HEAD’S NEWSLETTER
SUMMER
TERM 2013
Dear Parents and Carers
Thank you for your continued support for the School and for our young people over the
past academic year, it is always appreciated. It has been an exceptionally rewarding year
and to capture a flavour of it I would encourage you to cast your eye over the Chaloner
magazine which has been distributed to every student in school in the past couple of
weeks.
The Chaloner magazine began in 1932 and has run (on and off) for 66 editions. It remains a
fantastic feature of life at King James’s and has also become our ‘archive’ of the history of
the school. For the first time this year we are able to put the magazine in full colour on the
website.

The magazine is packed with highlights from the year but I would like to pay a special
tribute to two of our departing Y13 students, Lydia Clissitt and Jonny Tattersall, who have
represented England this year in Hockey and Cricket. Well done to both of them, they
represent the hard work and dedication that is required to achieve any success, there are
no shortcuts.
There is also a piece in the Chaloner about the retirement of Pete Finan, nothing short of a
King James’s School legend, with a career here spanning 38 years. Pete has taught so many
generations of Knaresborough children that there must be hardly a family in the town that
has not experienced history at the hands of Mr Finan. I have every admiration for Pete. As
a history teacher myself he has had the unenviable task of being my boss, at the same time
that I have been his boss. Luckily we have always seen eye to eye in terms of what is
important in history teaching.
In many ways the best tribute that I can pay to Pete is that he is a metaphor for
the school. He sums up what we value. Good pastoral care has been at the heart of
everything that he has done, his commitment to the extra-curricular life of the school
has been immense and Pete, like the school, is community focused. Moreover Pete
has stuck to his principles despite wild swings in education policy over the years. I like
to think that, as we are in such a turbulent phase of education, the school is doing
the same; taking careful stock of what we value before rushing towards the latest government initiative.
With the best of luck to Pete for his retirement, and best wishes to our students awaiting
summer exam results it only remains for me to wish all the King James’s families a good
summer.

Parentpay
Parents’ use of Parentpay, the online financial transaction system, is growing daily and we are delighted by
the uptake. This is clearly the ideal way to collect school income, including catering.
From September, we would ask that everyone uses Parentpay as we move towards the need for any pupil
ever to bring money into the school. It’s simple to use, traceable, secure and ensures all money goes to the
required destination.
Photographs of Students for Publicity Purposes
Throughout the school year we take photographs and video recordings of students participating in lessons, trips and other activities, e.g. sport, music, art and drama. Largely these
photographs and videos are used internally, but on occasions we publish photographs on
the website and use them for other purposes. We would never name a student on a
photograph without the permission of parents and only in very limited situations, e.g.
articles in the Knaresborough Post. If you do not wish your child to be in any photographs
or articles, please inform your child’s Head of Year, in writing, in September.
Pastoral Structure — 2013/14
The pastoral system continues as previously. In Years 9, 10 and 11, Learning Managers are responsible for
monitoring students’ academic progress. Pastoral Officers and Heads of Years 7 and 8 are the first point of
contact for parents for all issues concerning pastoral care.

Exam Certificates
The examinations officer will be placing a list of uncollected exam certificates from
previous years on the website after the summer holiday. Certificates from 2011/12
can be collected from the examinations office during normal school hours (a signature is
required).
For certificates from earlier years, please phone first to check availability. Uncollected
certificates prior to 2009/10 have been destroyed or returned to the exam boards .
School Fund
We are very grateful to all parents who support the school through subscription to the school fund. We
see this as a vital addition to improve our welfare and education provision. Money raised reaches the
parts of the school not fully funded by the Department for Education. It specifically provides assistance
for achievement awards, pupil incentives, financial assistance and better resources. There is a facility
on Parentpay (including details on gift aid) on how to pay into the School Fund. Your support is much
appreciated, thank you.
Safety on the school site
As we approach the summer holidays, can we please remind parents that the school site should not be used
by students outside normal school times and without supervision.
We have stressed to students the danger that the school site can present and if you could support this
message at home, particularly in relation to climbing on roofs, that would be appreciated .

