E T E H T www.1000islandsprivateers.net city, it’s been “full speed ahead” for the Privateers franchise, particularly in its marketing approach. “It’s really the grass roots kind of marketing that we focus on,” she said. “We do the usual promotions on TV and radio, we really feel that by building the personal relationships between the fans and the players, that’s what is going to guide us to long-term success.” With the move, the Privateers will have more population to draw from in city, which has a variety of restaurants and pubs. “In a way our marketing efort has become more focused,” Kirnan said. “Before we were more of a destination, we had to try and atract people from Watertown to come 30 miles to a game or get people from Fort Drum to come 18 miles to a game. Now we’re right on a busy street, we hope that just more the convenience factor makes our product more easily accessible. People can go to dinner and then the game’s right there.” The Privateers went 32-17 last season, inishing in second place, advancing to the semiinals against the Danbury Whalers. Yet part of the campaign was marred by several on-ice incidents with their rivals, the Akwesasne Warriors, including a bench-clearing brawl, in Game 3 of a irst-round playof series. State troopers needed to be called in to break up the melee, with 6 minutes, 5 seconds remaining in the inal game, won 6-2 by AMANDA MORRISON | WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES Wolfgang Dwyer of Davis Mechanical Service Inc., East Syracuse, installs saftey netting at the Watertown Municipal Arena earlier this month. The Privateers begin play at the arena today. the Privateers. Earlier in the season, 14 Thousand Islands players boycoted their game on Feb. 10 in protest that the league had not disciplined the Akwesasne team enough following a spearing incident against a Cape Cod Fins player on Jan. 14. Those Privateers and coach Marc LeFebvre quit or were ired and the league still took no action, forcing Kirnan to sign new players to complement the ive remaining on the roster. While the Akwesasne team wasn’t voted out of the league, it chose not to return to the FHL because of inancial issues, according to league commissioner Don Kirnan. The Privateers also faced challenges of the ice last season, as Nicole Kirnan had to lease and then run the Bonnie Castle Arena and restaurant just so her team could stay aloat and play out the season. “That was sure some season, but we survived it,” she said. Two of the issues on the table before Thousand Islands’ contract agreement with the city was inalized was ice time and locker room availability at the arena. With the deal, team will have the use of a locker room, but players must remove their equipment to let high school teams use the facilities; and additional locker rooms will be provided to opposing teams and oicials. “We understand that the irst year is not going to be ideal for everybody,” she said. “We’re just very happy that we’ve goten to a place where it will work well enough for everybody. Hopefully we all have a great year together in this facility and the community really supports the team and we’re able to give back to the community.” The Privateers will release their schedule in the coming weeks and begin its “international” search for a head coach and players to complement their 2012-13 roster, which may include returning players who re-sign with the club. “We will have a lot of exciting announcements over the next week or two,” said Kirnan, who expects ticket prices at the Fairgrounds arena to be “comparable” to those in Alexandria Bay. “Now we’re now moving full speed ahead toward the season with marketing and selling corporate partnerships and season tickets and all the things we need to do. It is exciting and we’re very happy to be here.” MJL CRUSHING LLC. Ater all, the former St. Lawrence University hockey standout has been involved in the game for most of her life.Kirnan, who competed on the U.S. Junior National team in 1996, served as an assistant captain with the Saints in her senior season (2000-01) as she helped lead the team to the irst women’s NCAA Championship game in the sport. She went on to become head coach at Manhatanville College for ive seasons, developing the program as a national power and later represented the ECAC on the NCAA Championships commitee. “I’ve been in hockey all my life and my family is in the hockey business,” said Kirnan said, who also owns a hockey camp, clinic and private skating business. “So its only natural that I’m in the business as well, it means a lot to me.” Now as owner of the Thousand Islands Privateers of the Federal Hockey League, Kirnan is looking forward to the franchise’s move to Watertown from Alexandria Bay as her irst priority was to keep the team in the region. Coming of both a challenging and somewhat controversial season in the Federal Hockey League, the Privateers hope to sail into calmer waters as they will call the municipal arena at the Alex T. Dufy Fairgrounds home beginning this upcoming season. A charter league member, the Thousand Island