PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT
Looking back at the last year after coming
back into the chair, I can only think of
what a busy year it has been, carrying
on the work of the previous Council and
working along with the Waikato Club
to put together a package to make the
DTL Worlds one of the best. There will
be certainly a lot to talk about on the
end result next year. The postal entries
and automatic squadding will be closely
scrutinised but by all accounts it is looking
promising and should be seriously looked
at by Council and possibly made to be a
permanent fixture for future Nationals
and maybe Island tournaments.
Part of the build-up to the Nationals
and Worlds is the work done by Barry
Williamson for the sponsorship. This
has to be done well before the event and
has been a massive undertaking but has
been done totally professionally. Barry
has been a fantastic part of the team and
has worked tirelessly for the sake of all
the shooters. He has a great rapport with
the sponsors and his backup support is
exceptional. Overall sponsorship through
the Association for the shooters ended
up with substantial sponsorship for the
year. This is right across the board with
Secondary School, Scholarship, Nationals
and of course the Worlds which boosted
the total dramatically. Barry, on behalf of
all the shooters, I thank you so much for all
the effort and support that you have given
to us all.
Membership grew again last year by 2.4%
or 64 members overall which is all positive.
All categories have increased other than
Ladies which decreased by 6% which is a
bit of a shame. Social membership remains
around the 200 mark and this is where
clubs need to try and encourage these
shooters into full time membership.
Our web site never ceases to amaze me
with its continued use. The visits again have
increased by 3.94% to 108,333 visitors with
the average visit duration of 243 seconds.
The web site can still be made better by
the use of information that is supplied by
the clubs. Our Executive Officer often gets
criticised for the lack of results and this is
mainly because of the lack of information
coming through to the National Office
from the clubs themselves.
Financially the Association is still very
sound. The extra levies from the Worlds
qualifying have certainly helped. In
2013 the NZCTA decreased its share of
levies paid at NZCTA championships
giving the host clubs a larger portion to
help their increased costs to ensure the
financial viability of the clubs who run
the tournaments for the Association. This
resulted in a decrease of $10,972 in income
to the Association. The current Council felt
that with prudent financial management
the Association could afford to reduce
our income to accommodate this share of
levies going to the clubs without having to
increase the entry fee to the individuals.
With the increased shooting due to
qualifying over the year, having a part of
the success, the challenge now is to keep
the momentum going. Well run shoots are,
and will still be well patronised and some
clubs need to raise the bar. I am not naive
enough to suggest that some clubs are not
trying; its just that to get volunteers to
help at the coal face is getting harder and
harder. It is generally the older members
that are doing the work, and the younger
brigade need to step up. Some of these
shooters have had a lot out of shooting
already with coaching, expenses etc and
need to put something back into the club
and people that have got them to where
they are today.
Looking forward to the future for
shooting where can we start? We have
tried to get coaching up and running. This
still needs to be addressed. Addressing
costs within shooting from the National
Office to the clubs and the big one that is
causing all sorts of logistical issues is the
new computer system that Council has
endorsed as a major to do project. This is
still a main priority within our organisation.
Overall I am extremely happy with
the achievements over the last year and
hopefully in the following year, 2014, we
as Council can focus more on the other
issues as the Worlds has certainly taken up
some time this year.
Once again, to my “Rock”, Adrienne,
thank you. Our long discussions over the
phone certainly make my job a lot easier.
Also to my council, it’s been a funny year
and it’s good to have these guys behind you
all the way. Tom Begg continues to work
tirelessly behind the scenes on Gunshot.
This position he has held for numerous
years and goes completely unnoticed but
not without our gratitude. Tom cannot
keep doing this job for ever and we will
eventually be in a position to look for an
understudy. On behalf of all the readers I
would like to thank Tom for everything he
does to ensure the high standard remains
of our flagship magazine.
To all our sponsors that have generously
supported this Association through to
the shooters, thank you so much for your
continued support, especially Martyn Coe
for the Beretta support going through to
the Worlds. All the others being NZ Fish
& Game Council, Geoff at Kilwell Sports,
Hugh Bradley from Stager Sports, Barry
& Jill Foster from Fosters Stihl Shop, Rick
Stephens Caesar Guerini, Filippo from
Perazzi, Brant from Australian Sporting
Arms, George Ellis and Graeme Webber,
the Dairy Farmers group and of course our
friends at Gunn Estate wines.
This year has certainly had its challenges
and it has been made so much easier with
the support from all areas. I thank all the
people around me and I would like to think
that everyone will appreciate the effort
by all those that have helped to get us to
where we want to be. I said when I came
back to the chair that I will not be here for
a long time and people need to take that
on board and support those that want to
take the next step. Once again thank you
to everyone that has shown their support
to me. I love the meet and greet part of
the game that we play and look forward to
catching up with many of you in the future.
Your President,
Trevor Manson•

Programs and have approached some software developers. Our
sport is very complex (administratively). We need to be careful
to ensure integration with all our requirements. Martin assured
the meeting that this was still a priority for council.
2. Ray Russell pointed out that the back drop does not have the
Dairy farmers name on it. This was noted.
3. Rob Andrews asked about the pre entry for the event and why
shooters were not shooting on the same handicap marks. It
was advised that the rules were changed 3 days ago and some
entries were taken up to 12 months ago and shooters marks have
changed, also some shooters did not advise their handicap when
entering. This shoot is operating under new rules which will
improve for future events.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
RE NATIONAL AND WORLD DTL CHAMPS
Dear Sir
It has just been my privilege to take part in the NZ National
championships and the World DTL event at the Waikato Clay
Target Club. I have been around the traps since 1962 and this
event would be by far the best I have ever had the pleasure to
be part of.
The organisation from the pre-paid entries to the extremely
well-run shoot, the mechanical perfection of the traps, and the
scoring and refereeing was a credit to Waikato, and even the
weather was kind during the World event.
It was great to see the international teams shooting from
Australia, the UK, South Africa, Ireland, Scotland and others
all decked out in their country’s colours – then there was the
New Zealand team – congratulations to them for winning the
world team event – but surely we could have dressed them in
a uniform manner. I believe we looked like the poor country
cousins, and I am sure a sponsor could be found to fund the New
Zealand open team in a suitable shooting vest – if not, surely the
Association could finance the vests at such a prestigious event.
Once again, congratulations to all concerned for a great 12 days
of shooting.

LETTER OF REPLY
RE NATIONAL AND WORLD DTL CHAMPS
Thank you for your generous comments on the World
Championships held at Waikato recently. I wholeheartedly agree
with most of your comments. I have also had very favourable
comments not only from New Zealand and overseas shooters
but also from ICTSF delegates from several countries.
The friendly atmosphere along with the trade alley made
these particular Worlds something special. Everyone who had
anything to do with it can be very proud of the end result.
As for the dress code I somewhat disagree with your comments
about the way the New Zealand teams were presented. The
NZCTA supplied 2 polo shirts to each team member to shoot
in. Years ago we supplied hats to everyone and hardly anyone
wore them because they like to feel comfortable in their own
gear while shooting and this includes the shooting vest. To
supply decent shooting vests could cost at least $150 to $200
each and multiply that by 42 team members soon adds up. The
NZCTA had already allocated approximately $20,000 for the
whole contingent of teams including the polo shirts and the rest
divided up among the team members. The association also paid
for the team entries over and above this. I take your point but at
some stage we have to draw the line. At the presentation all our
New Zealand winners were wearing their dress uniforms and all
looked very professional on the dais and in the photos.
I hope this goes some way to explaining how it works from our side.

