Improving the lives of the people we serve
Jon: a life improving through CenterPointe addiction services
By Hilde Phipps, director of adult addiction services
Jon had stressed his relationships with his loved ones. He was addicted
to prescription pills and meth, and he tried to quit many times. Jon was
also diagnosed with depression and anxiety, and he needed help. After
his grandfather passed, everything changed. Jon wanted a life, and he
wanted it to matter. Following years of addiction and several attempts
at sobriety, he was finally ready. He made a call and referred himself
to the medical detoxification and residential rehabilitation at CenterPointe, services provided by the Helen Ross McNabb Center.
Substance use disorders impact the lives of millions of Americans, and
thousands of East Tennesseans like Jon. Addiction is a chronic brain
disease with a strong genetic influence. According to the Prescription
for Success Report by the Tennessee Department of Mental Health
and Substance Abuse Services, “Prescription drug abuse is a pervasive,
multi-dimensional issue impacting Tennessee individuals, families and
communities. Of the 4,850,000 adults in Tennessee, it is estimated
that 221,000 (or 4.56%) have used pain relievers, also known as prescription opioids, in the past year for non-medical purposes. Of those
adults, it is estimated that 69,100 are addicted to prescription opioids
and require treatment.”
As important as asking for help, is the need to provide the most effective level of care possible for the numerous issues an individual living
with addiction is facing. Currently, approximately 1,000 individuals are
waiting to use one of seven detoxification beds at CenterPointe. With
the widespread use of opiates, benzodiazepines and alcohol in Tennessee, people are at a heightened risk for death if they do not receive
detoxification in a safe, medically monitored environment. The need
versus availability of treatment beds simply adds to the stress that individuals and family members are already facing.
Families face more and more crises as a result of substance use disorders. While no one is to blame when
someone suffers from a substance use disorder,
What’s inside...
many times family members blame
themselves and each
other due to the
devastation the disease has on the family system. When
a family comes together to ensure a
family member gets
the help they need,
they are often frustrated and discouraged by the long waiting lists as well as the systems of care that are
fragmented and inadequate to meet the needs of the community.
Substance use treatment is the most effective option for engaging people in life-long recovery. The biggest predictor of success in substance
use treatment is length of stay. Therefore, it is necessary to build continuums of care that are capable of engaging people in treatment and
providing recovery support over the long run. These investments are
cost-efficient and will effectively provide a healthier Tennessee for our
citizens, our children and our grandchildren—just as Jon experienced.
Jon found help, hope and healing through the Helen Ross McNabb
Center’s addiction treatment services. With the help of resources and
client-focused care at CenterPointe, Jon changed his way of long-term
thinking. He learned that sobriety and recovery are the most important
to him, and without them, he cannot positively experience relationships with family and friends or build a career. Now his heart and his
mind are finally in the same place. Jon is a life improving.
25,000 people served annually. 25,000 lives improving.
The Center is releasing a monthly video so you can see how lives are
improving in your community. The first video shares Jon’s story of recovery.
Get a glimpse by visiting the McNabb Center YouTube channel,

Hamblen County Center celebrates
opening and welcomes community
On Friday, Nov. 13, 2015, a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrated the outpatient center in Morristown. The Hamblen County Center is providing mental health services and social services
to children, adults and families.
The Center constructed and furnished a 7,000
square foot facility to provide adequate operating space for both its current and anticipated
needs. The completion of the new clinic increases the facility’s service capacity by 50 percent. In support of the Center’s goal, the City of
Morristown donated a sizable lot for the new
facility. This site is ideal as it is located next to
the Center’s adolescent residential treatment
facility and youth emergency shelter.
The new facility will allow
sufficient space for psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses,
master’s level clinicians,
and community-based case
managers to provide quality
mental health care for residents in and surrounding
Hamblen County. Additionally, the Center will act as a
base for therapists and case
managers when going into
the community’s schools
and homes to meet clients’
needs. The campaign to
build the new facility was
the result a of true partnership between the
Greater Lakeway community and the Center.
With the community contributing $750,000
to the capital campaign and the Center contributing $750,000, the amount contributed
to the project totals $1.5 million.
“Providing access to quality, affordable behavioral health care is a vital part of the Helen Ross
McNabb Center’s ability to meet its mission
of improving the lives of the people we serve.
This new center would not be possible without
the community’s support,” states Jerry Vagnier,
the Helen Ross McNabb Center president and
CEO. “Together, we will impact thousands of
lives by helping those in our community with
the greatest need and the least resources.”

Success at the Knoxville Challenger
The Knoxville Challenger enriches our community through a partnership of professional tennis and the Helen Ross McNabb Center. The 2015 Knoxville Challenger raised more
than $150,000, which allows the Center to provide programs that serve children, adults
and families in East Tennessee. The Center will continue to build on the positive momentum of the Knoxville Challenger in the future. Thank you to our sponsors and volunteers for a successful event! For more information and tournament pictures, please visit
facebook.com/KnoxChallenger.

