Memory Garden a Success!
This past summer, the Class of 2010 committed countless hours to fulfilling
a vision that was put into motion more than 4 years ago. The MHS
Memory Garden was created in honor and memory of those staff, students
and teachers who have left behind a legacy at Merrillville High School. The
garden is situated just outside main entrance ‘A’ of the high school and will
be dedicated next month when the Class of 2011 completes the fourth and
final Phase of this endeavor. Border Magic of Northwest Indiana will install
a stamped border along the walkway before winter arrives and our students
will finalize the landscaping. Thanks again to all of the students who
continue to volunteer to maintain the garden, and to those sponsors
including Mr. Hofer, Ms. Boyle, and Mrs. Lopez for their time and
commitment to our kids. The combined talents, shed tears, and individual
efforts demonstrate that it is the people of this school and community who
create the “Merrillville Advantage”!
What is K-12 DATAMINE?
k12datamine is a web-based program that gives personalized student information, such as
demographics, learning trends, testing data, student interests, learning preferences, and much more!
k12datamine is available to parents on the internet; allowing instant, but secured access. All users must
have a unique and confidential password to access the site and view their child’s grades. Parents should
see their child’s guidance counselor for information about their password and account information.

What is Positive Behavioral
Interventions and Supports?
"Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports” (PBIS) is a proactive
systems approach for creating and maintaining safe and effective
learning environments in schools, and ensuring that all students have
the social/emotional skills needed to ensure their success at school
and beyond."
In 1872 a teacher’s preparation for classroom instruction included
whittling “nibs” to the “individual taste of the pupils” and bringing a
bucket of water and a scuttle of coal for the day’s session. Grades 1-8
were in the same classroom, memorization was “learning” and
discipline took the form of corporal punishment or humiliation.
Today’s teachers face similar, yet different challenges. Diversity,
pacing guides, standardized testing, differentiation, safety and
discipline are everyday concerns. How we address these concerns has
veered from the traditional punishment mode to a preventative
system based on research and the science of behavior.
In many cases, problem student behavior is an indicator of academic
frustration. Nationally, schools are using the Positive Behavior
Intervention and Support (PBIS) framework to develop strategies for
academic
as well as behavior issues when
problem behavior occurs. States
such as Iowa, Michigan and Illinois
are pairing with Response To
Intervention (RTI) and students at
all levels of the academic
spectrum have shown even
greater
improvement
on
standardized tests!
Help Your Child Study!
There’s no one best way to study. Some children need absolute peace
and quiet so they can concentrate. Others can work with music playing in
the background. Researchers have found that, for some students, soft
music can actually help concentration and memory. Music with no
words, at about 60 beats per minute, seems to promote the best learning.
Let your child experiment to find out what works best for her.
There is one thing on which all researchers agree: No one can study
effectively with the TV on. Eyes need to focus on what they’re reading.
Brains need to be paying attention to what’s on the page—not what’s on
the screen. So when it’s time for studying, turn off the TV.
Here are a few more things you can do:
Protect your child’s study time. That means, in addition to no
TV, no phone calls, no visits from friends and no
interruptions from you.
Work on your own projects nearby as your child does her
homework. You can pay bills, write letters or read a book.
You’ll send a message to your child that you think
homework time is important.
Offer advice if your child needs help, but resist the impulse to do
her homework for her. It won’t help her learn the material
and it won’t help her teacher understand where she is having
trouble.
Parent’s Corner
Parents can support positive behavior for their child by:
1. Requesting a copy of the expectations Matrix from your child’s school.
2. Placing a copy on the refrigerator for easy reference.
3. Discussing the expectations with your child.
4. When contacted regarding a problem behavior, referring to the Matrix and discuss the correct choice that your child
could have made. Share with your children that “split second decisions have long lasting effects on their lives!”

