Resident Of

Month
Mira “Sue” Chambers
... Sue as she prefers
to be called was born on July 5th, 1945 in Macon, MO at
the Samaritan Hospital. Her parents were the late Mr &
Mrs Bill Chambers of Macon. She is an only child. During
her childhood Sue enjoyed roller skating, swimming and
horseback riding. From a young age Sue always liked to
wear pretty clothing with matching jewelry which is still
important to her today. You will always find Sue dressed
in pretty dresses and as we call it “bling” which is her fun
jewelry!
Sue graduated from Macon High School in 1963 and went
to work at the Samaritan Hospital as a nurse’s aide. After
years of working at the hospital she went to work for Banquet Foods which is now Con-Agra Foods. Sue was employed there for over 15 years.
Sue is the Resident Council at the center and takes great pride in her job.
Some of her favorite hobbies are playing Bingo with her friends, farkle, bible study,
working with flowers and making crafts. Sue enjoys listening to gospel and country
music. Her favorite songs are “How Great Thou Art” and “Long Black Train”.
Sue also loves the holiday parties and spending time with her extended family Jack
& Phyllis Davis.
Congrats Sue on being our January Spotlight!
You are a true blessing to all who meet you!

Welcome to our Therapy Department....
PRIVATE PATIENT THERAPY ROOM
Hi, my name is Chris Himes and I was born and raised outside of Kirksville, MO on our family farm which I still work on and enjoy.
After high school I went to Linn State Technical College and graduated
with an AAS as a diesel technician. After a career change I went back to
college at Indian Hills Community College graduating with an AAS as a
Physical Therapy Assistant.
The best part of the job is working with a great clientele and being able to
help them return home or better themselves physically. Since coming to
Macon Health Care Center I have felt just like family and enjoy coming
to work each day.

Starting Music Therapy at Macon Health Care Center
How Music Therapy
Can Affect Seniors
A clip from the soon-to-be released
documentary about music and the elderly,
Alive Inside, recently went viral. It shows an
older man with dementia who is seemingly
only able to answer yes or no questions. But
when someone puts headphones over his ears
and plays music from his youth, he suddenly
transforms, becoming happy, animated, and
even eloquent. Shortly after this experience
he tells an interviewer, “It (music) gives me the
feeling of love, or romance. I figure right now
the world needs to come into music, singing.”
Music Therapy Tips for
Loved Ones
If there is an older person in your
life who loves music, but who has fallen out
of practice, encourage him or her to rekindle
that passion. There’s everything to gain and
nothing to lose. Here are some pointers:
1. If you have an elderly relative who used to
play an instrument, try to get him or her playing again. If there’s an instrument up in the
attic, dust it off and restring it. Have it fixed
up if necessary. If the instrument is gone, buy
an affordable replacement.
2. If you and your older loved one sing or
play instruments, by all means do so together, especially if you haven’t before. Music can
create a very special bond.
3. If your loved one was a music lover, but
not a musician, ask about his or her favorite music. Maybe even ask for a list of his
or her favorite artists, albums, and songs.
Then get your loved one an easy to us MP3
player with his or her favorite music already
preloaded.
Dementia Therapy
& Music
One particular day, Concetta Tomaino, DA, a certified music therapist, offered a different kind of dementia therapy
- she sang an old Yiddish song to a man with
dementia and some of her other patients.
“You could tell by his face that he was
watching,” recalls Tomaino. From a man in
his condition, attention was a lot to ask for.
“Whenever I got a chance I played this song
to him and sang to him. Within a month of
doing this, he was making an attempt to
speak, and he eventually started singing the
song himself. He also started talking again.
He continued talking and lived for may years
after that.”
The Brain & Music
to tell you what the song is, they are able to
In numerous clinical studies of older adults
with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, familiar and likable music, not medication, has reduced depression; lessened agitation increased sociability, movement and
cognitive ability; and decreased problem
behaviors.
In a small 1986 study, only music elicited a
physical response from those with final stage
Alzheimer’s as measured in heart rate, breathing, eye blinking, and mouth movement. A
later study that used music in palliative care
found the combination of language, which is
processed by one part of the brain, and music, processed by many parts of the brain, increases the chance of activating neurological
pathways that language alone cannot.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association,
Alzheimer’s now affects more than 5 million
Americans. For those who suffer from it progression, a number that doubles every five
years among seniors according to the National Institute on Aging, music can not only
be a pleasant link to the past, but a nourishing connection to the present.
Just how the brain and body process music remains mysterious.
“Why it’s so positive is that we process music with almost every part of our brain,” she
says. “Music that has personal significance
to someone or is connected with historical
events is a strong stimulus to engage responses in people, even in late stage of dementia. Even if they’re not necessarily able

Macon Health Care Center has started a Dine-In
Activity for our residents. We take lots of trips out to
local restaurants but there are some residents who are
unable to go and this give them opportunity to still enjoy
a meal from their favorite restaurant. This month we
will order from Raspberry’s BBQ. Friends & Family are
welcome to join their loved ones. If you have any
questions please call the Activity Department at
660-385-5797 and ask for Sara Bugg, Activity Director
