Nov 8 Sat The Smokehouse – Dinner Run to Burbank – Leave Chuy’s at 5 PM Established in 1946, The SmokeHouse was built at the end of WWII and is one of the few L.A. restaurants of that era to survive to today. It has the decor and aura of a different age and has grown steadily with the growth of the movie industry and through word of mouth. “…what more can you say about the garlic bread other than that it’s the best on the planet!” Nov 20 Thur Club Social – Sisley Italian Kitchen in the Valencia Town Center Mall. Sisley Italian Kitchen features healthy Italian food, with an emphasis on lowfat and low-cholesterol dishes. Of course, one bite of Sisley's tiramisu will convince people to throw their diet out the window for the moment. Start time is 6:00 PM Nov 27 Thur Thanksgiving – At your house! Thanksgiving is a particularly American holiday. The word evokes images of football, family reunions, roasted turkey with stuffing, pumpkin pie and, of course, the Pilgrims and Wampanoag and even a Corvette Cruise before having seconds. Nov 29 Sat Festival of Lights Run to Riverside Mission Inn – Leave Valencia 1 PM. The Riverside Festival of Lights allows everyone – even Corvette owners - to be charged with wonder and anticipation of the magic of the holidays. Don’t miss your opportunity to be part of this wonderful Riverside tradition. 2 Coming up on Saturday, November 29th THE MISSION INN HOTEL RIVERSIDE CALIFORNIA'S NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK Enjoy more than 4 million dazzling holiday lights, appearances by Santa Claus, the world’s largest manmade mistletoe measuring 12’ x 8’, horse-drawn carriage rides, freshly fallen snow, an elaborately decorated Christmas tree in the hotel lobby and delectable holiday confections at the original famous Casey’s Cupcakes located at The Inn. The Mission Inn’s Festival of Lights is an annual gift to the community from property Owners Duane and Kelly Roberts who saved the historic landmark from destruction in 1992. The City of Riverside has adopted The Mission Inn’s Festival of Lights as a citywide initiative with a vision of a Dickensian holiday spectacle featuring lights and decorations throughout downtown Riverside, an outdoor ice-skating rink on the Main Street pedestrian mall, holiday vendors and family-friendly entertainment. REMINDER 3 4 From the Driver’s Seat October 2014 President’s Message When you jump in the driver’s seat, and take control of the vehicle you once were just riding in, you assume that the finely tuned machine will perform smoothly down the road. Usually it does, but at some point, you get a rough idle, maybe a backfire, or a sound that makes you pull over and look at what’s going on with your pride and joy. Taking the wheel of our club was no different, and the realization that our club needs a tune up made me mentally pull over to take a closer look at why our club is experiencing a drop in the performance curve. We idle well at attending club meetings, run smoothly when going on club events, but stall out when the performance is expected. The performance I refer to is our clubs commitment to the community, and more specifically, our commitment to the charity that our members voted to support during the year. The membership elected to support the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center, and in doing so, we give back to our community, but as of this newsletter, our performance curve is poor. Correct that, our performance curve is none. When I became president, I mentioned that our club needs to focus on not just us as a club, but us and our involvement in the community. The fact that a club of 100 Corvette owners who voted to support the senior center, to date has only collected $50.00, is embarrassing. If we can’t do better than $.50 per member, then maybe we should do nothing at all. How can we as members of a 40 year old car club face anyone in the community and tell them how dedicated our club is to community involvement and charitable support? Every year, our club has donated a truckload of food for the “Food Pantry” at our annual Christmas Party, and that goes to feeding many needy people in our home community. This has been a special, once a year, contribution, and it’s truly appreciated. It is done in the Christmas Spirit, and we will continue that endeavor as a completely separate Christmas gift from the Santa Clarita Valley Corvette Club members. Over the past several years, a smaller number of club members has participated in the Gift Exchange at the Annual Christmas Party. While fun for some, the exchange somewhat slows the momentum of the party. This year, in lieu of the Christmas Gift Exchange, the Board of Directors elected to forego the exchange and is asking each member attending to make a monetary contribution in a sealed envelope and place it in a collection box for the Senior Center. There was no set amount requested, but as in the past with the gift exchange, the gift price was a gift valued at $25.00 or more. That value equates to just under $2.10 per month. If every member (all 100 of us) contributed the $2.10 per month for one year, we would be giving the charity we voted to support, a minimum of $2,500.00 for the year. After receiving