MHS Students Build Relationships and
Relevance ; Learning World Languages
__________________________________
What is the “Merrillville Advantage”?
Our students experience incredible advantages in terms of relationships,
opportunities in competition, academia, and serving their community.
Their commitment to excellence matches that of our school’s leadership,
teachers, and support staff.
INTEGRATING TECHNOLGY: Rigor
A great example of this commitment can be seen in our World
Languages Department where our teachers and students understand that
learning a foreign language is an increasingly relevant and critical skill in
preparing for the 21st Century. Fortunately our students have more
access to language acquisition resources today than ever before. Mr. Stoner introduces students to how multimedia technology can
enhance mastery attainment of language skills (top left).
TRAVEL ABROAD: Relevance
Nevena Djurdjevic (left, pictured with Ms. Spiro) is a student who was selected to
participate in the Indiana University Honors Program in France. She spent seven weeks
in France, lived with a French family and took French classes. There is also a program
in Germany, Spain, and Mexico. Interested students should ask their world language
teacher for details. The deadline is September 24th!
Challenges...(cont’d. from
previous page)
His parents did not have the same
options he did, he said, and they were not
able to go to college. “I wanted to have the
option to go to college and basically any
one I wanted to go to,” Juan said.
More recently, Allison Kish suffered a similar loss. On March 15, her father,
Mr. Ed Kish, passed away from a one in a
million brain disease, Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD). “It all happened so quickly.
That’s why it hasn’t fully set in yet,” Allison
said. Allison said that she has struggled
Mrs. Spiro’s
since, but finds it easier to put a smile on.
2nd Hour
Class
She is thankful for her friends’ support, saying that it has been “amazing.”
Mr. Kish’s passing has pushed
Allison to work harder in school. “It motivated me to push myself to make him proud,”
Allison said. “I know that he wouldn’t want
me to be sad.” Even with difficult days,
Allison is taking one step at a time to adjust
back to a normal life, “I’m trying to get back
to normal – it’s just a different kind of normal,” she said.
Senior Class President Najeb Arifee
has undergone persecution due to his dark
complexion and religious affiliation.
Najeb’s parents moved to the U.S. from
Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion, and
he was born in Indiana. But that didn’t stop
someone from scrawling his last name and
“Go back to where you came from” across
the playground of his elementary school
shortly after 9/11.
“I remember I thought to myself: Why
don’t they take the time to understand me?”
he said.
“My family is just like everyone else’s.
Even though I was young and it was hard, I
tried not to react negatively,” Najeb said.
Instead he takes advantage of every oppor-
tunity to foster understanding of all races
and religions. “I will always try,” Najeb said,
“to advocate and educate to prevent hate.”

Major Ramey & Senior Master Sergeant Wrasman
R.O.T.C.
Major Ramey and Senior Master Sergeant Wrasman do an incredible job
with ROTC. They lead by example in showing their students the
importance of respect, honor, and duty. R.O.T.C. has seen incredible
growth at MHS, in the few short years Major Ramey & SMSgt. Wrasman
have been at the helm. Student enrollment has increased, from just around
80 students to over 140! We thank them for their success and dedication,
their service and leadership! Congratulations to them both!
Ms. Julie Fregein

Ms. Fregein has done an exceptional job in the Math department.
She is in her 4th year here at MHS and is truly admired for all of her
hard work and dedication in the Freshmen Academy. Ms. Fregein
encourages excellence in her classroom by building positive student
relationships, teaching with rigor, and making Math relevant to the
lives of her students. Her positive attitude, creativity, and willingness
to go above and beyond for her students is why she is being honored
this month. Congratulations again, Ms. Fregein!

Congratulations Merrillville Graduate Mike
Neal on signing with the Green Bay Packers!
“He played defensive tackle mostly in college,”
Packers GM Ted Thompson said after the draft.
“He's almost ideally suited to play the 3-4
defensive end. We feel like he'll be a good asset for
us in our sub packages rushing the passer from the
inside.” Neal should play a significant role in 2010
with depth being a concern across the
defensive line. Neal was named All-Big
Ten honorable mention as a senior and
became the highest Boilermaker drafted
by the Packers since G/LB Tom Bettis
in 1955, the No. 5 overall pick.