MEDICAL REQUEST—SPARE EPIPENS/INHALERS
Parents of students who use either EpiPens or inhalers are requested to leave spare prescribed inhalers
and/or EpiPens (in their original dispenser box) with the school nurses, so that they can be used as a
back-up in case the originals are forgotten or lost.
KJS CHARITABLE DONATIONS
During the last academic year the school has raised over
£6,000 for charity.
Thanks to the generosity of students, parents and staff, many charities have benefited from our fundraising activities, including £1,600 to Children in Need, over £900 to the Lepra Appeal, £1,800 to Sport Relief, and
over £1,000 to Cancer Charities to name but a few.
Non-uniform days and cake sales in particular have proved very successful in raising money for international,
national and local charities alike.
SENIOR CITIZENS’ PARTY
Our annual summer party hosted by Year 13 students for Knaresborough’s senior citizens was once
again a great success. S1 was packed as
around 140 pensioners enjoyed afternoon
tea, a great variety of musical entertainment and free raffle and bingo. Year 10
catering students had been busy all day
making and baking and put on a fantastic
spread of sandwiches, savouries and cakes,
with tables beautifully laid and decorated.
They then did a fantastic job serving at
tables, providing teas, coffees and then
strawberries and cream.
The Sixth Formers ran the show, with everyone playing their part, from the compères
and musicians to meeters and greeters, table hosts, kitchen helpers and raffle and bingo organisers
and bus escorts. We are very grateful to Phil, Malcolm and Richard from Knaresborough Lions, who
ran three minibuses providing a door-to-door transport service so more visitors could attend. The
event was also supported by more than 40 local retailers, who donated gifts and vouchers as prizes
for the raffle and bingo.
We received some lovely ‘thank yous’ from our guests, and comments such as:
'The youngsters did a sterling job. Entertainment was great, it got my feet a tapping, took me back a
few years.' Ray & Jean Scurrah
'What a wonderful gesture for you all to provide food and entertainment for us 'oldies'. Our hostess
was a delightful girl and very thoughtful and concerned that we should enjoy everything on offer.
‘You have a school to be proud of.' Mrs Margaret Foster.
‘The raffle and bingo prizes were numerous and the entertainment very entertaining. The students
were solicitous and very polite.' Mrs J Allen.

ON THE SPORTING FRONT…
The best season ever for KJS Athletics teams!!
Area & County Championships
Schools Cup
This is a National competition and a time for individuals to
achieve Area & County colours and ultimately aim to get into
the National Schools event where they need to achieve an
entry standard in their event.
This is a National Competition and is an athletics team event
where each member of the team has to perform in two
disciplines, one track and one field. Competitors are then
given a score for how far they jump or throw in their field
event or how fast they run in the track event.
Step 1 Area Colours
Becky Wood - 800m
Jonny Ashman - Discus
Mark Taylor - 1500m
Sean Richards - Discus
This year we entered four teams: a Junior girls team (Yr7 &
8), Junior boys (Yr7 & 8), Intermediate girls (Yr9 & 10), and
intermediate boys (Yr9 & 10) and have enjoyed our most successful season in this competition.
Step 2 Area and County Colours
Millie Howard (800m)
Josie Parry (300m hurdles)
Molly Webster (800m)
George Davis (Javelin)
Step 3 National Qualification
George Davies (Javelin)
Josie Parry (75m Hurdles)
Millie Howard (800m)
Molly Webster (800m)
In the English Schools Championships all 4 KJS athletes had a
fantastic time and the event was televised on Sky Sports!
Molly and Josie missed out on the finals in their events. Millie
ran a personal best and reached the semi-finals where she
finished in 4th place but narrowly missed out on reaching the
final.
rd
George came a fantastic 3 place and will have another
shot in this age group next year as he was competing
against 16 year olds. Last year as a junior George came
2nd so watch out for next year as he is after the full set of
bronze, silver and gold.
In the North Yorkshire round we had 3 winning teams, with
the others being runners up. King James’s School were the
only school in the NE Region who got all 4 teams through to
the Regional Rounds and it is the second year running that we
have managed to do this!!!! So we are gaining a fantastic
reputation amongst other schools in our Region.
In the Regional B Final at Middlesbrough the Junior girls came
3rd improving on their score from the 1st round. The Inter girls
were hit by injuries and illness and finished in 6th place. The
junior boys came 4th and the Inter boys finished in 3rd place.
Harrogate and Craven Schools competition
This is a local competition which all the schools in our area
enter. The first round was held at Harrogate High school,
where 43 of our students managed to qualify.
At the Finals Day we had 9 Area Champions:
Jack Brennan – 1500m
Matt Keogh – Discus
Jonny Ashman – Discus
Mark Taylor - 1500m
Beth Nadin – High Jump
Matilda Everitt – 1500m
Sean Richards – Discus
Sydney King – Hurdles
Kayleigh Templeton – Discus
Liam Marwood - Discus

