The 2010 event marks the first time in the tournament’s 91-year history that the USBC Women’s Championships has been held in a conventioncenter setting. Since 1997, the tournament has been held at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., every third year, but all other events were held in traditional bowling centers. From the world’s largest mobile scoreboard to a unique vendor area, many of the bowlers find the new additions to the tournament to be step in the right direction and look forward to seeing a similar set-up in Syracuse, N.Y., for the 2011 Women’s Championships. Carol Goebel of Fond du Lac, Wis., found the convention-center setting and the city of El Paso to be very welcoming. This was her 17th trip to the Women’s Championships. “I love it,” said Goebel, who bowls at Karl Ray Lanes. “This place is immaculate. It’s great that they’re really catering to the women. It’s just been an awesome experience. Every person in El Paso has been wonderful and friendly.” Jessica Urias of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., made her sixth Women’s Championships appearance this year and enjoyed the new look and feel. “There’s no comparison,” said Urias, who bowls regularly at Tahoe Bowl. “Some of the past tournaments seemed like a regular house tournament and not a national event. The scoreboards are great, and the stadium-like bleachers really let people take in the action.” Urias also enjoyed the challenge on the tournament lanes and likes that bowlers have to make their best shots to score well. “Once the shot changed, it was a challenge to me to find the right line,” Urias said. “But that’s my job as a bowler- to find the right look.” Tracy Forst of West Jordan, Utah, believes a lot of the bowlers will be surprised when they walk into the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center this year. “I think a lot of them will see it and think that it’s pretty cool,” said Forst, who made her 20th tournament appearance. “A lot of them have probably never seen one of the builds at the Open (Championships), so it will be a surprise. This is one of the reasons I really wanted to bowl this year.” Forst also saw the advantages of the event being held continued on page 7 BALTIMORE—Hall of Famer Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., re-wrote the Professional Bowlers Association history book Sunday when he defeated top qualifier Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, 268-224, to win the Lumber Liquidators Marathon Open at AMF Country Club Lanes. With his 35th career victory, breaking his tie for third place on the all-time PBA Tour titles list with Mark Roth, Weber denied Scroggins’ bid to become 2009-10 PBA Player of the Year, and handed that crown to his long-time rival, Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla. Williams therefore becomes the first to win the PBA Player of the Year title seven times, breaking a tie with the late Earl Anthony. Williams, with 47 career titles, and Anthony, with 43, are now the only two with more PBA titles than Weber. “I feel like I just won my first title,” the teary-eyed Weber said. “I don’t know what to say. It’s been three years since I won. I thought I was never going to win again.” Weber led the title match throughout, starting with five strikes before converting a single-pin spare. He then threw another four strikes to end Scroggins’ hopes for a third 2009-10 title and his first Player of the Year award. Scroggins entered the finals in “900” Global is a big hit in ABTA/Brunswick West Covina Event. Brunswick West Covina Lanes was host of the ABTA Easter Event with “900” Global presenting the “Dare To Compare” Ball presentations and demonstrations there. From the left, Dave Smart, Director of Sales for “900” Global, and “900” Global Staffers/ local standouts/ professional Bowlers Brandon Mc Ginness and Missy Bellinder were on hand to assist and instruct the bowlers who participated in the ball comparison presentation for the ABTA Members. 6 Gamer - $300.00 1st Place NEW DAY AND START TIME!! On breaking his titles tie with Roth, Weber said, “I never thought I’d get to 34 titles, let alone pass Mark Roth. He was my idol growing up. I feel continued on page 4 Was Pete Webers “Chop” for Stone or Scroggins? Walter Wins Seventh PBA Player of the Year Honor by Jerry Schneider BALTIMORE — For the second consecutive year, the Professional Bowlers Association’s Chris Schenkel Player of the Year race came down to the final game and the eventual winner had to watch from the sidelines to await his fate. When it was over, Walter Ray Williams Jr. won a record seventh Player of the Year honor at the conclusion of the season-ending Lumber Liquidators Marathon Open in Baltimore April 4, after going into the event tied in the points race with Bill O’Neill. Mike Scroggins was third, a longshot, but still in the mix until he lost in the title match to Pete Weber. Williams thus became the first