Tennessee Association of Mental Health Organizations
gives highest honors
The Tennessee Association of Mental Health Organizations (TAMHO) recently awarded its highest honors during its annual conference in Murfreesboro, Tenn. In total, 13 awards were bestowed upon
exceptional individuals and agency programs during the ceremony.
East Tennessee awardees who advocate for individuals served by the
Helen Ross McNabb Center include:
Dorothea Dix Professional Service Award
Hilde Phipps, Helen Ross McNabb Center director of adult addiction services
Dorothea Dix was a champion of improved
mental health care and is regarded as the
most important force in bringing the issue
of mental health to the public forum. Hilde
Phipps was selected for the award due to her
dedication to serving her community and
profession for more than 32 years. She has
committed her life to providing insight, training and direction for alcohol and drug abuse
counseling. Hilde is a Licensed Tennessee Alcohol and Drug Abuse
Counselor and currently serves as the director of adult addiction services at the Center. She oversees administrative and clinical operations for addiction services including medical detoxification, residential rehabilitation and intensive outpatient services. In recent years,
she developed specialized programs to serve specific populations
and needs. Hilde has dedicated her life to creating a better system of
care for uninsured individuals with co-occurring disorders. Her work
impacts individual lives and the overarching system of care. Like
Dorothea Dix, her work is far-reaching.
Frank G. Clement Community Service Award
Captain Don Jones, Knoxville Police Department
Frank G. Clement, who served as governor of Tennessee from 1953
to 1959 and from 1963 to 1967, had a personal concern for the welfare of the mentally ill, and his accomplishments positively impacted
mental health care. Like Frank G. Clement, Captain Don Jones of the
Knoxville Police Department (KPD) has consistently supported and
created new levels of care for individuals facing persistent mental
Congratulations, Dr. Tony Poteet
illness. Capt. Jones’ leadership has set the
pace for introducing innovative services
and resources for police officers to use
when encountering individuals experiencing mental illness. He is not opposed to
doing something different in order to see
a positive outcome. In fact, he is usually
leading the effort. Not only has Capt. Jones
made it his personal mission to educate officers on issues that surround mental illness, but he also works to
make a difference by improving and expanding systems of care so
that resources are available in our community, especially for individuals and families living with mental illness. Capt. Jones lives out a
call of duty that is one of servitude and leadership.
Program of Excellence Award
Helen Ross McNabb Center—Mother Goose
Mother Goose is a community outreach program that focuses on
the brain development of infants. The program creates important
stimulation groups for children up to age 5. Parents or caretakers focus on visual development, knowledge needs and language skills of
their infant. Mother Goose teaches parents how to interact with their
children and how to stimulate their child’s curiosity and develop their
concentration using play, music, and reading or reciting stories.
Media Award
Kristi Nelson, Knoxville News Sentinel
Kristi Nelson is a health writer and has worked
with the Knoxville News Sentinel since 1999.
For more than 15 years, she has shed light on
issues that people typically shy away from.
These issues include suicide, HIV/AIDS,
homelessness, abuse, mental illness and addiction. Through her reporting, Kristi gives
a voice to those with the most debilitating
conditions and the least resources that are
often overlooked and underserved in our community.
The McNabb Center welcomes Dr. Arun
Jethanandani to its clinical staff
The Helen Ross McNabb Center is proud to
announce the addition of Arun Jethanandani,
M.D. to its team of providers.
(From left to right) Brad Franks, assistant director of addiction services; Hilde
Phipps, director of adult addiction services; Leann Human-Hilliard, regional clinical
vice president; Dr. Tony Poteet, former medical director of addiction services
Congratulations to Dr. Tony Poteet for his 15 years of service as the Center’s
medical director of addiction services. We wish him the best in his retirement. Dr. Poteet dedicated his career to serving individuals experiencing
addiction through compassion and advocacy. He humbly approached his
work at CenterPointe and helped improve thousands of lives on their road
to recovery.
Dr. Arun Jethanandani, also known as Dr. J,
is now providing care at the Center’s Knox
County Children and Youth Center and at
CenterPointe, the crisis and substance abuse
treatment facility. Dr. J is serving as the medical director of addiction services. She received her bachelor of medicine
and bachelor of surgery at Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical
Education and Research, (JIPMER), which is affiliated with the University of
Madras in Pondicherry, India. She completed her residency at Hahnemann
University Hospital, which is affiliated with Drexel University College of
Medicine in Philadelphia, Pa. Dr. J specializes in child, adolescent and adult
psychiatry. She has special interest and experience in serving pregnant
women and plans to provide outpatient detoxification, along with other
needed services.

Community support brings holiday cheer for families
The Helen Ross McNabb
Center often serves those
who have little in the way
of financial resources and
struggle to provide the
basics of food, clothing
and shelter for their families. As a result, the holidays can become
a stressful time as every child looks forward to having gifts to open
while they celebrate the holiday season with their families.
For the past 14 years, the Dear Santa program has provided holiday
gifts for every child and teen in need that is served by the Center.
Because many of the children have very little, their Christmas wish
lists often help to fulfill basic needs. Community volunteers are actively involved in making the program a success by sponsoring wish
lists for families in need, donating money and volunteering their
time to help make it all happen. In addition, funds raised through the
Beth Haynes 12 Days of Christmas
Online Auction benefit Dear Santa
and allow the program to serve more
children each year. The 2015 auction
had more than 250 unique items
provided by East Tennessee businesses.