Velodrome and BMX Trips
Students from all years embarked on a trip to the home of British Cycling in Manchester and
had the chance to ride the Velodrome or BMX course. This was an opportunity to follow in the
tyre-marks of legends like Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton and Shanaze Read. Each group
spent an hour learning the skills from specialist coaches and experienced the lumps and bumps
of the BMX track or how to ride the 'banking' round the Velodrome.
The BMX course was very technical and required speed, agility and nerve either when
'pumping' over the small bumps or jumping over the large humps.
The Velodrome required power and stamina as you needed to maintain speed round every bend, otherwise there was a chance
of falling off! The 45 degree banking doesn't look too bad on TV but when you see it in real life...! The start ramp in the BMX
gives you a similar feeling… and the adrenalin starts pumping!
The students and staff had a fantastic time and were exhilarated by their experiences and all want to go again. Watch this space
for future trips!

DRAMA NEWS
‘STARS’ - TALENT SHOW:
TECHNICAL CLUB
This took place last week and was a super evening. With a
total of 10 acts including singing, dance, guitar and acting
the students ‘wowed’ a
large audience with their
talents. Technically slick –
this show proves to take
off during the next few
years. Don’t forget to
audition next year to see
if you can be one of those
successful contenders!
The ‘Tech’ team have done a sterling job this
year; without their dedication and expertise
the huge range of shows and performances
would not be possible. We aim to meet at the
start of September, old and new members
welcome.
Students busy rehearsing for the big event!
CONGRATULATIONS to the talented BTEC pupils who
performed their production of ‘Grease’ and ‘Blood Brothers’
in July. The show was a culmination of their first year skills
and proved to be a roaring success!
CONGRATULATIONS to all students who have taken part
in Year 7, 8 and 9 Drama club this year, it’s been lots of fun
and we have seen an array of talents! Don’t forget to look out
for next year’s Drama clubs when you return in September.
GIFTED AND TALENTED
We would like to offer students with passion and talent the
opportunity to be involved in various events within Drama
throughout the year. Please encourage your son/daughter to
speak to Ms Davies if they are interested .
Lots to support in a very busy year next year
and plenty of opportunities to develop technical
skills. Grateful thanks this year in particular to
Matt Turnbull, Matt Carnazza, Jimmy Bent,
Georgie Webb and Freddie Loach.
You rock!
FORTHCOMING ATTRACTIONS!
HOUSE DRAMA
Watch out for House Drama posters next term, the intrepid
sixth formers will be busily organising this traditional annual
event. It’s a great opportunity for budding performers to
strut their stuff and have a lot of fun in the process!
SCHOOL PRODUCTION – ‘WEST SIDE STORY’
A long awaited announcement that this year’s school
production is the acclaimed and all powerful ‘West Side
Story’. Auditions will take place in the second week back in
September
– look forward to seeing lots and lots of you there!
‘STUDIO PRODUCTION:
This year saw the second King James's School Studio Production and it was met with anticipation and excitement after the
success of the previous instalment! Dario Fo's 'The Virtuous
Burglar' was the choice of script this year. A farce that follows
the journey of a lone burglar (Beau Hill Smith) who becomes
entwined in a web of deceit and misunderstanding. His villainy
is side tracked as the owner of the apartment (Finn Ella) and his
lover (Louise Henry) return home from an adulterous evening.
With his own wife (Ellen Carnazza) pressuring him to bring her
something home from his exploits he is left feeling confused
when asked to cover for the couple as their lies develop.
Antonio (Charlie Phillips) and Anna (Emily Binks) who are the
adulterous couples’ spouses are thrust into the situation and
hilarity ensues. The plotline is complex and detailed and could
be difficult to perform if it wasn’t for the outstanding skills of
all of the performers involved. Even the cameo from a second
burglar (Tom Higgs) was worth the standing ovation that the
audience gave on both nights.
The production was an overwhelming success and, yet again, showcased the talented students and staff in the King James's
Drama Department. Mr Haughton directed the production and said, 'It has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to work
with these students and I am very proud of their achievements.' The production was excellently supported by Phoebe Logan as
Stage Manager and Matt Carnazza as lighting technician.
WELL DONE TO ALL OF OUR DRAMA STUDENTS IN BOTH CURRICULAR AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.
A FANTASTIC YEAR FOR ALL OF YOU!

