PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Spring is officially here!
It's time to get your Porsche out of hiding. We've got a lot
of great events in store for this year, and your car
shouldn't waste time sitting in the garage when it can go
out and play with other cars.
Our Autocross Chair, Don Malson, has arranged for a
series of seven autocross events taking us all the way to
November. The first autocross, scheduled for May 16,
will be held at the Police Academy Training Facility in Sykesville, MD. If you
haven't been to an autocross yet, I highly recommend you join us for this one.
We'll have a set of recruits fresh from the very successful Autocross School
anxious to hone their skills in battle.
Tourmeister Allen Gunzelman already treated us to five tours and a Cars and
Coffee social, and it's only May! We're sure to see more fun drives from him this
season. Some of the tours in the works are the Ice Cream Cottage Drive, the
Arctic Circle Tour, and the Fall Foliage Tour. Last year's Fall Foliage Tour was
the most memorable tour I've been on. The image of 27 Porsches winding their
way through the back roads on a perfect (although a bit blustery) fall day was
truly outstanding. These tours are one of the easiest ways to get the most enjoyment out of your Porsche.
John Patterson, our Tech Chair, lined up two informative and well attended
events already this year. The session at DSI Electronics in Laurel, MD was
packed with people learning about audio for their cars. John has other events
on the drawing board, so watch the web site for details. If you're thinking that
tech sessions aren't for you because you don't work on your own car, then think
again. The information you get from these sessions help you to better understand the important service your Porsche needs.
On August 15th, Don and Nancy Malson will once again host the annual Crab
Feast at Kemptown Park. Last year, members were still socializing after 9:00
pm.
Last, but not least, set aside September 26th for the 40th annual Chesapeake
Challenge, which will be held at Frederick’s Everedy Square and Shab Row.
Bob Gutjahr and Ellen Beck will once again chair the event, so you know a
fabulous time is in store.
This issue of Patter is the final one in print format. We are moving to an electronic format that will be available monthly on the web site. Many thanks to Jan
Borchardt for her hard work on both the printed and online versions of Patter.

THE YELLOW MENACE
No, not that double yellow line preventing you from blasting
past soccer mom in her caravan on her cell phone doing
10mph below the posted speed.
It’s spring when a great paint job’s mind turns to pollen. That
heavy yellow haze on the car is the tree pollen that is not only aggravating your
allergies, but unknowingly clogging the air filters in your car.
As you are enjoying the cool spring days and stretch your P car’s legs on those
back roads, the engine is gulping thousands of liters of pollen laden air. If not
attended to, the intake air filter begins to gather pollen in the pleats. As the filter
fills with this pollen, the engine has to work harder to gather in enough air. If it
cannot gather enough air, the engine uses more gasoline. Without the air filter,
the pollen and other airborne contaminates get into the engine when it can
cause even worse damage.
So it’s always a preventative measure to pull the air filter out and use a little
compressed air to clean out the trapped material or replace the filter all together.
Also, the sudden 90 degree days mean we switch on the air conditioning system. Many of the 993-997 models use cabin air intake filters in much the same
manner. These filters get clogged just as fast, if not faster and need to be attended to as well. If not the intake motors work harder and their life span is reduced.
So how to tackle this task? Simple. Come to our next Tech session at Porsche of Annapolis and we will demonstrate how to remove, clean or replace
the engine and cabin intake filters. We will also go though common easy repairs any one can do to their P car to keep it running strong and efficient. If you
have ever has dreams of doing your own repairs, this is the place to start!
Looking forward to seeing everyone! RSVP in the usual way and watch the
website (pcachs.org) for when, where and why!
Stay safe out there!

