Like every year around this time, the Loreley Singers
had their Rummage and Bake Sale. This time the hours
where changed, ending at 1:30 p.m. from a 9 a.m start.
A rummage sale always draws people from all over Oshawa to our Club house, and it did again this time. This
is excellent advertising for our Club, and maybe gets
people interested in Club Loreley.
The Youth Dancers Benefit Dance, with the crowning of
Miss Loreley and Mini Miss, was a huge success. A sell
out crowd was amazed with the performance by the
Youth Dancers.

Wieder verging ein schönes Wochenende mit vielen

Wie auch in jedem Jahr hatten die Loreley Sänger wieder ihren Rummagge & Bake Sale. Allerdings hatten
sich diesmal die Zeiten geändert, nur noch von 9 Uhr
morgens bis 13.30 Uhr. Dieser Basar bringt immer
Leute von ganz Oshawa zusammen. Da viele wahrscheinlich noch nie von unserem Klub gehört hatten,
war es eine sehr gute Werbung.

President’s report cont’d:
My wife and myself had the pleasure to be in attendance and enjoyed every minute of it. I thought it was
an excellent idea to crown those two lovely ladies at the
benefit dance, so everyone was aware who was
elected. Congratulations to the new Miss Loreley,
Elizabeth Gifford, and Mini Miss Julie Otte. Also, our
congratulations to the two young outgoing ladies Lori
Pflanzer and Krista Kacaba who have done a terrific job
representing Club Loreley at many functions. As I said
in my brief speech, it takes a lot of energy and hard
work to be where you are now. An excellent performance at the Manoeverball in Brantford were the results,
and just looking at those smiling faces of parents and
board members, showed everyone how proud they
were. I can hardly wait to see our girls perform at Fiesta
Week, our gratitude to the board members under the
leadership of Holly Henninger, and the entire Youth
Dancers .
Mother’s Day, we can easily say, was a disaster. Just a
handful of people were in attendance, we have to feel
sorry for chef Trevor and his staff, there was so much
work and preparation put into this event, and it’s hardly
worthwhile for the kitchen and the club. We have to find
out, what caused that slump, maybe too many restaurants offering Mother’s Day brunches with better deals,
or our members are spending their time with their families. For next year, we will set a deadline for reservations, and if our quota is not satisfactory, we will cancel
the event in sufficient time, so that everyone with a reservation has plenty of time to rearrange for another location.
Preis Skat, yes it might have been too late in the season, at the end of May, people are interested in other
things, cottage, garden etc. The next Preis Skat will be
held on Sep. 15th at 11 a.m. and from there we will see,
if we only are able to draw a few people, then the Preis
Skat will be cancelled. So we do our part, but you also
have to do your part to attend.
Clean up day on June 9th, had many volunteers under
leader Joe Friedrich, and started at 9 a.m sharp. We
knew a lot of work was waiting for us. We checked our
pine trees and did some cleaning, and painted our flag
poles (without a cherry-picker). But hardly a problem
with so much skill and determination from everyone. It
is amazing how much needs to be done in order to
have your place in excellent shape. This is one of the
reasons a clean up day is of such importance to our
club.
An excellent lunch was prepared by Gerda and Wanda,
with a few drops of liquid waiting for us, and everyone
enjoyed the hour after a hard day of work. I was really
proud to see so many of our members, with no hesitation, follow up on the invitation for volunteer

