Megan Kane of Spire gives Skyline an insight to this unique company at the cutting edge of satellite technology. What does Spire do? Spire is a satellite-based global data company. We use an array of sensors on each spacecraft to capture data about parts of the Earth that are completely off the grid. Spire is an incredibly global company. Our founding members came from Austria, Canada, and Belgium and our team now hails from 15 different countries and counting. Are there any specific products and projects to highlight? In addition to Spire Sense, our near real-time ship tracking product, we have also introduced 4 SKYLINE AUTUMN ‘15 Spire Stratos - a weather data product. By the end of this year, our satellites will collect five times the number of comparable weather readings than is currently available. That’s a significant amount of data that will vastly improve weather forecasting globally. great engineers and software developers so we’re working overtime to grow our incredible team without sacrificing on the values and talent that have made us successful. Which partners or organisations does Spire work with? It’s great to be close to one of our suppliers and to have access to Glasgow’s great local talent. On top of that, moving into Suite 5A allowed us (for the first time in our company’s history) to exercise the attention to detail that we’d like in an office. Each wall colour has a psychological and emotional impact, each material detail has been picked to emphasise natural light, and our small private cafe area will foster the casual communication that highlights Spire’s commitment to the spread of new ideas and institutional knowledge. We do not speak in specifics about partnerships but we value our great relationship with Clyde Space (our fellow company at Skypark 5). Since day one of Spire’s existence, we’ve been proud to support Ardusat (a STEM education company that brings hands-on science and space science into the classroom). Is there anything that Spire is particularly proud of? Every single person at Spire has a story about their favourite moment at the company or about their first major contribution. It’s rare to find work with so many high performance individuals working in such incredible harmony. We went from an idea on a napkin to space with our first satellite in less than 12 months. By the beginning of next year, we’ll have launched over 20 satellites. What are Spire’s ambitions and what does the future hold? Growth is the major story at Spire. We continue to launch satellites quickly and work closely with our customers to create great products. To continue that, we need more Why choose to come to Skypark? Is there anything else to highlight about Spire? We’re growing quickly and have great new electrically operated sit/stand desks waiting for great engineers in our new office. Our website (spire.com/careers) is the best way for people to apply and get in the door. Damian Shields – Landscape, captures the mystery of light and darkness across the stunning landscapes of Scotland, to the Lake District and Cornwall. Damian grew up in Central Scotland and was intrigued by the views and drama that surrounded his childhood home. He says: “I spent a lot of time imagining what vistas and adventures lay beyond the hills, instilling a sense of wonder in the natural world. “Just as a portrait photographer uses the position and nature of a light source to change the way we perceive a person’s character, I’m captivated by the way the sun moves over and across the land, describing different facets of a landscape’s personality. I’m interested in the relationships of light to shadow, what is revealed and what is hidden. Mystery lives in the darkness and where the light falls is illumination.” Damian Shields was born in Toronto, Canada and moved to Scotland when he was three years old. He studied Fine Art Photography at The Glasgow School of Art, then headed by the renowned landscape photographer Thomas Joshua Cooper. From the GSA, Damian went on to study electronic publishing at the Glasgow College of Building and Printing, where he continued to develop his skills in digital imaging. He has worked as a professional retoucher and graphic artist in the media industry and is currently employed as a multimedia production journalist for The Herald. He has won many awards nationally and internationally for his work. Damian’s landscapes are for sale (open editions) and the exhibition will be open until 24th November. Skypark welcomes Bala Sport FAIRTRADE FOOTBALL CO-OP AIMS TO CHANGE THE GAME... 8 SKYLINE AUTUMN ‘15 N ew Skypark 3 tenants Bala Sport are taking on the big brands with an ethical alternative to the humble football. In this issue, joint managing director Angus Coull gives Skyline the low down on the newest addition to our business community. Angus says, “Bala Sport was officially launched in February this year and so far makes a range of three footballs; a bright kick-about ball, a training ball and a pro match ball. In the New Year there will be rugby balls and futsals, with netballs and volley balls introduced later in 2106. All of the balls are specially designed in Glasgow with Bala coming from the Gaelic word for ball. “All Bala Sport balls are Fairtrade certified which means that the company (actually a co-operative) ensures that their workers in the factories in Sialkot, Pakistan are paid a fair wage and work in safe conditions with access to union representation and that there’s no child labour. On top of that the workers benefit from an additional 10% Fairtrade Premium, which they invest in social development projects such as free healthcare and scholarships for their kids. Water purification plants have also been set up not just for the use of workers but the whole community. “With the recent backlash against FIFA due to allegations of corruption - and what’s going on with the building of stadiums in Qatar - there seems to be a lack of fairness in the sport. “That combined with people’s horror at the Rana Plaza garment factory disaster in Bangladesh still lingering we feel the time is right to change the game and allow people to make an ethical choice in sports kit,” he finishes. Bala Sport balls have been played with in the Supporters Direct Scotland Cup friendly with Stirling Albion and Hearts and fan owned FC United of