Johnson will look to defend her title this week at Brunswick Zone XL in Romeoville, Ill., where a field of more than 170 of the best women bowlers in the world will battle for one of the most prestigious titles in bowling at the 2008 U.S. Women’s Open. Players will compete in four eight-game qualifying blocks over four days beginning Aug. 1. The field then will be cut to the top 16, who will compete in ESPN-taped television matches on Aug. 5 and 6. The winner will take home a $25,000 first prize (based on 200 entries). Official practice sessions will take place Thursday at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. “I just felt like I was in a really good place, like nobody was even around me out there,” said Johnson, who also won the 1996 U.S. Women’s Open. “Once I stepped out on the lanes, I felt aggressive and focused. I hadn’t felt that good in a very long time. Everything just felt like it fell into place for me. Physically, I felt great, and mentally, nothing really mattered except putting it to the pins.” Johnson has made her mark not just in topflight women’s bowling, but also in professional bowling overall. July 31, 2008 Preparations For USBC’S New Home in Texas Begin GREENDALE—Renovations to the United States Bowling Congress’ future home in Arlington, Texas, are underway with the goal of staff being in their offices by Nov. 3. The creation of the International Bowling Campus has started with general remodeling of the main building at 621 Six Flags Drive. Construction on the 20-lane International Training Center will begin later this year with an anticipated completion in spring 2009. Also set for 2009 is the opening of the new International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame after moving from its current home in St. Louis. The International Bowling Campus, in the heart of Arlington’s entertainment and sports district, will be the home of about 200 USBC, Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America and IBM/HF employees. The move to Texas from USBC’s current home in Greendale, Wis., will enable USBC and BPAA to integrate operations for the betterment of the sport including the growth and protection of competitive bowling. “While our goal is to ensure as smooth a transition as possible, with any undertaking of this magnitude, problems may occur,” said USBC President Jeff Bojé. “We are committed to addressing any problems as quickly and efficiently as possible.” In addition to USBC, BPAA and IBM/HF, the bowling campus will include The Bowling Foundation, International Bowling Pro Shops & Instructors Association, Strike Ten Entertainment, The Bowling Center Management School and the Billiard & Bowling Institute of America which currently are located at BPAA’s headquarters. However we still needs two bowlers to complete our 64 member roster. Please call me at (562) 423-1567 for more information and sign on for the start of a 51st season Monday, August 18 at Cerritos Lanes, We still don’t have the LA and OC book averages but expect them within the next couple of weeks. The cards submitted by team captains at the July meeting will be returned to them opening day, confirming or correcting averages listed. We forgot to include a couple of notes in our last column about Alberta Stoute having eye surgery and seeing real good now, and also our annual Happy Anniversary wishes to Frances and Bob Stickney who celebrated their 64th year together on June 30. We are sorry to report upcoming surgery for Hedy Schoner but she will return to sub when medics release her. Also, Team captain Ada Burriis scheduled for right hand surgery and will need a sub until she can return, however, she will bowl the first two weeks. In addition to competing for the coveted U.S. Women’s Open crown, participants who register for the PBA Women’s Tour Trials will have the opportunity to qualify for the seven-event PBA Women’s Series, which will run in conjunction with PBA Tour events this fall. The top 12 finishers in the Women’s Tour Trials will earn exemptions for the PBA Women’s Series and join last year’s Women’s Series winners Diandra Asbaty, Shannon Pluhowsky, Joy Esterson and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard to make up the 16-player field. The championship match of all PBA Women’s Series events will be televised as part of the ESPN telecasts for the seven Denny’s PBA Tour events. Those players competing in the Women’s Series will be required to become PBA members, but will only have to join PBA once they qualify. Winning at Cal Bowl the hard way, winning five straight matches in the single