Communicare Baby Community Project
What is the project? Why participate in the project?
Soon after they are born your baby’s distinctive personality will start to shine through.
Your baby is taking in the sights and sounds of their new world and this will mould their
developing brain and personality. Listen to your baby! Even a little person has something to
tell you.
Project participation
As a parent of a baby aged 0-12 months you are invited to participate in the Baby
Community Project and receive a broad range of information to help you give your
baby the best start in life. To be eligible, you must either visit or be visited by the
Wungong Community Child Health Nurses, or live in the City of Armadale. Communicare
Communities for Children thanks the Wungong Community Child Health Nurses for
supporting the Project.
How the Project Works
Each time you attend a participating baby friendly community service in the Armadale
area, you can ask for a sticker for your booklet. You will know when a service is
participating in the Baby Community Project because they will have a poster up.
When you have 3 stickers
You can visit the Communicare Communities for Children office at Unit 6, 42 Fourth
Road, Armadale, and collect a gift for your baby.
When you collect another 3 stickers
You will be entitled to receive a gift voucher for yourself (you deserve it!).
When you collect another 4 stickers
You will be entitled to a family voucher for the whole family to enjoy. Where can I get a Passport?

Community Child Health Nurse
It is important that at 6 weeks your baby has their
first health check with the Community Child Health
Nurse. Don’t forget to ask for your sticker. Locations of
Community Child Health Nurses can be found on page 2.
Baby Rhyme Time
Baby Rhyme Time sessions are held at City of
Armadale Libraries from 10.30 - 11.00am on
different weekdays. Contact Seville Grove Library

Mother Nurture Group
Are you feeling a little overwhelmed with life with your
new baby? Would you like a space where you can share
your concerns, meet other mothers and learn new ways
to look after yourself and your baby?
Contact Communicare on 9497 8521 to enquire about
Mother Nurture groups in Armadale.

Sing to your baby and hang mobiles that play tunes.

Read to your baby. Books with texture develop your baby’s
sense of touch.
Avoid alcohol and smoking if breast feeding, as they pass
freely into your breast milk. Also too much caffeine via breast
milk may make baby irritable.

Pa Par When your baby has a drink, you should remember to have a drink
and/or a snack too.
Babies can learn to roll over very quickly – never leave them where
they can fall.
If you have older children do not leave baby with them unattended you might be alarmed by their idea of baby games.

Swimming lessons can start from four
months of age at Seadragonz - Forrestdale.

Better Beginnings
If you haven’t already received your Better Beginnings gift
bag from your Child Health Nurse, ask your local librarian.
Seville Grove Library hosts Better Beginnings parenting
workshops regularly. Receive a sticker for each workshop.
Join the library
Your baby can join the library. There are libraries in
Armadale, Kelmscott, Seville Grove and Mundijong.
Borrow baby books, Chatterbooks, parenting
resources and attend story time.
CLAN WA workshops and Family Support
CLAN WA offer free and low-cost workshops on a range of parenting and relationship
enhancing topics.
If you need more support with your parenting, CLAN WA can link you with an
experienced volunteer who has been where you are now and can offer you practical
support when you need it most.

• Support your baby’s right to feel safe and don’t force them
to go to a person if they are not ready.
• Let them warm up slowly by inviting the person to chat to
baby while you hold them. This will help your baby to trust
other people.
• Welcome them back to you with a big smile and a cuddle
when they have been brave and have been to other people.

It is natural for your child to be frightened or anxious when they
meet new people. If separated from parents or their regular carer
they feel threatened and unsafe.

• Create a safe place for their exploration so they don’t hurt
themselves or break something expensive.
• They are not being naughty, they want to learn. Smacking
causes confusion and fear.
• If you have to take something off them, give them something
else to focus on such as a toy.
• If you need to get some jobs done, take baby with you, talk
to them, sing to them, give them something to hold and
look at. Don’t leave them in front of the television while you
work.

Keep hot cups of tea/coffee out of baby’s reach.
Offer your baby water—flavoured milks and drinks will reduce
their appetite.

Time to Play
Now your child is mobile and more interested in toys, it is time to join a playgroup.
Armadale has more playgroups now than ever and there is one for everybody. Try these

Use old containers and cut holes so your child can post different
household objects. Otherwise you might find that they use the
kitchen bin to post the remote control.

Always speak respectfully and kindly to your child so they will learn
to speak this way to others—including you! Yelling, swearing and
hitting are behaviours you don’t want them to imitate.

Your baby may use a security blanket or favourite stuffed toy for
comfort especially in unfamiliar surroundings. This is important to
baby, so always remember to take it with you when you go out (and
don’t forget to bring it home with you!)

Your baby will love to play peek-a-boo. It teaches them that
mummy or daddy go away but then they come back.
They are starting to learn concepts such as up and down, hot and
cold, in and out. Use these concepts when you talk to baby.

clapping, waving and shaking rattles.

as your baby learns to crawl and walk.

Communicare Inc. is a dynamic not-for-profit organisation which helps more than
180,000 Australians every year. Supported by a staff of over 200, and a strong base
of volunteers, Communicare’s philosophy is one of local people helping local people.

Children’s Services
Since 1978 Communicare has been providing safe, stimulating and affordable Child
Care options for children aged from 0-15 years old. Communicare provides services to
over 500 children per day across 5 metropolitan sites and in over 70 Family Day Care
homes.
Family and Youth Services
Communicare’s Family Services are designed to build happy, healthy communities by
supporting individuals and families in need and encouraging them to grow. Over 4,000
families are assisted in any one year across all services including emergency relief,
financial counselling, cultural services, early intervention services and youth services.
Employment Services
Communicare has been involved in the provision of employment services since 1991.
Communicare provides services across seven sites nationally maintaining a high level
of service delivery. Clients are referred from Centrelink for the following services: job
matching, stream services, work experience and career profiling.
Education and Training Services
Communicare Education and Training provides both accredited and non-accredited
training. Programs are provided for people entering the workforce, changing career
paths or looking to improve and develop skills in their chosen profession. Communicare
offers training courses, traineeships and professional development training.
Accommodation and Therapeutic Services
Communicare’s Accommodation and Therapeutic Services (ATS) work towards
educating, and supporting, individuals, families and groups around issues of
crisis within relationships and/or circumstance. ATS provides services such as
accommodation, counselling, psychological services and professional development.