wer die jungen Damen waren. Unser Glückwunsch der
Miss Loreley Elizabeth Gifford und Mini-Miss Loreley
Julie Otte, auch unser Dank an die beiden Vorgängerinnen – Lori Pflanzer als Miss Loreley, und Krista Kacaba als Mini-Miss, die den Klub so hervorragend bei
allen Gelegenheiten vertreten haben. Wie ich in meiner
kurzen Ansprache betonte, ist es mit viel Arbeit verbunden, so ein Ziel zu erreichen. Eine grandioser Auftritt
beim Manöverball in Brantford ergab erstklassige Ergebnisse und es spiegelte sich in den Gesichtern der
Mitglieder und insbesondere der Eltern, wie stolz sie
auf ihre Nachkömmlinge waren. Wir sind alle gespannt
auf die Fiestawoche und können kaum erwarten, bis es
soweit ist. Der Dank des Vorstandes geht an alle Vorstandsmitglieder der K.G. und die Jugendtänzer mit
ihrer Vorsitzenden Holly Henninger.
Der Muttertagsbrunch war eine Katastrophe, was gar
nicht so leicht zu erklären ist. Nur wenig mehr als 30
Personen waren anwesend und man musste mit Chef
Trevor fühlen, denn viel Arbeit war mit den Vorbereitungen verbunden und weder für die Küche noch für den
Klub hatte sich die Mühe gelohnt.. Vielleicht werden zu
viele Muttertagsbrunches in Oshawa veranstaltet (mit
günstigeren Preisen), oder viele Eltern verbringen den
Tag zu Hause mit ihrer Familie. Fest steht auf jeden
Fall, dass im nächsten Jahr eine Anmeldefrist gesetzt
wird und falls wir unsere Quote nicht erreichen, wird der
Muttertagsbrunch abgesagt - natürlich früh genug, um
noch andere Buchungen durchführen zu können.
Der Preisskat war auch eine Enttäuschung, das Datum
spielte vielleicht eine Rolle, denn gegen Ende Mai stehen andere Sachen auf dem Programm, wie Gartenarbeit, das Wochenendhaus usw. Jedenfalls veranstalten
wir noch einen Preisskat am 15. September und wenn
der wieder so schlecht besucht ist, wird der Preisskat
eingestellt. Der Vorstand tut seine Pflicht, indem er ihn
veranstaltet, deshalb ist es auch eure Pflicht, dabei zu
sein.
Der Säuberungstag am 9. Juni konnte auf viele Freiwillige zählen und Joe Friedrich war natürlich glücklich
darüber. Pünktlich um 9 Uhr ging es los und es lag eine
Menge Arbeit vor uns: Die Nadeltannen an der westlichen Seite mussten überprüft und gesäubert werden,
dann mussten noch die Fahnenstangen gestrichen
werden und das nur mit einer Leiter, gar nicht so einfach. Aber mit unseren Fachkräften und unserer Entschlossenheit war das kein Problem.

The memorial for founding member and former
president Josef (Jupp) Stäger was well attended.
Sandwiches and coffee & cake were provided and
served by our Ladies Auxiliary. Also, a cash bar
was available for our convenience. Thanks to everyone who were so kind to help out. Margret and
her family really appreciated the effort we, Club
Loreley, made in memory of Josef Stäger.

On May
we had a special afternoon with a
presentation by Mr. Schmidt about the new product “Vitaflex”. It was held in our members’ lounge,
and about 29 people were in attendance, with coffee and cake sponsored by Mr. Schmidt. Vitaflex
is a German invention patented all over the world,
and also in Canada by “Mathern G.M.B.H. from
Philipp Thal, Owner Mrs. Martha Bohn. Mr.
Schmidt. With an excellent presentation, he explained how their product can help with reducing
joint pain and can also help against sleep disorders. Many questions were asked by our members and guests, and common sense would tell
you, there must be something right about Vitaflex.
We are able, and if enough members are interested, to attend another “VITAFLEX” session
sometime in the fall. The maximum number is 30,
and it will be held in the members’ lounge. It’s
free, and coffee & cake will be served for your
convenience. If anyone would like to attend,

The ones who have attended the first session are
excluded.

Das waren nur einige von vielen Arbeiten. Man kann es gar
nicht fassen, was sich so alles im Jahr anhäuft und darum ist
es so wichtig, dass wir einen bestimmten Tag für die Grundreinigung festsetzen. Ein gutes Essen, das Gerda und Wanda
vorbereitet hatten, erwartete uns nach der Arbeit, natürlich
wurde es mit einem Glas Bier heruntergespült. Ich muss ehrlich gestehen, ich war wirklich erfreut darüber, dass so viele
dieser Einladung zur freiwilligen Arbeit gefolgt sind. Das heißt
mit anderen Worten, dass wir nur bei den Mitgliedern anfragen müssen, wenn wir Helfer brauchen. Ich möchte mich hiermit aufs Herzlichste bei allen Helfern bedanken, F. Kraus, T.
Haas, R. Stimmimg, K. Gores, K. Kreis, P. Hennig, P. Biller,
Bernd Vom Dorff, J. Fischer, D. Keuthen, Gerda & Wanda, H.
Albrecht und natürlich Joe Friedrich. Wir können alle stolz
darauf sein, Klub Loreley als Mitglied anzugehören, mit unserem herrlichen Klubhaus und wenn Sie das nächste Mal
wieder da sein sollten, überzeugen Sie sich persönlich mit
einem Gang durch den Garten, wie schön alles geworden ist.