11TH ICTSF WORLD DTL CHAMPIONSHIPS
WAIKATO CLAY TARGET CLUB
10-12 MARCH 2014
By Adrienne Sears
This is the 20th anniversary of the
International
Clay
Target
Shooting
Federation (ICTSF) Championships in
their current format. Beretta NZ were
the principal sponsor for the event. They
sponsored the shooters' packs which were
given to every competitor. These consisted
of a high quality bag, a branded stainless
steel drink bottle, a Beretta key ring, a
Beretta pen, the shooters' back patches and
lanyards, a NZTA badge, and some tourist
information. The club had made a brass
cartridge case engraved with the event which
will be a permanent keepsake of the event.
All official Referees were supplied with a hat
kindly supplied by Beretta. Beretta provided
a DT11 as the High Gun for the event. This
DT 11 will be a unique gun as one of Beretta’s
engravers in Italy has engraved a Silver Fern
on the trigger guard. The HOA winner will
also receive $5,500 in prize money. Beretta
had a large marquee on the grounds for the
duration of the Nationals and the Worlds
with a hospitality area and a large trade area
and staff on hand to help with any queries.
CCI Targets were the Associate Sponsor
for this event. They supplied the targets for
both the Nationals and the Worlds. Graeme
and Simon Brown had a trade site on the
grounds and were on hand to assist anyone
with any queries about their products.
To say there were some pretty good shots
present is a bit of an understatement; 4 World
High Overall winners (Bill Iles 1996, John
Wynn 1999, Colin Waghorn 2008, Darren
Nicholls 2010), 3 Ladies World Champions
(Wendy Barton 2002, Natalie Curtis 2004,
Natalie Rooney 2008 and 2012), 3 Junior
World Champions (Glenn Barton 2008, Jack
Collicoat 2010, Matthew Schillier 2012), and
2 World Veteran World Champions (Tim
Catling 2002, Paul Schmidt 2006).
The opening ceremony was held on
Saturday night. The Maori welcome was
something that was very well received by
everyone. The young people from Hamilton
Boys and Hamilton Girls High performed
to the shooters and their partners and this
gave the evening a distinctive Kiwi flavour.
Team Managers from Australia (Allan
Vilcins), England (John Bellamy), Ireland (Pat
Donaghy), Northern Ireland (Hugh Irvine),
South Africa (Rob Henderson), Wales
(David Ricketts) and our own manager Judy
Castles said a few words. The meet and greet
format went down well with everyone as it
gave a chance to mix and mingle and the
atmosphere was light and friendly. It wasn’t
a late night (for some) but a good time was
had by all.
Sunday the 9th our friends at Perazzi
sponsored a trophy match that was shot
under the same format as the Worlds to give
everyone a taste of what was to come. There
were magnificent trophies of CZ rifles put
up by Perazzi for not only the HOA title that
was won by Casey Fletcher (Australia) who
shot the only 299, but also the first grade
places. John Duryea (Australia) won the AA
grade rifle, Gino Mourin (French Polynesia)
won the A Grade with a 298, New Caledonia
shooter Walter Le Pironnec won B Grade
on 293 and fellow New Caledonian Stanisic
Christian won the C grade CZ rifle with his
283.
The 11th ICTSF DTL World Championships
got underway on a typical Waikato morning
on Monday 10th March. There was a light
hint of fog and the sun wasn’t quite right for
shooting so it was decided to hold back the
commencement until 9am to give everyone
the very best conditions. The format for this
event is that everyone shoots 100 targets in
the first day over 4 traps (banks) moving one
trap clockwise after each 25. Those starting
on trap 1 use traps 1-4, those starting on trap
16 go to trap 13 for their 2nd round. This
saves everyone having to walk the kilometre
from trap 16 to trap 1 and holding up the
proceedings. The next day the squad that
started on trap 1 starts at a different time on
trap 5 and rotates over traps 5 to 8. The final
tally up saw 599 shooters from 13 countries
shoot the event. After the day's shooting it
was Stuart Sutherland from New Zealand
who had shot the 300/300, followed by
Gavin Searle, Mitchell Iles (Junior), Darryn
Nicholl and Daryl Stevens all on 299. The
leading Veteran for the first day was Gary
Kelly (Australia) on 298 and the leading Lady
was our very own Anja van de Wetering on
294. In the teams event the first day saw the
New Zealand Open team leading on 1185, 10
points ahead of the next best, Australia on
1175. The New Zealand Ladies No 1 team was
ahead on 584 with the NZ No 2 team 2nd
on 579. It was the Australian Junior team
that was ahead after day 1 on 590, followed
equally by the England A team and the New
Zealand No 1 team on 584. The England A
Veterans team led after day 1 on 584 with the
Australian Veteran team 2nd on 582.
Tuesday was about the teams’ event and
the 2nd 100 of the individual event. There
were 11 Open teams from Australia, England
(2 teams), Ireland, New Caledonia, New
Zealand (3 teams), Northern Ireland, South
Africa and Wales. The Ladies teams event
had 7 teams; England, Ireland, New Zealand
(3 teams), Wales and Australia. There were
7 Junior teams from Australia, England,
New Zealand (3 teams), South Africa and
Wales. The Veterans category had 9 teams
from Australia, England (2 teams), Ireland,
New Zealand (3 teams), Northern Ireland
and Wales. The Open teams are five person
teams and the top four scores count. The
Ladies, Juniors and Veterans teams are three
person teams with the top two scores to
count. Countries have to be members of the
ICTSF to compete in the teams event but
their members can compete as individuals
as guests of the NZCTA. Again shooting was
delayed by half an hour to give the shooters
the best light conditions. The day was again,
fine and warm. The referees had to be kept
up with water as sitting out in the hot sun
was pretty hard for them. They were supplied
with water and sun umbrellas and they did
an excellent job in the conditions. There was
a mixture of full time (paid) referees and
relief referees and experienced A and AA
grade NZ shooters drawn from the squads
to do this job. It was necessary to provide all
competitors with a high degree of accuracy
for referee and scoring for this competition.
Thank you to everyone who helped with this
vital job. The waiting shooters were also well
catered for with large sun shades and plenty
of seating under the trees. Just to give you
an idea of how seriously some local shooters
took this event, the club were going to put
out plastic chairs. John Waldron thought
this wasn’t good enough. Timber was
milled in Southland and came up to Tokoroa
Engineering where it was sanded and made
into the most spectacular tables and seating
that has ever been at club grounds. One
was just outside the club house; everyone
on the grounds was invited to sign it, then
it will be clear lacquered as a momentum of
the event. At the end of the second day the
600 points (200 targets) had been clocked
up and it was still our Stuart Sutherland and
Darryn Nicholls (Australia) who were going
head to head on 599. Young Mitchell Iles
was following on 597. First Lady was Natalie
Curtis (NZ) on 589 and John Maxwell led
the Veterans on 595. The A Grade top score
at the end of day 2 was Michael Hartley
(England) on 589, B Grade was our Junior
shooter Cameron Crapp on 581 and C Grade
was led by New Zealander Leszek Potoczny
(Wanaka) on 574. Well, what a delight when
gunshot 11
the results of the Open team were in. It
was our own team of Robert Prince, Vance
Butcher, Jonathan Beddis, John Waldon and
Stuart Sutherland whose team score of 2366
won the 2014 World Open Teams event.
This is the first time New Zealand has won
the Open Teams event so this was a pretty
special occasion. The lowest team members
score is dropped so only 4 shooters' scores
count in the final team score in the Open
team and two team members' scores count
in the categories teams. The Australian
Open team was 10 points behind on 2356,
followed by the England team on 2351. Our
New Zealand Ladies No 1 team (Anja van de
Wetering, Natalie Rooney, Sheryl Anglem)
shot 1170 to win the Ladies team event,
followed by the Australian team on 1157 and
the New Zealand Ladies No 2 team (Brittany
Pilcher, Natalie Curtis, Jan Manson) on
1156 who were 3rd. This is the 4th time in a
row New Zealand has won the Ladies team
event. It was the English A team who won
the Juniors team event with 1176, followed
by the Australian team, then our Juniors
No 1 team (James Fulford, William Rooney,
Mitchell Dean) were 3rd on 1163. The English
Veterans team won the Veterans team event
with 1170, followed by Australia on 1164, and
the New Zealand Veterans No 1 team (Laurie
Coppins, Graham Geater, Ian Marshall) were
3rd on 1155.
Wednesday, the final day, was cloudy
but fine. Shooting started promptly at
9am. Everyone shot 50 targets, then the
top 10% of each grade and categories also
shoot another 50 targets to determine the
winners. The first 50 targets was all over by
2pm with the final underway by 2.45pm. The
cut off for the Open winners' 10% was 731
points. Twenty two squads with 110 shooters
that encompassed all the open, grades
and category final went out to determine
the winners. If they still tie after the final
50 targets, then they shoot a round of
Points, then it reverts to Single Barrel. The
crowd went wild when Huntly shooter Jon
Beddis shot 895/900 and took the World
Champion overall title clear. Jon was named
as our Shooter of the Year at the Hall of Fame
evening the previous week but this must
certainly be something that one could only
dream about. Well Jon pulled it off from the
best of the best from around the World. The
specially engraved Beretta DT11, the ICTSF
medal, the Koru, the $5,500 in prize money
all go to Jon. He was such a popular winner
that it really made me proud to be a New
Zealander and see him win this. The Overall
placings went to 10th place with Jonathan
1st, Austin Coxhead (England 2nd on 894,
Darryn Nicholls (Australia) 3rd on 894 and
Stephen Aitkins (Australia) 4th on 894.

Stuart Sutherland, from Southland, finished
up a very credible 5th on 893, followed by
young Toby Nicholl (Thames) 6th on 892.
David Goulding (Ireland) was 7th on 891,
John Maxwell (Australia) was 8th on 891,
followed by Andrew Brady (Australia) 9th
on 891 and Gary Kelly (Australia) was 10th
on 890. The Grade places saw Australia
take out all the places in AA grade on 888.
A Grade was Joe Booth (England) 1st on 883,
followed by countryman Michael Hartley on
879 2nd, and Ellis Jones (Wales) 3rd on 877.
We featured in B Grade with Junior shooter
Cameron Crapp 1st shooting 858, Todd
Jacobs 2nd on 857 and David Pearson 3rd
on 849. New Zealand also featured in the C
Grade placings with Leszek Potoczny 1st 853,
Bradley Parrott 2nd 823 and Lionel Hemming
3rd 810. Our Ladies showed how it was done
with Natalie Curtis from Matamata winning
the individual Ladies title on 876. This isn’t
the first time she has done this; Natalie won
the Ladies title in 2005. Only 1 point behind
was Natalie Rooney, who was the Ladies
winner in 2008 and 2012). Zarah Powell
(Australia) was 3rd on 871. Australia took out
all 3 places in the Veterans category with John
Maxwell 1st on 891, Garry Kelly 2nd on 891
and Gary Hayden on 883. The Juniors was a
close call with James Willett and Mitchell Iles
having to battle it out for 1st and 2nd place,
both tied on 888 points. Young James ended
up taking 1st place with Mitchell getting 2nd
and Curtis Woolley (England) 3rd on 885.
John McCormack (ICTSF President)
Martyn Coe (Beretta NZ) both spoke to a
large crowd at the presentations. There were
even TV cameras at the presentations. Barry
Williamson had done such a wonderful job
over the tournament keeping the media up
with the results and feeding them interesting
stories about what we were up to we were
fortunate to see a level of media exposure we
have never enjoyed before. Well done Barry.
Ian Hovenden worked his magic with the
computer programme and had the results
out in quick-smart time, with no issues. The
usual team in the office, very ably assisted by
Sally van de Wetering kept the paper work
flowing and the shooters happy. Well done
team. This shoot was a completely new
experience for everyone and you all did really
well.
After the presentations, everyone left
for home with pleasant memories of a
successful, enjoyable tournament. That
just left the cleaning up to be done, the
loaned traps to go back to the clubs and the
thousand other jobs to be done. There were
13 tonnes of lead fired at the club over the
tournament. The work doesn’t stop when
the shooting does and the club members all
need to look back on the event and take pride
in a job well done. This was certainly the
largest tournament the country has hosted
in a very long time and the atmosphere and
friendliness is something that everyone will
remember, long after they have forgotten
what they shot.