EDITOR’S CORNER
T
BY
JAN BORCHARDT
his is a first for me. Although I have edited many
club publications, I have never written any commentary or observations of my own. I am anticipating
and encouraging feedback from the membership, as well as
asking for your patience with the inevitable typos that seem
to appear as we all convert our thoughts into the written word. Andrew
gives me too much credit. Without the great members who, month after
month, respond to my endless requests for articles and pictures, there
would be no PORSCHE PATTER.
I am also going to keep on “nudging” all of you members to come out.
Every event that we have attended with this club has been fun. Some
events last longer than others, and some are interminable (SWAP
MEET). But there are always interesting people to meet, great stories to
hear, and good friends to be made. Why? Because of the CARS.
I know that we all have different comfort zones, and different ways of
dealing with people. No-one likes everyone and NO-ONE is universally
liked. But, when I see people at events that are sitting or standing alone,
it bothers me. We are getting 30 to 35 people to come out to do nothing
but eat and talk and have fun. Many times it is their first event. Personally, I would most likely not return if no one spoke to me, but I’m hoping
that, if that has happened to you, that you will come back and walk up to
one of us and say, “Hi, my name is *** and we haven’t met yet, or I
know we’ve met but I can’t remember your name.” Don’t worry! None of
us can remember names. WE REMEMBER CARS!
Also, you can let us know that you’d like to come to whatever event AND
you can let us know what kind of events you like. That way we can plan
more of what you like and the club will grow and be happy. . . and the
PATTER will get better!
Thanks for listening—See you in June on the WEB, I hope!

UPCOMING EVENTS
MAY 13TH SOCIAL ▪
STEVE KINSLEY
The location for the monthly social on May 13th is again at Johnny Dee’s
Lounge in the Loch Raven area. In April, many members enjoyed the banquet
hall reserved for us with our own dedicated waitress, and a menu to pick from to
ensure great service. We will have a short film or DVD for entertainment, possibly some past region activities. Come see what your region has to offer for activities, and enjoy highly-recommended dinner selections. The link below is not
a dedicated website but does have directions and a great write-up.
Please RSVP me at [email protected] so I can inform the manager of
our needs. See you there!

Thursday eve 6:30pm to 8. The Shallow Creek Bookstore Café, at 7216 North Point Road, has invited us
back! Those members that attended back in February
had such a good time that several suggested a return
visit. Their special coffee is as great as their ICE
CREAM!. They also have Soups, sandwiches, salads and breakfast is
available all day.
Come out and enjoy an evening of car talk and eating at a unique establishment that is family owned and has Porsche friendly parking.

P2O ▪ BOB PURGASON
On the last weekend in July there is an event in Ohio called Porsches2Oxford.
We have not been before, but after talking with others it seems like a
terrific event. What we are planning is to make it a 3-5 day trip, so we
can enjoy what ever else we find along the way out and back. We’ve
made friends with the top individual responsible for the event, his name
is Brice Kadel. He will be coming over from Ohio for the Hershey Swap
Meet, so we can all talk with him and get more detail about the
event. The P2O website also has many pictures and video from some of
the past years, and they all look to be a lot of fun.
Last year they attracted almost 400 Porsches, and the goal this year is
to have 500 cars. That’s quite a showing, and they have lots of vendors
and some very nice drawing prizes. The entry fee is just $25 with $5 of
that going to the American Cancer Society.
They have a Peoples Choice car show, with lots of very nice Porsches to
look at. We would certainly love to see you decide to go, and maybe we
can get other Chesapeake folks interested as well. The website is http://

and beverages. Continue to check the website for additional details and

APRIL TECH EVENT
It was a gorgeous day. Many members attended, both new and old and
young and old. Never mind. Everyone who could put their top down
did. The Garage was fantastic, and the house was beautiful. Mark Lee
was charming and informative. We all learned how badly we messed up
when we bought our used Porsches! If anyone has a rich benefactor,
the club would love to have a clubhouse. Pictures follow.

PRE-SWAP MEET BREAKFAST
M
ore than 30 people (and their cars) gathered at the COACH LIGHT
RESTAURANT at the first exit off I83 in Shrewsbury on their way to
the 2009 HERSHEYSWAP MEET. It was quick and good, although
there was an interesting story about a cup of hot tea. If you happen
to think that today’s teenagers are just like you were, try asking one for a “hot
tea.” You may end up with a microwaved glass of iced tea. Donna eventually
got her tea and after visiting around the cars, we all split up and managed to
make it to the Hershey Park area where we threw caution to the winds and
spent, spent, spent.
For the first time in years, the weather was spectacular. Almost too hot. Hot
and tired, some of us made our way to the HERSHEY LODGE (of 50th PARADE FAME) to have an early dinner at the Hershey Grill. The multitude of
chocolate delights included Chocolate Catsup ! Go figure.
The Porsche Club almost filled the restaurant!
The Porsche Club did fill the parking lot!

