WOMEN’S PRO BOWLING TO BE HONORED
AT ARLINGTON’S BOWLING MUSEUM
AND HALL OF FAME
“50 years of Women’s Professional Bowling” Exhibit to Open
in 2011 During Bowl Expo and USBC Convention
ARLINGTON — The new
International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame (IBM/
HF) is proud to announce that
it will be adding a new exhibit
to the museum which pays
tribute to the history of women’s professional bowling. The
exhibit will be unveiled during
the International Bowl Expo
and USBC Convention, which
will be held, in Arlington, TX
during the last week in June
2011.
“We are so excited about
Bowl Expo, as well as the
USBC convention, coming to
Arlington, Texas. Those who
attend this first-ever-event
will get a first-hand look at the
IBM/HF, International Training and Research Center, as
well as the offices of the International Bowling Campus,”
stated IBM/HF chairman Pat
Ciniello. He went on to add,
“The new exhibit will display
rare photographs and artifacts
– from those who made professional women’s bowling
a reality, to the great women
bowlers who competed on
tour.”
A committee has been
formed to develop the contents
of the exhibit, as well as to
raise funds in order to build it.
Jim Goodwin, President of the
Bowling News Network and
publisher of Stars & Strikes
Bowling Newsmagazine has
been named chairman. Goodwin worked with the Ladies
Pro Bowlers Tour and the
Professional Women’s Bowling Association for 20 years.

EBONITE SINGLES AT LA HABRA “300” BOWL

LA HABRA — A come
from behind win for his 16th
WCST Title, last week-end
at La Habra “300” for Eric
Forkel (Henderson, NV). In
a 6 man, 6 games finals, Eric,
started in 3rd place, behind
qualifying leader, Mark Dyer,
by 145 pins. Mark had bowled
2508 for the 10 games. Game
#3, was the turning point of
the finals for both Eric &
Mark, as the best match of
the day, between them, Eric,
299 & Mark, 289, then Eric
for the last 3 games rolled 798,
with a big 279 finish in the
position match against Marc’s
258 game, and won the tournament by 80 pins. Eric bowled
1590 for the 6 games, winning
5 matches, and Mark bowled
1455, winning only 2 matches. 300 Games bowled in the
qualifying, Mark Dyer & Robert Ellison. This again, a very
high scoring tournament. The
finalists averaged 240.3 for 36
games. La Habra’s Pro Shop

For Corey Husted, it was
his first PBA Northwest Regional title which makes him

in January. Dave Husted, a 14time PBA Tour champion and
three-time U.S. Open winner,
has now won 26 PBA regional
titles. They split a $2,500 first

the PBA South Region Jacksonville Open at NAS Freedom Lanes on Sunday. The
title was Baker’s first title of
the year and the 22nd of his
regional career. He earned
$2,500 along with his title.

To Be Unveiled
at International
Bowling Campus
ARLINGTON — After
months of calibrations and
testing, the newest member of
the Equipment Specifications
and Certifications team at the
United States Bowling Congress is ready to be introduced
to the world on Oct. 19.
The new addition isn’t a
scientist, however, it’s a stateof-the-art ball-throwing robot
named E.A.R.L. (Enhanced
Automated Robotic Launcher),
which is designed to be able to
simulate any type of bowling
style with an accuracy and
consistency on the lanes that
no human bowler can achieve.
Those qualities make E.A.R.L.
invaluable in the many studies
necessary to keep up with the
ever-changing bowling ball
industry.
Local media and invited
guests will get the first look at
E.A.R.L., and as part of the unveiling, E.A.R.L. will go headto-head against Professional

