Dear Parishioners, Last week we celebrated the memorial of St. John Neumann, CSsR, the first male American saint and bishop to be canonized. He was also the first Redemptorist to take his vows in the United States. He was born in the Czech Republic in 1811 and studied to be a diocesan priest. After completing his seminary formation in 1835 he was not ordained because his bishop already had too many priests. (Would that bishops had that problem today!) He traveled to the mission lands of the United States and was ordained a priest for New York in 1836. He spent the next years as a parish priest in Buffalo, NY. Feeling a call to community life and prayer, he joined the Redemptorists and took his vows in January 1842. He worked with German immigrants and served as superior of the American Mission. He was appointed the 4th Bishop of Philadelphia and ordained bishop in 1852. This immigrant bishop had many struggles but continued to do the ordinary things in an extraordinary way. For eight years he worked tirelessly for his flock until his death on January 5th, 1860. He was buried in the Redemptorist church of St. Peter the Apostle in Philadelphia which is now the National Shrine of St. John Neumann. Next week we will celebrate the memorial of another Redemptorist, Blessed Peter Donders, CSsR. Blessed Peter was born in Tilburg, Holland, on October 27, 1809, and as a boy he felt called to the priesthood. His family was poor, and his schooling was cut short so that he could learn weaving, which was his father’s trade. At the age of 22, he entered St. Michael-Gestel Seminary. Ordained a priest on June 5, 1841, Father Donders set out for Paramaribo, Surinam, a Dutch colony. For 14 years he ministered to the city’s 2,000 Catholics, and regularly visited the plantation slaves, the military garrisons, and the indigenous people who lived along the rivers. In 1856, he volunteered to minister to people with leprosy at Batavia, where he remained for the next 28 years. In 1866, he joined the Redemptorists, professing his vows on June 24, 1867. These vows gave him a more vivid sense of the apostolic missionary community, and he left Batavia more often to minister to other pastoral needs. Peter Donders died among his lepers on January 14, 1887. He was mourned as their benefactor and invoked as a saint. Pope John Paul II beatified him on May 23, 1982. Blessed Peter Donders is buried in Batavia, Surinam. Both of these Redemptorists show us what it means to live out our baptismal calling. Not everyone is called to the consecrated life or to ordination, but all of us are called to be missionaries. Through baptism we have been given of the Holy Spirit to guide us and give us the grace so that we too might be instruments of God’s mercy and renewal in our world today. We lost just about everything including our home, but what we found far outweighed the devastation. We found generosity, compassion and love from our parish. The youth group and adult parishioners were wonderful. They helped remove the contents of the house. Father Peter and Father John were there working right alongside of everyone. The different organizations were very generous and without their help we could not have gotten by. We wish to thank you all, for you are truly living the words of Christ with charity and love. To know your parish is there when you need them, is such a comfort through the hard times. We feel blessed to belong to such a loving parish. God Bless you all, The Gaynor Family