to win the PBA Player of the Year title seven times, breaking a tie with the late Earl Anthony. And at age 50, Williams also became the oldest to win the crown breaking the previous record of 45 held by Anthony. He also is thought to be the oldest player in any major sport to win his sport’s seasonlong points or “most valuable” title. “I could never have imagined winning Player of the Year seven times and at my age I didn’t think it was even a possibility,” Williams said. “But after I won the first tournament of the season I thought if I could win one more, or a continued on page 7 Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr. Bowling News Honor Roll Name Score bobby campagnale 805/300 dion morris sr 300 scott vasquez 300 jose gutierrez 300 dave wodka 825 roosevelt nunnery 300 dave steward 827/300 victor berge 300 janet pollock 726 Date Center 03-31-10del rosa lanes 03-31-10cal bowl 03-31-10 mission hills bowl 04-01-10 mission hills bowl 04-01-10 mission hills bowl 04-02-10 wagon wheel bowl 04-02-10 wagon wheel bowl 04-03-10 hemet lanes 04-05-10 harleys simi bowl ATTENTION ALL BOWLERS: bowl an honor score THIS WEEK & E-MAIL by Tuesday Noon YOUR NAME, SCORE, DATE & CENTER & you will be on the front page. e-mail to: [email protected] men: 300 or 800 Women: 298,299,300 or 700+ Mark Your Bowling Calendar ! In fact, we should add we had perfect hosts in every way from Melvin, our driver for Odessey Bus Charters; Jerry, our Fremont Hotel reservations expert; and most especially Roberta McNaught and Karen Mauricio entertaining us on the bus. Our Barstow stops to and from Vegas was also great for shopping and food. We regret reporting last minute cancellations for Merlene Eash and Lu Colussi and the unexpected illness for Erma Palmer in Vegas. Her daughters-in-law, Ruth and Sandy, took good care of her and she returned home feeling ok. However, she will be seeing the doctor and calling us later regarding what might have happened. Obviously, the 57-seat bus provided plenty of seats for just over 20 passengers so we all stretched out, played bingo, shut-box, and enjoyed gab sessions enroute to Vegas. Needless to say, we all mostly slept on the way home Tuesday. Forty-one bowlers participated in singles and doubles for a prize fund exceeding $1,000 and Roberta McNaught was the big winnier. Every year there’s always one super star that cashes big time and although Roberta has always managed a prize or two, she never has hit top spot for a big payoff. Well, she did this time with 662 and shared the spotlight with Mary DeFord, (also long overdue) leading the first two spots in the 16-place prize fund payoff. Low to cash was 1264 in Doubles and 610 was low to cash in the 16 place singles prize fund. There were many ties in singles and doubles and we commend our Vegas Sweeps WEBER continued from page 1 kind of bad about going past him, but not really.” Weber advanced to the title match with a 233-212 victory over Brad Angelo of Lockport, N.Y., in the semifinal match. Angelo eliminated defending Marathon Open champion Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, in the opening game, 207-192, and Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, 256-227, in the second game before losing to Weber. The championship round was conducted on the Dick Weber lane condition, one of seven used during the tournament. Scroggins, as top qualifier, selected that pattern for the TV finals. “It was Mike’s choice, but winning on the pattern named in honor of my father makes it even more special,” Weber said. The Lumber Liquidators Marathon Open concluded the PBA Tour’s 2009-10 regular season. Champions from the Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark Championships conducted in Detroit last August will compete in a special PBA Experience Showdown presented by BOWL.COM while top finishers from six PBA Women’s Series events will compete in the PBA Women’s Series Showdown presented by BOWL.COM next week at the International Bowling Campus in Arlington, Texas. The PBA Experience Showdown will air on ESPN on Sunday, April 11, at 1 p.m. Eastern and the Women’s Series Showdown will air on Sunday, April 18, also at 1 p.m. Eastern. Following the Arlington special events, 20 top PBA players based upon 2008-09 points will travel to Tokyo April 22-25 to compete in the 25th anniversary DYDO Japan Cup. Patrick Allen of Wesley Chapel, Fla., is defending champion. Everybody appeared to have a great time again this year, and 92 year old Pat Willmore said, “sign me up for next year”. Several hands were raised when we asked how many were gambling winners. But the one who gets the door prize has to be Nan McGill who rates that honor every year and she really hit ‘em big time this trip on tables and slots. My personal thanks to league members, and our Vegas guests, for making 2010 another memorable year and we are looking forward to 2010-2011. He stepped up and won his fourth ABTA Title downing upstart