Der Gedenktag für unser verstorbenes Gründungsmitglied
und einstigen Vorsitzenden ( Jupp Stäger ) war sehr gut besucht. Kaffee, Kuchen und Butterbrote wurden von der
Frauengruppe vorbereitet und serviert, auch hatten wir die
Bar geöffnet für andere Getränke. Unser Dank an alle, die so
freundlich waren und aushalfen, Margret sowie die Söhne
Christian und Raymond sagten nur Gutes über Klub Loreley
und bedankten sich persönlich bei allen Anwesenden.
Am 18. Mai um 15 Uhr war unsere Members Lounge der
Schauplatz für eine interessante Präsentation mit kostenlosem Kaffee und Kuchen. Herr Schmidt, Vertreter von “VITAFLEX” , einem deutschen Produkt
der Mathern
GmbH im Philipps Thal, Eigentümerin Frau Martha Bohn, erklärte fachkundig, wie das Mittel anzuwenden ist und welche
Vorteile es mit sich bringt. Es hat mit Magnetfeldern zu tun
und hilft Menschen, die unter rheumatischen Schmerzen und
Schlaflosigkeit leiden. Natürlich wurden von den Anwesenden
viele Fragen gestellt, die alle auf kompetente Weise beantwortet wurden. Eine Vorführung der Schlafdecke aus Lamahaaren mit magnetischen Streifen war der Höhepunkt und
hat wahrscheinlich einige Pessimisten überzeugt. Jeder Teilnehmer bekam eine Packung mit magnetischen Pflastern und
einige bestellten sofort eine von den Schlafdecken.
Wir können zur jeder Zeit noch mal eine Vorführung in Sachen “VITAFLEX” im Herbst abhalten, falls genug Nachfrage
bestehen sollte. Mehr als 30 Personen sind nicht erlaubt und
wird wieder in der Members Lounge abgehalten. Kaffee und
Kuchen werden kostenlos serviert und sollten Sie Interesse
haben, bitte rufen Sie mich persönlich an, unter der # 905576-8664. Die Leute, die bei der ersten Präsentation dabei
waren, sind natürlich ausgeschlossen.
Nun etwas ganz Besonderes, Herr Schmidt von VITAFLEX
hat einen Ausflug nach “ Niagara on the Lake” geplant für
Mitglieder und Freunde vom Klub Loreley.
Then to Niagara Falls, everyone on his own for approximately 3 hrs. and at around 6 p.m. we will return to Oshawa. The price, with eveything included,
is $25.00 P.P. The bus can take 56 people, 45 are
needed to make this trip possible. Please register at
the members lounge with Wanda Friedrich, or

Club Loreley will be closed again right after Fiesta
Week for two weeks, and will be open with kitchen
service on July 12th. Activities by active groups can
continue, and are not affected by club closure.
July and August are pretty near free of activities,
except for some active groups with their own picnic
in one way or another. I know for a fact the Rifle
Picnic will be held on Saturday, July 28th and we
expect a big crowd. Lawn tournament, and presentation to our champions, are on the agenda, and of
course barbecue, coffee and cake. (See the rifle
report)
Actually only one event during those two months is
planned by Club Loreley. On Sunday, August 12th is
our Sommerfest. The usual activities, like games for
children, shooting range, horse shoe pitch etc. are
available. Of course a big Tombola with excellent
prizes is waiting for everyone, and good food from
the kitchen with plenty of liquids (beer on tap). A
day to meet old friends, and maybe have a chance
to connect with new ones. A day, a lot of parents
and grandparents are looking forward to, to show
their children and grandchildren our premises, and
make them aware of how much work (Mom & Dad,
Opa & Oma) have put into this place over the
years, so they have a future to carry on with the activities, and keep our club alive (see the back
page).
In our last edition, I mentioned having a brief report
about our web-site. Karl, our editor and also web
site specialist, is still working on changes, updates,
and so on to make it easier for everyone. I will follow up in our next news paper, but if you should
have questions about the web site, don’t hesitate to
ask Karl about it, he will help you as best as he can.
This will be my report for the next two months, I
wish everyone pleasant holidays, and whatever you
do, play it on the safe side. To everyone, who is suffering due to illness, a speedy recovery, and we will
see you all at our Sommerfest.