elims to take home a nice $2,300 at popular Cal Bowl. Our return to CAL was just great, as we had a nice 198 entrants in the early 3- Squad Event which had squads at 12:30-2:00 & 3:30. Even with many of our regulars from CAL in Vegas for sweepers! Side pots went for $202 a game and in the ABTA side pots are only $2.00 per game Due to the nice turnout 50 bowlers advanced to the semis. Leading the Semis was rejuvenated Speedy Bryant +161. So he would sit out and be able to bowl the title game. Right behind was the smooth Ramiro Garcia at +150. So Speedy would sit out and bowl for the title and Ramiro to receive a first round bye in the single elims and enter in round two. It took a huge +89 for the men and +64 for 3 guaranteed women to make the Sweet 16 Single Elim Finals. The Bowlers took to the lanes. In the first round single elims losing were Vuong Do, La Sandra Chaney, Bill Nord, Sue Purdie. Hong Kha, TimTran, and Lynn Waldie. Checks of $100 in 10-16th places were theirs. In round two being eliminated were Ramiro Garcia, Glen Dantes, Jerry Cant and Chris Abing. They cashed in 6-9 th places and $110 each. Round three had Vic Hilvano best Micheal Gill 237-193. Erick Lam finished strong to edge J. T. Jackson 228-208. They were 4th and 5th, and $120 each, with great bowling. Vic and Erick to meet for the right to bowl Speedy for the title. In an exciting game Erick again won out at the end and Vic who is now one of our finest bowlers was 3rd with another great showing. Erick off to the title match vs Speedy. The title game was set and the horses were paid! Lam returned a big $93 in the horse bets for everyone who had him at $5.00 entry. Speedy led off with a strike, and Spare, and was bowling a Dutch 200 game after frame 8 which is decent but he had a big problem here as Lam was Striking on every Ball with the front eight. He then left a weak 10 pin to end his chance of a perfect game. Speedy struck out but way too late. Lam wins it big 279/299-218/226 . Great bowling by one of the Good (562) 868-7164 www.abta1.com Guys. He bowls with us most every week and is a gentleman and well deserving! Congrats Erick! Great bowling by Speedy,a long time member who has done most everything in our club. He is an ABTA Blueblood and will be in the ABTA League Thurs at Cal this winter. Great Bowling Speedy! Vic Hilvano on a real roll could have certainly won this one, as he was on his game. Vic is also an ABTA veteran, and did so well again. Great bowling! Tourney Hi Qualifiers were Kevin Blunt at a big +213 for the men and Debra Sanders led the ladies +127. They both get paid entries. Desi Nixon was last standing in the 3-6-9. He missed on shot 2 and settled for a $50 Consolation for beer money and the pot is now $1,800 at Westminster Lanes this Saturday. The Match Game WAS Matched at a 224 by two of our good supporters Micheal Gill and Lenny Riley and they shared the $1.330 pot and$565 each. The Pot is estimated at $1,300 Saturday. Match Series worth $320, was also Matched by a very deserving Dom La Guardia at a 503 and again it is estimated at $300 this week for only a (562)-228-3960 (Cell) ABTA “Tournament” Westminster Lanes 6471 Westminster Ave. Westminster (714)-893-5005 405 Freeway to Westminster East 1 mile, or take 22 freeway to Knott /Golden west, to Garden Blvd 1 mile west to Edwards left 1 mile to center on right Open to new Members up to 209 Avg. Hawaii Trip is July,2009 DEL RIO LANES 7502 E Florence Ave Downey Mimsie Rosenfeld was the one who made the three-hour roundtrip from Canoga Park to pick up the stamps, but she didn’t paste them in the books. Her customers did that who bowled on Blue Chip Bowling nights (Sundays) at Canoga Park Bowl in the 1960s. The house lights went down and bowlers won Blue Chip-brand redemption stamps for knocking over certain pins. Mimsie, who died in June, and her husband, Nat, built the bowl in 1958. It was Nat’s first venture into bowling and his base for a long and active record with BCSC, including the presidency in the early 1970s. During their tenure, Nat and Mimsie got away every year to Hawaii—but not just for fun. They accompanied winners in a Canoga Park Bowl juniors tournament. And for more than 30 years, Mimsie was active in the West Coast Junior Elims (Canoga Park was one of eight original participating centers), assisting the bowlers, helping with the paperwork for scholarships the kids could win, and more. It was a program of which she was very proud. After Nat died in 1985, Mimsie ran Canoga Park for about a year and a half, then became a partner in and board member at Mission Hills