Holden Au in the title game to take a nice $1,950 to the bank! In our return to West Covina, a great turnout of 281 entrants saw cut scores of men +39 and the ladies made it at +15. Super Seniors added to the board were Rico Cayton, Javier Avila and Roberta Nakunz. Due to the turnout, a whopping 69 bowlers made the semifinals all cashing in. They took the floor and we saw David Godinez lead the way at +183 to sit out and bowl for the title. Right behind was ABTA regular Ariel O’Campo at +111 who would receive a first round bye in the single elims and enter in the second round. It took a +49 for the men and +8 for the 3 guaranteed ladies to make the top 16 single elim finals. In round One, losers were Sonia Coronado, Tomas Licauco, Fred Go, Glen Matsumoto, Sol Cericos, Jimmy Wong and Tony Tang. They cashed checks of $120 in 1016th places. In round two we had William Garrett, Bryan Moore, Youna Yun, and Pablo Castro fallout. They were 6-9th places and $130 each. Round three got exciting and saw Holden Au out strike (562) 868-7164 Julie Nguyen 250-229.Greg Velarde edged Ariel O’Campo 200-198. Julie and Ariel were 4th and 5th $140 with fine bowling and Greg and Holden to meet for the right to bowl Godinez for the title. This game was so close. Holden held on in a nail biter in a 224-222 win. Greg was third and $210 with Holden off to a title showdown vs David Godinez. The title game is on and Holden led off. This was close as both bowlers were having a few problems as the pair seemed tough. Holden, not sure if he was tired, seemed to have lost his magic in the title game. He in fact, was in the game until David tossed a big double in frames 7-8. Holden couldn’t answer that, and the title went to the gentleman from Redondo Beach David Godinez 182/200-138/184. Great bowling by a very nice man. A title well deserved! David is nice and respectful to all. Congrats! Nice bowling by Holden Au, also one of the Good Guys, in the runner up position. He really did well, came through in exciting fashion until the end. He is a great guy! Always fun to be around Mr. Au!!:- )) He almost won his first title. Nice bowling by past champion, Greg Velarde who really bowled well at West Covina. He could have won this one! Tourney Hi Qualifiers were Alex Mao +209 (men)Faye Josefat led the ladies +77, and they get paid entries. The doubles were topped by Mao and Tim Tran at 1446 good for $190. Holden Au and Jimmy Wong 1371 $170, Faye Josefat and Glen Matsumoto 1356 $160. We paid a super 27 places and $2310 in the $5.00 doubles! The Match Game WAS UNmatched at 226 and was worth $3,500 and will be $3,500 at least four more tournaments with the carryover cash. Match Game is again $3,500 Saturday at Cerritos Lanes. The Match Series worth $1,876 also was UNMatched at 602, and with the carryover of $1,876. We will estimate the pot at $2,300 Saturday. The 3-6-9 Roll-off of $1,200 carried over as William Garrett eliminated the field and then missed on shot #1. We go for $1,300 Saturday at Cerritos. William got $50 for beer money! It’s not as crowded, has a nice environment and good lane conditions.” The tournament kicked off March 27, and bowlers will continue making the trip to El Paso until the 100-day event wraps up on July 4. Nearly 6,000 teams (30,000 bowlers) are expected to compete this year. Presenting sponsors for the 2010 USBC Women’s Championships are Nationwide Insurance; Kegel, official lane maintenance provider; US Steltronic, official scoring system; Brunswick; Storm Bowling Products Inc.; and the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau. P.O.Y. continued from page 1 major, that I could be in contention at the end.” During the 2009-10 season Williams won two titles - the Motor City Open and the United States Bowling Congress Masters for his eighth major to improve his all-time career titles record to 47. He had five championship round appearances and his titles in 200910 extended his record run of consecutive seasons with at least one title to 17. As it turned out Scroggins almost achieved the biggest upset of his career, advancing to the ESPN final as the top qualifier which put him into a tie with Williams and O’Neill in Player of the Year points. Because Williams barely missed the TV final, winning the Marathon Open would have given Scroggins his first Player of the Year title. But Scroggins, who played a decisive role in last season’s Player of the Year race with his win in the U.S. Open, suffered the same fate himself this time when Weber denied him the honor handing the crown to Williams. The tie between the three players was broken by virtue of Williams having earned his eighth Harry Smith Point Leader Award, also a record. In the overall competition points race for the season, Williams held a comfortable lead over O’Neill and Scroggins. California WBA “Firsts” USBC Honors Tina Martin Tina Martin of Novato named recipient of the USBC Joyce Deitch Trailblazer Award to be presented May 1, at