To say what they have done with the
clubhouse and grounds is amazing is an
understatement. I knew there had been a
HUGE amount of work going on for months
and had been getting regular updates
on the progress and I was really looking
forward to seeing it. I arrived on Friday and
the place was buzzing with activity. The
grounds looked in such fabulous condition
and ready to go. The trade sites were
set up, the most enormous marquee for
catering was in place and it didn’t seem like
anything had been overlooked. There were
huge trees that had been made into the
most magnificent seating along the traps.
Outside the recently extended clubhouse
there were the most massive tables that
didn’t look out of place and just begged
to be sat at over a cup of coffee and a chat.
The club had been transformed; extended,
carpeted,
painted
and
completely
modernised from an old club house to a
new, modern facility. What a pleasure it
will be to work in there in the future. And
the people are still smiling after all this
work!! It’s hard to single out individual
people who have contributed more than
any others but David Muggeridge has been
the driving force to see this project through
to completion. Terry Lallich is one of the
club workers who put in an extra ordinary
amount of time and effort. He deserves
a special medal as he worked almost full
time at the club and ran his own farm AND
always was friendly and helpful to everyone
he saw – what a wonderful person and a
true asset to the club. Joanne Scherer must
also take a bow for her work in the preplanning. The pre-entry and pre-squadding,
while excellent on the day, does create
an awful lot of work prior to the event.
Without her knowledge and availability this
just simply would not have been possible.
The shooters who attended the Nationals
and Worlds have a great debt of gratitude
to David, Joanne, Terry and the workers of
the Waikato Clay Target Club who have all
worked together to give the country this
World-Class facility. Both the upgrade and
the pre-planning have been two major tasks
that have consumed a very large amount of
their time. All done voluntarily for the love
of the sport to ensure the club is left with
a facility that will be there for shooters for
many years. There are, of course, many
other people who all pull together for the
good of the sport, the wonderful people
in the bar, the cleaners, the trap fillers, and
the grounds people, the brilliant ladies in
the office and everyone else who helped
out both before the event and during the
championships. They can be proud of their
efforts and THANK YOU.
Saturday was a lovely Waikato morning.
The pre-squadding saw shooters on the
grounds at 8.30 ready to hand in their
handicap books and get going. This first
morning was a bit slow as the formality of
the first registration had to be done but
it was a one-off procedure for them and
shooting got started at 9am. The new system
of pre squadding only saw two people miss
their squads in the trophy event while still
shooting the Ball Trap so for today, it was
considered a success. The conditions were
pretty good with the light early in the day a
bit problematic but this soon rectified itself.
Ball Trap isn’t the easiest to shoot. There
were no possibles. Bill Isles were here with
his grandson, Mitchell, who is 14. Mitchell
the previous weekend shot 91/100 off the
gun to win a gun and also has just shot 800
straight. What an achievement! The shoot
offs were underway by 4.30. A new sponsor
for the NZCTA featured for the NZ Ball
Trap Championship and we were pleased
to welcome Mai Mai Supplies Ltd as an
official sponsor who were on the grounds
all week. They have NSI, Zoli and Nobel
Sportitalia in their stable and shooters are
urged to consider these highly respected
brands when shopping. Catherine and
Steve Boyd put up a very impressive display
of trophies for this event. There were 198
shooters who shot the NZ Ball Trap (129
AA, 41A, 21 B and 7 C grade). Juniors, Ladies
and Super Veterans was won clear. Two
shooters shot 44 but Derek Sheen won the
shoot off for Veterans. The HOA was won
by Ian Mullarkey from the United Kingdom,
who shot the only 49. Ian took the NZ Silver
Fern, the trophies and the Gunn Estate
wines that have been again kindly donated
by Gunn Estate. Gunn Estate is a long-time
supporter of the DTL Nationals and their
wine is always appreciated by the winners.
Doreen Sanderson shot exceptionally well
taking out 1st A grade and the Ladies title
on 44. Local shooter, Andrew Vincent shot
40 to win the 1st place B grade. French
Polynesia shooter Bertrand Vairaaroa shot
off with South African Andrew Henderson
for C grade 1st and 2nd with Bertrand taking
1st place.
The second event of the day was the
Double Rise trophy sponsored by Target
Products. One hundred and eighty nine
shooters shot this event. HOA for this
event was Mike Sime from Timaru after
a shoot off. AA and A grade winners was
an all-Australian affair. Todd Jacobs from
Amberley broke the Australian stranglehold
on the results by winning the B Grade 1st
place on 37 after a shoot off with Rachelle
Kelly from Australia.
It was a bit cooler on Sunday morning for
the Provincial Shoulder to Shoulder and
the best dressed competition. Nine of the
11 Provinces were represented as Nelson
and Westland could not field teams. The
best dressed competition for the Ray Mac
trophy is getting harder and harder to judge
every year. This year the winner was again
the boys from Southland. It was wonderful
to see so many Provinces making the
effort to present themselves so well this
year and I encourage all areas to continue
to strive to take this magnificent trophy
back to their area. Two Championships
were shot today, the NZ Minis and the NZ
Double Rise Championship. Both were
sponsored by Stager Sport who is now a
familiar brand and well-respected sponsor
to shooters. Stager Sport upped the ante
this year and gave a Blaser F3 Super Sporter
shotgun to the HOA for the NZ Double
Rise Championship. This went to James
Willett from Australia on 48, but he had
to shoot off for it with fellow Australian
Stephen Guest who took 1st AA Grade.
The NZ Double Rise Championships had
298 entries including 22 Juniors, 26 Ladies,
48 Veterans and 21 Super Veterans. Again
Gunn Estate wines was given to the HOA
winner.
The NZ Minis Championships, also
sponsored by Stager Sport had 296
entries. Fifteen shooters shot the possible,
including 2 A graders. The HOA winner
was the 2010 World DTL Champion Darryn
Nicholls, closely followed by Thames
shooter Toby Nicholl after a shoot off that
went 23 targets. Again Stager Sport had
trophies that were very well received by the
winners and the NZCTA is grateful for their
sponsorship. Stager had a large marquee at
the grounds all week with their products
on display. Michael Dobbie from Southland
won 3rd A Grade and West Otago shooter
Mike Millard was 1st B Grade. Putaruru’s
Wayne Jones won 2nd C Grade on 21.
Thames shooter Anja van de Wetering took
out the Ladies title with a 24, and Whitianga
Veteran Bill Smith won that category with
a possible.
Monday started with an early shower,
which cleared, then it rained again, cleared
again, then the wind came up and that was
it for the day. The Handicap by Distance
day saw lots of shooters shift their marks
to unfamiliar territory. Some were happy,
some were not but whatever they were
on they just had to deal with it and go and
shoot the targets. The International flavour
of these Championships was starting

had 25 UK, 10 South Africa, 6 Samoa, 10
New Caledonia, 6 Ireland and 20 French
Polynesia entries from a field of 342. Foster
Stihl Shop was the sponsor for today. Barry
Foster is well known for his support of
shooting and the trophies he put up today
was nothing short of incredible. There were
only 3 shooters who shot the possible 50,
all from New Zealand. Neil Pratt from Te
Kuiti took out the 1st place, shooting on
22metres, followed by Michael Dobbie
from Southland in 2nd. Local shooter
Steve Vincent was 3rd. Then the overseas
shooters started to show their prowess;
Quinten Smit from South Africa was 4th,
Ray Collinson and fellow Australian Jack
Collicoat were 5th and 6th respectively.
Not only did Barry put up the trophies for
the Championship, he added an additional
prize of a Lawnmaster Estate heavy duty
Motor Mower for a club team event. The
proceeds of this went to the Waikato Club
and I am sure they are very grateful. There
were 13 teams who signed up for this and
the Lawnmaster was heading down to
dairy country where the grass grows due
to the heavy rainfall. The Southland team
16 gunshot
of Lindsay Rodgers, Phil Harraway, Stuart
Sutherland, Michael Dobbie and Lyndsay
Maxwell shot 230 so their club will have nice
short lawns thanks to Fosters Stihl Shop.
Dave Hern and Bronco Sports sponsored
a Triples trophy match. There was only one
possible, John Sleightholme from Australia.
Paul Hill (Australia) was 1st AA grade on 49
and David Wordley was 2nd after a shoot off
with Casey Fletcher from Australia. Dave
Hern and Bronco Sports have also got a
trade display on the grounds this week
and their range of products adds a flair to
the event which is very interesting. Their
trophies were well received by the winners
and the shooters were grateful for this
sponsorship.
Tuesday had a cold, strong wind. This made
for interesting targets. The Internationals,
especially the English who have come from
an awful winter were looking for some
warmer temperatures. The promise of this
later in the week kept them happy.
The Triples Championship is sponsored
by the NZ Dairy Farmers group which is a
group of shooters who band together under
the leadership of Stuart Bell and all put in
to sponsor this event. Stuart and Carol
purchase very high quality knives on their
annual trip to Norfolk Island and somehow
manage to get these back into NZ for this
event. The quality of these is exceptional
and would be most welcome in anyone’s
kitchen. Three Hundred and Sixty One
shooters (206 AA, 89 A, 55 B, 11 C Grade)
shooters lined up with more International
shooters present. After eight shooters
shot 74 the Australian shooters took top
honours. Rob Clarke won the HOA title,
trophy, silver fern, sash and Gunn Estate
wine. AA Grade was an all-Australian affair
headed by Stephen Atkins. Michael Dobbie
from Southland won A Grade clear with 73.
B Grade winner was Christian Stephen from
Fiji on 73. Jan Manson was a popular Ladies
winner taking home the knives for Trevor to
use in the kitchen. Derek Sheen shot 74 to
take the Veterans title.
Reloaders Supplies sponsored a trophy
match. Paul Chaplow from England won this
with the possible. Ross Walsh (Australia)
was 1st AA followed by Kai Barlow from
Australia (who was also the Junior winner)
and Mike Sime from Timaru, all shot the
possible.

