Going Above and Beyond “Members Helping Members” Chamber member Continental Painting Corporation II owned by Gary Fouts has gone above and beyond the usual “Members Helping Members.” Recently Gary donated manpower for 4 days to help spruce up the buildings at the Hobe Sound Nature Center. Gary’s crew of 4 pressure washed the outside of all of the buildings at the center, including the decks, the restrooms and the shed. Then, with paint donated by Chamber member Sherwin Williams, Continental Painting painted and stained the outside of the main building. Gary has helped the Nature Center in the past and stated that he plans to continue to help take care of the facility for a few more years to come. Director, Debbie Fritz-Quincy, said, “we are so grateful to Gary and his crew for their efforts in giving the Nature Center a fresh new look for the new year.” To contact Gary Fouts of Continental Painting Corporation II, call 772-336-0524 or visit www.continental-painting.com. But, when you are not running late you make every light, there are never any slow drivers in your way and you avoid all the trains and bridge openings. How do we run late? We usually waste time. This month we are going to list two more time wasters that could cost you a closed sale. The time wasters in this article are not in any particular order but you should always be aware of them. 1. Personal Phone Calls and Meetings – We all know in today’s fast paced world that we must juggle our personal life and work life. It is very important when working on projects or getting ready to walk into a meeting with prospect or client that you are not in personal mode. When I work on my projects I turn my cell phone on silent and turn it over so I can’t see the screen, better yet turn it off! You can waste so much time by getting up just for a minute to take the call from Aunt Susie to talk about the BBQ on Saturday, next thing you know you start talking about the next holiday and poof there goes 30 minutes of wasted business time. I try to take one or two days a month where I schedule all my personal business that can’t be completed on the weekend, for example I would schedule someone for maintenance at my home from 1-4 in the afternoon and schedule as many people as possible on the same day and make personal calls at that time. Try to Schedule going to the bank or post office at 11:30am to beat the rush and still be back in the office by 12:30 to start working again. 2. Eating Alone – A perfect time to build relationships with prospects and clients is during a meal. I am not John Carr just talking lunch. I make sure that during the week I never eat alone! I have breakfast with referral partners, lunches and dinners with prospects and clients. The key here is not sell during these meals but to build relationships. Next month we will have more time wasters to avoid! Make sure that you make the most of your day by scheduling it properly. These few tips are part of a full Effective Use of Your Chamber Membership Program. If you would like more information about jrc Consulting Group please contact me at [email protected]. Thanks to his gift to the Martin County Community Foundation, his legacy and giving spirit lives on. “Mr. Joe” Carlin Leaves a Legacy to Martin County Community Foundation Good Samaritans, kind-hearted citizens, and generous individuals often go unnoticed by many, but for the recipients of their kindness, their contributions can be uplifting, even life changing. Hobe Sound resident Joseph “Mr. Joe” Carlin was a dedicated volunteer and guardian angel to many, prior to his passing on June 20, 2014. For years, his philanthropy anonymously supported hundreds of local residents whether by covering the dining tabs of Martin County Sheriff ’s deputies or covering student needs at his neighborhood preschool where he also volunteered. “Mr. Joe, as the children and staff referred to him, was a very giving and generous man. On several occasions, he overheard me speaking to a teacher about a child whose shoes or clothes were either too big or too small. He would hand me cash and ask me to buy the child clothing, always asking me not to tell anyone. He also anonymously paid for a special needs student’s summer camp tuition,” said Colleen Gitschier, manager of Hobe Sound Early Learning Center. “After Mr. Joe was no longer able to volunteer at the Center, a little girl asked where he was. Many of the children loved him and looked for him to give them their lunch. We were all surprised because it had been months since the children had seen him. This is the kind of impact he made at the Center. We all miss him.” Mr. Joe’s legacy will forever honor his commitment to philanthropy. With the help of his wealth advisor, Craig Price of UBS Financial Services, Inc. and attorney, Steve Wood of McCarthy, Summers, Bobko, Wood, Norman, Bass & Melby, P.A, Carlin donated his IRA fund to the Martin County Community Foundation by naming the foundation as the beneficiary. This gift established The Mary Catherine, Mary Elizabeth and Joseph Carlin Fund. The permanent endowment was established in in memory of Carlin, as well as his late wife Mary Elizabeth, and sister Mary Catherine, both who passed following battles with cancer. As the earnings of the endowment grow, the Martin County Community Foundation will award the funds in the form of grants to support causes that Carlin was passionate about, including but not limited to early learning, breast cancer treatment and care, end of life care, and American veterans. Thanks to his gift to the Martin County Community Foundation, “Mr. Joe” Carlin’s legacy and giving spirit lives on, continuing to make a positive impact in our community. To learn how the Martin County Community Foundation can assist with your personalized philanthropy plans, call 772-288-3795 or visit YourMCCF.org. The mission of the Martin County Community Foundation is to facilitate philanthropy. Established in 1988, it is a nonprofit, charitable foundation consisting of named funds established by many separate donors to support the common good. The Martin County Community Foundation serves as a vehicle for donors to make positive, long-term change by supporting causes and organizations they are passionate about. For more information, call 772-288-3795 or visit YourMCCF.org. Exercise for Health and Wellness risk of heart disease. You do not have to run a marathon or swim the English channel to get these benefits. Three sessions of cardio three times a week can increase your endurance and help you shed unwanted pounds. While there is a great deal of debate about what sort of exercise you should perform, consistency is key. Selecting a form of exercise that you enjoy increases the chances of you sticking with it, and this is critical for long-term success. Strength training is not only critical for the strength of your muscles, but the strength and stability of your bones and joints. While cardio is often touted as the best way to burn muscle, an intense bout of resistance training can increase your metabolism for up to 24 hours, causing you to burn quite a bit of fat. As we age, we experience both muscle loss and a decrease in the strength of our bones, and resistance training is the only way to avoid this. A Most of us enjoy the many benefits of today’s technology. We use our computers or smart phones to do almost everything, from ordering a pizza to handling our financials. Unfortunately, the criminal also likes to use this same technology to victimize unsuspecting and trusting members of our community. Believe it or not, we may give them the very information they need to ruin our credit or create havoc with our finances. One of the most common ploys used by the criminal is called Phishing. This is pronounced “FISHING.” As you would expect, this has nothing to do with the relaxing activity so many of us enjoy. In fact, the only real connection to our favorite pass time is that they use the bait to catch us off guard. Phishing is when the criminal uses the identity of a legitimate organization to obtain your personal information. Their ultimate goal is to acquire sensitive information, such as account user names or passwords, credit card information, or other personal information they may use for fraudulent activities. Phishing may be done over the phone, but is more often accomplished via electronic communications, such as through email. You may receive an email from a bank with an offer so good you can barely resist providing your personal information. Perhaps you received an email from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) indicating you are at risk of being audited and you can avoid this by immediately paying a small fee. Most recently we have seen emails being sent to website domain owners indicating their domain may have been hijacked. One thing all of these emails have in common (aside from being complete scams) is that they request personal or financial information and contain links to fraudulent locations. Sometimes Dennis Root the links will actually Dennis Root Public Safety download a virus to Foundation, Inc. you computer and we all know how dangerous and destructive that can be. To protect yourself from such risks, DO NOT provide personal or sensitive information or click on links contained in unsolicited emails. Review the emails carefully and never open documents attached to an email from an unknown source. When in doubt, throw it out! Delete the email without opening it or actively interacting with it.
