HOUSTON (January 6, 2015) – Daikin Industries, Ltd., the world’s
largest manufacturer of
heating, cooling and refrigerant products, announced today that its
board members have approved an expansion plan
Jeff Schlichenmeyer
for its Goodman operaPublisher
tions in the United States.
Over the next several years, Daikin will be building
a new state-of-the art business campus that consolidates the current manufacturing and logistics footprints to a location outside of Houston, TX, in an area
near U.S. 290 and approximately three miles west of
Texas State Highway 99. The new campus is currently
projected to be operational mid-2016. This commitment of approximately $417M represents the largest
single investment since the founding of the Goodman
organization over thirty years ago. The construction is
planned to commence in the coming months.
The new facility, when finished, will include
one of the largest and most technologically advanced
HVAC (Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning)
manufacturing facilities in the country. The consolidated campus will enable Daikin to manufacture in
one location the full range of energy-efficient ducted
residential and light commercial products as well as
various ductless products that are currently imported
from other inter-company business units located outside North America. In fact, the facility will manufacture both ducted and ductless HVAC products which
is a first for Daikin. Ducted heating and cooling systems are considered the standard in the United States.
Ductless systems are installed extensively around the
world. Ductless systems have gained rapid acceptance
in the North American marketplace and have become
one of the fastest growing HVAC market segments.
Texas and Tennessee operations that will be relocated to the new business campus include a research
and development center, logistics, procurement, manufacturing, and marketing. Manufacturing operations
at this new campus will consist of residential and
commercial heating and cooling systems marketed
primarily under the Daikin, Goodman® and Amana®
brand names.
“The new business campus will provide many
outstanding benefits to our customers,” stated Mr.
Takeshi Ebisu, President and CEO. “The operational
efficiencies we achieve will be reflected in the superb
quality of our high-efficiency, energy-saving heating
and cooling systems. We are excited about the outstanding value that this move will bring to our current
and future customers. As the leading global HVAC
manufacturer, Daikin expressed a strong, long-term
commitment to its customers in North America by
constructing this new business campus.”

Miami-Dade Contractors
Alliance File Lawsuit Against
Unlicensed Contractors
Miami-Dade Contractors Alliance, a nonprofit
organization created as an effort to eradicate unlicensed activity in the construction industry has recently filed a class action lawsuit against numerous
unlicensed contractors. The first of many planned by
the organization, the lawsuit is directed at numerous
individuals and companies in the south Florida area
who fail to comply with state and federal contractor
licensing laws.
“Miami-Dade County has the largest population of any county in Florida yet in the past six years,
we’ve had virtually zero unlicensed activity enforcement,” said Rocco DiBenedetto, owner and creator of
Miami-Dade Contractors Alliance. “As a HVAC business owner myself, I have to pay thousands of dollars to maintain a variety of licensing and training and
to have people pose as contractors without
these is blatant criminal behavior.”
Since the start of 2014, Florida has seen a variety
of unlicensed contractor activity cause harm to residents and business state wide. In November alone, 20
people posing as contractors were arrested in a sting
operation titled “Operation Freelancer”. The Sarasota
bust lead to 14 felony charges and 36 misdemeanors
with 13 out of the 20 arrested holding prior criminal
records.
“When rules are not enforced, they become a
burden and a competitive disadvantage to those that
voluntarily comply,” said Rocco. “This lawsuit is a
collaboration of industry members who are standing
up for what is right and we’re asking the legal system
for an injunction against those who force us to unfairly
compete with.” The Miami-Dade Contractors Alliance lawsuit was filed in late November. More than 80
unlicensed contractors are defendants in the case. For