by Rick Stephens who has Caesar Guerini
and Golden Wing ammunition. There were
508 shooters (255 AA, 126A, 90B, 27C grade)
which is a huge field. This comprised of 46
Ladies, 46 Juniors 88 Veterans (17.3% of the
field) and 31 Super Veterans. The day started
with drizzle and a cold wind but this cleared
during the day. Temperatures certainly have
been a lot colder to date than we are used to
but this is expected to change and revert to
slightly warmer weather. There was a very
small delay in getting the shoot underway
as the score cards had to be replaced with
waterproof ones but the shoot off started
around 1pm. There were 70 shooters who
shot the possible and by 4pm it was down
to six shooters, all Australians. The shoot
off was all over by 4.45pm. James Willett
and Arty Del Ben went 191 in the shoot off
to establish that James won the NZ Single
Rise title, the Golden Wing ammunition,
the Silver Fern, sash and the Gunn Estate
wine. Rosie Maskell donated trophies for
the Ladies for the next three events and
this one went to Tracey McDonnell from
Australia. All the AA, A and B grades were
determined by shooting possibles. David
Dickie from Nightcaps won 2nd A Grade
with Kieran Rutten from Palmerston North
taking 3rd. Shane Sanders (Dunedin) was
3rd in B Grade with a possible. Les Potoczny
(Wanaka) was 2nd C Grade on 48. The
Family Challenge Trophy was won by Huntly
shooters Jon and Mitchell Beddis on 99.
Thursday saw the weather return to what
we have come to expect. The day got hotter
and hotter and ended up too hot to stand
out in the sun – a rather pleasant change
from the last few days. The NZ Single
Barrel Championship has been sponsored
by Kilwell/Gamebore for a very long time.
The New Zealand Clay Target Association
finds it always a pleasure to deal with Geoff
from Kilwell. He is extremely generous and
sponsors not only the day’s championship
but also the North vs South DTL teams
event which was shot today. Kilwell are also
a sponsor of school shooting and sporting
clays, truly a multi-discipline sponsor and
one of the “good guys”. Five hundred
and two shooters (263 AA, 131 A, 86 B, 22
C grade) including 45 Ladies, 40 Juniors,
90 Veterans and 31 Super Veterans. From
this field 10 shooters shot the possible
including young Mitchell Isles. Motivated
by the promise made by Grandfather Billie
Iles that if he won a National title before he
was 15 Billy would give him his SC3 Perazzi,
Mitchell just kept hitting the targets. Jon
Beddis dropped his 53rd target which young
Mitchell smoked giving him the NZ Single
Barrel title. Billy had previously won this
title in 1995 and 1987 – 11 year before Mitchell
was born. As Mitchell was too young to take
the Gunn Estate wines it was given to Billie.
New NZCTA Councillor Robert Prince won
3rd AA Grade after shooting 27 in the shoot
off. The Kilwell trophies this year were in
the form of vouchers which the winners
could use to redeem from their web site.
This was a popular move as shooters then
could choose exactly what they wanted.
Junior shooter Lukas Nicholl from Waikato
won the A Grade on 49 after a shoot off
with Zygmunt Potoczny from Wanaka and
Paul Liobl from Samoa. David Donald from
Western Lake won B Grade clear with 49.
Matamata Lady Natalie Curtis took the
Ladies clear with 49. Rosalie Maskell had
donated lovely gift packs for the Single
Rise, Single Barrel and Points Score events
Ladies winners and Natalie was today’s
grateful recipient. Two Veterans shot the
possible and it was Australian Gary Kelly

The North Island teams made a clean

North vs South teams’ event. The North
Island team (Toby Nicholl, Robert Prince,
Jon Beddis, Neil Pratt, David Wordley)
shot 366 which was 13 points up on the
South Island team (Craig Pilcher, Stuart
Sutherland, Boston Walker, Colin Waghorn,
Barry Foster). The North Island Ladies team
(Anja van de Wetering, Deborah Pritchard,
Doreen Sanderson) shot 203 but were only
one point ahead of the South Island team
(Natalie Rooney, Sheryl Anglem, Rebecca

(Kent Nicholl, Mitchell Beddis, Mitchell

Island team (James Crafts, Shane Sanders,
Rachel Bell) on 216. The Veterans North
Island team (Laurie Coppins, Stuart Bell, Ian
Marshall) were also two points ahead of the
South Island team (Ray Everett, Ewen Pirie,
Trevor Manson.)
Friday was Beretta’s day. The conditions
were fine and clear for the NZ Points Score
championship. There were 577 entries for
this event. Beretta are a major sponsor for
the NZCTA and they sponsor the NZ Points
Score event. After the qualifying rounds
were shot there were 20 possibles shot,
including two from A Grade and two from
B Grade. It was young Mitchell Iles who
lead the charge again and shot a further
65 targets to take his second National title
from fellow Australian John Sleightholme.
Again Mitchell was too young to be given
the Gunn Estate wine so it went to his
coach and Grandfather Billie. Graeme Allen
from Taupo was 2nd and Andrew Brady
(Australia) was 3rd AA Grade. Kent Nicholl
was still showing his fellow Waikato mates
how it was done and shot the possible to
take 2nd B grade. Natalie Curtis won the
Ladies title again but only after a shoot
off. The NZCTA is very grateful to Beretta
for supplying a very impressive array of
trophies for this event which were very well
received by the recipients.
The NZ High Gun this year was in line to
win a cased Beretta 692 Trap with adjustable
comb, 12ga, 30” fixed choke. It was
Australian shooter, Darryn Nicholls who
won this magnificent gun, very generously
donated by Beretta NZ with a score of 439.
Only 2 behind was Brian Hartley from Bay of
Plenty on 437 who won AA Grade. Christian
Stephen, who had recently been moved up
to A Grade, proved he is very capable in this
grade won the A Grade High Gun on 427.
Tuanua Degage (French Polynesia) won B
Grade on 419 and Swee Seng Phua (Fiji) won
C Grade on 393. Anja van de Wetering took
the Ladies High Gun on 419. It came as no
surprise that Mitchell Iles took the Juniors
High Gun, his score was 430. Les Clarke
(Auckland Met) won Veterans High Gun
on 425 and Laurie Coppins won the Super
Veterans for the 3rd year in a row with 416.
Once the Mackintosh teams were worked
out and the shoot offs were done, the
presentations got underway. Martyn Coe
from Beretta presented the day’s trophies
to their grateful receivers.
Jon Beddis was the Highest Mackintosh
qualifier for the Open Mackintosh team on
a clean score of 250. Natalie Curtis took the
Highest Ladies qualifier cup, Kent Nicholl
took the Junior cup and Laurie Coppins took
the Veterans Cup. There were a few new
names in the Open team this year and some
shooters who you would expect to be in the
team were not but that is the way things
go. There were 4 juniors who shot in the
Open team and another two who qualified
for the Open team but nominated to shoot
in the Junior team. This is a reflection on
the quality of the shooting of these young
people.
Gunn Estate Wines were presented to the
winners and this was very well received.
Saturday the Mackintosh teams shot at the
later time of 1pm. This year we had a brand
new sponsor. The lovely people from Perazzi
generously sponsored the Mackintosh
trophy event. All team members received
Clever Mirage Ammunition (via Reloaders
Supplies). Perazzi had a trade site on the
grounds all week and provided an excellent
service to the shooters supplying excellent
back up support for their customers. Filippo
Petriella came on board as a major sponsor
of the NZCTA last year, also sponsoring
the NZ Skeet Championship and his
sponsorship is very precious and valued by
the Association. There were only 4 shooters
who shot the 100 targets (Kent Nicholl, Paul
Black, Lloyd Agnew and Natalie Rooney).
It was Kent Nicholl, a junior shooter who
shot the team High Gun on 296. Well done
Kent. Kent is the youngest from a shooting
family in Waikato and obviously has a great
future in the sport ahead of him. After the
team photos were taken everyone left the
grounds to attend the official function for
the Worlds and that was the end of the
Nationals for the year.

NZCTA LIAISON REVIEW ON 2014 ICTSF WORLD DTL CHAMPS
Report by Martin van de Wetering
I write this brief report as the NZCTA liaison for this World DTL event.
It is therefore my own personal review of the event, not necessarily the
views of the NZCTA Council.
My return to Council in 2013 resulted in one of my roles being
a liaison between the Waikato Clay Target Club and the NZCTA.
The first impression I got was one of amazement at the amount of
development work undertaken at the National grounds at the Waikato
Club. This will surely be of considerable benefit to us all as shooters,
in a range of the disciplines we enjoy, for many years to come. A great
effort on the part of the Waikato Club and its members.
The Nationals in 2014, followed by the Worlds, were always going to
be a huge undertaking with the numbers involved. I set out below the
key features, and some acknowledgements, that I believe made this
event so enjoyable to be part of, and so successful.
• Firstly, the pre-registration and the resulting pre-squadding was
essential. Great to see squads on the mark over all the available
fields for an event each day by 9am. This allowed the events on
each day to be completed in a timely manner, despite the huge
increase in numbers on earlier years.
• I cannot give enough praise for the administration people in the
Waikato Club who organized this pre-registration and squadding
process, plus all the other work that was involved. There must
have been countless hours spent on this. I would personally like
to thank Joanne Schearer, the club’s new secretary who took on
a significant part of these roles, despite a lack of past experience
in running National Championships and large events such as this.
Well done and it was a pleasure working with you.
• The pre-Worlds function had a great NZ flavour, especially
enjoyed by our overseas visitors. The format was just what the
event needed.
• Many thanks to all those involved in adding the additional 4 fields
to the grounds, which of course were absolutely essential for the
Worlds. To the local clubs that loaned Traps and equipment for
the extra fields, thanks, as this allowed for these to be in place
without the need to invest capital on new equipment, that would
otherwise see little use for years.
• The competition on a daily basis does not just happen – it is
organized. The Shoot Marshalls, Robert Prince and Dean Everett
did a great job keeping the shoot running on each day.
• To make a great event, it is often the smaller things done well that
make a great difference to appearance and comfort of the place.
The team cleaning, especially the toilet facilities, your role was not
unnoticed as it made being at the club a pleasure (unlike some
other venues we have been to for the Worlds in recent years).
Also, the group clearing and constantly cleaning up the rubbish
bins, filling the traps, servicing traps each night, etc, you did a
great job. Some were working full time at the club as well as doing
their farm/business duties at night with only a few hours’ sleep.
Thanks to all the team for that effort.
• There is no way the Worlds event would have run without us
having Referees on each field. These people volunteered so
that all the rest of us could enjoy the competition. The roster of
referees became a significant last minute issue, with there being
insufficient numbers so grateful thanks to those who volunteered
to undertake this job. These Referees worked the entire 8 hour
day during the Worlds, and were looking after squads for 5-6 hours
a day. To help provide relief we needed to call on competitors to
cover in the relief role for either a morning or afternoon, hopefully
without affecting their own shooting. To the shooters who
volunteered and so willingly agreed to help, I cannot say thanks
enough. It was a pleasure to have Des from the UK work with
us, and it was also noted that a Referee travelled from the South
Island just to undertake this role. My thanks to you all.
• The goal for this event was to make it as fair as possible for all.
Therefore, we needed to have assistants for the Referees, to do the
scoring. The only way that was going to happen was by drawing on
our shooters to help in that. The campers on the grounds helped
out considerably by looking after the early squads and others were
drawn from the squads that had just shot. I have been to 5 previous
Worlds, all overseas and have never been asked as a visitor to score
or work, so the feeling was that this was our NZ Worlds and that
we should look after the event. I know that scoring for 2 hours
after just having shot was a big ask, and for that reason many hours
of work was put into trying to ensure you only did the job once
for a full wave, and that you were working close to where you just
finished shooting. I know we could have organized the water
and shade better so my apologies for that (not helped by some
umbrellas being purloined after day 1). To those who accepted
this role willingly as part of hosting this event, my thanks. The
disappointing thing for me was the few who didn’t show up. To
those who objected, I can only say that we in NZ get the Worlds
once every 12 years and so 2 hours out of 12 years is surely not too
much to ask.
• An enjoyable and efficient event is all about atmosphere and
attitude. To me, what made so much of a difference was those
things that may go a little un-noticed, but which do make a big
difference. The work put in by Lindsay Stephenson and John
Waldon through their business in creating those unique tables
added to that atmosphere and a point of difference. They were
also very efficient in managing the traps, especially the temporary
fields with the trappers running out to the trap, re-filling them and
back again before the squads had even changed over. Well done
guys on all you added to this event.
• Last, but certainly by no means the least, the Waikato Club for all
your efforts in the physical upgrades undertaken, as well as all the
other management issues. To the whole team, it is and was a great
effort that is well noted and has left the club with superb facilities
for the future. To both Dave & Dianne Muggeridge, I know this
event must have consumed a great part of your lives for the past 3
years, so we all owe you a great deal of gratitude.
Right from the start the vision and goal was to make these Worlds
an enjoyable event with fair competition across the board. That is
why we, as Councillors, spent many unseen hours reviewing scores,
handicap books and records (especially for some overseas visitors)
to ensure grading was correct going into the Worlds event. Whilst
many of us may not have shot as we would have hoped or liked, we
cannot deny that we had the same chances as anyone else, including
the winners. The NZCTA looks to the Worlds for the team results,
as this is the event we aim for through qualifying processes etc. To
have both the Ladies and Open teams win, with Ladies No2 team, Vets
and Juniors all place 3rd, NZCTA is very pleased, as should be all NZ
shooters. To top this off we have the overall World DTL Champion in
Jon Beddis as well as 5th overall by Stuart Sutherland and 6th overall
by Toby Nicholl. The Ladies individual saw both 1st and 2nd taken out
by Natalie Curtis and Natalie Rooney, so a great effort overall by both
the individuals and the teams.
I believe this was the best organized and run Worlds event I have
been to. Fair to say we could tick off most of the boxes! •