Mission Hills Bowl will be hosting Karaoke on Saturday night also

Helen Duval, who passed
away July 29th, the California Board of Directors unanimously approved to rename
our 2011 tournament and those
henceforth to ”The California
USBC Helen Duval Veterans
Tournament”.
Helen was a lifetime resident of Berkeley, California, joining her first bowling
league in l939. She was a
natural and by the l950’s was
teaching at bowling clinics
and eventually was instrumental in bringing bowling to the
California youth. In 1959 she
was a founding member of the
women’s professional bowling
movement. By 1967 Helen
held a high average of 200 and
had captured titles from the
professional ranks and WIBC
tournaments.
Helen’s son Richard was
stricken with Polio at age 5
and hospitalized for over a
year. Helen taught Richard
to bowl, first from the wheelchair and then later to stand at
the foul line. Richard eventually became a 200 average
and joined the Professional
Bowlers Association Tour. By
working with Richard, Helen
had developed the tools to
teach any disabled individual
and volunteered to work with
the BVL, the nonprofit group
that provides programs to veteran and active duty service
men and women. For over 20
years she traveled across the
country, visiting veteran’s hospitals to teach the sport.
Helen was honored in hundreds of ways throughout her
career. To note just a few: Appointed and served 5 years on
President Kennedy’s Council
on Physical Fitness; In l985

co-chair and in 2000 she received the Secretary’s Award,
the highest award given by the
Department of Veterans Affairs
for her dedicated commitment
to America’s Veterans; Was
honored as a “bowling legend”
at the National Bowling Hall
of Fame and Museum’s Salute
to Champions Gala in 1993;
Received the BPAA V.A.
Wapensky Award; Selected
as BPAA’S Dick Weber Bowling 2007Ambassador Award;
in 1970 inducted into WIBC
(now USBC) Hall of Fame
for Superior Performance; in
1995 inducted into the Ladies
Professional Bowlers Hall of
Fame; in 1996 inducted into
the Senior Athletes Hall of
Fame; and posthumously in
2011… “The California USBC
Helen Duval Veterans Tournament”

may have left us but will never
be forgotten.

and USBC Halls of Fame.

Tour Director and Historian
Fran Deken will be an invaluable member of the team in
recording the history and making sure all the right people are
honored. Former PWBA owner and museum trustee John
Sommer, who operated and
financed the LPBT and PWBA
for 22 years from 1981-2003,
will contribute his time, effort,
and expertise to the project.
Deken and Sommer are also
members of the PWBA and
USBC Halls of Fame.
50 Years of Women’s
Pro Bowling will occupy a
prominent place within the
new museum, and become
a permanent part of bowling’s incredible history for all
visitors to explore year round.
The IBM/HF occupies 18,000
square feet of the International
Bowling Campus, which is
also the home for the United
States Bowling Congress, the
Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America, the International Training and Research
Center, and many more related
organizations that make up
bowling’s headquarters.

RESULTS OF 14TH ANNUAL DEAF SENIOR BOWLERS OF AMERICA TOURNAMENT

LAS VEGAS—The 14th annual Deaf Senior Bowlers of America Tournament drew smaller
entries for the 2nd straight year last October 12-14 at The Orleans Hotel Bowling Center due to
slow economy. Nevertheless, 124 deaf and hearing impaired seniors aged 55 to 87 from all over US
and Canada came to enjoy meeting old and new friends and tried their luck in the bowling events
and in the casino.
Three new records were made and some scores came close to breaking standing records. These
seniors were good as there were a couple of 279’s a 268, a 265 and eight 250 plus. There were also
three 700 series during the tournament. Read on.
84 YEARS OLD JACK SICKINGER SNAGS HANDICAP SINGLES TITLE WITH 763
Three long time senior bowlers averaging below 155 took first three places in the men’s Singles
event with 84 years old Jack Sickinger, Riverside placing in first with 763 total with handicap to
snag the $800 prize. Sickinger entered with 151 book average, rolled way over his average games of
207-189-190 for 586 plus 177 handicap missing the record by 4 pins. There were 80 men entries.
Placing 2nd for $400 was 141 average John Furman, CA with 740 from 182-172-179/533 plus
207 handicap. Third place $200 went to 154 average David Stratton, CA with 733 from 182-167216/565 plus 168 handicap. The next two places were taken by 200 average senior bowlers, Tom
Parker, Columbus, Ohio with 724 and Bobby Fuller, Maryland with 722. Parker recently last month
bowled his second 300, 22 years after his first one in California, had games of 254-203-258 for
event high scratch 715 plus 9 handicap. Fuller who is the first black deaf bowler with an 800 series,
had games of 203-224-268(the event high game)/695 plus 27 handicap.
This event paid off to 20 places with 658 low for $20.00.