Do You Wish Your
Employees Had a Brain?
Ruth King’s
Contractors Cents
“If they had a brain they would be competing
with me” was the comment made to me in frustration by one of my clients after one of his employees
screwed up on a job...yet again.
Even if you don’t want them to have a brain, your
employees still need to perform specific tasks accurately and productively. They need a roadmap to help
them do it, your road map.
You create the map and oversee their work. Or, if
you don’t want to spend hundreds of hours creating
the road map, you invest in a franchise or join a group
and use their road map. Or, you invest in a road map
created by one of the HVAC industry consultants, including me (www.hvacoperationsmanual.com).
Over the next few weeks, I will write about specific segments of my road map - so you can get a head
start if you want to do your own map rather than invest in one you can customize.
The first question - what does your company look
like? The answer is an organizational chart. Put employees’ names in the functional areas of your company. Email me if you would like a sample organizational chart ([email protected]).
For smaller companies, the same name might be
in different functional areas. For example, you as the
owner/president could also perform the operations
manager and service manager functions. Larger companies have an individual in each of these positions.
Once your organizational chart is complete, it’s
time for job descriptions. That means writing the
function of each position, who that position reports
to, the job duties for that position, and the requirements to fill that position.
If you do employee reviews once per year, you
have a guideline to gauge the review. Is the employee performing all of his or her job duties? Are their
some duties performed better than others?
Many company owners and managers begin the
job description process by asking their employees to
write down what they do. They compare it to what
they should be doing (in their opinion) and make
changes in their job descriptions. Sometimes they
find that the employee is doing the work of two or
more individuals. Sometimes they find that there is
not enough that person is doing to fill 40 hours per
week. In both of these cases, changes need to be
made.
Job descriptions form the basis of your company
operations. Once they are defined and signed off on
by both the employee and his manager, these are the
activities that you manage by.
The last job duty in every employee’s job description is “Other tasks requested by managers” so that
an employee can’t say, “It’s not in my job description,” when a manager asks him to do a task that he
feels he doesn’t want to or should not do.
You’ve given your employees their job descriptions - now what? Give your employees a brain - a
roadmap to do things your way. You hire employees
to perform specific tasks accurately and productively.
They need a roadmap to help them do it, your road
map.
Job descriptions form the basis of your employees’ road maps. And, as an aside, once you have a
job description for a specific job function, it’s easy to
write a “Help Wanted” ad for that position. The job
description is the ad. All you need to do is include
where to send resumes.
Last week a reader asked whether you should
share the job descriptions. It depends. If two people
are sharing one job, or one person is backing up another, then both should see a job description. If you
are doing 360 degree reviews (everyone reviews everyone - managers review employees, employees re-

profitable for more than 25 years.

[email protected].
view managers), then everyone in a specific department should see everyone’s job description. This way
everyone can evaluate everyone fairly.
The only thing I would be careful about is someone saying “That’s not in my job description” and
mean it. If this happens, then a private, immediate
conversation needs to take place.
The last line of every job description should say,
“Any other task requested by management” or a similar phrase. This means if a manager asks an employee
to help with a task or project outside her normal “job
description” then she must do it. If she isn’t willing to
help or do what is asked, then you have an employee
with the wrong attitude. The attitude must change or
that person needs to go through a “career readjustment program” and leave your company.
Employees know what their main job functions
are and how they will be evaluated. They know what
the requirements are for their position. Then, when
review time comes, there should be no surprises. Either the employee is doing her job function or she
isn’t. If she isn’t, a conversation needs to happen
months before review time. A bad review should not
be a surprise.
After an employee signs off on her job description, she is presented with the procedures for that position. With a job description and written procedures
you have that employee’s road map.
It is your responsibility to manage the employee.
A mutually agreed upon job description and procedures form the basis of management. Help with training, answer questions, and give feedback. Catch that
person doing something right and document it. Most
managers only document when an employee is doing
something wrong. Document both the positive and
the negative. Hopefully there are many more positive
documents than negative ones.