Privateers played the past two seasons at the Bonnie Castle Recreation Center in Alexandria Bay. “We knew we had to move, it was just a mater of where,” Kirnan said. “So that led us to a search of the whole Northeast, with obviously our preference being to stay in the north country where our fans are, because it takes a lot of time and a lot of resources to build a fan base and a following and to create a niche in the community.” But now with the franchise, which will retain its team name with its redand black-color scheme, making the move 30 miles south to Watertown, Kirnan hopes this will lead to a growing fan base — while still drawing its followers from the Alexandria Bay and its surrounding communities. “Before people from Watertown had to drive up there to see us play and it was a litle (farther) for people from Fort Drum as well,” she said. “So we’re hoping that our loyal fans from the river communities on both the Canadian side and the American side will continue to watch us, but also we’ll be able to build more of a fan base since it will be more convenient for people from the city of Watertown and Fort Drum to atend or games.” With a change in the schedule the Privateers will play 60 games, eight more than last season, including four more home games (30). Kirnan received oicial approval from the Watertown City Council on June 11 for a six-month franchise agreement, allowing the Privateers to move to the Fairgrounds’ arena. The facility’s seating capacity is far less than the arena in Alexandria Bay, “around 1,400 compared to 2,500 to 3,000” but should provide a more “intimate” seting to watch a hockey game. “I think it’s a great arena, a totally diferent feel from the Bonnie Castle,” she said. “It’s got strong roots in the community has far as history with a lot The Church Street D I N E R AMANDA MORRISON | WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES Privateers owner Nicole Kirnan’s team will play its home games this season at the Watertown Municipal Arena. Paul Kelly, who concluded his playing career as a player-coach with the Privateers last season, is now the club’s new head coach, the team announced in July during a press conference that Watertown Mayor Jefrey Graham and FHL commissioner Don Kirnan also atended. ”I’m really truly honored to embark on this new journey,” Kelly said. “Obviously it’s my irst jump into the coaching world. I’ve been around, I’ve played for seven years and I know the strain that coaches take on — I’ve seen some go gray prety quick — but I’m really excited about it.” Kelly, who also served as team captain last season, led Thousand Islands through a trying season and to the second round of the Federal Hockey League playofs. “I’ve always wanted to be a coach and stay in hockey,” said Kelly, a 31-year-old native of West Peabody, Mass. “Once this opportunity was presented to me, I couldn’t turn it down.” Kirnan said there was “a ton of interest in the job from around the world.” “But it’s important to get the right person who knows this team and is familiar with the community. I think it’s a natural step because he did so well last year in a coaching and playing role, which is tough to do.” Kelly’s promotion is at the heart of the franchise’s strategy for this season’s campaign as the team also announced the re-signing of four Privateers, including forward Adam McAllister and goalie Mat Anthony as well as forward Chase Tippin and defenseman Nick Williams. For Kelly, the choice to join the pro coaching ranks was a simple one, since he wanted to remain in the game of hockey at some level. “It was intriguing,” Kelly said of the job opening. “It’s tough for a guy to hang up his skates, I know when we get to the irst game, I’m going to want to be out there. I just felt this was a good time View our entire inventory at www.Phinneys.com JUSTIN SORENSEN | WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES New Watertown Privateers coach Paul Kelly speaks at a press conference last summer at Savory Downtown. He is a former player. to take the next step in the game, because I always wanted to be around this game for the rest of my life and coaching is how I’m going to stay in it.” The Privateers, a charter member of the ‘A’ level FHL, will enter its third season, which is now under way. “I got to know Paul prety well last year,” Anthony said. “I know what he wants and expects from guys — he demands the best — so we should be a well-disciplined team in the execution of our systems and in people doing their jobs because he demands it.” Kelly was elevated to player-coach status ater last season’s coach, Marc LeFebvre, along with 14 players, for- feited their jobs when they refused to play a game in early February in protest of the league’s handling of a incident involving the team’s then chief rival, the Akwesasne Warriors. Kelly was one of only ive players — including McAllister, Anthony, Tippen and Brad Smulders — who didn’t join the boycot and remained with the Privateers, leading the team to a second-place inish and to the second round of the playofs. “It was way too stressful,” Kelly