ART NEWS
LONDON ARTS TRIP WEEKEND FOR YEAR 10, MAY 2013
51 Year 10 Arts students went on a cultural trip to
London in May 2013. We stayed at a relatively new
Premier Inn at London’s Heathrow Terminal 5 where
the group stayed last year. This was convenient for
getting into central London. We arrived at the Hotel
late on the Friday
night and settled
into the hotel.
On Saturday
morning we started the day by going for a flight on
the London Eye –
some amazing
views of London
as long as you weren’t suffering from vertigo!
After this we had a tour of Tate Modern – with some weird and wonderful contemporary Art on show. Then we
had a bit of a tour of London on the way to the British Museum. This is a spectacular museum with exhibits
ranging from Ancient Egyptian Art to marble sculptures from the Parthenon in Greece.
After this cultural feast we had the afternoon for shopping – some retail therapy which was really excellent. In the
evening we saw a magical, funny and really brilliant performance of ‘Matilda’ at the Cambridge Theatre.
On Sunday we went to the Warner Brothers Harry Potter studios tour. This was simply extraordinary – to see the
way all the props had been made and the familiar rooms from Hogwarts as well as the scale model of the castle
itself, where a lot of the scenes were filmed against a ‘green screen’ so that images could be imposed was a real
insight. Loads of photos taken of some of us riding a wand filmed against a green screen too to make it look as if
we were flying! The shop was great but very expensive – however Bertie Botts all flavoured sweets were yummy –
at least some of them!
Thanks to all the Art staff for organising and taking this trip – a truly unforgettable experience.
GCSE AND BTEC ART AND DESIGN RESEARCH DAY - THE YORKSHIRE
SCULPTURE PARK AND THE HEPWORTH MUSEUM, JUNE 2013
At the start of the new academic year all the GCSE artists went on a research trip to
the Hepworth gallery in Wakefield and the Yorkshire sculpture park.
The theme of our first project is ‘Looking at sculpture’ so this was ideal.
At the Hepworth we made lots of drawings of the sculptures and took
photos – there is a lot of Barbara Hepworth’s work here plus sculpture and
paintings from her contemporaries in St Ives, Cornwall.
After this we went to the YSP – specifically to look at the work of the artist Yinka Shonibare – who deals with issues
of Britain’s Imperial and Colonial history. He makes some weird sculptures using fabric and also uses stuffed
animals such as foxes heads put on to a body and dressed elaborately in African style costumes.

ART NEWS…. continued
ART ON A SUMMER’S EVENING JULY 4TH
This annual exhibition was again held in the Chaloner Hall – full of some amazing art and sculpture as well as a
lot of photography and lots of parents and students who had come to celebrate all this work.
The sculpture ranged from some strange and beautifully Decorated Heads by the GCSE artists which were
metamorphosing into different shapes - from vampires to
Medusa and some exciting
interpretations of various Art
works with portraits of the artist
included.
The AS and A level Art looked
really strong and vibrant with
an enormous amount of different ideas and some huge images. The new feature this
year was the introduction of A2
photography – again some startling and thought provoking
images were on display with
some really experimental
photography being made.
EXPRESSIVE ART GCSE
Twenty four students completed this course from June 2012 to May 2013 and await their results in August. They
were a great group to work with and hope they achieve the grades they deserve.
The new cohort for 2013/14 have now begun the GCSE course. Our first session was particularly exciting as it was
a trip to the Leeds Grand Theatre to see “GHOST the Musical” on tour from the West End. 48 students thoroughly
enjoyed the performance and returned to Knaresborough tired at 11.15pm, but very excited by the experience.
Now the hard work begins!

