A Mess of Judges: Sermon Series begins June 10
When you read through the book of Judges, the stories may cause you to turn
towards God or run the other way. Why are these all-too-human stories here and
what can they tell us about God and what it means to be fully human? Sometimes,
in the middle of these stories, I find myself having to dig deep for evidence of grace.
Frederick Buechner, in the book Peculiar Treasures, discusses a song Deborah sings and says, “It is a
wonderful song, full of blood and thunder with a lot of hair-raising bitter jibes at the end.”
The weekend of the 10th we look at Deborah (an early feminist?) in a sermon “Hear Me Roar!”
Gideon is the focus on the 17th in a sermon “Superstar on the Outside.”
Week three of the series, on the 24th, is a story that cautions us about the promises we make (and the
priorities we set) as we look at chapters 11 & 12 in a sermon about “Jepthah Watch Your Promises.”
Finally, on July 1, we’ll look at Judges 13-16 and the story of Samson. The title of the sermon? “Hairy and
Clueless.”
We are convinced that in the middle of these stories which appear to be “reality tv” at its worst, God has a word
for us. Invite a friend to join you in worship for A Mess of Judges.
All About Community Begins July 8
How do we live together in community as apprentices of Jesus? God has chosen the community of the church
as an on-going laboratory where we learn how to love, forgive, serve, and live justly.
We’ve often gotten it wrong, emphasizing personal faith over social justice or vice versa. Churches tend to
choose either spiritual formation or community engagement.
There is a better way!
We begin a series of messages on community titled Living with Others. We begin July 8. We’ll explore what it
would mean to follow the Spirit, extend grace, and demonstrate love.
If you want to prepare your heart and soul for this journey you might want to buy James Bryan Smith’s book
The Good and Beautiful Community (IVP).

JUST A THOUGHT OR TWO...
by Rev. Mark Fenstermacher, Lead Pastor
“THE GUEST IN THE HALLWAY”
The weekend of May 20 was a
rich day in the life of this Jesus
community. Our congregation,
mentors, family, and friends
gathered around youth and adults who were joining First/
The Open Door. The services were packed with good things:
baptisms, youth leading worship, special music, prayers, great
hymns…all sorts of good.
In the hallway I passed a young guy who looked like he might
be in his early 20’s. He was dressed the way I would like to
have been dressed: blue jeans, an un-tucked shirt, tennis
shoes. When I passed him the first time -on my way to the
sanctuary for a walk through of confirmation- I assumed he
was with one of the families here with the confirmands.
The second time I passed him he was still standing there,
hands jammed in his pockets, looking a bit disconnected. I
stopped. I asked if I could help him and I introduced myself.
He told me his name. He said a friend had talked to him about
the church and he thought he might try worship here. “When
are the services?” he asked. So I explained our schedule and
told him how glad I was that he was here. I told him where the
coffee and tea would be. Then, I headed on down the hall to
my office.
I did okay with my welcome, I guess, but I could have done
better. I should have done better. I could have asked if I could
walk him down the hall, introduce him to one of our friendly
saints, and made sure he was “connected” with someone who
could answer his questions and make sure he was okay.
and delicious – our very best. I see FUMC/The Open Door
members serving as sponsors, helping to lead tours of the
building, etc.
Pastor Jen and Pastor Mary, a few weeks ago, developed a list
of ways each of us can get involved. That list includes being
a part of the Welcome Team at the Sanctuary and The Open
Door. That list includes helping to staff the welcome tables and
helping with the monthly “First Connections Gathering.”
Kate Walker, a retired UM pastor and District Superintendent,
bumped into me at the recent graduation ceremonies at
Garrett-Evangelical. She said she had attended a seminar
with people from Disney. Everyone at Disney is seen as -and
treated as- a guest.
If you love people and know how to smile, I want to encourage
you to step up this Summer when you are given a chance to
be a part of one of our Connect Teams. (In coming columns
we will look at the two other priorities and the importance of
laity stepping up to help us Grow in Faith (discipleship steps)
and/or Serve.
These are what we are about in this season of our life:
CONNECT......GROW......SERVE
Be praying because God is calling each one of us to make it
happen.
It was a great weekend here on the 20th! And yet I keep
thinking about the guest in the hallway. I wonder if he’ll be back
this Sunday?
One of our priorities this year (every year?) is to Connect
people to God, to this community, and to one another. We
believe God is calling us to be a community where everyone
experiences a gracious and loving welcome.
In Christ...Mark
The Bible says when we welcome a stranger we may actually
be welcoming an angel. Jesus, in Matthew 25:35, makes it
clear how important it is that we receive the stranger.
As Pastor Jen Stuelpe Gibbs heads up the road to Meridian
Street, I am so thankful for her faithful, loving, creative
leadership here at First. It has been a joy serving with her and
I know the Kingdom of God will be stronger wherever she is
serving. I am so thankful we have all had this chapter together.
What would have to happen for visitors to know they are
welcome from the time they get out of their car in our parking
lot, approach the doors, walk through the halls, find their way to
the coffee area, and enter the sanctuary? How will YOU play
a role in this network of radical hospitality?
I see people out in the parking lot smiling and offering to help
carry diaper bags. I see people at our doors opening them
with a smile. I see people staffing the Welcome Center in
the Atrium, one at the PDO entrance, and another inside the
Washington Street entrance. I see people in the sanctuary
looking out for new faces in a particular area of the sanctuary.
I see refreshments during the fellowship time that are fresh