300 TGT SKEET WEEKEND
AT HUTT VALLEY
The first 100 Tgt Skeet on Saturday 5th April was the Famous
Grouse Skeet Trophy with prizes again kindly sponsored by Beam
Global. The Famous Grouse Trophy is shot on handicap and also
has an off the gun trophy awarded.
The event is an Ellis Webber North/South qualifying event for
Wairarapa Gun Club and although we had near perfect shooting
conditions, we only had 15 shooters for the day. This is due to a
clash with another North South qualifying Skeet weekend in Te
Kuiti and the fact that the DTL Nationals and World Champs only
finished 3 or 4 weeks ago, shooters are probably still recovering
physically and financially.
Five shooters managed to qualify for the shoot off with possibles
on handicap, Dave Grant, Grant Wareham, Warren Kurney, Wayne
Pym and Peter Peryer. Dave and Warren also tied for the Off the
Gun Trophy on 93 and as a shooter cannot win both, the Off the
Gun trophy was shot off first, with Warren Kurney coming out the
victor. Dave and Wayne went into the handicap shoot off with one
target while Grant and Peter were off scratch, having used all of
their handicap targets to qualify. The shoot off never went past
station two with Dave Grant winning the Famous Grouse Trophy
on Handicap, Wayne Pym second and Grant Wareham third.
Again, we are indebted to Lance Wadham from Beam Global,
who provided all of the Famous Grouse products, which were all
well received.
We shot the first 50 targets on Saturday of the Hull Cartridges
and Blaser Skeet events, 2x 100 tgt matches, both sponsored again
by Barry Foster and shot in grades and completed the remaining
150 targets on the Sunday.
The first 100 Hull Cartridges and Blaser event resulted in Jamie
Peryer-Fursdon winning HOA on 95, closely followed by a regular
visitor to our big skeet events, Eric Dais who won the A grade on 94.
Dave Grant was 2nd A grade on 92 and Phil Bazalo was 3rd A grade
on 87. Wayne Pym won the B grade on 91 from Grant Wareham on
89 and Peter Peryer was 3rd B grade on 86. David Donald won the
C grade on 77 from Mike Dasler on 74 and Bayley Donald taking 3rd
C grade on 71.
The second 100 Hull Cartridges and Blaser event saw Jamie
Peryer-Fursdon again winning HOA on 96. Dave Turner was first
A grade on 95, followed by Eric Dais 2nd A grade on 92 and Donna
Matthews 3rd A grade on 91.
The B grade was won by Alan Markham on 95, yes 95. In the last
25, Alan missed his repeat on low eight for a possible which would
have tied for the HOA score with Jamie. Alan shot brilliantly for the
day, shooting 50 straight in the morning which was the second half
of the middle 100 tgt event and having not shot on the Saturday,
missed the first 50 and was not eligible for the match. This is the
first time Alan has shot 50 straight. Wayne Pym was 2nd B grade
on 93 and Peter Peryer 3rd B grade on 91. Mike Dasler won the C
grade on 77 after a shoot off with David Donald also on 77 and
Karen Hayes taking 3rd C grade on 75.
Once again, a big thank you to the sponsors for the weekend,
Beam Global for the Famous Grouse Trophies on Saturday and
Hull Cartridges and Blaser for both events on Saturday and Sunday.
Also, thanks to the visiting shooters, Eric Dais, Donna Matthews,
Jamie Peryer-Fursdon and the Donald clan.
Thanks to Suzanne and Hamish Wareham for keeping the traps
topped up. See you next time. •

THE VIEW FROM THE TOP
At a shoot locally the word went out that referees and scorers
were required for the upcoming Worlds Championships in
Hamilton. Having had some experience as a Juror in Germany
for the Black Powder World Champs in shotguns, I along with
several other club members, agreed to put our names forward.
Some paperwork later and a lot of rumours as to what was
required we arrived at the pre-shoot meeting in Hamilton
where it was stressed that each squad be completed in 15
minutes and were to start at 8.30am. Sorry no, it was too foggy
and delayed till 9.00am.
We each had a programme which indicated which bank of
traps we were to officiate at and which waves (of shooters) we
were to run. Congratulations to those who compiled the lists
and they worked perfectly and as each squad finished the next
was waiting and the 15 minute per squad was right on.
It was our task to see that every shooter had the opportunity
to perform at the very best. Unfortunately the view from the top
is not always the best. The background of maturing maize with
a row of trees whose tops were mostly in the area of vision that
the clays usually broke. So it was no easy task which became
more difficult if there was a change of light.
So there was not an opportunity to see and watch the World’s
best shooters performing.
Moving on to some of my observations over the three days.
We judged on approximately 3000 clays per day with there
being about 1000 less on day three. The traps performed well
on all days with a minimum of trouble. A friend in charge of one
bank had only one minor problem in three days.
The number of Junior and Lady shooters impressed. All
appeared to shoot well, with one lady using the only semi-auto
on the ground and she handled it better than a lot with under &
overs. She told me it was her duck gun so the ducks in her area
are in for a hard time.
Some of our juniors appear to have developed the habit of
throwing their empties at the gin after a miss. That and glaring
at the referee doesn’t help, it only disrupts their rhythm as
well as sometimes setting off the trap. Another overseas lady
insisted that she only shot after seeing a target over the peg.
She lost interest after being told this could be arranged but a fee
of $200 was payable but refunded if an alteration was needed.
Saw no release triggers but one shooter was using his top barrel
first and informed us of this.
The better squads were probably more difficult than others as
it was a surprise when they missed one but on the other hand
an overseas squad shooting their first detail with some shooters
over double figures down were in for a rough morning.
The practice of shooting chips may look good but many did not
make their second when needed. The most missed targets by far
were those just off centre, followed by half angles.
The mechanical shooters are brilliant to watch but on occasions
lose the plot for a target or two before picking it up again.
What is an issue is the question of light. On a number of
occasions a detail of competent shooters (all on) had a change
of light as in a cloud cover. One group dropped 4 in a row and
several 3 in a row. A lot of old shooters will think it a lot of BS
but it is a factor and I would be interested in any other opinions.
A rifle shooter friend clamped a rifle in a vice and tracked the
point of aim every ½ hour all day. It moved in a large C shape and
it created more problems than it solved.
During the course of the shoot a number of cartridges of
different colours were used and there was little apparent change
apart from one brand that was very soft. I checked a couple
between squads and they were factory loads and another referee
commented you get what you pay for.
The set up for the first bank of traps was of much interest. The
traps were more or less mounted on the ground with a sliding
cover which slid back to service. No pit and easy to load. The
trapper boys were all very slick and no traps ran out.
Some of the most fatigued on site were the traders after a week
of Nationals and then the Worlds with a change of clothing and
good hot showers high on their list. They all indicated positive
results and ongoing prospects.
I was not involved in the Nationals but the World organisers
can take a bow.
Well organised, well run and a great result.

Host - Waikato Clay Target Club
The mammoth preparation for the World Trap Championships was
not a deterrent to the team of Waikato Sporting Clay Workers who
accepted the challenge to host the 2014 New Zealand Grand Prix.
Vice President Terry Lalich, with the support of Murray Pratt and
his team, worked in conjunction with the club’s primary focus on
the World DTL, to deliver what has been hailed as one of the ‘best
Grand Prix’s’.
Perfect weather for the preparation of the event guided the team
to take advantage of the surrounding maize to provide an excellent
selection of targets for FITASC Delegate Ray McFarlane to appraise.
With minor changes made to each course, Waikato Clay Target
Club was prepared to accommodate the 140+ field of local and
international competitors to battle the 200 interesting targets.
With a sigh of relief, the wind and rain remained absent for the two
day event. Target flight, and reliable traps delivered the intended
outcome.
Four layouts split into two visits of 50 targets per day offered the
Waikato Team ample opportunity to make ‘interesting changes’
for the following day’s remaining 100 targets. Four stands per
round provided the ‘right mix’ of challenges that complied with
the FITASC’s Association current philosophy of providing technical
targets within acceptable distance.
Noting a large contingent of high end overseas competitors the
New Zealand shooters made preparation for another challenge from
across the Ditch. Australian top shot John Younger was in good form
after taking out the previous day’s shoot at TVDA. Brian Deadman
was close behind John at TVDA. A second place reinforced Brian’s
agenda to occupy the top spot on the Grand Prix podium.
Leading scores changed throughout the first day and a number of
competitors remained in the running for top spot. The change of
targets for the final 100 would deliver a close and high score finish.
Both John Younger and Brian Deadman started the last 50 with
one target difference in their scores. Knowing the closing stages
would place pressure on all prospective winners, this pressure was
more apparent on Australia and New Zealand's best as they moved
towards the closing stages of the event. An unexpected dropped pair
from Brian, and a lost easy target from John placed both competitors
on the overall score of 191/200. The shootoff was an excellent finale
to the event.
Ray McFarlane provided a shoot off layout to test both ‘top guns’
and, when the dust finally settled, John Younger from Australia was
the winner by one target. Many congratulatory remarks regarding
the smooth running of the event and competitor enjoyment were
expressed at the presentation. The effort put in by the Waikato Clay
Target Club was gratefully acknowledged.

