The Journey – 1916 The Texas Agricultural and Mechanical College opened its School of Veterinary Medicine 28 years after the state of Texas had funded a Department of Veterinary Sciences in 1888 with a $2500 grant. Dr. Mark Francis was hired as the first appointed faculty member. Dr. Francis made his mark in veterinary medicine when he proved the tick was the cause of Texas cattle fever and developed inoculations to save livestock and he was subsequently named the founding dean. With 13 students in the program, it became possible to earn a veterinary degree in the state of Texas. On that foundation, CVM has advanced over the last century to becoming a world-class institution. Houston PetTalk Magazine 13 “What we see is that easily three fourths of a veterinary student. Veterinary Pathobiology – Offers degrees in Genetics, Microbiology, Pathology, and Parasitology Veterinary Physiology & Pharmacology – In addition to teaching, the primary research focus areas within the department include toxicology, reproductive physiology, pharmacology, and cardiovascular physiology Large Animal Clinical Sciences – Provides teaching and services including emergency services & critical care and a food animal section. Small Animal Clinical Sciences – The Department of Veterinary Small Animal Clinical Sciences has three major missions: education, patient care, and scholarship. The environment at the center is very much “like home”. The animals have plenty of space to roam and play while getting excellent care and attention from the staff which includes three livein students. National Center for Foreign Animal and Zoonotic Disease Defense – The Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence founded the center in 2004 to develop products to protect the United States from the introduction of foreign animal and zoonotic diseases. Seventy-five percent of emerging infectious diseases that affect humans is of animal origin, thereby underlining the need for vigilance in this arena. The FAZD Center primarily focuses on diseases that pose catastrophic risks to human health and agriculture. Additionally, of interest to pet owners, is that the National Institute of Health sponsors studies focusing on dogs as a model for clinical trials and therefore access to drug treatments that are very expensive may be offered for free to trial participants. Making the research and state-of-the-art treatments possible at CVM means that the facility needs to have the latest in equipment. Chemotherapy treatments are given daily and CVM has recently upgraded their Radiology equipment and MRI equipment. In addition, CVM’s Onlcology Department collaborates with M.D. Anderson Cancer Center where cutting edge work is being performed as it relates to the human/dog model. The Oncology Department treats about 800-1000 cases per year on a referral basis from DVM’s. Patients come from all over the U.S. and are primarily canines and felines. At CVM’s Small Animal Rehabilitation Department, a range of services are offered to combat ailments such as hip dysplasia, osteoarthritis, neurological conditions, weight loss, postop surgeries and sports related injuries. Working to combat a variety of ailments, the Rehab group has a number of modalities and equipment at their disposal. The aquatic treadmill is a great method for allowing pets to exercise while encouraging range of motion without supporting their full body weight. Another treatment is the therapeutic ultrasound, which provides deep tissue heating to assist with stretching of injured muscles and mobility of diseased or injured joints. From therapeutic exercises such as stretching and strengthening to the creation of home exercise programs or weight loss management, providing pets with rehabilitative services can mean the difference between comfort or living with chronic pain and limited mobility. Not long ago, many rehab services were not offered for pets. Thankfully, leaders such as CVM see the importance of providing such programs. Whether it be an injured or geriatric pet or possibly a sporting dog, CVM can improve their condition, thus their quality of life. We serve all PETS!