SAYING GOODBYE TO A FRIEND & HELLO TO A
FRIEND
As she heads north there is another pastor, Stacee Fischer
Gehring, who will soon be headed south. As God has blessed
us with Jen (and Mary!) so God is about to bless us in a great
way through the life and ministry of Pastor Stacee. I know you
will go out of your way to bless both of these friends. As much
as I tell myself moving is a part of life, I know this isn’t easy on
us all – even when it is right and good.
Thanks, Jen & Jeremiah. Welcome, Stacee & Jeff.

IF YOU DON’T TELL US, WE WON’T KNOW
If you or a family member needs a visit or a phone call,
you will need to let someone from First know that. We
often hear after the fact that someone has been in special
need and we never knew. Please send us a note or speak
to someone in the church office or use the emergency
contact number and let us know. We want to be there
when you need us, but we cannot do that if we don’t know.

Farewell for Musicians
It is with grateful hearts that
we extend our
thanks to the
talented musicians God has
blessed us with
who are moving
on from FUMC
this summer.
Rosie Banova has been the Wesley
Choir Accompanist for nearly 6 years
and has led the First Up service in
worship faithfully. Rosie has received
her doctorate and will be leaving us
to teach piano in China.
Michelle Johanningmeier has been
the Children’s Choir Director and
Childcare Coordinator for the past
year and has been able to combine
her love for music, children and her
faith into a beautiful package. We
have been so blessed by her ministry
here and will miss her as she moves
with her husband, Cory, to San Franscisco as he furthers his law career.
Michael Schwartzkopf has been
the Chancel Choir Director for the
past 17 years. We have appreciated
the passion he brings to this special
music ministry and we are sad to see
him go. We wish him and his wife
Marilyn all the best in their retirement.
Joel Thoreson has been the Children’s Choir Accompanist for nearly 4
years, as well as a dedicated member of the worship team at The Open
Door. Joel and his wife have graduated from IU and will be moving to
Vancouver, WA.
Please continue to uphold these
members in your prayers as they follow God’s pathway for their future. As
well, pray for, look for and welcome
those who will be filling these positions in the fall.

STAFF PARISH RELATIONS
COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES HIRING OF
GWYN RICHARDS
AS DIRECTOR OF CHANCEL CHOIR
We are pleased to announce the addition of Gwyn Richards
to our ministry team at First United Methodist Church as
Director of the Chancel Choir. The first Sunday Gwyn will be
directing the Chancel Choir will be Sunday, June 3.
Gwyn serves as Dean of the Jacob’s School of Music at
Indiana University. He has held that position since July, 2001.
Prior to that time, he was Associate Dean at the University
of Southern California. Gwyn’s training is in choral conducting. As a student he sang in the Chancel Choir at First United
Methodist Church in Bloomington so Gwyn’s ties to FUMCB
go back a long way.
When Gwyn speaks about his new role at First, it is clear that
this step is in response to a calling to serve God, the church
and its mission, and to help this outstanding choir serve as
an integral part of our worship life. The music of the choir is
not simply about performance, but in a deep way it is always
about worship and engaging the people of God in an encounter with the living God.
Gwyn was born in Wales into the home of a Welsh pastor.
He came to the United States as a young child, was raised in
New York and suburban Chicago, and has worked in higher
education at Montana State, McGill University, Rice University, Southern California, and IU. Gwyn has a degree in choral
conducting from the University of Michigan. He resides in
Bloomington with his wife, Barbara. They have two daughters,
Megan and Jillian.
We invite you to surround these friends with your prayers as
they begin to serve Christ in the areas of music and worship.
Also, if you have considered singing in the Chancel Choir
(or singing in the
Wesley Choir or
playing with the
handbell choir)
we would invite
you to offer your
musical gifts
to this growing
music ministry.
Gwyn is already
issuing invitations
for others to join
our Chancel Choir
in leading worship
and making great
music – join them!