200 TARGET SHOOT
Woodville February 2014
Variable wind conditions contributed to a challenging day for the
40 plus shooters and this was reflected in the scores as well as the
number of trap resets. The 200 target shoot, shot in lots of 50s,
was made up of 100 SR, 50 PS and 50 SB. All grades were keenly
contested with the final placings, in all but C Grade, not being
decided until the last event.
After a slow start Vance Butcher showed his shooting stamina to
win HOA on a score of 287/300.
Kevin Barbridge prevailed over Grant Wareham in a 60 target
shoot off to take first in A Grade. B Grade was won by David Donald
followed by the wily Dave Woolford. Mike Davis showed a clean
set of heels to the rest of the C Grade shooters to comfortably
take first place.
A big thank you to Target Products Ltd for their generous
ammunition sponsorship of the event.

2014 ROSS CARD MEMORIAL SHOOT
Everyone enjoyed another great day of shooting at the manicured
Thames grounds. The weather cooperated with just a light breeze
at times and some passing cloud to remind us of the importance
to stay focused.
This shoot is in memory of Ross Card who got ATA shooting
started in New Zealand. Ross enjoyed singles (single barrel 5
targets per lane). Main ATA singles events are 200 targets shot 100
in the morning and 100 in the afternoon so we follow the same
format, but with the bonus of adding a great Thames lunch in the
middle.
Mary Card very kindly donated $500 to the prize pool again and
the ATA matched it so there was $1000 on the table plus options,
and an option on each 100 at $2.50 for the Buckle Jackpot of
$2045.00. A 99 in the back half by new member Drew Muirhead
had the 100 straight buckle nervous but it got away again
unclaimed.
Thanks again to the regular workers, Martin and Don coming in
early to set and load traps and set up the fields. Brian Hartley and
Neville Crawford setting targets and Bruce Parkin helping to get
the squads going. Also, thank you to the competitors who helped
referee and score as well as trap loading and helping with clean up
at the end of the day. Much appreciated.
Unfortunately, Mary Card was unable to attend again with family
members not available to bring her over from Hamilton. As the
ongoing principal sponsor of the event its always a pleasure to have
her in attendance to present the cup she had made to the winner
and a photo of her with them in the winners' circle. Hopefully next
year.
Dave Wordley and new member Mitchell Beddis were tied on
192/200 for HOA and 1st A with Bill Smith and Drew Muirhead
tied on 191/200 for second and third A Grade. ATA singles shoot
offs are over 25 targets 5 per lane with the top score prevailing and
or going additional rounds if the scores are tied. They all dropped
one in the first round. Second round saw Dave and Mitchell drop
another one each with Bill Smith one down for 2nd and Drew two
down for 3rd. After a third round and apparently running on fumes
in the tank Dave Wordley shot a 23 to Mitchell's very well shot 22.
Looks like great shooting and sportsmanship are running in the
family with Mitchell fortunate to have dad Jon Beddis keeping an
eye on him.

200 COMPAK AND KEITH O’REILLY MEMORIAL TROPHY
Waikato (L-R) D Groundwater, D Alley, C Gibbison, R Carruthers
HOA Adam Green
Perfectly still fine weather at the Wanganui/Rangitikei club
greeted shooters on the Saturday for the first 100 targets of the
200 target Compak Trophy shoot.
Four fields had been set with a great variety of targets none of
which were unshootable as displayed by the number of 25’s shot
over all fields during the day.
Although numbers were less than expected all shooters had
a great day's competition. The shoot ran smoothly and was
completed early afternoon for some to lick their wounds and
others to rejoice in some very good scores and think about the
second day. The top scores after the first 100 targets were:
AA grade. Glenn Rastrick 97 followed closely by Adam Green and
Daryn Norling on 96’s A grade Jason Teague 93, Chris Gibbison,
Brian Hill 90. B grade Junior shooter Keaton Norling 81, Kim Owen
80. C grade Allan McDonald 77.
The second day incorporated the Keith O’Reilly Trophy teams
match over the 100 targets and again the weather was perfect for
shooting. Scores were on a par with Saturday's shooting and all
competition was finished early so the travellers could be home at
a reasonable hour.
AA grade was hotly contested with Adam Green, Darryl
Groundwater and Glenn Rastrick all on 189. After a shoot off Adam
Green took out HOA. 1st AA Darryl Groundwater 2nd. Glenn
Rastrick 3rd David Alley.188.
A grade:- 1st Jason Teague 185, 2nd Chris Gibbison, 179, 3rd Brian
Hill 173. B grade: 1st Keaton Norling 166, 2nd Kim Owen 154, 3rd
Simon Hawken 150. C grade 1st Allan McDonald 148. Juniors:
Keaton Norling 166.
Veterans. Darryl Groundwater 189, Allen Alley 173, Brian Hill 173.
Keith O’Reilly Trophy Match: There were 4 teams entered for this
match, one from Hutt Valley, two from Wanganui and one from
Waikato. These teams are 5 man teams with the top four scores to
count. Waikato put up strong competition to take out the Trophy
on 367/400 with Wanganui No 1, 19 targets behind on 348, Hutt
Valley 330 and Wanganui No 2. 319.•

REFEREES'
S'
CORNER
COR
BY BLUE FREEMAN
Well, since the last article we have
reviewed the rules and incorporated all
changes made over the last four years. The
version that is on the Association website
is right up to date and should be the only
one you refer to. There are no errata for the
time being.
I wish I could say the new book has no
errors, but just today I noted that Rule 6-09
should actually be incorporated within
rule 6-46. I suggest all referees mark their
rule books to cross refer these two rules.
Quite a number of shooters step off a
skeet station and take themselves off to
the next station without consideration for
the shooters following. Referees should
control this habit.
Shoot-Offs
Another occasion arose a couple of
weeks ago where a skeet event was being
contested in a shoot-off. Both shooters
missed the same target, and then quite
correctly returned to station 1 to start
the shoot-off again. Comments from
the onlookers confirmed that not many
shooters read their rule books. I was asked
to find out when that rule was introduced,
and found it in all rule books since the
1981 issue. It was not in the 1972 book, so
splitting the difference, I’ll say it has been
in vogue for the past 35 years; it isn’t new.
Here it is from the latest book.
Tie Breaking: 4-34
For events requiring a shoot-off to
determine placings, the following tie
breaking rules shall apply: a) Single Rise,
Single Barrel, Ball Trap and Skeet individual
ties shall be shot off on a first miss out
basis. If two or more competitors miss the
same target, a new shoot-off round shall be
commenced where necessary.
In fairness to the onlookers, they may
have been getting confused with skeet
team shoot-offs (Rule 4-36) which have
always been shot off station by station until
one team loses more targets than the other.
DTL Malfunction
Another DTL query came in today from
the Bay of Plenty. The caller asked about a
shooter who has a malfunction on the first
38 gunshot
barrel, and then fires his second barrel at the
target. In this case, the gun has mechanical
triggers and can fire the top barrel even
when the first barrel has misfired.
The answer to this is in the rulebook at rule
5-29 d).
5-29 Another target is to be thrown:
Another target must be thrown
(PROVIDED THE SHOOTER HAS NOT
FIRED) when:
a) the target is thrown before the shooter
calls.
b) the target is not thrown immediately
after the call.
c) an irregular target emerges.
d) in single target events, the shooter’s first
shot misfires due to a malfunction of
either gun or ammunition and he does
not fire the second shot, provided such
malfunction is allowable. If the second
shot is fired the result shall be scored.
You will note that if the first shot misfires,
it is a “no Target” and another target will
be thrown. However, if the shooter elects to
engage the target with his second barrel, the
result of that shot stands.
A similar case is when a shooter fires the
gun upon calling and a target is released.
This would be a “No Target” and another
target thrown. However, if the shooter
elects to engage the target with his second
barrel, the result of that shot stands. And,
if he or she is shooting points score, and
the shot breaks the target, it will be scored
break 2, not break 1.
These instances are specific to trap so
appear in section 5 under the trap rules.
Handicap Books
At council level there have been discussions
over handicap books not being handed in
by some shooters. Some shooters feel it
unnecessary to produce their card as they
will only shoot in the top grade, so why is
a book necessary? Our processes (rules)
are there for all shooters, not just the
top grade. The current process for nonproduction of a handicap card is fair on all
levels of shooter. It is spelled out in rule
3-22 a). If, for example, a B grade shooter
loses or misplaces his handicap card, the
current rules permit him to contest the
competition in his own grade. Any money
he/she wins is withheld until the book is
produced or a new book arranged through
the Association Executive Officer.
HBD Handicaps
Another issue which still causes angst is
the Handicap by Distance rules. I spent
some time at the DTL Nationals with a
couple of passionate shooters from Central
Otago who explained that their perfect
system for HBD is one where just about
everybody moves up or down by one meter
each shoot. This “end state” is at odds
with the way that your council sees the
handicap system. I believe we (Council)
understood that the best system would
be where everyone eventually finds their
skill level and consistently shoots 94% to
96%. Any movement would be based on
ability changes and unlikely to change from
month to month once the shooters' natural
ability was identified. I do hope that the
current system is eventually accepted and
adopted by the HBD exponents.
Nationals / World DTL
I must make comment on the effort put
in to the recent Nationals and World DTL
event at the Waikato Clay Target Club.
The referees and press ganged scorers
did sterling work. The trap mechanics and
trappers were just amazing. I have never
seen lads running to fill traps before,
and the few trap issues were dealt with
in very short time. The grounds were
continually cleaned up and manicured
each night. The girls behind the bar were
patient, efficient and made everybody
feel welcome. Thanks particularly to
Robin and Leigh for their good humour
and for keeping us all in good cheer after
the shooting. To David and his team who
transformed the Waikato grounds, to
Martin for his liaison work and to all the
unsung heroes who made the 2014 World
DTL event what it was; congratulations.
And of course, congratulations to all the
winners; President Trevor Manson was
justifiably bursting with pride at the awards
ceremony. As well he might!
Thanks Shooters. Please check your guns
and your scores. •