The women’s Singles event had only 24 women entered and 139 average Kathy Seymour, Whittier, CA came out with a new record 735 total to win the $240 prize.
Seymour rolled 196-159-167 for 522 plus 213 handicap to break the old record of 722. Joan McCowin, a 149 average Texan placed 2nd for $120 with her 166-192-181 for the event’s high scratch
series 539 plus 183 handicap for 722 total.
Third place $100 prize went to 126 average Fidelia Solorio, CA with 452 plus 252 handicap for
704 total. Due to small entry the prizes stop at 6th place 681 score $60.
The DSBA Secretary-Treasurer since the beginning, Carol Moers, Denver had this event’s high
game 201 but her 538 series plus 132 handicap 670 total placed her 8th.
DUO OF DOROTHY ROSS/LEE MOORE TAKES MIXED DOUBLES WITH RECORD 1497
The Mixed Doubles event drew 61 entries and Californian duo of Dorothy Ross and Lee Moore,
Jr. went over their averages to break the old record of 1413 with a big 1497 for the first place prize
of $1040. Ross, 133 average bowler who won this event back in 2000 with a different partner, had
190-177-122/489 plus 231 handicap for 720 and Moore, Jr. 150 average added 216-181-200/597
plus 180 handicap for their grand 1497 total.
Second place $520 prize went to Maryland duo of Norman Ingram and Bobby Fuller with 1449
total which also broke the old record. Ingram with 152 average shot 177-197-147/521 plus 174 for
695 while Fuller with 201 average added 245-224-258 for tournament high 727 series and event’s
high 1248 scratch doubles total plus his 27 handicap.
Matched pair of New England’s Ted Thomas and Illinois’ John Damrow scored 1408 total for
3rd place $300. Thomas hits 201-193-238 for 632 and Damrow added 205-201-178 for 584 for
1226 total plus their 192 handicap for the 1408 total. The last place to cash was 13th $50 taken by
the Canadian wife/husband duo of Sharon and William Kalk’s 1344.
WOMEN’S MATCH PLAYS: KALK TOPS QUALIFYING BUT SEYMOUR WINS MATCH PLAY
Only 16 senior women entered in the women’s Match Play 4 games qualifying round and Canadian Sharon Kalk led the round with 194-147-205-236 for 782, 8 pins short of the scratch record.
With her handicap of 208, Kalk had 990 total. Texan Joan McCowin placed 2nd with (224-204)
727 plus 244 handicap 972 and Kathy Seymour, Whittier in 3rd with 630 plus 284 handicap 914.
The low to make the top 8 for the next day’s one game Match Play was 894 by Christel Devos,
Canada.
In the one game Match Plays (this writer did not have the scores of earlier rounds), as Devos
and McCowin were eliminated in the 3rd round and Kalk, a former winner in 2004, lost 187 to 232
to Seymour. In the semi-finals Kalk eliminated the 7th qualifier Younisi Donegan, Hawaii 246-211
to get in the finals against Seymour.
In the championship finals, Seymour who was the runner up in the 2007 event and seeking her
first title, denied Kalk her 2nd title by winning 231 to Kalk’s 221.
Donegan got $75 for 3rd place, Kalk received $100 and Seymour $180 for her first National
Senior title to go with the Pacific Coast Deaf Senior Queens title won last May.
MEN’S MATCH PLAY: BERGAN TOPS QUALIFYING BUT GORMAN LOW WINS MATCH PLAY
The men’s Match Play 4 games Qualifying Round had 59 entries and Bob Bergan, Whittier led
with 966 from games of 193-191-226-216/826 plus 140 handicap. Gerald Kelly, Phoenix placed
2nd with 955 from (220)651 plus 304 handicap and the Singles event winner Jack Sickinger, Riverside 3rd with 954 from (212) 718 plus 236 handicap.
The 4th place qualifier with 950 was Jose Sermeno, AZ who rolled the event’s high scratch
4 games series 910 with 203- 279 (event’s high game) -221-207 plus 40 handicap. The eventual
winner Gorman Low, Huntington Beach qualified 8th with 937 from 222-190-200-217/829 plus
108 handicap. The oldest entrant, Connie Marchione, CA placed 10th with 907 with 723 plus 184
handicap.
The 32nd and last place score for cut-off for the next day’s one game Match Plays was 851
by Robert Backofen, Conn. with 703 plus 148 handicap. Tom Parker, OH had 279 2nd game to tie
Sermeno for the high game honors but his 844 total placed him in 35th.
In the one game Match Play (again this writer did not have the scores of earlier rounds) top
qualifier Bergan was eliminated in the 3rd round. Low and Backofen had won all their 4 rounds
matches and met in the 5th round in which Low gave Backofen his first loss 214-204, putting Low
in Championship finals. In same round in loser’s bracket Marchione eliminated 2nd qualifier Kelly
202-195 and in next round faced Sermeno in a classic duel in which both started with first 5 strikes.
At the end Marchione prevailed in eliminating Sermeno 240-227. Next Marchione met Sickinger
in the battle of octogenarians and older Marchione again prevailed in eliminating Sickinger 195 to
160. In the semi-finals Marchione met the waiting Backofen and got himself eliminated by Backofen 201-150. Marchione finished in 3rd place for $170.
Backofen moved into Championship finals against the waiting Low and Low eliminated Backofen 232 70 193 for the $620 1st place Prize. Backofen got $325. Although there were only 60
entrants all 32 qualifiers cashed with last place getting $25.
JAMES WHITE ELECTED 3RD DSBA PRESIDENT, KATHY SEYMOUIR NEW DIRECTOR
In the general meeting of Deaf Senior Bowlers of America at Orleans Bowling Center the members elected James White, Texas as the 3rd president in DSBA’s 14 years. White a long time DSBA
Director resigned his position in order to replace outgoing Pres. William Heacock who finished his
limit of 2 terms of three years. Also elected was Kathy Seymour, CA to White’s vacant Director
position for remaining two years. Other Directors Edward Abakumoff, CA and Joe Ed Thompson,
TX remain for another year. As is Vice President Renwick Dayton for another year and SecretaryTreasurer Carl Moers, CO two years.
In other action, the member voted to lower the eligibility age of women bowlers from 55 to 60
in order to get more women to enter. The men’s entry age remains at 55. The dates for next year’s
tournament at The Orleans Hotel are October 11, 12, 13, 2011.