JUBILEE COLLEGE AND YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY
It has been an incredible nine months since our first Jubilee back in August…nine months filled with stories of God moving in the lives of students
and young adults. Stories about God replacing narratives of brokenness
and loneliness with love, hope, forgiveness, and renewal.
Stories about students whose parents are going through divorce, and the
isolation, and loneliness, abandonment, and loss, and theological struggles
that come with that. Then those students come together in small groups at
Jubilee and suddenly they realize they’re not alone anymore.
Stories about students who have been to IU for years, and somehow in the midst of 40,000 students
they’ve always felt lost, and have never found a place to call home. And then they find Jubilee…an accepting and loving Christ-centered community.
One particular story about a student started experiencing a lot of anxiety which led to a lack of sleep, and
then alcohol. But then something really amazing happened! They shared with members of their small
group what was going on, and those students spent the night at their house during those sleepless nights
and would call during the day, and took them out to lunch. We connected the student to our pastors, and
found a local AA group, a sponsor, and counseling services through IU. And the student was able to feel
love and hope, and is still in school and doing well.
We’ve all had these rough times in our lives…times when we have to lean into God and into a community
for support. And because of Jubilee – that community was there, and a situation that could have turned
out as just another sad statistic was turned into an amazing story of resurrection.
In the midst of these incredible stories, and in the midst of growth from 18 students on our first Wednesday to 47 students a couple of weeks ago, we’ve also been faced with the reality that God might have bigger things in store for Jubilee than we ever would have initially dreamed. We’ve been thinking and praying
about how to be faithful to where God is calling us while also being faithful to the intimate community and
relationships that make Jubilee so special.
We’ve developed a vision of 3 pictures of where we’d like to head…of what it might look like to grow well
as a Christ-centered community for young adults:
The first picture is Intentional Christ-centered Living which might sound intense but is really as simple as
overseeing a couple of houses that students could rent from us and live together in community…perhaps
with a grad student or young adult that we sponsor to live with the students as a house leader who disciples and leads bible studies. The awesome thing about living in houses together is it transforms Jubilee
from something that happens once or twice a week to something that happens everyday.
The second picture is a Christ-centered Campus. We think it’s important to move towards having a parttime or full-time staff member whose primary office space would be the campuses of IU and Ivy Tech…
to meet with our current students where they’re at, as well as reaching out and building relationships with
new students, co-coordinating and leading small groups and bible studies on and off campus, and doing
campus outreach.
The third picture is Christ-centered Leadership Development. We believe developing a healthy student
internship program with paid and unpaid interns is a crucial piece of how Jubilee will be able to grow well.
These interns would be students who can help with day to day operations of Jubilee but even more important, they can experience what it’s like to do ministry…to be a part of the church rather then just going to
church.

OUTREACH
June Outreach Spotlight:
Native American Ministries
Eighty years ago, Methodists arrived in Dulac, La., to bring the gospel and education to the Houma Indians.
Some Native Americans became Methodists and accepted leadership roles in the community. In the 1980s, it
became obvious the community’s poorest were the last to hear of opportunities for preschoolers in the public
system. Because spaces were limited, some of the neediest children were left out. My spouse, Zoeanna Billiot
Verret, started a preschool for these students. Native American Ministries Sunday offering has supported the
efforts of Clanton Chapel Christian Preschool for many years.
Preschool children at Clanton Chapel. In the preschool, committed teachers work with 15 to 22 students per
day. The program is free to our impoverished community. Two Clanton Chapel teachers attended the segregated Indian schools and well as a school started by Wilhemina Hooper, a dedicated Methodist who came to
Dulac in 1932 for the summer but remained because she heard God’s call. Many of our former preschoolers
have graduated from high school and college.
One Desert Storm soldier came back before his second deployment to thank the preschool and “Miss Zoe” for
giving him a great start. Many visit just to say, “I will never forget how you all gave me such a caring way of
learning.” One of our graduates may teach on the college level. Today the Native Americans of Dulac, once
considered outcasts, teach children of many colors.