NEWS FROM AROUND THE SCHOOL ...
Crag Rat Blade—our Greenpower Car
Hopes were high for the Greenpower season and the schools electric powered racing car Crag Rat Blade. Work over the winter
involved fitting a new 14 speed gearbox, redoing the electronics and a brand new bodyshell. The team attended the two
Greenpower organised practice events at Mallory Park and the Nissan Test Track in Gateshead and the car ran almost faultlessly. This was in preparation for the races proper with the team entering at Croft, Rockingham and Aintree.
The first race was the Northern heat at Croft circuit. The car was in a
strong ninth position and working its way through the field after
starting at the back of the grid. Unfortunately after the first driver
change the car was involved in an accident. At the time of writing the
damage has not been fully assessed as the car is not back in school,
however it is pretty severe and enough for us not to be able to attend
the Rockingham Heat and potentially not to race the car again.
We are unsure about our future plans now although our new car is still
under construction, this was primarily to allow some of the taller
drivers to be able to race and was not really expected to be a full
contender. Hopefully we can have a meeting with all those involved in
the Greenpower project at KJS and see what is feasible for the future.
UNIVERSITY VISIT
As they started their A2 studies, the
year 13 biologists visited York University
Biology department and participated in
a whole-day workshop investigating the
response of Drosophila to changes in
temperature. The students enjoyed
the opportunity to experience science in
a university environment and to use
new equipment and techniques.
Climate Science Celebration - National Railway Museum
A group of King James's students attended the Climate Science Celebration
event at the National Railway Museum on the 2nd July. The event was a
celebration of all the hard work that the 60 schools involved in this national
project have put in throughout the year.
The project involved students organising and running an event to promote
awareness about climate change. The students really enjoyed the celebration
event, which included a disco, steam train ride, an awards ceremony and other
entertainment. They even won a prize (a mini digital microscope) for the
event attended by most people!

MORE NEWS FROM AROUND THE SCHOOL
This year the Young Enterprise team, ‘Distinct’, did exceptionally well; picking up 3 prizes out of the 6 that were available!
These included “Best Customer Service”, “Best Presentation”
and “Best Company and Finance Report”. Throughout the
course of the year ‘Distinct’ had a tremendous impact on the
community; running workshops and educating the younger generation about recycling and the environment. This had such an effect that two members, Zara Asher (MD) and Jack
Routledge (Co Sales Director), received letters of commendation from the local MP, Andrew Jones.
Tom Morris (Co Finance Director) had the following to say about his experience:
“I feel that I took a lot away from the experience, developing skills but also getting to know some people I may
have not known as well as I would have done before.”
Zara Asher (MD) had the following to say about her experience:
“Young Enterprise is a great opportunity to take part in and although it was stressful at times, it has definitely
been worthwhile. Being able to control all aspects of business has allowed members of Distinct to develop practical business and thinking skills which will prove to be valuable in the future. By including participation in the
Young Enterprise competition on personal statements and CV's it allows universities, colleges and employers to
see that we have been proactive and are willing to work hard. I would recommend Young Enterprise to anyone.”
All members of ‘Distinct’ said they shared Zara’s view whole heartedly and in the words of their very charismatic
Co Sales Director, Jack Routledge - “If anyone is thinking about doing Young Enterprise, don’t just think about it;
jump in!”

SIXTH FORM ELECTIONS
Congratulations to Year 13 students Zara Asher and Scott Stockdale, who have been elected Head Girl and Head Boy for the
coming year. As well as representing Sixth Form students and leading Sixth Form Council they will also be responsible for
chairing the main School Council.
Zara and Scott will now head the Sixth Form Council, made up of another six Year 13 students plus four Year 12 students
who will be elected after the summer.
YEAR 13 LEAVERS
The departing Year 13 students ended their time here
in style. The Leavers’ Assembly on May 24 provided an
upbeat finale, with music, street dancing, a comedy
double act and impressive farewell speeches from
Head Girl Charlotte Whiteley and Head Boy Mark
Smithells, all topped off with a rocked-up version of the
school song!
Then with A2 exams finally over they celebrated at
their Leavers’ Ball. The event, at Harrogate’s Majestic
Hotel, featured a three-course meal, disco, official
event photographer, and, for the first time, a photo
booth, which proved massively popular. There were a
few fun awards, but formalities and speeches were
kept to a minimum as the year group enjoyed a final
KJS night.