WEST COVINA—In our return to West Covina Lanes we had
a decent turnout of 172 bowlers.
Cut scores were high this week,
with a +102 for the men and +66
for the women. This week our
three Super Seniors added to the
board were Lonzell Burnett (+98)
and Walter White (+86) for the
men and Imelda Ahorro (+31) for
the women. That would give us a
total of 43 bowlers making it to the
semi-finals this week.
This week during our 1st game
in the 4 pm squad we had a 300
game rolled by Albert Fernandez.
For all qualifying squads our top
qualifier for the Men was Vuong
Do with a +176, and for the women it was Margie Coronado with a
+139. Each will get paid entries
into a future regular ABTA event.
Vuong, being the top seed drew
the Match Series this week worth
$302 and drew a 464. We had one
winner, and he was Vic Garcia.
Next week at Linbrook Bowl,
the estimated Match Series will be
$250. For the 3-6-9 qualifying this
week, Gino Mansilungan was the
final person left after the roll-off,
to go for the $1600. He missed on
his first shot and received a $50
consolation. We will add another
$100 at Linbrook Bowl for total
of $1700.
In the doubles this week we
had 117 groups get into the doubles, with 18 spots being paid out.
The top prize this week went to
Vuong Do and Danny Guevarra
with a 1510 for $140. In 2nd
place it was Vuong Do and George
Parker with a 1494 for $120. The
low to cash was 1410, we paid out
$1170 in doubles.
In the semis this week we saw
Pete Dumpit lead the field with a
+168 to sit out and bowl for the
title. Behind Pete Dumpit was
Mikko Miller at +131 who would
sit out the first round. It took a
+44 for the men and women combined, as we would take 3 women
to make the finals this week.
This week, our top seed in
semi-finals had the honor of drawing the match game worth $1995
(562) 868-7164
and drew 244. After a review of
all the scores bowled, only 1 individual had that score and it was
Ariel Ocampo. He would take
home the $1,995 dollars. Next
week at Linbrook Bowl we will
estimate the pot at $1,100. This
week we had 4 new bowlers join
us, and no returning members.
Let’s welcome these new bowlers to the club, Nickson Cayetano,
Nancy Tran, Hung Nguyen and
Richard Luu.
This would bring us to our
Match Play finals now with 13
bowlers taking the floor in our top
16 finals this week. We had a family emergency occur for 1 of the
final 16 bowlers and thus 1 lucky
individual would gain a bye into
the 2nd round. In the 1st round the
7 losers were Vuong Do, Lonzell
Burnett, Carlos Vejar, Mark Andrews, Eldie Abutan, Koo Hwang,
David Godinez and they would
receive checks of $100 each. In
the second round, the losers were
Mikko Miller, Holden Au, Catherine Cheung, Tiffany Paulson and
each would get checks of $107.50.
This would get us to down to the
final 4 bowlers. At this point, our
horses would be paying anywhere
from a low of $49 (Gina Velarde)
to a high of $127 (Sam Reyes) depending on who would win.
In this round we saw Gina
Velarde (16th seed) bowling Sam
Reyes (11th seed) on lanes 11 and
12. In this match, it went down
to the 10th frame, with Gina needing to mark in the 10th to win the
match. She would leave a 10 pin
and then just barely missed it,
sending Sam on to the next round
with a 210-202 finish.
In the
other match we saw George Parker (12th seed) bowling Mamerto
Jablan (8th seed) on lanes 3 and
4. In this match, George would
get the better of Mamerto with a
216 to 178 final score. Gina and
Mamerto finished in 4th and 5th
getting checks for $115 each. Our
semi-final match was set to be
bowled on 5 and 6; we had our
11th and 12th seeds into the top
16 bowling each other. In our
horses this week we would see
Sam paying $127 and George paying $59 if they win their match.
In this match it started out close,
and continues that way for a while
until George pulled away at the
end. George would go on to win
the match 211 to 182. Sam would
finish in 3rd place for $200. This
week the horse paid out $59 for all
of you that bet on George making
all the way to the title match.
The title game is set and would
be bowled on lanes 9 and 10 this
week. Pete being the top seed
elected to have George begin the
match first. This match was close
early on as it stayed neck and
neck. But in the 7th frame George
would have an open. And when he
came up in the 8th he threw a decent shot but left the 8-10 and thus
opening up the door for Pete. That
was enough for Pete to hold
on with a Mark in the 10th
frame and go on to win it with a
188/207 to 174/197. This would
get the monkey off Pete’s back for
his 1st ABTA title as he has been
a member for many years. Pete
would get $1,000 for first place,
an additional $850 in the cash and
carry, making his total $1,850.
George would take home $500 for
his 2nd place finish.