AUTOCROSS SCHOOL
BY DON MALSON
Bright blue skies and warm temperatures welcomed a group of 30 enthusiastic participants to the Chesapeake Region PCA Autocross
School 2009. We started the day with donuts and coffee, tech inspection and then on to three hours of classroom training led by Dan Dazzo.
Dan is the Director of the Maryland Police Academy Training Facility
and has been teaching the autocross class for many years.
After consuming ten pizzas, sixty chicken strips and 20 breadsticks,
along with 14 liters of soda, the group was ready to test their skills on the
skid pad and practice courses. By the end of the practice session all
drivers are now ready for the first autocross, scheduled for May 16 at the
Maryland Police Academy Training Facility.
Special thanks are extended to the following hard-working volunteers,
without whom the class would not be possible: Dan Dazzo, Gail Dazzo,
Jim Condax, Steve Condax, Andrew Toth, Ron Bremer, Art Cuevas,
Daniel Ashby, Greg Martell, Theodore Goodwin, Nancy Malson and
Hank Schwarz.

2009 CHESAPEAKE CHALLENGE
C
hesapeake Region invites all of its members and
friends to celebrate the 40th annual Chesapeake
Challenge, the oldest running PCA multi event
weekend, on Saturday, September 26, 2009 in
Frederick, Maryland.
For 2009, we are reprising last year’s highly successful and popular
one day format, providing a full Saturday's worth of activities that will
offer tremendous value (and a few surprises) for your registration feenot to mention a chance to make a little history at the very first
downtown Chesapeake Challenge.
This year's Challenge Concours d’Elegance and Car Show will be
center stage at Frederick’s Everedy Square and Shab Row, a
delightfully quaint shopping and dining area in the older section of
town just east of Main Street.
Challenge concours
competitors will stage on
the bricks in the Everedy
Square area as well as at a
canopied parking lot
across the street, which
promises cool shade and
plenty of room. If you’ve
seen the spectacular
pictures of the Charlotte
Porsche Parade where the cars formed part of the city’s backdrop, then
hold that thought and think Porsches artfully arrayed at a refurbished
historic downtown location within walking distance of bistros, antique
dealers, and unique shops.
Find it on the web at http://www.everedysquare.com/

(Continued from page 18)
Saturday afternoon will find you and your Porsche enjoying Steve
Kinsley's Gimmick Rally, which will wind its way around the
delightful country roads and through the covered bridges of
Frederick County. Chesapeake Gimmick Rallies are like tours with a
unique set of instructions, so all who have enjoyed the region's tours
should be equally thrilled with this event.
The Gimmick Rally will bring everyone back to Frederick’s very own
downtown winery, Frederick Cellars- only about two blocks north
of Everedy Square and Shab Row. Frederick Cellars is a charming
rustic winery that offers a varied selection of award winning wines
for our sampling. Whether you go on the Gimmick Rally or stay in
Frederick for the day to shop and tour the city’s interesting history,
Frederick Cellars is the perfect location to wind down the day’s
events.
Check it out on the web at: http://www.frederickcellars.com/
index.html
When you arrive, take in the many impressive features of the winery,
sample a glass of wine, and then prepare yourself for the third and
final event of the evening- a special Tech Quiz entitled ‘Porsche at
the Movies’.
After the Tech Quiz, enjoy a pleasant evening of socializing and a delicious catered dinner while the scores are tallied. Trophies will
follow, and we should conclude an exciting day not later than 8:00
PM! If you are in the mood, jazz aficionados will want to stay for the
highly regarded Josh Walker Duo playing in the Cellars from 8:0010:00 PM.
More details to follow, but save the date now for a wonderful day in a
wonderful city! Questions? Email Challenge Co-Chairs Ellen Beck at