Der Klub ist gleich nach der Fiesta Woche für 2 Wochen
geschlossen und öffnet seine Türen wieder am Donnerstag,
dem 12. Juli. Untergruppen können weiterhin ihren Aktivitäten
nachgehen und die Räumlichkeiten nutzen.
Juli und August sind die Monate, in denen fast keine Aktivitäten stattfinden, außer einigen Buchungen. Untergruppen
werden wahrscheinlich ihre Picknicks im Klub veranstalten,
die Schützengruppe am 28. Juli und wir erwarten ein volles
Haus. Ein Lawn Tournament und die Auszeichnung der Meister stehen auf der Agenda. Natürlich gibt es Speisen vom
Grill, Kaffee, Kuchen und Bier vom Fass. ( Mehr im

In diesen beiden Monaten ist eigentlich nur eine Veranstaltung vorgesehen, das “SOMMERFEST” am Sonntag, dem
12. August. Wie auch in den letzten Jahren wird es Spiele für
die Kinder geben, sowie einen Schießstand mit ausgesuchten
Preisen, Horse shoe pitch und die große Tombola, also für
jeden etwas. Chef Trevor wird uns mit Grillgerichten
verzücken und nicht zu vergessen “ Bier vom Fass”. Dieser
Tag gibt vielen die Gelegenheit, sich mit alten Freunden zu
treffen oder neue Freundschaften zu schließen. Es ist auch
ein Anlass, Ihren Kindern und Enkeln das Grundstück mit
Klubhaus zu zeigen und zu erklären, wie viel Arbeit damit
verbunden war, um Ihnen für die Zukunft eine Bleibe zu erhalten. (siehe Reklame Seite 23).
Versprochen hatte ich in der letzten Ausgabe, über unsere
Website zu berichten. Karl, unser Webmaster, arbeitet noch
an Änderungen und Verbesserungen. Ich werde aber alles in
der nächsten Zeitung nachholen. Sollten Sie jedoch Fragen
haben in Bezug auf die Website, fragen Sie Karl. Er wird Sie
auf jeden Fall mit Ratschlägen unterstützen.

Abfahrt ist am Montag, dem 16. Juli, 7.30 Uhr vom Klub Loreley in einem modernen Bus mit allen Schikanen. Unser erster
Stop ist das Holiday Inn, in St. Chatarines zum Brunch, dann
weiter zur Weintour zum Weingut REIF, Weinprobe usw. Jeder Teilnehmer bekommt eine Flasche Wein Jahrgang 2007,

Summer is here which means another season has come to an end. The end of our season was a
busy one with many things happening. Our Pokel finals were shot. In Regular shooting Jakob
Fischer won with a score of 155 over Bernd v om Dorff who scored 144. In the Senior Pokal Rolf
Ebenreth scored 178 to beat Karl Gores who scored 158. Congratulations to the winners.