from El Monte and used a Roto
Grip drilled by Aarik Torres at
Covina Bowl. He is married to a
very pretty lady, Imelda who was
on hand for the win. He would
like to thank his wife for all her
support with his bowling and all
the friends in ABTA for their encouragement.

from Lakewood and used a Ebonite Big One drilled by Billy Myers, Jr. George is single, but has a
girlfriend Nina. He would like to

only a couple of weeks to go in the round. Paul Varela really wanted to win those first two games,
putting up 299-279/770 to lead his Team 3 to four wins. Leonard Ruiz 244-236/666 and Ramon
Torres 210-255/656 also pitched in. Jeff Garrison 236-247-248/731, Greg Neuer 223-235-223/681
and Sam Hitchcock 228-214/628 bowled well and pulled out a third game win to avoid the sweep.

a couple of ailing weeks and
could not finish her games on
Monday. We are glad to report
she is recovering and hopes to
continue bowling next week.
Roberta and Karen were
both absent Monday but thanks
to visitor Mary Meglemre, we
still had the popular 50/50.
She was drafted to do the job
and she did great, setting a
new high collection, thus far
this season, of $94.
Roberta will still be on vacation next week, missing our
first Position Round, but super
sub Donna Johnson will be
on deck for her and hopefully
Karen won’t be called in to
work. We sure appreciate our
subs and gave them a round of
applause Monday. Also, it was
good to see Phyllis Baldwin
back for her first sub duty this
season.
We don’t have all the team
compiled for Position next
Monday, but they will be
posted on the schedule desk
prior to bowling. We can list
the stair-step standings for the
first six teams, since there are

