1912 #34 Nightgown Envelope -- Pochette Pour Linge de Nuit
1912 #34 Nightgown Envelope -- Pochette Pour Linge de Nuit This object is essential in a trousseau looked after. After having aired, during one hour or two, the nightgown, one folds it and one places it in its envelope; and when this one is well embroidered, one leaves it on the bed, once this last is made. This small envelope is made from only one piece being 31cm long and 19cm wide. The fold of the hem has one centimeter. It is necessary, before sewing it, to embroider it. The drawing is transferred with the pounce or the blue greasy paper [dressmakers’ tracing paper], then it is marked out with white cotton thread to prevent its fading. The motif of the top is copied at one of the ends of the band; that of the bottom, at the other end. If one wants to embroider it in colors, -- which would be very graceful – one will make the forget-me-nots pale blue, the leaves and the stems in green. The inscription, in blue a little more vivid or, if one prefers it, of the same color as the forget-me-nots. One can also embroider the whole in white. The embroidery finished, one will make a framing in color as the model indicates. This ornament is composed simply of points de diable forming rectangles. If one has embroidered the motifs in white, one will make the framing in red. If one has embroidered in colors, one will make it in blue. One folds up the bottom of the band then in order to form a pocket which one sews on the wrong side. The remainder of the band is folded back in order to let show the embroidery of the part already folded up. Under the two bows of ribbon in windmill shapes, one puts snaps. To embroider, make use of bright coton a broder “A la Croix” Cartier Bresson, CB #4. Translation copyright 2010 Deirdre Gawne. Not for sale. www.dressingbleuette.com
