Macon HEALTH CARE CENTER Providing Skilled Therapy 7 Days A Week 29612 KELLOGG AVE, MACON, MO • 660-385-5797 Caring for Your Elderly Parents Your mom and dad used to take care of you. Now suddenly, they are the ones who need help. Ideally, we all want our parents to be able to make their own decisions and control their own living environments. However, sometimes the struggle for independence can compromise health and safety. When this happens, it is important to know how to address your parent’s needs. First, you must recognize that your elderly parent may stubbornly refuse any help you offer. They may even deny they have a problem. Do not take this personally. Instead, try to understand their feelings. Perhaps your parent worries that their autonomy is being threatened. It is common for an older person to resist any assistance that makes them feel they are losing privacy, dignity or independence. The worst thing you can do when encouraging your parent to seek help or change their lifestyle is to make them feel powerless. Instead, keep the following suggestions in mind: • Allow them to remain in control as much as possible. Your mission should be keeping them healthy and safe, not micro-managing their life. Give options, not ultimatums. • Change takes time. Help by making the smallest changes possible that still provide the desired benefit. Don’t try to overhaul your parent’s life all at once. • Express your own feelings. By sharing your emotions and fears with your parent, you can approach necessary lifestyle changes as a team, not adversaries. When possible, give your parents the tools that will help them maintain independence or even help each other. For instance, a occupational therapist may be able to help your parents maintain or regain the strength necessary to perform some daily tasks. If they can stay active, they’ll be able function better, which will make you both happier. maconhealthcarecenter.com Come to Macon Health Care Center for all your short-term rehabilitation needs. • • • • • • • Improve daily living Total knee replacement Total hip replacement Fractures Stroke Balance and falls General weakness after hospital stay We’ll get you home quickly. SUCCESS STORIES Senior Friendly Exercise Right at Your Backdoor Gardening is an excellent form of low impact exercise for senior citizens, the disabled, and people recovering from injury. Although some heavy tasks are inappropriate for people with compromised physical ability, many others offer a great opportunity to stretch muscles, improve muscle-tone, and gently increase heart rate. Planting seeds, pulling weeds, and pruning flowers are great occupational therapy activities. Raking leaves or planting a small tree can help maintain muscle, improve your balance, and increase your heart rate. Of course, most people don’t begin gardening for physical stimulation. Young and old alike find gardening to be therapeutic for both mind and body. Yes, gardening can actually improve your mood. When you’re at peace psychologically, you generally feel better physically. With so many things that a garden offers, from color therapy and aroma therapy to the meaning of flowers, it is hard to feel blue when you are surrounded by green. Moreover, you can reap nutritional benefits by planting food you know will be local and organic. In the metro Washington, DC area peach and pear trees perform very well. Blueberry and Aronia bushes deliver powerful doses of antioxidants. Herbs like Basil, Lavender, Rosemary, Parsley, Oregano, Thyme, Peppermint, Chamomile, and Lemon Verbena soothe the senses and make wonderful teas. Many will come back perennially, adding spice to your dishes and your life, year after year. Always consult your doctor before engaging in physical activity to determine the level of exercise appropriate for you. If you hire a landscaper to perform the laborious tasks and manage the lighter garden upkeep on your own time, you can maintain a beautiful garden forever. Roll out dough into 1/4” thich sheet and use cookie cutters to cut shapes or free hand shapes. To make starfish, take 5 balls and use your thumb and pointer finger to shape and flatten into triangles. Take the triangles and combine them together, pinching the edges on both the front and back. Very important, to smooth out the edges where the pieces connect or you will get seams and lots of cracks. Use the end of a pen or paintbrush to make decorations in starfish. Sand dollars were made using circle cutter and decorated using the pen head and a butter knife. Bake at 175º on Silpat mat or parchment paper for 45 mintues to 1 hour. Let cool. When they are cool, cover your table and start painting. Let paint dry and then seal with a clear acrylic spray. (Can be framed as shown above.) F u n This Gummy Worm Punch is a perfect drink to serve on a hot summer day, not to mention perfect for bug- or mad scientist-themed birthday parties, St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween and impromptu picnics in the yard. Kids love the color and, well, get pretty excited about the *stars of this drink*, those wiggly gummy worms, too! First of all, this punch is only three ingredients: Hawaiian Punch Green Berry Rush, lemon-lime soda and gummy worms. Super simple and so easy to make in a pinch! What makes it unique is “the freezing of the gummy worms.” You start by filling each cup of a muffin tin with two gummy worms. Pour a little Hawaiian Punch into each muffin tin. Just enough so it covers the worms. If you have a few little pieces of the worms sticking out of the top of the liquid, that’s fine! Place the tin in your freezer and allow the “disks” to freeze – usually 2-3 hours is sufficient. Alright, so when you’re ready to serve the drink, fill 3/4 of the glass with the Hawaiian Punch and 1/4 of the glass with lemon-lime soda. Make sure to not fill it too full because you’re going to be dropping in one of the frozen gummy worm disks. Note: If you’re making this punch for a large group, just fill a punch bowl, following the same instructions as above – 3/4 Hawaiian Punch, 1/4 lemon-lime soda. I would make at least 12-24 frozen disks for a punch bowl. Drop the disks into individual glasses immediately before serving. If you’re looking to keep the punch, itself, cold. You could freeze some Hawaiian Punch the day before in a ring mold or in ice cube trays to add to the punch the day of the party. If you’re really adventurous, throw some worms into the mold or the smaller cubes, too! Med LA Power Recliners & Much More Depending on the size of the glass, I’ll put one to two disks in per drink. The disks sink to the bottom of the glass, cooling the punch, and in about a minute or so, the worms begin to emerge from the ice and little pieces of the ice float to the top, making the drink look like it has a little slime on top. LOVE that. Macon Health Care Center - 10 - “Caring in a Better Way, Day-by-Day” 14 m ins Skinny Mexican Grilled Corn is the perfect Summer side dish!
