued from page 4 We thank Jared Policano for the idea of creating this group and printing an article about starting it in the Palm Beach Post 5 years ago, Bruce Todres and Larry McNear for bringing the article to the attention of Ann Smith and Caroline Leto and to SAGE for joining in this extraordinary adventure of having a Co-Ed Senior LGBT Discussion Group in a Straight Center. It has all worked out! Today, Caroline continues to be our female facilitator and Frank Piasecki has joined her as the male facilitator. Backups for them include Jean Arthurton and John Richardson. We look forward to the next five years. Galli The SAGE movie for July will be shown on July 21st at 4:15pm at the Pride Center In Room 204 on the second floor. The movie will be What’s Up Doc? a 1972 screwbal comedy film released by Warner Bros., directed by Peter Bogdanovich and starring Barbra Streisand, Ryan O’Neal, and Madeline Kahn in her first feature film role (for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe). It was intended to pay homage to comedy films of the 1930s, especially Bringing Up Baby, as well as old Bugs Bunny cartoons. The film was a success, and became the thirdhighest grossing film of 1972. The film won the Writers Guild of America 1973 Best Comedy Written Directly for the Screen award for writers Buck Henry, David Newman and Robert Benton. It was placed at number 61 on the list of 100 greatest comedies published by the American Film Institute. With Howard Hawks’s Bringing Up Baby (1938) as his blueprint, Peter Bogdanovich resurrected and paid homage to 1930s screwball comedy in What’s Up, Doc? (1972). When wacky co-ed Judy Maxwell (Barbra Streisand, in the Katharine Hepburn part) spies nebbishy musicologist Howard Bannister (Ryan O’Neal in bespectacled Cary Grant mode) in a San Francisco hotel lobby, she decides that Howard and his precious igneous rocks are right up her alley. Too bad Howard already has a fiancée, the propriety-fixated Eunice (Madeline Kahn in her film debut). Using all her arcane knowledge from brief stays at numerous colleges, Judy tries to charm her way to a $20,000 grant for Howard, and Howard himself, at a banquet with grantor Frederick Larrabee (Austin Pendleton). Things get even more complicated the next day when Judy’s underwearfilled overnight bag gets mixed up with Howard’s rock bag, which gets mixed up with Mrs. Van Hoskins’ bag of jewels, which gets mixed up with Mr. Smith’s bag of top secret government papers. All sides converge at Larrabee’s mod townhouse and the chase PAID ADVERTISING - PAID ADVERTISING - PAID ADVERTISING - begins. Retaining Hawks’ machine-gun pace (as well as the sly pop culture referentiality of Billy Wilder), Bogdanovich and writers Buck Henry, David Newman, and Robert Benton updated the opposites-attract screwball convention for contemporary times. O’Neal gently parodied not only Grant but also his own Love Story (1970) preppy, while Kahn represents stiff-wigged 1950s manners as opposed to Streisand’s longhaired, pants-wearing free spirit. The happy ending, in which Cole Porter-belting youth wins out over old manners, found favor with audiences, as What’s Up, Doc? became one of the most popular films of 1972, and the second hit in a row for Bogdanovich after 1971’s The Last Picture Show. As usual we will be going to dinner following the movie. We’ll announce the choice at the close of the movie and ask for a show of hands of those who would like to join the group. Please help us by stacking your chairs against the walls. THANK YOU. See you at the movie! (Note: The new time - 4:15PM.) This is a SAGE sponsored activity.