July Outreach Spotlight:
FUMC Wednesday Pantry
In November of this year, the FUMC Wednesday Food Pantry will complete 20 years of serving those in
our community in need of food assistance. From the very beginning the Wednesday Food Pantry has been
about much more than food. It is community; in fact, it is many communities. There are the communities of
volunteers, of guests, of supporters such as St. Paul's Catholic Center, of the Kenda Webb Covenant Disciple
group, and many more including all of the members of First United Methodist Church who offer the only
financial support the Pantry has as well as offerings of canned goods and grocery sacks.
Just about every week, one of our guests prepares some special sweet bread for the volunteers. He likes to
bake, he likes to share his goodies, and he shares his friendship with the volunteers. Another guest brightened
the holiday season by dressing in a Santa suit. Sometimes, people who no longer need the Pantry's
assistance just stop by to say hi to all of us. Recently a guest who is experiencing homelessness came for the
food we offer to those without kitchens. One of our volunteers greeted him by calling him sir. He responded by
thanking her for calling him sir. He said he didn't deserve any respect. The volunteer told him that everyone
deserves respect - something the volunteers offer to each and every guest each and every week of the year.
The FUMC Wednesday Pantry has nurtured a large community offering respect, love, and compassion.
Due to the economic distresses we have experienced since 2008, we have welcomed increasing numbers of
guests to our community - some come only for help one time. Some come sporadically when funds just cannot
stretch to include purchasing adequate food. Some need more regular assistance as they are on disability,
been bankrupted by huge health bills, have very small social security checks, etc. Your generosity over the
years has allowed us to offer assistance and your continued generosity will enable us to continue to offer
assistance to new persons finding themselves in financial straits as well as cover the Pantry's own increasing
costs for food. Please give generously so that others may eat. Be a part of a huge community of caring,
compassionate, loving people.

SUMMER TRAVELS = NO CHURCH,
BUT IS DOESN’T NEED TO MEAN NO GOD!!!
Children’s Ministries is pleased to offer two GREAT resources for summer worship to families who will
be travelling or vacationing and unable to attend church on a regular basis during the summer!
In fact, all families are welcome to these two fun and meaningful resources while supplies last!
1st Resource:
Prayer Bins
Pick up a bin (one per family) from the church office during the week or in all three worship venues on Sundays
during the summer months (while supplies last).
Each small bin is packed with miniature items that remind us to pray for certain things (for example: a red and
white item to remind us to pray for the IU community, that truth will be taught and wisdom for educators or the
silhouette of a child to remind us to pray for orphans and foster children finding peace in a forever family).
Included is a list of what the items represent, along with space for you to add your own prayers items. They
may be pictures of family and friends, business cards or a special souvenir of a place you visit, reminding you
to pray for those people and communities.
Bring the bin along with you on vacation or to the lake and take a moment each day (at breakfast, dinner,
bedtime, etc.) to choose an item and pray as a family.
2nd Resource:
Family Prayer Journal
Pick up a family prayer journal (you may want to pick up one per child) from the church office during the week
or in all three worship venues on Sundays during the summer months (while supplies last).
The journal, filled with short devotions, fun activities and interesting tidbits about prayer, will lead you through
14 days that can be completed during a two week period or sporadically over the summer.
It is our hope that these resources will keep your kids connected to their faith through the
summer months while they may not be as connected to our actual church building.
We look forward to hearing how you were able to use these resources to enrich your
summer experiences!
VBS Fundraising – A huge round of thanks to those who sponsored a child to attend VBS. With your generosity we were
able to sponsor 76 children. Please be in prayer for those that
God will be sending our way the second week of June.