Expansion and Consolidation of Daikin / Goodman Operations (from cover)
“Our successful growth has fueled the need for
additional manufacturing capacity. The new campus
will allow us to dramatically increase our production
efficiencies and enable us to continue to serve our customers better than ever before from the leading market
position that we hold today, ” said Sam Bikman, SVP
Global Supply Chain. “The integration of our engineering, procurement, logistics, manufacturing and
marketing functions at the same location will facilitate
and expedite our ability to respond proactively to customer needs.”
This consolidation directly reflects Daikin’s global
commitment to local, in-country, manufacturing. This
philosophy is a driving force throughout the organization and is central to the consistent growth that has led
to Daikin being the leading global manufacturer in the
HVAC industry. “Our employees in the United States
embrace a philosophy of American Pride,” added Ebisu. “This is because employees are the driving force
and a core value that allows us to continue as a leader
in the market. Building the new campus is an exciting
opportunity that will help us create synergies by bringing together our valuable employees and giving them
what we believe will be the best facilities and work environment in the HVAC industry.”
“Our selection of Houston as the location for our
new campus was a result of careful analysis and business considerations. We know that Houston is one of
the best cities in the United States for this type of expansion program. It offers an outstanding combination
that includes the ability to provide an educated workforce, economic growth, and a favorable year-long climate necessary for manufacturing and operational excellence”, continued Ebisu. Houston is well known as
the energy capital of the United States. Soon it will be
recognized as the energy-savings capital with regard
to the production of high-efficiency heating and cooling systems for residential, commercial and industrial
applications.
Employment at the new campus will increase as a
result of expanded product manufacturing and the consolidation of facilities located in Texas and Tennessee.
“Our goal is to treat our current employees fairly and
equitably when the transfer of manufacturing operations begins,” said Kari Durham, senior vice president
human resources. “Total employment in the Houston
area will increase to approximately 4000 employees.”
Goodman Sales and Distribution operations, Quietflex Manufacturing Company, L.P. (a leading manufacturer of flexible duct and fiberglass products), Daikin Marine Container, and other Daikin operations are
not impacted by the consolidation.

ACCA/FL FACTS:
By Ken Bodwell
It was the
second weekend in
January and I was
over the holidays
and bowl games and
needed something
to get me focused
on the New Year.
What better way
than watching the next generation work and play
than a scouting event? It just so happened that Daytona International Speedway was hosting a scouting
weekend while drivers and cars were preparing for
the upcoming race. While camping in the infield,
the scouts had an opportunity to get up close and
personal with the drivers while experiencing the
adrenalin rush of cars traveling at night on a circular
track at speeds well in excessive of a hundred miles
an hour. It’s easy to get caught up in the rush! … But
my purpose was to find ways to motivate readers to
grasp a new sense of purpose; a sense of teamwork;
a sense of challenge and a taste of success. Wow,
I got all that from watching the scouts interact including getting a taste of some great chili and chow
made over an open fire.
The goal of team sports is about winning and
beating the other team. In scouts, the first objective is about making the scout a better more selfconfident individual. Each of the merit badges are
earned as individuals but together, they develop a
sense of citizenry. They are part of a team or troop
and develop team spirit. Just like everybody else,
they need to share success and team comradery.
Think about where we are as adults in the HVAC
industry. Technology has changed how we view our
jobs. There was a time when a young person entered
the industry, they learned the basics of refrigeration
and then they developed the skills of the trade by
installing equipment and developing an overall understanding of the system. As skills became honed,
these apprentices found areas of expertise that they
were comfortable with. Some staying as installers and others as service mechanics. Sadly, today,
working as a tradesman is not consider an attractive profession. As a matter of fact, we no longer
have service mechanics, we have technicians or
techs! School administrators and a liberal attitude
in government suggest that success only comes with
college degrees. Yet I watch these scouts enjoying
the challenges of building climbing walls and fires;
it didn’t take a college education… it took common
sense! As they examined the powerful engines in
these race cars and spoke to the drivers, I saw them
dream about being behind the wheel of these machines. The drivers spoke about practice and driving
courtesy and common sense when competing. Sure,
winning was their goal, but winning safely was their
number one priority. They talked about their team
and how each member played a part in their success.
Yes, they had engineers on the team but the majority
of the guys enjoyed working with both their hands
and their knowledge to fine tune the equipment.
So why then are we finding it so difficult to attract young people into our industry? “Where are
all the apprentices?” For years it was not uncommon
to hear somebody in our industry indicate they did
not want their children to follow in their footsteps.
Yet both my sons followed my trek and have both
found successful careers. Each of them followed a
different path but the industry is huge. As a father,
I couldn’t be prouder of them! As some have suggested I am an icon in our industry; if so I couldn’t
be prouder of where we are and the direction we are
headed. Let’s face it, technology has changed the in-