feedback regarding the Board’s Decision, I had to stop and think. Yes, we do support the community with the once a year food donation, and yes that is a sizable gift given to the community. But on the other hand, our club made a commitment, and elected to support of the senior center this year. Let’s stand behind our commitment. Donation to the Senior Center is not meant to detract from the Food Pantry giving. Linda Butler has been the driving force behind the Food Pantry collection each year and she has been extremely successful in that effort and on behalf of our club. I thank her profusely and hope you will support Deana Shaver this year as she continues the tradition. Grizzly Café Oct 12th Story: Dwight McDonald Photos: Dwight McDonald and Ron Bergmann You couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day to take your Corvette for a drive through the mountains, and have a relaxing breakfast in Wrightwood, at the Grizzly Café. Eleven thundering Corvettes, correction, ten thundering Corvettes, and one “I think I can, I think I can” vintage Corvette assembled at Denny’s on Sand Canyon, at 8 AM and fifteen minutes later we were on our way. Clint Milteer and his co-pilot Christen briefed the eager crowd of wayward travelers, and then we were doing the Willie Nelson “On the Road Again.” The weather was clear and sunny, and the road conditions were outstanding. No traffic, except for an occasional bicyclist or two; clean, crisp air and breathtaking views of the back roads, and canyons. The drive was perfect for the performance enthusiast, the leisure driver, and the one “are you kidding me” participant, but all in all, it was fantastic. A stop at the “Newcome’s Ranch” restaurant, for the break that refreshes, and for further instruction from Clint about the road ahead. Fifteen minutes rest, stretched legs, and a few clean windshields later, we were rolling through the canyon. Traffic changed as we progressed. Motorcyclists were like gnats, they came out of nowhere, buzzed around you, and then they were gone like the wind. The caravan of shiny Corvettes drove to a vista that overlooked a canyon as far as the eye could see, which made for a great “Kodak moment”. 10 After a few moments of posing for a photo op and watching more motorcycles round the curve at 80 mph, our group was on its way to the Grizzly Café. Upon arrival, we were met by one of the café employees who had reserved front row parking for our cars, and a viewing location for all the crotch rocket, and two-wheeled riders to view the pride of General Motors. Yes, they swarmed the cars, looked, took pictures, and asked many questions. You would have thought that they had never seen a Corvette before. The hungry caravaners were taken to a reserved patio to unwind in the cool mountain air, order, and indulge in great conversation. The location was gorgeous, the food outstanding, and the comradery was unexcelled. After the meal and socializing, a drive to Charlie Brown’s in Littlerock was the tail end of a fun driving adventure. Some stopped, and some drove on, but either way, it was a great day. Those who missed the run, missed a great time, but don’t worry, next year we’ll have the 6th annual Wrightwood run to the Grizzly Café. 11 Taste of the Town – Rattlers Oct 16th Story: Mike Woodings Photos: Dwight McDonald This was another great call by the Activities Team to hold our Social/Taste-of-the Town at Rattler’s on Rib Night. Looks like our Corvette people concurred too with another successful turnout of 38 members and visitors enjoying the patio for our monthly night out The great fall weather was a plus and many Corvettes were out with their owners for the evening drive. For 25 years, Rattler’s Bar B Que has been a favorite BBQ restaurant for many Santa Clarita families. From slowly cooked and tender mesquite BBQ tri tip, chicken & ribs to a variety of deliciously fresh salads and more, you are sure to get an outstanding meal. Thanks to our Activities people for keeping us out of the kitchen again and to the Rattler’s staff for the great service and delicious BBQ! If Italian is your choice, join us at our next Taste of the Town at Sisley Italian Kitchen in November. Remember, you’ve got to eat, so why not with your friends? You never know who will show up! 12 Robinson Ranch – Rocktoberfest Oct 25th Story: Dwight McDonald Photos: Janene McDonald and Ron Bergmann Rocktoberfest was the place to be on Saturday, the 25th of October. Twenty-one Club Members arrived at Robinson Ranch at 7:00 PM, some in costume and some looking like they needed to be, but it really didn’t matter. The party began when we arrived, and it never ended. The refreshments and meal were great and the G3 band was phenomenal. The management almost had to turn the lights out to get us out of the building. Two of our newest members pulled up in costume, dressed as New 2015 C7 Corvette owners. Yep, Ron and Joyce Bergmann arrived in a three-day old 2015 Night Race Blue Coupe! (Night-time view) To say that everyone had a good time would be a major understatement. Pat Van Patten looked like she had just stepped out of Woodstock. Sheila Percivalle could have passed as a dancer from the “Whiskey A Go Go” on Sunset Strip. Joyce Bergmann could have been Olivia NewtonJohn’s double from “Grease”. Deana Shaver was a copy of Sandra Dee in her poodle skirt and blouse and husband Ed Shaver could have been a music producer or a pimp. We’re really not sure which, but it didn’t matter, as he fit the description for either. 