Each summer, the Krasl Art Center welcomes thousands of guests to experience a diverse array of art made by some of the best artists in the country. Whether you’re joining us from across the street, across the state or from across the country, we hope you’ll enjoy your time at one of Southwest Michigan’s finest celebrations of the arts. Our aim is to make the Art Fair a great experience for you by showcasing a variety of high quality, handmade fine art and fine crafts that you will find unique and inspiring. Mission Bringing People & Art Together Vision To Improve the Quality of Life Through Art OUR Goal To provide communication and aesthetic appreciation of the visual fine arts through the use of education Once you find that one-of-a-kind piece that meets your desires, buy it! Your purchase will support an artist who is living and breathing creativity into daily life. The Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff is one of the biggest fundraisers for the Krasl Art Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Funds generated from the event help us support our mission of bringing people and art together by providing art-making opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds. Photo by Gregg Rizzo Art knows no boundaries and invites all to participate, so we constantly strive for ways to connect people with art. With your help, we’ll continue to present original works of art in our galleries, collect and preserve sculpture, and deliver quality art education. The Art Fair wouldn’t be possible without the support of our community partners, businesses and sponsors. We give a special thanks to the City of St. Joseph for many years of outstanding support. We also thank our dedicated staff and hundreds of tireless volunteers. It is only through their efforts this event—that began as a clothesline art show— has transformed into one of national prominence. Because of the efforts of so many, the Art Fair is 8th in Art Fair Calendar’s “Best Art Fairs in the U.S.,” 12th in Sunshine Artist Magazine, and 48th in Art Fair Source Book. Have a wonderful time enjoying the arts, interacting with the artists, and supporting the arts community. Sara Shambarger Director of Art Fairs Julia Gourley Krasl Art Center Executive Director 2 | KRASL ART FAIR on the Bluff ABOUT the Krasl Art Center The Krasl Art Center began in 1962 when a handful of local artists held a clothesline exhibition. Those artists went on to form the St. Joseph Art Association. Through the beneficence of local industrialist George Krasl and his wife, Olga, the Krasl Art Center was built in 1979. The center provides residents and visitors the opportunity to experience art through high-quality exhibitions, a collection of contemporary sculpture, educational opportunities and thought-provoking arts programming. Sculpture in the Krasl Art Center’s collection includes works by renowned artists Dale Chihuly, Richard Hunt and George Rickey. Outdoor sculpture is placed in communities from New Buffalo to South Haven for viewers to enjoy 24/7. The Krasl Art Center’s 10th Biennial Sculpture Invitational features the work of 25 notable sculptors. Sculptures are placed at five locations in St. Joseph and Benton Harbor. Indoors, the artlab gallery is dedicated to art that is off the wall, off the pedestal and into the space. Emerging artists use floor, walls and ceiling to present experimental projects in the gallery. The Dar Davis Gallery and Gallery II welcome numerous exhibitions throughout the year. Exhibitions are free and open to the public. The Krasl Art Center is a member-based organization. Members enjoy benefits including special rates on classes, access to exclusive programming and discounts in the KAC gift shop. Stop into the Krasl Art Center during the Art Fair to experience the art that is offered and become a member! Buying original art not only beautifies your living or work space, but it’s also inspiring and connects us to the artist and how the piece makes us feel. Unlike mass-produced items, original art is unique and makes a great gift. When you purchase a piece of art from the Art Fair, you are taking home something that is truly memorable. 19 mediums are featured. We are happy to welcome 50 returning artists and 166 new artists. The Krasl Art Fair’s goal is to provide high quality art to the Midwest and a nurturing environment to artists. Over 75% of all artists reapply for next year’s Art Fair. Visiting artists increase business at local restaurants and hotels. Patrick Dragon (Booth #138) What should you buy? Whether or not you purchase art completely depends on how it makes you feel! If it stirs something inside of you, if it speaks to you, then it’s probably something you would enjoy living with. Artwork that draws you in has the potential to be something you will treasure for years to come. The more art you experience, the more you’ll know what kind of art you like. There’s no better place than an art fair to explore and discover new mediums. The original art at this art fair includes a variety of styles, mediums and techniques. The artists featured this weekend have been selected because of the quality of their work. Affordable PIECES for everyone Budgeting is always important when deciding to make a purchase. Luckily, no matter what you want to spend, there’s something for everyone at this year’s Art Fair. Artists have a wide range of prices within their body of work. Each year, over 6,000 water bottles are sold. 978 artists applied Limited editions, giclée reproductions and smaller sizes make a great affordable option for those starting their art collections. If there is a more expensive piece you just can’t live without, ask about a payment plan; most artists are more than happy to discuss payment options. The Art Fair is built on three foundations: the artists, the public and the volunteers. to be a part of the Krasl Art Fair in 2014. Artists from 35 states and 1 other country 475 volunteers are represented. definitions Limited Edition: an original image or a reproduction limited to a specific small number of editions. Giclée: (pronounced “zhee-clay”) a technology for fine art or photograph reproduction using a high-quality inkjet printer to make individual copies. Signed and Numbered: original prints are traditionally signed in pencil by the artist—the number to the right of the slash indicates the size of the edition; the number to the left is the actual number of the print. give their time to help with the Art Fair. 8 | KRASL ART FAIR on the Bluff July 12 & 13, 2014 | St. Joseph, Michigan | 9 Thank you Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff Committee Members Chris Bacehowski Thank you to our volunteers who make the Krasl Art Fair possible every year.