TARGET PRODUCTS TOP GUN
AND DISABLED CHAMPS
Hutt Valley
24 shooters at Hutt Valley contested the
Target Products Top Gun event on Sunday
30th March. Attendance was disappointing
due to a clash with a circuit Team Shoot
at Woodville with the majority of our
visiting shooters normally coming from
Wanganui and Woodville, although we did
have visitors from Auckland and the South
Island thanks to the Disabled Champs.
The first event for the day was 25 tgt Skeet
and produced only two possibles by Jamie
Peryer Fursdon and Wayne Pym and a 24 to
Phill Bazalo.
Next was the 25 tgt Compak, Daniel Feutz
was the top scorer in A grade on 23 followed
by Bruce Scott on 20. There were also some
impressive scores posted in B grade, Rob
Edwards shooting 22 and Robert Prince
shooting 21.
Mike Dasler also shot a good score of 19 to
win the C grade Compak.
25 Tgt Single Rise was next and produced
three possibles, two in A grade from Jamie
Peryer-Fursdon and Shane Ashforth and
one in B grade from Peter Peryer (Jamie’s
Dad), followed by Daniel Feutz on 24 after
missing his first target out.
Last event was 25 Tgt Ball Trap and the
top score was 21 posted by five shooters,
four in A grade to Jamie Peryer-Fursdon,
Shane Ashforth, Grant Wareham and
Robert Prince. Peter Peryer (Jamie’s Dad)
top scored the B grade with the other 21.
Target Products kindly donated the prizes
for Top Gun. Prizes of Falcon ammunition
are awarded to HOA and down to fifth
place in each grade, with all 16 place getters
in the draw for the three draws of one slab
Falcon ammunition each.
HOA was won by Jamie Peryer-Fursdon
on 89, Robert Prince won 1st A grade

C grade was won by Sam Sydow on 79.
Bruce Scott was 2nd C grade on 76, John

draw. The three draws of one slab of Falcon
Ammunition each went to Dave Turner,
John Sydow and Peter Peryer.
The Mollaun Shield is also contested
over Top Gun, comprising three person
teams, one from each grade. Shooters are
selected into a team by a draw in the office
to get as many teams as possible, in this
case six teams. The winners were Wayne
Pym, Daniel Feutz and Sam Sydow with
a combined score of 248, 2nd equal were
Shane Ashforth, Rob Edwards and Mike
Dasler on 229 and Tony Brogden, Peter
Peryer and John Sydow also on 229.
The Disabled Championships were run
in conjunction with all four of the Top Gun
events with the following results.

High Gun – Shane Ashforth.
Many thanks to the sponsors of Top Gun,
Target Products, who have supported and
sponsored Top Gun from day one.
A special thanks to Bruce Scott and
his Sporting team for the setting of the
Compak field, all except the “D” target.
Many thanks also to all the shooters who
lent a hand to keep the shoot flowing.
The Top Gun event is one we want to
see growing. With the four disciplines and
the concept of prizes down to five places
in each grade with only the prize winners
eligible for the drawn prize is unique.
There has already been mention to move
this back to a slot between Christmas and
New Year for next year as we had a good
attendance on that time slot last year. •
DUNEDIN HOSTS 25TH ANNUAL MASTERS GAMES
DUNEDIN CLAY TARGET CLUB,
JANUARY, 2014
The Dunedin Clay Target Club recently had
the privilege of holding the 25th Masters
Games over the 8th and 9th of January.
Walking frames had been polished and
wheels oiled … false teeth glued in and
glasses cleaned. Everyone was set for a
great couple of days shooting!
First up for the Saturday morning, two
rounds of skeet starting at 9am sharp!
Unfortunately many of the “oldies” weren’t
aware that we were on daylight saving time,
so shooting didn’t actually start until just
after 10am … by the look of some of them,
they could should have had a few more
minutes or hours beauty sleep.
Brian Thurlow deserves a special mention
as the only shooter to score 100/100 in the
DTL Match as well as getting the High Gun
in the 55 – 64 age group – pretty hard to
improve on that score.
After 2 days of shooting and the odd
game of Bingo, the “Masters” were
gasping for breath and looking around
for refreshments, mainly with a brownish
tinge … (bubbles optional).
Sitting down in the most comfortable
chairs they could find, it was great to hear
the competitive “Masters” swapping
stories and finding every reason possible
for the ones they missed … It’s a great
shame that this aspect of the sport has
become a thing of the past and thankfully,
none of todays’ “Novice” shooters would
ever consider using such lame excuses!!!
The club was exceptionally fortunate to
have Lisa and Nina Daniels visiting the club
on both days and jumped at the chance to
“give it a go”. The girls have also represented
New Zealand in Synchronised Swimming
and were fantastic Ambassadors for the
Games. Being twins, I’m not sure which
sister shot the most targets, all I can tell
you is was the one who asked me – “Is this
anything like playing Wii?” - for the oldies,
Wii is an interactive computerised game
played on a TV. (Never too old to learn is
it guys ?)
Lisa and Nina were also good enough to
come along to the club on the Sunday
and present the medals to the winning
shooters. You did a great job girls and
you’re welcome back at the club anytime.
who can still give the young’uns a run for
their money. Although Jack is a member of
the South Otago Club, he spends a lot of
time at the Dunedin Club and will get to
be an honorary member of the club on his
99th birthday. I think everyone at the club
agreed it was a well-deserved win.
Jack also won a more recent event at the
club, taking away the Festival Cup with
another possible … 25 targets / 26 shells,
he left a lot of younger shooters scraping
their bottom jaws off the clubhouse floor
and scratching their heads at the same
time. Bloody well done Jack !
From the conversations I had with shooters
who had travelled from both the North and
South Islands to compete, there were only
positive comments on the way the shoot
was run and the hospitality shown to them
by our club. Many remarked that it was one
of the best Masters Games they had been
part of and were looking forward to coming
back again in two years’ time to compete
again. I’m sure that some of our members
will be travelling north to Whanganui /
Wanganui for the 26th Masters Games
competition.
The club would like to thank the members
who made sure the shoot ran smoothly,
filling traps, removing rubbish, refs and
markers, office staff, and everyone else who
pitched in to help out.
Special thanks should go to Lindsay and
Sue in the kitchen who kept the shooters
well fed and watered over the two days of
competition. Great cheese rolls guys !
The biggest thank you should go to the
competitors, a great bunch of guys and
it was privilege to host them at our club.
Cheers Guys … Keep the barrels hot!
SUMMARISED RESULTS AS FOLLOWS:

WAIRARAPA DISTRICT CHAMPS
Hutt Valley
33 competitors arrived for the Wairarapa
District Champs, hosted by the Hutt
Valley Gun Club in pretty good conditions,
with visitors from Wanganui, Woodville,
Palmerston North and even a visitor from
Australia on holiday.
Congratulations to Jon Beddis, Natalie
Curtis and Natalie Rooney for their
individual medals at the World DTL
Champs, also to all of the NZ Teams
who picked up medals. A couple of the
members from the winning open team
were present and there was a bit (actually,
quite a lot) of banter going on throughout
the day, especially during presentations.
All in good spirit though.
First up was the Skeet. With no possibles
shot, Murray Cameron, John McKinstry,
Eric Dais and Grant Wareham shot off for
the HOA with Grant Wareham prevailing.
Murray Cameron won 1st A grade from
Eric Dais and Dave Grant took out 3rd A
grade on 23. With Grant winning HOA,
John McKinstry won the B grade followed
by Vance Butcher taking 2nd A grade after
a shoot off with Chris Evans taking 3rd B
grade on 23’s. David Donald won the C
grade on 22, Karen Hayes took out 2nd
C grade from Karl Andrews after a shoot
off on 20’s. The two man teams were won
by Murray Cameron and Eric Dais on 48,
closely followed by Grant Wareham and
Dave Grant on 47.
Next was the Triples and again there were
no possibles. Kim Owen won the A grade
with the only 49 and Kevin Barbridge came
out with 2nd A grade after a shoot off with
Vinnie Butcher taking 3rd A grade on 47’s.
Peter Peryer won 1st B grade on 44. 2nd B
grade going to Grahame Roberts on 43
and David Donald 3rd B grade on 41. John
Donald won the C grade on 36, Don Staples
taking out 2nd C grade on 34 and Matthew
Eades 3rd C grade on 31.
Next up was the Double Rise and this
was increased to 15pr as that is what was
printed in the circuit programme. Robert
Prince led the way to take out 1st A grade
on 28, closely followed by Peter Borrie who
was 2nd A grade and Kevin Barbridge was
3rd A grade after a shoot off with Craig
Matthews on 24’s. Grahame Roberts won
B grade with a very good 25, followed by
Peter Peryer and David Donald 2nd and
3rd B grade respectively on 24’s. The C
grade medal went to Gavin Chambers
after a shoot off with John Donald taking
2nd C grade on 20’s, Ian Gallagher was 3rd
C grade after a shoot off with Matthew
Eades on 19’s. A couple of highlights in the
C grade shoot off were, Gavin Chambers
shot his 5pr clean to take 1st and Matthews
Eades and Ian Gallagher needed 3 lots of
5pr to decide 3rd place, with both Matthew
and Ian scoring 8/10 in their second 5pr
(Ian 00’d the first pair and shot the rest).
Ian then edged out Matthew in the third
5pr shooting 9/10.
The North/ South DTL qualifying events
were next, starting with the Single Rise
and there were 4 possibles shot by Karl
Andrews, Paul Hill, Vinnie Butcher and
Craig Matthews. The short shoot off
resulted in Craig Matthews winning the A
grade from Karl Andrews 2nd A grade and
Vinnie Butcher 3rd A grade. The B grade
was won by Peter Peryer with the only 24,
young Angus Donald taking 2nd B grade
and Grahame Roberts 3rd B grade after
a shoot off on 23’s. Three shooters shot
off to decide the places in C grade with
Matthew Eades winning 1st C grade, from
Don Staples and Ian Gallagher 2nd and
3rd respectively on 21’s. Karl Andrews also
collected the Veterans medal, Karen Hayes
won the Ladies Medal and Angus Donald
won the Junior medal.