dustry many of us grew up with. How often do you
see a pneumatic control system? Refrigerants are
changing! Energy and indoor air quality opportunities are involving! The tool pouches we carried as
young apprentices only slightly resemble the tools
needed today. Technology Rules!
Remember the ad, “this is not your father’s
Oldsmobile” … well guess what, this is not the same
industry you cut your teeth in. It’s much better and
it’s time you starting exposing your children to an
insider’s view. My son’s started by sweeping the
shop, cutting filters and catching us up with the filing. None of it was very glamourous but it was a
foundation and an opportunity to view the industry
from the ground up. They met my peers and had a
first-hand glimpse of what we do. It was their choice
if the HVAC/R industry offered them the challenges
and future they wanted. With the regulations today,
you may not have the opportunity to provide the
same hands-on exposure but there are opportunities
to show off what we are about. How about bringing your son or daughter to an industry expo? Every
school has bring your child to work days. Plan ahead
and make arrangements to show off the equipment
you fix or install every day. It’s time our industry
started bragging about our current and forward
looking technology. Both on the service and installation side of the industry, you as a tradesmen are
professional and are challenged by new technology
every day. Equipment design, efficiency and serviceability are improving. Today, the person fixing
your indoor environment system might be a guy or a
gal and they are as apt to be carrying a tablet as the
traditional gauges and meters we carried!
Be proud of our industry and let’s work together
to bring the next generation of young people into an
exciting future. That’s my New Year’s resolution!

How to Measure the Pressure Drop
of a Return Air Filter Grille
An installation that often presents a challenge
to those measuring static pressure is where the air
filter is located in a filter grille. This type of filter installation can be found in a variety of locations ranging from attic installations to closet installations. Some of these installations can have a
significant amount of duct between the filter grille
and the air handing equipment. Other installations
have almost no return ducting such as an installation where the air handling equipment is mounted
on a platform.
With all of these variations, how do you measure the pressure drop of the filter located in the
filter grille without going to a lot of trouble? The
solution might be much easier than you suspect it to
be. Before we get to the solution, let’s look at some
common methods that are used to obtain this measurement that might not be the best.
Opening the Filter Grille Access Panel
A method that many have attempted to use is to
open the access panel of the filter grille and slip a
hose or probe past the filter to obtain the pressure
reading after the filter. This method can be very
awkward and has the potential to underestimate the
true pressure drop of the air filter.
Once the hose or probe is placed past the air filter it can create a significant gap between the filter
grille and the filter itself. This gap will allow air to
bypass the filter and reduce the amount of pressure
drop the filter would actually see during operation.
Removing the Filter from the Filter Grille
Another method that many have tried using to
obtain the filter pressure drop in a filter grille is to
remove the filter from the grille altogether. With
this method, the technician first measures total
external static pressure with the filter in the filter
grille. Next, they take a second total external static
pressure measurement without the filter in the filter
grille. These two readings are then subtracted from
one another to determine the pressure drop of the
filter. Sounds good right?
If the system that this test is being performed
on uses a PSC fan to move air throughout the duct
system, you may once again end up with an inaccurate filter pressure drop. When the filter is removed
from the filter grille, the total external static pressure of the system will decrease. This decrease in
static pressure will result in an increase in fan airflow.
As the filter is placed back in the filter grille,
there has now been the added resistance of the filter
for the fan to overcome. Total external static pressure will increase, and fan airflow will decrease.
The readings are not being taken under like conditions in this test and the amount of airflow the fan is
moving is different.
The Easiest Way to Measure is Directly
It’s best to test a system as it is found and to
alter as little as possible. This enables you to get
a true feel for how the system really is operating
at that point in time. To keep from altering system
conditions, simply place your static pressure probe
directly through the air filter and filter grille at the
same time.
Depending on the filter media type being utilized, you may need to poke a small hole in the
filter with a scratch awl or other sharp instrument.
Once this is completed, you will be reading the direct pressure drop of the air filter on the display of
your manometer as the room pressure on the other
side of the manometer would essentially be “0”. By
accounting for the real pressure drop of the filter
in this type of installation, it can prevent you from
chasing a problem that doesn’t exist, or finding one
that may have been minimized.