Bowl. They not only grace us on Sundays for practice (please no autographs), but they also bowl great in league play. Isabelle shot a 642 series on Funseekers and Keren bowled a 223 on Tavern Guild. This pairing is a match made in heaven, awesome bowling. France must have some great bowling alleys to practice in. Sweetness Quote of the Week: “Maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you’ve had, and what you’ve learned from them, and less to do with how many birthdays you’ve celebrated.” Canoga Park Bowl 20122 Vanowen St. • Winnetka, CA 91306 818-340-5190 • FAX: 818-883-1202 • OPEN 24 HOURS www.canogaparkbowl.com E-mail:[email protected] Page 9 National Deaf Bowling News BOWL WINNETKA — It’s nice to know that the bowlers here at Canoga Park Bowl look forward to our weekly report of high scores. Deaf Pro Frank Gallo Wins A PBA Regional Tournament by Connie Marchione FOREST HILLS, MD...My friend Bob Cosgrove who publishes the Bowl Magazine in Washington, DC emailed to me in large bold letters, “FRANK GALLO WON A PBA TOURNAMENT”. We knew that deaf Frank Gallo, Jr., Newport News, VA joined the PBA way back in 1972 and bowled in countless PBA, regional and senior events and never won one. So I am getting the results and will tell the story later. Here is the results of the 72nd annual GLDBA Tournament held last April 17-20 at Columbus, Ohio. MALUCCI WINS GLDBA’S HERMAN CAHEN MASTERS COLUMBUS, OH...The Columbus Association of the Deaf hosted the 72nd annual Great Lakes Deaf Bowling Association tournament with the men’s tournament at Columbus Palace Lanes and the women’s 61st annual GLDWBA at HP Lanes with Ramada Plaza Hotel as its headquarters. The men’s bowling festivities began with the 26th annual Herman Cahen Masters and Senior Citizens Masters, both a one-day events on Friday April 18. The much heralded Carl Malucci from Whittier California who was the runner-up in the last year’s Cahen Masters at Milwaukee, led the 3 games qualifying round with a 750 scratch score. Then he went on leading after the 2nd qualifying round to be the top seed in the finals in which he beat the young much heralded two handed bowler from Akron, Josh Phelps for the championship. (Sorry no scores were given to me.) Malucci got $1,900 for his victory and Phelps $950 as the runner-up as the event paid down to 42nd place. In the Senior Citizen Masters running at the same time, Tom Whitacre (Toledo) beat the GLDBA secretary Treasurer Mike Jasko (Cleveland) in all Ohio finals for the $600 prize. Jasko pocketed $300 for his runner-up finish and the event paid to 20 places. OVERRATED BOWLERS ROLLS 3311 FOR THE TEAM TITLE The team event drew 64 teams, two better than last year’s low of 62 at Milwaukee. A team named Overrated Bowlers proved themselves at that, scoring 3311 scratch and 3368 with handicap to win both handicap $3,800 and actual $600 top prizes. DJ Powell (IN) led with tournament high 750 series, followed by John Taylor (NY) 649, Josh Phelps (OH) 618, Kevin Moran (NY) 636 and James Morris (MD) 658. Last year’s champion from Detroit with a deaf record 3348 series, Always Pocket 1&3 tried but came short with 3185 actual for 2nd ($400)but its 3267 with handicap put it in 4th place ($600). The handicap 2nd place $1,900 went to Zuchegno’s Guys’ 3296 which had 3053 actual pinfall. The handicap team prizes ran to 16 places and scratch prizes to 8 places. ROCHESTER DUO AGGAS & ROOD, JR TOOK DOUBLES TITLES A couple of Rochester bowlers Darrell Aggas (676) and Rod Rood, Jr. (733) teamed up for 1409 scratch and 1475 with handicap to win both actual and handicap doubles titles. They took the handicap $1,520 and actual $260 prizes. Californians Mark Fisser (681) and Carl Malucci (723) placed 2nd in both with 1404 with zero handicap for $760 and $180, The handicap ran to 39 places and actual prizes to 8 places. CANADIAN GEORGE HALAS ROLLS 733 & 775 FOR SINGLES TITLES George Halas always made his trips from Canada to bowl in GLDBA because there is no big deaf tournament like GLDBA in his country. After placing third in the Fridays’s Cahen Masters for $475, Halas rolled 733 and 775 with handicap to claim both actual ($130)and handicap ($760) Singles titles. Sammy Collins from Georgia took the 2nd place handicap $380 prize with his 740 total. Californian Fisser hit 708 scratch for 2nd place actual $100 but his zero handicap placed him in tie for 10th place $110.00. The singles prizes ran to 8 places in acttual and handicap 79 places. POWELL 2091 TOP SCRATCH BUT HALAS’ 2112 TAKES HANDICAP ALL-EVENTS. Indianapolis’ D. J. Powell hit 750 in Team, 612 in Singles and 