the USBC convention in Reno, Nevada. Tina has a solid record of dedication to bowling and as attested by many “getting the job done.” A charter member of the California Bowling Writers Association, she currently serves as Treasurer but that’s just one of the many leadership positions she has held since she began bowling in 1967. The ultimate volunteer, Tina has served bowling as a delegate – state and national; state committees; youth programs; Marin County WBA President and is now a board member. She writes, edits and distributes the Country Club Bowl News newsletter eight times a year and twice a year it is mailed to all bowlers from a database she maintains. Tina has been secretary of leagues for over 30 years and is proud of having perfect attendance in her league for 17 years and as a matter of fact she has missed only twice in 24 years in her other league! She modestly calls her one claim to fame winning the “C” Division in the state BVL tournament in 2000. Tina bowls in the Inter-Association and North Bay Travel Leagues, which gives her the opportunity to keep her hand in and promote coming events to a wide range of bowling leaders. She is a certified bowling coach through YABA, California WBA, and USA Bowling Level II. She has corralled thousands of bowlers to tournaments of all kinds supporting state, national and youth competition. She says she enjoys working with kids. She admits to growing up as a “Summer River Rat” in Guerneville where her family had a place on the river and where she met her husband Jim. First date? Bowling. She married Jim in 1964 and they have two sons – Jeff and Bob. Jim is now retired from the elevator business. She is currently employed by Country Club Bowl in San Rafael as their League & Events Coordinator and helps with Marketing & Promotions. If we bottled all the energy it took to do all of the things Tina Martin has done we could go to the moon. Tina believes in keeping a positive attitude and working as a team where she says there is no “I”. Mary Lynly – CBW Publicity “It was a season where a lot of guys had very good years but no one really dominated, which probably played in my favor,” Williams added. “I just had a little better year. I would have liked to have won it by making the finals (of the Marathon Open), but there were five other guys who had a better tournament than me.” Williams, who began his full-time Tour career in 1983 and has competed in 723 Tour events, earned his Player of the Year crowns over a 24year span. His previous Player of the Year honors came in the 1986, ’93, ’96, ’97, ’98 and 2002-03 seasons. Even with all he has accomplished, Williams lists a Tournament of Champions victory and a 300 game on television as two goals he would still like to accomplish. Next season’s Tournament of Champions will feature a record $1 mil- lion prize fund and $250,000 first prize. “As long as I’m still competitive and feel good I’ll keep going,” Williams said. “I’m really looking forward to next year’s Tournament of Champions - that will be so big.” Williams’ plans for the near future include competing in his 25th Japan Cup April 22-25 (he is the only player who has competed in every Japan Cup in its modern configuration) and making his Senior Tour debut sometime this season. “I plan to bowl Senior Tour events this season but it’s a pretty busy schedule the next few months with some possible schedule conflicts with Teams USA and other events, so I’m not quite sure how many I’ll be able to bowl,” Williams said. “I hope to be able to bowl at least three, but I’ll have to see how the schedule works out.” • • These firsts will bring back a lot of memories. And glad they don’t have to play them again next week! “THREADWORKS” and “KATIE JAKES” will meet for the umpteen time this season. Either “BRYLAW” (20) and ‘HERZOG INSURANCE” (20) sitting in 3rd and 4th, could easily jump into first next week. This round has really been tight and the lead has changed weekly. The scores bowled next week — April 12 — will complete the averages going into the book for this year. YEAH! Fellows, make sure your names are spelled correctly and your sanction card is up to date. Each bowler bowled 5 games of qualifying and after 15 games per team the team of Bobby Hornacek, Andrew Stewart and Mason Sherman led the field at +334 followed closely by Brett Huntoon, DeeRonn Booker and Charlie Hair at +264 and Lawrence Merriweather, Jeremy Glover and Will Jackson at +261. Low-to-qualify was Dara Ajimine, Jerome Jordan and Cory Koyanagi at +37. The bowlers then took the lanes for 6 games of 3-man Baker with the top-4 teams advancing to the Baker stepladder rolloffs. In the first match, 4th-seeded Kaitlin Mayall, Nicole Shepard and Brandon Kraye fell to 3rd-seeded Justin Villa, Pat Smith, Devin Bidwell 194-184. Villa-SmithBidwell advanced to meet 2nd-seeded Wesley Low Jr, James Hefley and Matt Jones. Both teams were bowling great but in the end Villa-Smith-Bidwell squeaked