Heimatsanger Report - Christel Petrowski
Just a month ago everything was blah! Trees were leafless, gardens plain and lifeless, and in matter of weeks, suddenly everything is in full bloom. Isn’t this amazing how nature can turn the scenery around in such a short time? Well, let’s enjoy this beautiful weather as long as it is here. Remember two more months from now summer will be over. Scary isn’t it?
Today Peter and I like to thank all participants and helpers who did such great job on Heimatabend
for their involvement, and their time spent to make this evening again such a success. We had a
wonderful program. I believe it was one of the best programs we ever had put together. The whole
evening went very well. We started precisely at the announced time at 6:30pm, there was no delay or waiting; it all
went extremely smooth.
The Heimatsänger greeted the guests with a special welcome song; thereafter Vice President Edwin Albrecht
opened the evening with a short humorous speech. We would like to thank Edwin Albrecht who did act in place of
Ernst Stader who had another important commitment on the same date, and therefore could not attend this club function.
Peter Stenz our back-up MC did a flawless presentation, two thumbs up Peter, for a job well done.
Heinz Ottinger and the Heimatsänger Choir received a big hand for their performance and the nice selection of
songs. The Heimatsänger say,” Thanks”, to Heinz, and let him know that they always have fun at practice, and appreciate the patience he shows them all year ‘round.
A special edition this year was our lovely Miss Loreley, Lori Pflanzer who welcomed everyone. Thank you, Lori for
your speech.
A thank you to the Kinder Tots, who performed nicely; they too received a big hand for their dancing presentation.
Johanna and John Uhlmann, we like to express our many thanks to both of you, you’re always there for us, no matter what. Thank you for both your performances.

Of course here comes a big hand and many “Thanks” to all the Heimatsänger performers who spiced up the program with eight wonderful additional acts. We had an accordion trio performing, and a potpourri for everyone to join in.
The audience enjoyed humorous plays, poems, stories some presented in Austrian and Saxon dialects and a musical
comedy I truly don’t know what else we could have added to the program.
Gerda Koepp who works always in the background is often not appreciated enough for all the work she does, but we
certainly did appreciate all her help and like to let her know it today, by saying “Thank You Gerda”.
Now to all the busy helpers, unnamed in this report, please accept my apology for not mentioning each and everyone
of you here by name; there were to many of you and each one was equally important, no matter how big or small your
job was. Thanks to all of you for your involvement and help!

Fortsetzung und Ende : ‘Flug der Junkers’

