NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE
N E I G H B O U R H O O D
For the past 100 years, Alex House has been hard
at work helping to build community – one individual
at a time. From our origins as a “fresh air camp” for
orphans from Vancouver to the present day we have
focused on creating opportunities for neighbours to
gather, grow, and build a spirit of community.
We want YOU to be a part of this unfolding story
by supporting our work through active membership in
Alexandra Neighbourhood House.
Your membership is not only a tangible sign of your
support for community engagement in White Rock/
South Surrey – it is also a sign of your support for the
neighbourhood house movement in Metro Vancouver.
We are part of a network of place-based agencies
striving to build safe, inclusive communities where
people have a sense of belonging, with the knowledge
that we can make a difference in our own lives, our
neighbourhoods, and our communities.
Your membership helps us to provide programs and
maintain our facilities. In return, you are eligible for
priority registration and/or reduced rates on some of
our programs and services; a subscription to our quarterly
newsletter and participation in our annual general
meeting – where you can have a voice in planning and
priorities for the future.

2nd Annual Fundraiser
Alexandra Neighbourhood House is excited to announce the return
of Oktoberfest Saturday, Sept 26, 2 to 7pm at Camp Alex!
This event is both a fund-raiser to help us continue to
deliver and expand our community programs and services,
and an opportunity to relax, enjoy some games and
entertainment, and – most of all – have fun with friends
and neighbours! There will be Bavarian-inspired food,
and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available for
sale. We’ll also have some great contests – like sausageeating and best dirndl or lederhosen – along with musical
entertainment from an amazing line-up of performers.
We’re extending an invitation to you and your friends and family to
join us for this event. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased through
our office, either in person or by phone (604-535-0015) or on-line at
www.alexhouse.net. Tickets include a meal and a drink.
We’re looking for volunteers to help us make this event the best
yet. We need a crew of thirty or more, so if you or someone you know
would like to work a two hour shift, please contact
[email protected] or call 604-535-0015 ext 236.

COMMUNITY CORNER
Engaging with Our Community at Alex House…
As I write this, we’re still in the midst of our summer day-camps, hosting an average of 40 children
daily at Camp Alex. Our excellent complement of summer youth staff and volunteers have also facilitated
a residential camp for supported adults, and are about to do the same for newcomer Canadian families. Meanwhile, our weekly Neighbourhood Fun Nights are more popular than ever, averaging 50 to 60
attendees. Camps conclude on August 28, and our last NFN is August 19. And from there, we enter into
an equally busy fall of programs and planning for our big centennial event in 2016.
Have you got an idea for a class, event, or program? Are you looking for an opportunity to give back to your
community by bringing people together? Why not give me a call at 604-535-0015 ext 236, or email
[email protected]. I’ll help you develop your vision, get the word out, and line up a venue.

Alex House Welcomes New Youth Leaders!
It is no secret that the teen years are filled with wonderment, a strong sense of justice, and untapped energy
ready to make a difference in the world. Grateful for the opportunity, this dynamic and diverse group of youth
have landed the new Alexandra Neighbourhood House Youth Leader and Youth Assistant Leader positions.
The team commits to meetings on a regular basis, facilitated by Youth Leaders Carmen Steynberg and Kiko Kung,
to plan youth activities that encourage youth engagement in their community. Within their first few weeks, the
team has already completed two comprehensive leadership training days, planned their first youth event, and
carried out an event at Bakerview Park. They look forward to planning and hosting their next event “Art Jam”, at
Alex House, where they hope to see attendance from many members of the community. Date and activities TBD.

buildings and grounds. And all just in time for the
41st Annual Alexandra Festival, where people were
loving the new picnic tables and firepit benches. As
always, we are very grateful!

Nov 11 and for the holiday season,
Dec 21 through Jan 3, 2016.
fall 2015 vol XXXXI issue 1 pg 7
Letter from the E.D.
We live in one of the most beautiful
places in the world and for this,
I’m grateful. I am also grateful to
be working for an organization that
values diversity, and supports
individuals and groups to have a
strong voice in their community.
Of course this does not always mean we are in
full agreement. It does mean we must hear things
that we may find difficult, and trust each other to
do our best to create a healthy community.
100 years is a long time to be in community. On
the west coast, it’s a staggering amount of time,
but Alexandra Neighbourhood House has done it!
For almost 100 years we have managed to ebb
and flow with our community’s needs. We have
made little changes to how we do our work, and
some really big changes too, along the way. Sometimes we ride the gentle wave, other times we
are pulled by the current and nudged in a new
direction.
What I find amazing is that our neighbours, our
community, and our participants continue to come
along for the ride. Our friends and champions carry
our mission in their hearts, reaching through the
great times, as well as the challenges, to place one
foot in front of the other to move forward.
We hope you will all join us as we head towards
our 2016 Centennial year. We want to celebrate
with you, and create a legacy at our Camp
Alexandra site.
Join us Oct 7 at 6pm for our AGM – a brief meeting,
with a community gathering to learn more about our
Centennial and how to get involved.
Don’t forget our Rose Tea Aug 26 when we will
recognize our volunteers, and honour Donna Mercer for
her volunteer contributions at Alex House, and throughout
the community!
Finally – Neighbourhood Fun Nights
formally came to a close Aug 19 with an
end of summer BBQ. It is followed by an
Outdoor Movie Night Sept 2 from
8-10pm. (see page 5) Movie night is
generously sponsored by White Rock
Orthodontic Centre.
Enjoy the final days of summer!

100 Years Celebrating the Spirit of Community
1916-2016
Alexandra Neighbourhood House turns one hundred
years old in 2016! And over those many years, adults,
children, seniors and families have camped, played,
learned, volunteered, shared, explored and grown
through a wide variety of programs and events offered at
Camp Alexandra or other venues in our neighbourhood.
We need YOU to share YOUR STORIES with us so we
can create a vibrant, living record of how Alexandra
Neighborhood House has impacted lives, families and
the community since 1916.
As part of the project, Lois Peterson is leading a volunteer-run initiative called ‘Your Stories Tell Our Story’. Do
you have a story to share? Are you interested in becoming a
volunteer interviewer? If so, contact the YSTOS project at
[email protected].
We are also looking for volunteers who can help us
plan events, undertake historical research, recruit sponsors,
donors, and volunteers, and take part in developing and
manifesting the projects and programs we envision. If
you would like more information, would like to pitch in
or would be prepared to participate in a short survey or
interview about what Alexandra Neighborhood House
means to you contact Neil Fernyhough at 604-535-0015
ext 236 or [email protected].

Anyone who is unable to attend a
program because we have had to change