by with a 215-209 win. They then advanced to the Championship Match against top-seeded DeeRonn Booker, Brett Huntoon and Charlie Hair. It was a back and forth match but some late open frames made it close and anchorman Devin Bidwell struck out to tie the match at 181. The match went to a 8th-9th-10th frame rolloff but a handful of big-4 by Pat Smith in the 9th frame of the rolloff was too much to overcome and Brett Huntoon, DeeRonn Booker and Charlie Hair took home the title. Congratulations! JAT Member/Adult Doubles This Sunday 410 and Under Handicap and 411+ Scratch Our second JAT Member/Adult Doubles will be this Sunday, April 11th at Canoga Park Bowl. Note: There are two divisions410 and under handicap and 411 and over scratch. Cost for the tournament is $80 per team ($40 per bowler). Please come early to check-in- it is always a crowded tournament! Check-in will open at 8:15 and practice starts at 9:00. See you all on the lanes at Canoga! Sometimes it’s fun to share dumb things you did years ago. I laughed out loud when I recalled this story and I hope you will also. I think it is more fun to laugh at yourself than at others but it’s Ok if you laugh with me. At the time of this happening, I was married and had three little toddlers. My husband and I both loved bowling; I’m using the word love here because I mean it literally. We were a young couple just getting started in life and our income was limited. So, many times we bowled in separate leagues so we could alternate baby-sitting. We also shared one car, at the time. One night I went to bowl in the 9pm ladies scratch league at Eagle Rock Lanes in Eagle Rock. I bowled as usual, probably not too good or not too bad, since I don’t remember.” I just remember that after the league, a group of us gals went into the coffee shop, had our coffee, and shared the events of the night. I vaguely recall a woman who left early asking me if I needed a ride home and I said “no thanks.” Well, after a lingering session of bragging, complain- ing and gossiping we said our good nights and I started wandering out to the parking lot while reaching in my purse and feeling around for my car keys. The parking lot was almost empty at that time of the night so finding my car should have been a “no brainier.” As I continued to search for my keys I recognized that my car was nowhere to be seen. Panic set in. I couldn’t find my keys and my car was gone. OMG! I must have left the keys in the car and someone stole it. I continued to look on all sides of the almost empty parking lot. No car…no keys. I remember how fear gripped my heart. How would I get home and how would my husband get to work tomorrow? Then I suffered another panic attack when I remembered that my husband’s bowling ball was in the trunk. Oh lord, I thought, my husband will kill me; my carelessness has caused the loss of our only car and my husband’s bowling ball. This was a fate worse than death. I was in tears when I went back in the bowling center. I went to the deskman and asked him to call the police so I could be enjoying themselves when I was in such a crises. My tears stopped and I’m sure my face went from “poor pitiful me” to “ a demon from hell.” I stared at the two heartless men, with sheer resentment in my heart, as they walked toward me. “We found your car,” the tallest one said. Then they both tried to stifle another bit of laughter. “OMG” I yelled, as I grabbed one then the other and rewarded them with “Hero’s hugs.” They were both kind enough to accept the hugs before the told me my car was at home. I hadn’t driven it that night; a friend had given me a ride to the center. The season is winding down- only three events left until the year-end special events! For updated information, stats and schedules log on to www.bowljat.org . See you all on Sunday! report my stolen car. When the cops arrived, I was still gushing with tears even though many bowlers tried to assure me that the police would find my car. I told the police how my car had been stolen and went through a series of questions describing the car. I even described my husband’s bowling ball and bag, although I didn’t see them writing that down. When they asked for the year, model and licenses plate number of my car I didn’t know the answers so I gave them my home phone number so they could call my husband for that kind of “technical” information. One of the officers (the tallest one) walked out of my sight to call my husband and the other stayed by my side and offered me some comfort and assurance that the car would be found. Soon I saw the tall officer motion to the other one to come where he was. I watched and waited to hear of any second hand comments that my husband had to say, but all I really noticed was that the two cops started laughing hysterically. I was just livid that they could TEAM EVENT: 10:00 A.M. (4 members per team any combination NO CAp) DOUBLES: 12:30 p.M. (2 Divisions Men and Mix) SINGLES: 2:30 p.M.