Manchester playing in a friendly with Portuguese side Benfica. The hand stitched Bala Team and Pro balls are made and tested to the same standards as FIFA Inspected and FIFA Approved balls so the quality is good – prices range from £12 to £45 and can be purchased online through www.balasport. co.uk. Bala can also take orders for corporate branded balls. Bala Sport is a co-operative. Become a member/ investor for as little as £10 and help us make a difference. To find out more contact [email protected] Angus continues, “There’s an awakening among consumers that all in the supposed ‘beautiful game’ isn’t quite so nice. 9 Thunderbirds Are Go Magazine has now launched! DC Thomson launched the official Thunderbirds Are Go Magazine earlier this month – copies are available to buy in Café Deco, in Skypark 1. DC Thomson’s Editor-in-Chief of Boys’ Magazines, Gareth Whelan, said, “As a publisher, we’ve got a great deal of experience in the children’s magazine market and in launching licensed titles including WWE Kids and The Official Jacqueline Wilson Mag. This is a major new launch for us, and one we’re thoroughly enjoying working on.” Thunderbirds Are Go is a 36-page glossy magazine, based on the hit CITV show, which gives readers the chance to become a member of International Rescue and help the Tracy brothers in their fight against the evil Hood. From their hidden island base, the five Tracy Brothers pilot remarkable, cutting-edge Thunderbird vehicles from the depths of the oceans to the highest reaches of space – all for one purpose: to help others in need. International Rescue’s identities may not be widely known, but their heroism is legendary. Even the devious schemes of mysterious international criminal “The Hood” can’t weaken their resolve, or stop them from battling the dangers of the year 2060. Supported by mechanical genius Brains, stealthy operative Kayo, their jet-setting London agent Lady Penelope and her loyal driver Parker, Scott, Gordon, Virgil, John and Alan Tracy live for these three words: Thunderbirds Are Go. www.dcthomson.co.uk/thunderbirdsmagazine Grab a copy from Café Deco! The nursery will have a pop-up stand at the next ‘Site Social’ on Thursday 5th November - come along and meet the team! Four Seasons Joins the Asquith Family F our Seasons at Skypark and Spectrum are the most recent members of the Asquith family. We truly believe that Four Seasons and all of the childcare team within it will be a great fit for our family. Asquith is a group of 81 nurseries operating in Scotland, England and Wales and we pride ourselves on delivering the right outcomes for children. We are looking forward to starting a stunning refurbishment of the nursery due to be completed by the end of January 2016, so watch this space! In September the nursery held a ‘World of Rugby’ Open Day. This was a great opportunity to introduce the children to this international event we are currently hosting and also furthering their understanding of the world and our diverse culture. We were thrilled that Skypark was a finalist for the 2015 Scottish NMT awards for Individual Nursery of the Year 2015. In order to celebrate their success, every member of the team was invited to the award ceremony held at the Hilton in Glasgow. Although we did not win on this occasion, a fantastic night was had by all. To celebrate National Grandparent’s Day on Sunday 4th October, the nursery hosted a Grandparent’s tea party on Friday 11th October. They welcomed their special guests with delicious food whilst raising vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Skypark also turned their attention to art and design this month with our national ‘Art & Design’ Open Days. They have been finding out how art and design encourages children to express themselves, showcasing the children’s artistic skills. We are looking forward to the next Open Day on Saturday 14th November, where we will be celebrating our community and cultures. We hope to see you there. For further information on events this year at the nursery, please visit our website www.asquithnurseries.co.uk 11 9 £10k total for charity abseil! Corinne commented: “A huge thank you to Skypark’s tenants as the funds will go to help others like me who suffer life-changing physical trauma.” George Bowie, Clyde 1 presenter who accompanied Corinne on the abseil said: “Thanks to everyone that took part, for every penny raised goes directly to supporting vulnerable and disabled children in Glasgow and the west of Scotland.” 12 SKYLINE AUTUMN ‘15 13 9 14 SKYLINE AUTUMN ‘15 15 9 According to the 2015 Gallup Global Survey - only 13% of employees worlwide are engaged with their work FREE smART Business Workshops at Skypark If you’re looking for inspiring ways to win at work then book a FREE business workshop this Autumn with Anna Sundt. O ur resident physiotherapist Sue Simpson of Advance Physiotherapy Services, is offering Skypark tenants a package of discounts on various treatments that will have you fighting fit in no time. Snap up a Physio Offer! Sue Simpson, a therapist with over 30 years’ experience appreciates that it is not always easy to get away from the workplace so she decided to bring the clinic to the workplace! Frequently patients who attend with either recent injuries, restrictions of many years standing, tension, neuralgia, headaches and musculo-skeletal pain of any description (neck, back, shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle etc.) find lasting relief. Sue says, “I find that by using treatment techniques aimed at realigning the skeleton and relieving tension on soft tissue (muscles, nerves and ligaments), results are often faster and more effective than many of the more traditional approaches, that often incorporate a symptom-based approach, rather than aiming directly at the cause of the symptoms. “When you book an appointment you can expect to have a full body alignment check, followed by an assessment of your problem. Physical assessment and treatment are closely linked, so generally your first full appointment is also your first full treatment session.” Sue also has extensive experience in work-place risk assessments including the assessment of Display Screen Equipment (DSE) / Chair assessment / Disability Access. If those are required please contact her directly to discuss details and relevant fees.