Der Sechszylinder läuft wie ein Uhrwerk, und gibt nicht den
geringsten Grund zur Besorgnis. Die Sonne strahlt durch die
zahlreichen Löcher in der weißen Dunstwand und zaubert
herrliche Farbenreflexe auf das Meer. Das nun folgende Mittagessen besteht wie das Frühstück aus Bouillion,Tee und
Sandwiches, dazu ein paar Bananen und Schoko-lade. Anschließend sitzt Fitzmaurice wieder am Steuerknüppel und
Köhl schläft so gut es geht um sich auf die bevorstehende
Nachtschicht vorzubereiten. Der endlose Ozean liegt noch vor
ihnen ruhig als wäre es ein Inlandssee. Warme Sonnenstrahlen fallen in die Kanzel, und am späten Nachmittag setzt ein
scharfer Südostwind ein. Um diesen voll zu ihrem Vorteil auszunutzen, gehen sie auf eine Höhe von 600 Metern. Ab und
zu wechseln kalte Regenschauer mit leichtem Schneefall. Noch ist es möglich diesem örtlichen Niederschlag aus dem
Wege zu gehen. Nach einigen Stunden bemerken sie, daß der Wind stärker geworden ist und vom Nordwesten weht.
Auf dieser gewaltigen Entfernung finden sie kaum eine Wetterlage, die nicht mehrmals wechselt. Köhl nimmt eine leichte
Kurskorrektur nach Norden vor und drosselt den Motor; dann geht er mit flachen Sinkflug bis nahe an die Wasseroberfläche heran. Die graugrünen Wogen sind jetzt kaum mehr als 10 Meter von dem Flugzeug entfernt. Ständig überwachen sie den Benzin-verbrauch. Die speziell für den Flug ausgerüstete Maschiene hat 14 Treibstoftanks und eine
Kabine. Mit der Hand wird von einem Behälter zum anderen gepumpt um stehts das Gewicht gleichmäßig zu verteilen.
Als die in Irland gestellten Uhren 9:30 abends zeigten wäre es dort stockdunkel gewesen. Hier aber steht die Sonne
noch immer hoch am Himmel. Bis zum Einbruch der Dämmerung haben sie dann für weitere vier Stunden angenehmes
Flugwetter. Danach zieht die untergehensde Sonne einen roten Strich am Horizont, der sich bald darauf in einem weißen
Feld auflöst. Mit unbewegten Gesichtern starren sie in diese Richtung wo nun vor ihnen gigantische dunkle Wolkenformationen erscheinen. Wenn es nicht gelingt hieran vorbeizukommen, so ist mit einer gefährlichen Vereisung der Tragflächen zu rechnen. Köhl versucht über die drohende Wolkenwand hinweg zu fliegen. Doch in 2,000 Meter Höhe sehen
sie in der Flugrichtung noch eine zweite Wolkenschicht.
Jetzt bleibt keine andere Wahl, als bis dicht unter die Wolken herab zu gehen. Mit gedrosseltem Motor und geringer
Geschwindigkeit läßt Köhl die Maschine durch die Wolken gleiten. Unten wird es dunkel - ein Zeichen dafür, daß die
Wasseroberfläche näher kommt. Es geht durch Wolkenfetzen und bald befinden sie sich etwa 50 Meter über dem
Ozean. Hier unten peicht sofort ein heftiger Regen auf die Fenster der Kabine. In diesem stürmischen Wetter fliegen sie
dicht unter der Wolkendecke dahin und sehen unter sich die gewaltigen Wellenberge mit den gewaltigen Schaumzungen. Mit dem scharfen Strahl der Taschenlampe tastet Köhl die Konturen der Tragfläsche ab; um nachzusehen ob sich
dort Eis angsetzt hat. Es ist alles in Ordnung. Vor dem Abflug haben die Warte die Maschiene mit Öl und Paraffin bestrichen, um Vereisung zu vermeiden. Die Zeit rinnt dahin. Zwanzig Stunden sind sie bereits unterwegs und Neufundland muß etwa 300 Meilen von ihnen liegen. Kompaß und Uhr sind die einzigten Navigations- instrumente die ihnen zur
Verfügung stehen. Dann und wann ist der Polarstern zu erken-nen, nach dem sie sich richten. Zu gefährlich wäre es hier
in Küstennähe zu tief zu fliegen.
Vorsichtig bringt Köhl den Motor auf Steigflugleistung und geht wieder auf eine Höhe von 2,000 Metern. Die Wolkendecke hat sich inzwischen aufgelockert und auch der Sturm ist etwas abgeflaut. Endlich zieht die Morgendämmerung
heran und am Boden laßen sich die ersten Konturen erkennen. Als sich glühend rot die Sonne erhebt, sehen sie daß sie
Land unter sich haben.Es geht über endlose Schnee bedeckte Wälder. Ǜberall ist es das gleiche in der Flugrichtung, ein
einsames unbewohntes Land. Zugefrohrene Flüsse, steile Berge, einige kahl andere bewaldet und verschneit.
Schließlich erkennen sie eine Küste, ein einzelnes Haus und daneben einen Leuchtturm. Sofort drosselt Köhl den Motor
und fliegt zwei Runden um den Leuchtturm. Sie erkennen, dass es sich um eine Insel handelt. ”Greenly Island „ wie sie
später
Durch das Motorengeäusch alarmiert, erscheinen die Bewohner und winken. Die“ Ju“ landet auf dem Eis und rollt kurz
aus, bis die Räder etwas einsinken. Das Frühlingswetter hatte einige Tage zuvor den Fluß etwas aufgetaut, woraufhin
das Wasser erneut gefrohren war. Das Fahrwerk war durch die obere dünnere Eisschicht gebrochen und ruhte nun auf
der dickeren Eissdecke darunter. Leider können sie nicht von hier nach New York fliegen wie sie es eigentlich vorgehabt
hatten. Doch auf alle Fälle war die erste Ozeanüberquerung mit einem Flugzeug vom Osten zum Westen gelungen. Sie
befinden sich hier in einer kanadischen Provinz Quebec, auf einer Insel im Saint Lawrence Strom, 300 Meilen nordöstlich
von Quebec City