Youth Mission Trip
The Jr. and Sr. High Youth Groups are heading to New Orleans this summer for a mission trip with the
Epworth Project. We will be leaving early Sunday morning on July 22 and returning Sunday evening on July
29. Sunday, July 15, will be our send-off Sunday and we’d love to have you join us at the Open Door to send
us off! We will be working primarily with single parent families helping not only to rebuild and restore their
homes and yards, but also helping them rebuild and restore their lives and making sure they know they are
loved and not forgotten. We will be the hands and feet of Christ and we trust that Christ will move in and
through us in the lives of the families we serve as well as their greater communities.
In addition to our experience helping, serving, and loving families in New Orleans, it will also have a
tremendously positive effect on the youth who are able to participate. From year to year, mission trips
inevitably end up as the highlight of almost every youth’s experience. They learn that the world is more
complex then they ever could have imagined. They learn compassion and empathy. They learn people’s
stories and names. They learn grace and forgiveness. They learn what it means to follow Christ. They learn
not to take all of the ways in which they are blessed for granted. They learn not to ride in the same van as
the guy who loves gas station bean burritos. They learn leadership. They learn discipline and hard work.
They learn to love better. They learn what it means to be the church.
If you would like to financially support our trip, checks can be made out to FUMC with “Youth Mission Trip”
on the memo line. We would also greatly appreciate your prayers as we serve in the cool and comfortable
climate of New Orleans in July.
Those currently signed up for the trip are:
Sr. High: Joey Ackerman, Ellie Calkins, Jacob Cantrell, Caitlyn Chang, Scott Emmons, Thorin Danielsen,
Ryan Ferrell, Morgan and Annie Gillard, Ethan and Emma Hamilton, Billy and Katie Head, Kevin Lettelleir,
JC Lukens, Megan Muzii, Daniel Morgan, Morgan Newman, Delaney Nichols, Colin Shassberger, Hannah
Shirley, Jack and Sam Sills, Sydney Spencer, and Hannah Taylor. Chaperones include Lisa Hamilton,
Martha Moore, Dave Calkins, and Darren Wright.
Jr. High: Brock Brown, Forrest Brown, Seth Cantrell, Ashley Clark, Brian Emmons, Sam Lonnberg,
Nathaniel Floyd, Mikayla Muzii, David Norris, Max Richter, Benton Schultz, and Luke Tucker. Chaperones
include Marci Becker and Melissa Sawyer.
Youth Summer Sunday School
There is no Sr. High or Jr. High Youth Sunday School during the summer. Youth Sunday school will end
Sunday, May 20, and will restart Sunday, August 19. Families are invited to attend any of our 3 summer
services together and we encourage you to take time after the service to discuss it together as a family!
Summer Sr. High Youth Schedule
Darren will be going on a road trip out West this summer with his wife which means we will NOT have Sunday
night youth group Sunday, June 10, 17, 24, or July 1. Tom Shriver, one of our awesome Jubilee interns and
the youth director for Unity Chapel, will be running some super low key but incredible Wednesday night
activities on June 13 & 27 and I would encourage everyone to come and join Tom for a couple evenings of
awesomeness! Youth group will start back up on its normal schedule on Sunday, July 8 (5:30-7:30 pm)!
Summer Jr. High Youth Schedule
The Jr. High youth group will continue through the month of June on Sunday nights as usual (5:30-7:30 pm)
and conclude on July 15 with the final youth group night of the summer before the New Orleans mission trip
happens and David and his wife Laura start to have their hands full being new parents!

O
n Saturday, April 28, the Wesley Choir and friends
from FUMC performed the 6th Annual Zachary Novak Scholarship concert in the Great Hall. Along with the
Wesley Choir and soloists Ashley Stone and Kelly Kruse,
the program featured FUMC’s octet A Men, singing a
variety of barbershop and Beatles classics, Rosie Banova
and Charles Webb on piano, the Joyful Ringers, and the
Children’s Choir. Performing varied selections including
chant, pop tunes, and modern gospel, the music was wellappreciated by all in attendance. Attendees and donors
overfilled the Great Hall, with sets of extra chairs being
wheeled into the room just before the concert began. With
Dan and Misty Novak in attendance, the concert raised
almost $2,000 towards the Zachary Novak Memorial Scholarship. This money will be used to support upand-coming local musicians in the Bloomington area in 2012.
