Thank you Teachers
MHS would like to thank all of our teachers for working so hard with students – each of
them wear an array of hats beside "teacher" to help our students experience everything high
school can offer for their adult lives. MHS is blessed to have such a dedicated staff in both
the classroom and in extracurricular activities. This year MHS has a number of teachers
who are coaching Academic UIL: Ms. Cawley, Ms. Paschal, Mr. Hermes, Ms. Hayes, Ms.
Miller, Ms. Repa-Holly, and Mr. Neumann. Their support has increased student
participation and representation across all UIL events. MHS has athletic coaches who are
ready each day for their students, despite being pulled in a million directions each season
with crazy practice and game schedules. Our Ag team never stops pushing students toward
excellence with various projects in the shop and for competition, despite their endless travel
schedules this time of year. Our talented fine arts teachers, Mrs. Wurzbach and Mr. Sims,
foster outstanding creativity in our students through various art, photography, and theater
projects and competitions. Mrs. Allen, Señora Page and Señorita Franco work diligently
each day teaching our students a second language. Ms. Lehmann and Ms. Schultze foster
leadership, community, and compassion with their various NHS and Student Council
projects. The lessons and experiences derived from each of these opportunities truly set our
students apart from their peers. Thank you teachers for the time you give to make these
opportunities possible. PRIDE! CHARACTER! CLASS!
AP Art
AP Art students are down to their last 2 months before they submit their portfolios to the
College Board. Jacob Immel and Sidney Knight recently judged an on-site drawing
competition for TAPPS in Seguin. AP Art students will take a field trip to work on their
portfolios.

Reserve Champion of their divisions. Lyndsi also won a $10,000 scholarship for her efforts.
Reagan would have won a scholarship as well but she won it several years ago and students
are only allowed to receive the award once.
The FFA Team and students thank all faculty and staff for their patience and flexibility
during this busy time of year.
Band
The band competed at several events over the past month. The bands performed at the
Lytle pre-UIL contest on Feb. 17th and 18th. Both bands took advantage of receiving
quality feedback from the contest judges. The bands hosted a pre-UIL event on campus
with two well respected clinicians, Cindy Mikel and Rodney Parker. On March 1st, the
high school bands competed at the UIL Concert and Sight Reading contest held at Canyon
Lake HS. The non-Varsity band received a rating of 1 (superior) on stage and 2 (excellent)
in the sight reading room. The Varsity band earned a 2 (excellent) on stage and a 1
(superior) in the sight reading room.
On February 25th, the Jazz band performed at the MEF fundraiser. The band performed
very well and received a lot of positive comments from the people in attendance.
On March 5th, the middle and high school bands, and the Jazz band, performed at the band
booster scholarship fundraiser. All bands performed well and received many positive
comments from the people in attendance.

Communities in Schools
Communities in Schools continue to provide students with basic need items, supportive
guidance, academic support, and assistance with career and/or college preparation. A large
group of juniors and seniors continue to attend Project Success on Thursdays. Seniors are
continuing to work on scholarship applications, accepting financial aid packages, and
signing up for orientation and applying for dorms at their prospective universities. In the
coming months, Project Success members will have the opportunity to visit St. Philips,
Texas A&M-San Antonio, Northeast Lakeview, and Central Texas Technology Center.
Counseling Services
The Counselors Office is busy registering students for the 2016-2017 school year. A parent
meeting was held for incoming 9th graders on February 29th and was well attended. The
parent meeting was held in conjunction with the MHS Activity Fair, which showcased the
clubs and activities that we have at MHS. All 2016-2017 MHS students were registered
before spring break.
English I and II EOC testing will occur on March 29 and 31.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)
In February, the high school FCA went to the first annual "Battle of the Burgers" at
Universal City First Baptist Church. This was a Burger-eating contest between area high
schools. Marion High School won!
Moving forward, the FCA will be taking part in various community services, and we will be
participating in a FCA tailgate party in May.
History Club
The History Club participated in the Activity Fair for Incoming 9th Graders. Information
was shared with all of those interested in becoming a member of the History Club.
The members are also eager for their upcoming field trip to the Pacific War Museum in
Fredericksburg and their hiking adventure at Enchanted Rock!
National Honor Society (NHS)
NHS members received their T-shirts in January, with an original design created by Abbey
Osborne. On March 22, the organization will be participating in the Elementary Health and
Safety Fair. On Saturday, April 2, NHS will be helping with the Alligator Creek Waterway
Cleanup effort sponsored by the GBRA.
Photography
Photography students participated in the Activity Fair on February 29, 2016. The kids were
excited to share information about the club to incoming 8th graders. On March 5, 2016
photo club students Kendra Kappleman and Abigale Osborne will be taking photographs for
the Marion 5k run. The photography club has one more field trip for the year to Lady Bird
Johnson Park in April.
Student Council (STUCO)
Last year, students started selling chocolate covered strawberries during Valentine's week. It
was such a hit that STUCO did it again this year. All strawberries and pretzels were made
and packaged by hand so it was a large group effort. Ninety chocolate-covered strawberries
orders AND ~120 chocolate-covered pretzel orders were placed. That equated to 360
strawberries and 240 pretzels to dip in one day, followed by delivery the following day.
The students did most of the work in getting this done efficiently and look forward to doing
it again next year.
Student Council wrapped up its Leukemia and Lymphoma drive and submitted their final
report to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Students met their goal of $750 and will
celebrate their accomplishment at a pasta party courtesy of the Olive Garden.
Theatre
The Marion Theatre Department has been in rehearsals for "Tartuffe," their 2016 UIL One
Act Play entry. On March 3rd, the thespians traveled to La Vernia High School for an OAP
clinic. The clinic gave students an opportunity to receive valuable feedback on their show as
they prepared for competition.
On March 22nd, the Marion Theatre department competed at UIL One Act Play district
competition and advanced on to the bi-district competition in Lago Vista on April 2nd.
Individual awards went to the following:
Honorable Mention All-Star Cast
Gary McDaniel
Nico Jung
Clarissa Herrera
All Star Cast
Brianna French
Rachael Finch
Chris Arnold
All Star Crew
Teara Hagen.
Video Game Club
The Marion High School Video Game Club had their first meeting this past month. There
was a tremendous turnout. Over 70 students came out to learn about what the Video Game
Club had to offer. Since then, the new club has formed committees and has been working
toward the election of its president. As you can imagine, there has been a lot of excitement
surrounding the club. Students are very eager to learn about various video games and their
respective histories. Students have been learning about how different video games have
evolved through graphics and strategy. We are excited to have the opportunity to come
together over a common interest and many new relationships are already being formed.