729 in Doubles for the high all-events scratch total for actual 1st place $70.00 but Canadian Halas has bigger handicap added to his 1986 to total 2112 to take the handicap All-events prize of $280. So Powell’s zero handicap 2091 placed 2nd for $160 and Californian Malucci placed 2nd in actual with his 2026 scratch for $55.and $70 extra in handicap 10th. The handicap prizes ran to 27 places and actual to 8th place. Space limitations permit me to list just the winners of GLDBA’s three optional prize events. Malucci’s 1413 (690 & 723) took the optional Singles-Doubles event actual $50 prize while Halas collected handicap $200 with his 1442 handicap total. Bob Olson, Rochester had Team and Singles event handicap total of 1383 to claim the Senior Citizens Team/Singles Events prize of $250. CLEVELAND WILL HOST 2009 73rd ANNUAL GLDBA CLEVELAND...Cleveland Association of the Deaf will host the 73rd annual tournament with dates set as April 16-19, 2009 at Freeway Lanes and Holiday Inn as headquarters. The last time Cleveland hosted was in 2003 with 79 teams. Back in 1970 Cleveland had the deaf record 138 teams and again in 1977 drew 118 teams. In 1985 it had 90 and 1993 with 98 teams. Congratulations Lou Ambrosine & Alex McKendall Both Shot 300 Monday in the Vegas Bound at Oak Tree Lanes First 300 games by both bowlers!! Over 230 bowlers from as far as Oklahoma traveled to Laughlin Nevada’s Riverside Casino to join in the fun. The lure of reestablishing friendships, good prize funds and other special giveaways are just too much to miss. It also helps that Ralph Morton has a support staff that goes out of its way to keep the tournament problems to a minimum. As in past tournaments, two squads were established with two divisions. Sunday’s Squad A competed with Wednesday’s Squad B, Squads A & B competed Monday as did Tuesday’s Squad A & B thus forming three tournaments. Divisions were established within those tournaments to balance the high and low average teams. Basically team averages above and below 325 determined the divisions. Handicapping was 100% from 220. Bowlers were allowed to team with any partner outside their respective squads. Conway Proves His Way is the Best Way in Rocky Marsh Doubles by Joy McGregor ANAHEIM—John Conway is certainly a force to be reckoned with and “Big-Bad” is a good moniker. Every week he makes the headlines and this week is no exception; this week, he IS the headline with his games of 252-268 and 224 for 744 and 204 to top the leader board at 948. John currently holds the high average for the guys -- a whopping 232 and high series at 999. Just awesome, John! Another familiar name, (last week’s headliner) and no stranger to the spotlight is dapper Terry Brent whose consistent games of 258213-256 (727) and 202 lands him in second place this week at 929. Frank Bellinder, nipping at Terry’s heels, started slowly this ‘HOT’ July morning with 194 and then zoned in on a very good line, honing it a little more each game as he turned in 224-232 and then, WOW, a 278 for a nice 928 set. Shig Shozi is bowling oh-so-well this summer and “shoz” off with some very HOT numbers: 235-235 and 251 for 721 and added 206 to tally 922. Ho hum!! Rey Ortiz decided to join the fun so he donned his party hat and went to town to wrap up his first 900 of the season. Rey tossed 222257-181 and 248 to post 908. A very fine showing Rey, keep it up! Larry Green was a “Green Machine” Friday morning and gave those ol’ knees a good workout on games of 237-234-213 and 220 to record 904. Alan Bloom truly DID “bloom” this fine sunny morning and showed he has all the right ingredients, cultivating his first 900 of the season. Alan tossed 217-258-184 and a very nice come-back 243 game to register 902. Nice bowling Alan, even if it WAS against my team! More HOT scores: Willy Bordenave 257-898, Bob Gosnell 248 (701)-878, David Wright 225-875, Juan Sandoval 236-865, Kantral Williams 246-860, Tony Chaco 248-850, Carl Adinolfi 241-847, Rich Heid 248-841, Tony Angulo 257-838, Jack Wilson 213-836, Ron Douglass 235-828, Lloyd Thierry 223-828, John Phillips 233824, Kerry Wright 224-822, Gino Vassallo 223-815, Gloria Ferrulli 215-803, Jack Polee 268-800, Ed Mote 223, Dahana Klerer 220, E.J. Rogers 220, Fred Voysey 218, Al Lara 216, Hong Kha 216, Janine Ditch 214, Ron Marcus 214, Willie Harris 211 and Eva Munson 201. Rose Williams is our featured lady bowler for the second week in a row. Showing her bowling prowess, Rose fashioned games of 203184-244 and 204 to record a fine 836 set. Good consistent bowling, Rose, can we make it three in a row? Reminder: The So.