said of his time as a player-coach. “You’re in the locker room as a player and then you have to be a coach of the players you’re playing with. It’s good if you’re a player and an assistant coach, because you just have to talk to guys, but to set the rules and be a player as well is tough. Last year was a good experience and now I’m going to take that next step.” Now as head coach, Kelly believes this experience created a bond between those remaining Privateers players, in which he hopes will carry over into next season. “Obviously last year didn’t work out as well as we wanted it to,” Kelly said. “We didn’t make the inals, but we had a good regular season. We still have a lot of uninished business from last year. This year we want to bring not just one or two tough guys — we want team toughness all over the ice.” The team announced that season tickets are still on sale at $299 each (with a special discount voucher on team apparel) and can be purchased by calling 382-5656 or visiting www.1000islandsprivateers.net. “We have a really close-knit group of players coming back,” Kirnan said. “And that’s key because we’re going to ask a lot of them besides playing hockey, they’re going to be out there in the community helping out at various events.” COZY COUNTRY CORNER tes a m i Est red e e r F nsu I y l l Fu (315) (315) 688-2529 523-0 004 NOW AT 3 LOCATIONS! 7608 N. T he Thousand Islands Privateers 2012-13 Federal Hockey League schedule includes 30 home dates at the Watertown Municipal Arena at the Alex T. Dufy Fairgrounds. The Privateers, which relocated to the city in June ater playing its irst two seasons in Alexandria Bay, opens its campaign by hosting the Cape Cod Blueins at 7:35 p.m. tonight. “I’m very happy with the schedule,” Privateers owner Nicole Kirnan said. “I’m excited for opening weekend and bringing our brand of hockey to Watertown and the surrounding communities.” Thousand Islands will play host to another team that relocated during the ofseason — the Williamsport Outlaws — the most during the upcoming season at 20 times — including the Privateers’ second game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 27 in Watertown at 7:35 p.m. Williamsport, which was one of the cities the Privateers considered relocating to, is hoped to be Thousand Island’s new rival ater the controversial Akwesasne Warriors of Ontario didn’t return to the league, according to Kirnan. “We obviously play Williamsport quite a bit, which actually twice as much, and we’re looking forward to that,” Kirnan said. “They’re now our natural rival and they’re the defending league champion. They moved from New Jersey to Williamsport, which is probably a litle bit closer in travel distance. They were very talented last season, so we anticipate they’ll have a strong team again this year.” The Privateers will play Cape Cod, the Danbury Whalers, the Danville Dashers and the Dayton Devils each 10 times during the regular season, with SNOW TIRES JUSTIN SORENSEN | WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES ive home games and ive road games against each team. Some 19 games of the Privateers’ home slate will be played on Friday and Saturday nights, with 12 home games on Fridays; along with eight Thursday games, two Wednesday dates and one Monday game completing the balance of their league schedule. All but one of the home dates include 7:35 p.m. faceof times. Thousand Islands will host one four-game homestand — including three consecutive games against Williamsport Friday, Feb. 1, Saturday, Feb. 2 and Thursday, Feb. 7 — and a trio of three-game homestands, including a holiday week set against Danville on Thursday, Dec. 27 and Friday, Dec. 28 and a game against Williamsport on Saturday, Dec. 29. “We’re home a couple times during the Christmas break so parents and their kids can check out our games,” Kirnan said. “and also the night before Thanksgiving when family and friends return CHIAPPONE’S TIRE A Better Place to Buy Tires BEST SNOW TIRE MONEY CAN BUY! It also will entertain Danbury on Valentine’s Day on Thursday, Feb. 14. The regular season winds down in March as the Privateers play three of its inal four games on home ice, including two against Williamsport; with the inale at Cape Cod on Saturday, March 9. The Outlaws — which won the league title as New Jersey and have since moved from Wayne, N.J. — will play all of its 30 home games outside at Bowman Stadium, home of baseball’s Williamsport Crosscuters of the Class A New York-Penn League. “It’s one of the oldest stadiums in the country,” Kirnan said. “They anticipate a good turnout there, they can seat more than 3,000 there — and some people will venture out to their games just for the experience of outdoor hockey.” The Privateers’ irst road trip consisting of ive games will be the season’s longest, which opens Thursday, Nov. 1 at Williamsport, includes two games against the Outlaws and a pair at the Danville Dashers in eastern Illinois. Its irst journey to play at Dayton, the league’s newest franchise, will be on Friday, Dec. 21 and Saturday Dec. 22 in southwestern Ohio. 7608 N.