SIXTH FORM LONDON TRIP
After a break last year due to the Olympics, the Sixth Form London trip was back on again this year. A group of
around 40 students and four staff left early on Tuesday July 2nd and returned late on the Thursday night, having
enjoyed an action-packed three days. They had a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of Parliament, with a look
at the Commons and Lords and time with local MP Andrew Jones; a choice of visits to the British Museum, the
National History Museum, the V&A or the Tate Modern; a river trip and London Eye ride; a South Bank treasure
hunt; a night at a West End show – students opted for either Wicked or Les Misérables; time to wander round
Covent Garden and on the last afternoon free time to explore further – or go shopping!
This trip has been an annual favourite for Sixth Formers for many years and with accommodation in student
halls at Imperial College they had a brief insight into university living as well as enjoying the capital.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Year 11 have just completed their week of Work Experience at the beginning of July, once again it has been very successful
from both the students and employers perspectives. It is a testament to how well the programme works that employers are
happy to take King James’s students’ year on year and provide them with the opportunity gain new skills and confidence.
If any parents would be willing to take a student next year for Work Experience please contact the Careers Department.
SUMMER WORK PLACEMENT
One of our Year 13 students has been selected to join TSYS for a summer work placement at their International
Data Centre in Knaresborough.
For the second year running the local business, part of the global company that handles payment services, came
into school to offer all our final year students the chance to apply for a paid two-week programme giving them
real hands-on business experience.
The application process, run by HR Advisor Vanessa Lewis, was just like that for other TSYS posts, with applicants submitting their CV and a cover letter by email and three of them then being invited for a full interview.
All our applicants gained valuable experience of the job selection process, and were given constructive feedback
after interview.
Vanessa Lewis said she was impressed with the standard of all our candidates, but Oliver Briscombe came
through as the strongest and is now looking forward to his placement in the summer holidays

MORE NEWS FROM AROUND THE SCHOOL
Farewell to Year 11
The Year 11 Leavers´ Assembly took place on Friday 24th May hosted by Miss Baker, Learning Manager. It was an emotional
celebration of the students´ five years at King James´s School: a jam-packed 90 minutes filled with both tears and laughter.
Highlights included musical items performed by some
of the year group´s talented students: Jonny Vaux,
Becky Bowe and Josh Roebuck, Natalie Rea and Lily
Walker, Briony Sayers, Joe Brennan, Will McKenzie and
Matt Alloway. The tutors made their own musical
contribution, performing a song for the students that
they had written themselves.
The assembly drew to a close with some humorous awards, a short farewell from Miss Baker and a loud and proud rendition
of the school song.
The final goodbye was done in
style on the evening of Thursday
June 27. Despite dull and damp
conditions, the arrivals down the
red carpet were colourful,
glamorous and unique.
Students enjoyed food and drink
throughout the evening, had the
opportunity to have a professional
photograph taken as a memento
of the special occasion and the
dance floor was busy all night with students enjoying the music from both DJ Dent and live band Tweak.
BBC SUMMER GOOD FOOD SHOW - JUNE 2013
Year 9 (now Year 10) Food Technology and Catering students visited the Good Food Show at Birmingham NEC.
There was a fabulous array of different Foods from around the World as well as lots of new innovative product
ideas and inspiration for the kitchen.
We visited the super theatre to meet the baking guru the one and only Mary Berry, and her sidekick Paul Hollywood! Highlights of the day included: Meeting Larkin Cen (Masterchef Winner 2013), getting our cookery books
signed by the lovely Rachel Allen and, of course, stuffing ourselves on all the wonderful food and drink! A fab day
was had by all.
Year 10 Catering Students
As mentioned earlier in this newsletter, the year 10 Catering Students
catered for 140 hungry Senior Citizens at the annual Summer Tea Party.
What a team!
Everyone worked really hard to produce a fabulous spread. The students
then waited on tables to get a real taste of what it is like to be a contract
caterer and to work Front Of House! Thank You to Mrs Walker who
helped to run the event with Mrs G.