13 As the night progressed, the band ratcheted up the entertainment, the “refreshments” soaked in and the crowd got into the mood to party. You know it was a happening thing when even Johnny Percivalle and Ed Shaver were out on the dance floor…no, not together! When it came time to judge the costumes, Deana Shaver and Sheila Percivalle paired up as a team. There were 12 pairs competing and it boiled down to two couples. The decibel meter for the first couple hit 94, but Deanna & Sheila hit the 104 mark. Yes, boys and girls, those two hotties still got it! Those who missed this event really missed a fun time. Moira Moe with a little help from her personal friend “Jackie D” got Jeff Hernandez up shake his booty on the dance floor. Even Bob Siecke, bum knee and all, stood up and moved what he could. Hopefully, next year Robinson Ranch will put this event on again, because it’s something you don’t want to miss. Many thanks go to Deana Shaver who got us fired up about this event, and made the evening an event to remember. 14 C7 Update Courtesy of: TRACK, MEET, STREET Dominant on legendary racetracks around the world, Corvette was the mostawarded racing nameplate in the American Le Mans Series and a seventime winner at 24 Hours of Le Mans. The next generation C7.R race car debuted this season in the new TUDOR United SportsCar Championship series. The C7.R and the 2015 Corvette Z06 share unprecedented levels of engineering and components including chassis architecture, engine technologies and aerodynamic strategies. Corvette Z06 The all-new Z06 is the best example yet of the technology transfer between racing and production Corvettes. First, engineers took what they learned on the Corvette Racing C6.R and applied that knowledge to the 2014 Corvette Stingray. Then, using the Stingray as a foundation, the Z06 and C7.R were codeveloped to push the envelope of performance on the street and the track. What are you going to do with it?” TractionControlOff: I’ve gotten, “You must get 10 mpg!” and, “How many cylinders does it have? Four or six?” Txbobcat: During the Cash for Clunkers thing, a gal in a new Ford Expedition pulls up next to my Corvette while my convertible top is down. She asks me, “Are you not ashamed to be driving a gas guzzler like that when the rest of us are trying to conserve gas? I said, “I bet you are getting close to 12 mpg aren’t you? Well, uppity I get 26 mpg, so who should be ashamed here?” MrJlr: What kind of car is that? Does that have the HEMI? flyeri: After answering that my car is a Corvette, I was asked if Corvette made a truck. Tom400CFI: My wife, son and I were participating in a Corvette Club of Utah “Cruisin’ to the Tetons” cruise. I drove my C6, and my wife drove her Dodge Stealth R/T Twin Turbo. At one of the stops, a woman who is part of the Corvette Club of Utah pointed at the Stealth and asked my wife and me, “When did they make a four-seat Corvette?” 19 1955 Corvette Ad 20 SCVCC Officers 2013 / 2014 Office Name Telephone PRESIDENT Dwight McDonald 661-212-0158 [email protected] VICE-PRESIDENT/ PUBLICITY Jim Fulmer 661-295-0681 [email protected] SECRETARY Dan Clarkson 661-993-6266 [email protected] TREASURER Elke Couples 661-799-3900 [email protected] QUARTERMASTER Deana Shaver 805-402-8160 [email protected] MEMBERSHIP Judy Woodings 661-212-2889 [email protected] Mark Ware 661-993-8128 [email protected] Bob Siecke 805-341-1660 [email protected] Clint Milteer 661-510-0630 [email protected] Bev Bottoms 818-262-9828 [email protected] Janene McDonald 661-309-0308 [email protected] Tony Munshi 661-313-3604 [email protected] NEWSLETTER EDITOR Mike Woodings 661-964-8168 [email protected] WEBMASTER Debi Clarkson ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER Email address [email protected] 21 Warning!!! 22 Testimonial Page I had TWO more good visits to Santa Paula. Went home. On the way my TIRE MONITOR light came on. Like most of us I ignored it. It comes and goes th hard bumps in the road. BUT!!!!!!!! After hearing Dwight talk about his trip and what happened when his Monitor light came on, I decided to go back to the Dealer and have it checked out. So Oct.3rd, Visit#2-Got there EARLY so I stopped to get something to eat. Brought the food with me and sat in the street at the driveway waiting for the gate to be unlocked. Someone opened it before I finished eating. So I drove up to the office, parked, and waited for them to Open. It was now 6:30-they open at 7:00 BUT the owner came out and said "Let's get you started!!!" WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WENT SOME PLACE AND THEY OPENED EARLY JUST TO HELP YOU?????? I don’t know if you noticed, but our meetings and events are attracting quite a number of new Corvette people, some of whom are first-time ‘Vette owners. At the same time, quite a few of our long-time members have been missing the fun. I hope all of you “old-timers” get a chance to join us more often and meet the “newbies”.