Ask The Experts
HVAC Questions? Ask an HVAC Expert for Answers
email your questions to [email protected]
We hear a lot about Blower Door Tests. What
is the difference between a Blower Door Test and a
Duct Test? Does the new Code require Duct Tests?
This question has been asked more frequently
in light of the new Florida Building Code requirement that will go in effect July 1, 2015. There is
a lot of confusion out there as to the requirement,
especially with the terminology used and the unfamiliarity that most AC Contractors have with the
Building Science and Energy Audit concepts.
You can probably remember the Florida AC Replacement Rebate Program that we went through a
few years ago. Part of that Program was a requirement for a Duct Leakage Test in order to get the
rebate as well as a Manual J Calculation. That created a boom in Manual J classes and gave Energy
Raters a boost to their income as they went around
doing Duct Tests for AC Contractors. Many AC
Contractors, I am sad to say, didn’t know how to do
a Manual J and probably found out that they didn’t
know how to properly seal ductwork. Hopefully the
education and the experience made for better overall installations and improved the collective knowledge base of AC Contractors.
But to answer the question being posed and to
clarify any confusion, here is the answer.
First, the new Code will NOT require a DUCT
Test on new buildings or replacements. There are
two situations where you will be required to do a
Duct Test. The first one is whenever the “Leak Free”
Credit for ducts is taken in the Energy Calculations
(Performance Method) submitted for permit. If the
Default duct leakage is used, no Duct Test is needed. The second situation is whenever the Prescriptive Method is used for Energy compliance. That is
usually the method used in small Additions, where
the existing building is not altered and the new ductwork is in the new added section. When that happens, then your ductwork must either be inside the
PAGE B3