Laurel, Md., on Oct. 17 by 21
pins over Soul Moorer of Dover, Del. Baker averaged 235
and won six of his 12 matches
to finish with a 20-game total
of 4,841 pins, including match
play bonus pins, to claim a
$1,500 first prize.
Baker, who had led the
entire event, entered the position round with a 135-pin lead
over Moorer, but a pair of 7-10
splits by the four-time PBA
Senior Tour Player of the Year
and a 277 final game by Moorer forced Baker to mark in the
10th frame for the win.
The two-month chase for
PBA Playoffs qualifying positions in six regional areas
will continue Nov. 5-7 with
a PBA South Region tournament at Village Lanes in
Gloucester, Va.; a joint Southwest/West Region event at
Bowlero Lanes in Farmington,
N.M., and a Northwest Region
event at Bowl Arena Lanes in
Fort Lewis, Wash. Qualifying tournaments in the PBA
East, South, Central, Midwest,
Southwest and combined
West/Northwest Regions will
continue through Nov. 30.

MORENO VALLEY - It’s
all about GUYS and DOLLS.
It’s a weekly BATTLE OF
THE SEXES at MORENO
VALLEY BOWL, as Amanda
Milburn leads a trio of ladies in
the Wednesday Scratch Challenge League against fifteen
other teams, predominantly
made up of guys. Amanda’s
teammates are KATHY ALLEN and DENISE BLACKMON.
Most scratch leagues have
women competitors, but a full
team of ladies competing in
an open scratch league is rare.
This fact didn’t scare off these
ladies. With league averages
of 225 (Milburn), 222 (Allen), and 212 (Blackmon) why
should these dolls be afraid
of any guys. These fearless
ladies are currently in second
place, standing atop fourteen
other teams of guys!
The Scratch Challenge
League has a four game format, each team bowling a two
game set on one pair of lanes
against a team, and then moving to another pair of lanes to
bowl another two game series
against another team. The
league has awards for high
game and high series. The difference in this league is that
the high series award will go
to the bowler rolling the highest two game set.
To date our dolls have
highs of 278 (game) and 556
(two games) bowled by Milburn. Kathy Allen’s highs are
259 and 518, while Denise
Blackmon has bowled highs
of 267 and 506.
The guy with the high
league average is JOE DUBE
at 238. Joe’s highs are 279 and
537.

his predecessor, Harry, a lessautomated robot introduced in
1999 and recently retired.
USBC’s newcomer was
named by USBC Junior Gold
youth bowler Melissa Stewart
of Roswell, Ga. She figured if
bowling great Earl Anthony’s
nickname was “The Machine,”
then it was only “fitting to
name the new ball-throwing
robot for a bowler with ma-
chine-like characteristics.”
“We are excited to finally
show off E.A.R.L. and give
people their first look at the future of bowling research,” said
Neil Stremmel, USBC Managing Director-National Governing Body. “E.A.R.L. will play
a huge role in the testing we do
here to maintain the standards
of the game, and we’re excited
about the possibilities.”
A joint venture between
USBC and the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America, the ITRC is the most innovative and advanced training,
research and testing facility in
the sport of bowling. The center includes 14 lanes for training and six for research and
testing purposes.

In the Thursday Linbrook Juniors, Andrew Stewart led the day with 639
on games of 180-211-248. Morgan Gober bowled her new season high
series. Chris Woodmansee crushed 183-222/567, Morgan, who has a 135
average, strolled to 194-186-153/533. Jonah Lopez downed 154 and Tiffani Agustin topped 172.
In the Junior-Adult Scratch Doubles, Josh Cruz cruised to a great set
of bowling with 220-224-201 for a super 645 series. Deanna Gomez put
together her high game of the league with a terrific 221 game. Thomas
Iriye tallied 209 and sub, Nicole Abbott nailed 203-204.
In the Bumper Busters, Jozlynn Johnson jumped to 106-78, Izel Cruz
crumbled 99-82, Shai Gardner scored 95-74, Amber Sanderson aced 88-76
and Khamron Gardner grabbed 78-87. Thank you to Coach Kim Gardner

In the Saturday Linbrook Juniors, Chris Gushue, 214 average, crushed

ANAHEIM—Newlywed Drew Parkin, and his lovely wife
Missy, returned last week from their honeymoon. Drew may
have lost his single status but he sure didn’t lose his bowling
skills. His 913 series led the 590 Classic on games of 234, 267,
205, and 207.
Shawn St.Andre rolled the league’s second perfecto of the
season. Way to go Shawn.
