Report to the School Board March 2016
March 2016 Students of the Month Matthew Gibson (9th Grade) Annalisa Hernandez (11th Grade) Emma Perez (10th Grade) Mason Levar (12th Grade) Thank you Teachers MHS would like to thank all of our teachers for working so hard with students – each of them wear an array of hats beside "teacher" to help our students experience everything high school can offer for their adult lives. MHS is blessed to have such a dedicated staff in both the classroom and in extracurricular activities. This year MHS has a number of teachers who are coaching Academic UIL: Ms. Cawley, Ms. Paschal, Mr. Hermes, Ms. Hayes, Ms. Miller, Ms. Repa-Holly, and Mr. Neumann. Their support has increased student participation and representation across all UIL events. MHS has athletic coaches who are ready each day for their students, despite being pulled in a million directions each season with crazy practice and game schedules. Our Ag team never stops pushing students toward excellence with various projects in the shop and for competition, despite their endless travel schedules this time of year. Our talented fine arts teachers, Mrs. Wurzbach and Mr. Sims, foster outstanding creativity in our students through various art, photography, and theater projects and competitions. Mrs. Allen, Señora Page and Señorita Franco work diligently each day teaching our students a second language. Ms. Lehmann and Ms. Schultze foster leadership, community, and compassion with their various NHS and Student Council projects. The lessons and experiences derived from each of these opportunities truly set our students apart from their peers. Thank you teachers for the time you give to make these opportunities possible. The parent meeting was held in conjunction with the MHS Activity Fair, which showcased the clubs and activities that we have at MHS. All 2016-2017 MHS students were registered before spring break. English I and II EOC testing will occur on March 29 and 31. Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) In February, the high school FCA went to the first annual "Battle of the Burgers" at Universal City First Baptist Church. This was a Burger-eating contest between area high schools. Marion High School won! Moving forward, the FCA will be taking part in various community services, and we will be participating in a FCA tailgate party in May. The photography club has one more field trip for the year to Lady Bird Johnson Park in April. Student Council (STUCO) Last year, students started selling chocolate covered strawberries during Valentine's week. It was such a hit that STUCO did it again this year. All strawberries and pretzels were made and packaged by hand so it was a large group effort. Ninety chocolate-covered strawberries orders AND ~120 chocolate-covered pretzel orders were placed. That equated to 360 strawberries and 240 pretzels to dip in one day, followed by delivery the following day. The students did most of the work in getting this done efficiently and look forward to doing it again next year. Student Council wrapped up its Leukemia and Lymphoma drive and submitted their final report to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Students met their goal of $750 and will celebrate their accomplishment at a pasta party courtesy of the Olive Garden. Theatre The Marion Theatre Department has been in rehearsals for "Tartuffe," their 2016 UIL One Act Play entry. On March 3rd, the thespians traveled to La Vernia High School for an OAP clinic. The clinic gave students an opportunity to receive valuable feedback on their show as they prepared for competition. On March 22nd, the Marion Theatre department competed at UIL One Act Play district competition and advanced on to the bi-district competition in Lago Vista on April 2nd. Individual awards went to the following: Honorable Mention All-Star Cast Gary McDaniel Nico Jung Clarissa Herrera All Star Cast Brianna French Rachael Finch Chris Arnold All Star Crew Teara Hagen. Video Game Club The Marion High School Video Game Club had their first meeting this past month. There was a tremendous turnout. Over 70 students came out to learn about what the Video Game Club had to offer. Since then, the new club has formed committees and has been working toward the election of its president. As you can imagine, there has been a lot of excitement surrounding the club. Students are very eager to learn about various video games and their respective histories. Students have been learning about how different video games have evolved through graphics and strategy. We are excited to have the opportunity to come together over a common interest and many new relationships are already being formed.