what, these were the two members of the
winning open team at the World Champs).
David Donald won the B Grade High Gun
and John Donald won the C Grade High

18 June 1929 – 14 March 2014
It is with sadness that we acknowledge the
passing of our life member Lester Burt.
Lester had been a member of the
Southland Clay Target Club since 1978.
He was a good living person and a “club
man” through and through. He served the
community by becoming a JP and held this
position for many years.
He was a fitter turner by trade. His early
working life was spent at sea and the ships
he crewed on as ship’s engineer travelled
regularly between New Zealand and South
East Asia. He had a change of occupation
after the birth of his two sons and the then
fledging Alliance Freezing Co became
his place of employment. At the time of
his retirement Lester held the position of
Chief Engineer.
We as a club were very fortunate to have
Lester as a member. He was extremely
generous with his time and talents and
was always willing to help in any situation.
This was particularly evident when things
mechanical needed attention. He was a
trap mechanic extraordinaire. If any part of
the traps needed fixed, adjusted, adapted
or reinvented Lester was the man for the
job. He could be relied upon to arrive in
his XF Falcon the boot of which was an
Aladdin’s Cave of overflowing tool boxes
and gadgets. Many of the tools were Lester
specials, modified for a particular purpose.
Another facet of Lester’s abilities was the
art of target setting. He had all the distances
and angles at his fingers tips and passed
this information on to those who expressed
an interest. He had a particular interest in
setting the Ball Trap and always abided by
the rules regarding distance and height, near
enough was never good enough. Having said
that he did have some sayings that were a
part of his character and one that springs
to mind “a blind man on a galloping horse
would be very pleased to see it” was used on
occasion.
Not only was Lester a long serving
committee person, he was also involved for
a time with school shooting. His knowledge
and reliability was a great asset and there
are numerous young shooters who gained
greatly from his teaching over the five years
he was involved.
We mustn’t forget either Lester’s shooting
ability. He had a number of B Grade Provincial
and Island titles to his name, something
he was quietly very proud of. Such was
his standing that in December 2004 the
club bestowed on Lester a well-deserved
life membership. This was something he
accepted in a humble way and was a title he
respected greatly.
It could be said that at times Lester could be
rather brusque, but under that gruff exterior
there was a knowledgeable, intelligent and
practical man. Lester was laid to rest in the
tranquil setting of the Wallacetown cemetery
beside his beloved wife Gwen. RIP •

Hello Shooters. I would like to thank all shooters who attended the funeral service of my
late husband Wattie Leonard in Thames. Also for cards and phone calls.
On the day I just couldn't get to everyone and thanks to those who went and fired a shot

SOUTHLAND DISTRICTS
The Southland Districts were hosted by
the Gorge Road Clay Target Club this year.
The day was a typical Southland day - sun
shining and no wind. Things kicked off at
9am with the Skeet followed by Doubles
and the Minis. There was a good turn out
with over 60 shooters turning up from
all over the South Island. The grounds
were looking sharp and things ran well
throughout the day. Minis were the first
event to be sorted, with eight possibles.
Gavin Searle came out the victor on the
day. Doubles saw David Diack with the
win, heading off Craig Pilcher and Lindsay
Rodgers with 20/20s. There were 12
possibles in Skeet and Kelvin Gutsell was
the last man standing. A great lunch of
cold meat and salads filled the gap, put on
by the ladies. Heading in to the three main
DTL events saw the red paint scattered all
over the score board. Point Score had 12
possibles shot. Brad Warnock headed off
Gavin Searle after 25 targets to win the
event. Everyone joined the "beaten by a
woman club" with Jan Manson winning the
Single Barrel after a shoot off with eight
other possibles having been shot. Over half
of the field shot the 25 in the Single Rise
with 31 shooters lined up for the shoot off. It
was getting on in the afternoon so after 50
targets the shooters still competing went
back to 18m for another 25 which only left six
to go back to 21m. Kelvin Gutsell managed
to handle the distance to win it. The High
Gun shoot off saw Stuart McKerchar, Craig
Pilcher, Shannan Evans, Kelvin Gutsell and
Gavin Searle all three points down with
Shannan managing to win this shoot off.
Incorporated in the Single Rise event was
the Hargrave Shield. Mataura and Gorge
Road were tied one point down. The
Mataura team of Ewen, Kelvin, Warren,
Peter and Doug won by default with one of
Gorge Roads guys having to leave to catch
a plane. The East Vs West team battle was
won by the East team, 2092-2085.
Thanks to Gorge Road Club and their
members for running such a great shoot
and presenting perfect targets – reflection
of the scores is evidence. •

WOODVILLE CLAY
TARGET CLUB HOST
TEAMS EVENTS
Sunday 30th March saw Woodville Clay Target Club host clubs
from Wanganui/Rangitikei, Palmerston North and Dannevirke
to contest for several shields and cups in team events. Each club
entered two teams in each of the following;
Dalziel 25 Skeet, Donnelly Gymcrack, Glenn Shield 20 Single
Rise, McGovern Shield 25 Point Score, Sutherland 10pr Double
Rise and just in case anyone thought that wasn’t quite enough
events we also added 20 Minis to the programme. Thank goodness
there was still daylight saving as it turned out we needed it.
The weather was very kind to us - fine and warm with very little
wind. The first three events went like clockwork but the last three
did not with us experiencing some technical difficulties with the
traps. However, we managed to get through all the events and only
had two shoot offs. These were in the single rise, the Woodville
#2 team shooting off with Wanganui Blue team-with Wanganui
eventually taking out the win after a good battle and in the double
rise, the Woodville #1 team shot off with Dannevirke #1 team with
Dannevirke taking out that win.
Although we weren’t successful in holding on to any of the
trophies this time we thank all the shooters for a great contest and
look forward to a rematch next year.

SOUTHLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS
23 FEB 2014
As the National and World Championships are now only a week
from starting we were expecting that the occasion of our club
championships would be a very good lead into them but the
weather had other ideas. It really was four seasons in one day. We
defend adverse comments about our climatic conditions with a
huge degree of provincial pride here in the south but there was no
denying that the conditions were difficult.
A field of 51 shooters contested the day and needless to say the
shoot offs were mainly of short duration with the exception of the
Single Rise. Generally all went well for the day with the grounds
looking well presented. It is a very busy day with seven disciplines to
decide. The Ball Trap always adds interest to the day's programme.
David Diack (Nightcaps) was over the moon to have shot a possible
in the Ball Trap, a notable achievement all things considered.
David also won top honours in the Double Rise which made his
day more than successful. Mataura member Kelvin Gutsell and
Shannan Evans (Southland) were the only skeet possibles for the
day with Kelvin taking the HOA. Kelvin also featured in the Points
Score shoot off but had to bow to Bob Waugh (Moa Creek) in this
event. Minis were very elusive for most but Neil Horrell (Western
Southland) took the top honours from Stephen Diack (Nightcaps).
Once again a very short shoot-off. No possibles in the Single Barrel
which wasn’t surprising but the Single Rise was only decided after
164 targets, the last 14 of which were shot off 18m by Daniel Warnock
(Gorge Road) who managed to hold against his brother Brad and
Stuart McKerchar (West Otago).
The winners were well received at the presentations and even
though the day was inclement there were generally smiles from
all especially after savouring the cheese rolls and other goodies
provided from our kitchen ladies Donna and Helen.
As usual no one person runs the day. Input from many made the
day a success and our thanks to all for help with the necessary bits.
Our thanks also to wet weather clothing manufacturers!

ROD PAYZE CUP AT WAIHI 2014
On 9th February Waihi Clay Target Club held the Inaugural Rod
Payze Cup. 100 targets shot as 50 Single Rise and 50 Point Score.
The day started off well with good targets and warm temperatures,
afternoon breezes saw some targets start to lift and a few second
barrels and lost targets were seen in the scores. Waihi Clay Target
Club would like to thank Rod Payze an early Waihi club member
who recently very kindly donated some funds to the Waihi Clay
Target Club. Rod left New Zealand some years ago to live overseas
in Australia, and helped raise the funds needed back then for our
current club house building, and said that he had fond memories
of the past living in Waihi and shooting clays birds at the Waihi
grounds.

and double rise were completed and
respective winners found before the single
rise event started, and the rain had finally
stopped.
In the skeet there were seven possibles
over the three grades and after 25 shoot off
targets only Graeme Allen (A) and Scott
Verran (B) remained with Graeme winning
after Scott missed his 5th target.
Twelve shooters on 15 for the minis, and
Steve Vincent took this out over Ross Ellis.

Double Rise saw only two possibles, Ross
Ellis and Toby Nicholl, with Ross taking
HOA.
With good shooting conditions during
the Single Rise qualifying there were
39 possible from a field of 72. After 175
targets these were reduced to a squad of
five including young Lukas Nicholl who
unfortunately missed his 208th target
giving him 1st B grade. Brian Hartley and
Deano Horn followed shortly afterward
leaving Toby Nicholl and Ross Ellis to find
a winner. After 300 targets and at 7.30pm
both agreed to return in the morning to
conclude the shoot off. As can sometimes
happens this didn’t take very long and Ross
shooting first, Toby missed the 23rd target,
giving Ross HOA.
The rain had cleared Sunday morning,
but there was some wind around making
shooting tricky at times. Shoot offs were
held at the end of the day - Triples was the
first event and only five possibles were
shot. Ian Marshall HOA after a very short
shoot off.
Points Score had seven possibles Brian
Hartley winning this. In B grade Yogi
Hansen and Cory Baldock both on 73 had
to shoot off to find B grade winner.
Brian Hartley, Martin van de Wetering
and Ian Hartley were the only shooters to
get 25 in Single Barrel, Brian HOA, Ian 1st
and Martin 2nd.
Brian Hartley was High Gun, five points
down.
With shooting for the day completed by
3.00pm club members did a quick pick up
of targets, put away microphones while
the office staff completed paperwork for
prize giving, which commenced at 3.30pm
making it an early finish for those shooters
who had some distance to travel back
home.
Many thanks to all the club members who
worked tirelessly in the preceding days to
ensure that the grounds were looking good
and traps ready and throwing good targets.
Thanks to Sally van de Wetering who
helped in the office over both days.