Die Spitzen der Luftschraube sind leicht verbogen und die Achse des Fahrgestells gebrochen. Sonst ist die Maschine
heil geblieben und wird nun für die Nacht verankert. Köhl umwickelt den Motor mit Säcken und läßt das Kühlwasser ablaufen damit bei der Kälte keine Schäden entstehen. Danach begeben sich die drei Männer zu dem Haus, wo sie von
dem gastlichenLeuchtturmwärter LeTamplier untergebracht werden. Hier schreiben sie zuerst Telegramme zu ihre Familie und Freunde in New York City, die auf ihre Ankunft warten.die Junkers- Vertretung send ihnen sofort ein Flugzeug mit
einem neuen Fahrgestellund den Mechaniker Ernst Köppen, der die Luftschraube in der kleinen Schmiede des Leuchtturmes ausrichtet. Die Bremen wird wieder flugbereit,gemacht aber auf der riesigen Eisdecke kann jetzt wegen des eingesetzenden Tauwetters nicht mehr gestartet werden. Am !23 April erscheint eine von der Stadt New york gecharterte
dreimotorige
Ford Maschine um sie abzuholen. Diese Flugzeug landete mit Kufen auf dem Eis und bringt sie mit Zwischenlandungen
in Murray Bay und Quebec City nach New York. Hier auf dem Curtiss Field empfägt sie der Bütgermeister Jimmy Walker
persönich mit seinem Gefolge.Auf Kosten der Stadt bringt man sie im Ritz Carlton Hotel unter. Für die nächsten ist ein

The four clocks behind the reception desk of Berlin's new budget hotel Ostel show
the hour in Moscow, Berlin, Havana, and Beijing. Time, however, appears to have
stopped here sometime before 1989, when communism was still entrenched in all
four capitals.
The Ostel offers a renewed whiff of life in the former German Democratic Republic,
welcoming travelers with portraits of communist leaders adorning the walls. Furnishings – except for mattresses, bed linens, sink and toilets – are the real thing,
dug up by founders Daniel Helbig and Guido Sand from flea markets, friends, family and eBay. But Helbig made clear it was not about pining for a return to the
police-state.
“We had the idea of preserving a bit of GDR culture ... (but) we are not crying for
the East German regime,” said Helbig, who grew up in East Berlin and experienced
its restrictions on freedom of expression and movement first hand.
Germany was divided into two after World War II, the capitalist West and communist East, and nowhere was the split
more acutely felt than Berlin, where communist authorities built a wall through the city to prevent its citizens from leaving. The wall fell in 1989, and Germany was officially reunified in 1990.
The Ostel, which opened on May Day – the traditional worker's holiday under communism – represents a broader
phenomenon known as Ostalgie, or fascination with life in the former East Germany. Ostalgie, like Ostel, is a play on
the German word for east – ost.
Ostalgie primarily focused on communist-era pop culture, including TV shows such as “Sandman” that several generations of children grew up with, and the Trabant automobile, an East German clunker that families waited for years to
be able to own under communism.
The Ostel, located in an old Communist-era building just steps from the East Side Gallery, the longest remaining
stretch of the Berlin Wall, takes pains to be as authentic as possible.
Hotel guests can have an experience right out of the 2003 hit film “Goodbye Lenin!” in which a young man tries to
spare his mother the shock of learning of the Berlin Wall's fall after she awakes from a coma by supplying her with the
sparse comforts of life in the GDR.
There are rooms that replicate bedrooms from typical East German apartments, from about $50. At the other end of
the scale, $12-per-bed Pioneer Camp dorm rooms feature two bunk beds and spartan living conditions evocative of
the summer camps of the Free German Youth, the party youth organization.
Socialist Unity Party functionaries such as party General Secretary Erich Honecker and Prime Minister Horst Sindermann peer down from portraits in most rooms, giving the impression that one is under constant surveillance.
Helbig and Sand plan on expanding their East German hotel project with a series of eight East German-style vacation
apartments near the Ostel.
Ostel employee Liliana Lehmann, 25, whose early childhood was spent under communism in East Berlin, said the hotel was a break from the bustle of today's capitalist capital.
“We try to create a community feeling,” she said. “It's a contrast to today's dog-eat-dog world.”
The nostalgia vibe appealed to one traveler from the east German city of Rostock, who wrote in the guestbook: “Great
place and many memories from back then!”