President of FRACCA and member of
the Florida Building Commission
conditioned space or Tested to be “Leak Free”. (By
the way, if using this Prescriptive Method and you
want to place your ducts in the attic, be ready to use
R-8 ducts as well as do a Duct Test.)
So, what is the Blower Door Test that everyone
has been talking about regarding the new Code?
The new Code does require Builders (not AC Contractors) to do a Blower Door Test on each new residential building they permit and build. The Maximum Leakage for the building is set at 5 ACH50.
The Blower Duct Test is one of the common
names we give to a Building Air Tightness Test or
an “Infiltration Test”. It has a specific protocol or
method to be followed and it measures the building’s air leakage through the thermal envelope. The
Thermal Envelope is the boundary between conditioned and unconditioned space and is where insulation is required. So in a typical house it would
be the Floor, Ceiling, Exterior Walls and Walls
between the conditioned space and Garages. The
amount of air that leaks into the house is measured
at a standardized pressure of 50 Pascals (0.2 in), so
the result of the actual test is called CFM50. Using
the house’s conditioned floor area and the ceiling
heights, the house’s interior Volume is calculated
and then we can figure out how many times that
volume of air is being replaced with the infiltration
air we measured with the Blower Door. That measurement is called the ACH50.
A house with more than 5 ACH50 will not pass
the Energy Code. That means that every single residential building will be a “Tight Building” and will
save energy (in theory). How does that impact AC
Contractors?
There are two ways where this will come into
play. First it will require that all residential buildings have Outside Air supply through Mechanical
means since the Mechanical Code wants Indoor Air
Quality not to suffer when the ACH50 is less than
5. The second way this Blower Door Test might impact AC Contractors is where Builders might dump
the Testing into our Scope, even though it is not
in the Mechanical Code and AC Contractors don’t
have anything to do with sealing Walls or Ceilings.
But remember that the Blower Door Test measures
all leakage into the conditioned space and part of
that leakage occurs through ductwork in the attic.
Leaky ducts adds to the overall infiltration and if
a building does not pass the ACH50, which is done
at Final, the Builder will be scrambling to seal penetrations which are going to be already covered up,
and so reducing duct leakage might be involved.
You might want to offer the Blower Door Testing
as part of your services, but be sure you know what
you are doing.
In any case, I would recommend that all AC
Contractors become educated on Blower Door
Tests, Duct Tests and the equipment involved. One
easy way is to attend the FRACCA Education Conference in Orlando where there will be an emphasis
this year on Airflow and Building Leakage Testing
including the AiRodeo Lab where all of the Blower
door, Duct Blaster, Air Hoods, Test & Balance, etc.
will be available for hands-on training. Many CEU
classes are geared to the topics that are relevant to
the AC Industry. Please send me your additional
questions on this topic or any other HVAC questions that you have.

HARDI Distributors
Report 9.4 Percent
Revenue Increase in
November
COLUMBUS, Ohio, January 22, 2015– Heating, Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Distributors International (HARDI) released their monthly
TRENDS report, showing average sales for HARDI
distributor members increased 9.4 percent in November 2014.
The annualized growth through November is
now 6.9 percent and at the upper edge of the 6-percent to 7-percent range where it has been throughout
2014.
HARDI Senior Economist Danielle Marceau
said, “The continuously improving health of the US
consumer is supporting
growth in the retail industry, as well as residential construction.”
“November was the
third strong month in a
row for average sales,”
said HARDI Market
Research and Benchmarking analyst Brian
Loftus, adding, “November 2013 showed
low single-digit growth
but November 2014 had
one less billing day than
last year. The high single-digit performance
this year was widely
dispersed.”
Marceau
offered
another factor contributing to the recent performance. “Oil prices
are contributing to low
gasoline and heating
fuel costs as we head
into the winter season.
That is great for the
US consumer who will
spend less on these necessities and have more
money in their pocket
for home improvements,” she said.
The Days Sales Outstanding (DSO), a measure of how quickly customers pay their bills, is
now at 46.1 days, the
shortest collection time
we have seen for this
time of year. The typical
seasonal increase has
been slow to develop.
Given the strong topline report, we believe
the DSO reflects healthier customers paying
their bills more quickly
instead of stricter credit
standards.
HARDI members
do not receive financial
compensation in exchange for their monthly sales data and can
discontinue their participation without prior
notice or penalty. Participation is voluntary,
and the depth of market
coverage varies from region to region. An independent entity collects
and compiles the data
that can include products not directly associated with the HVACR
industry.

World’s Largest HVACR Event
McCormick Place - Chicago
January 26-28, 2015
The 2015 AHR Expo claimed the title for the
best-attended event ever held in Chicago. Preliminary
figures for the world’s largest HVACR marketplace
show that more than 61,000 total attendees, including
42,400 visitors, participated in the 2015 AHR Expo,
January 26 - 28, at McCormick Place.
According to Clay Stevens, President of International Exposition Company, five Chicago records were
shattered by the successful 2015 event. Chicago is the
site of some of our largest Shows and we are thrilled
that we set so many new records this year,” Stevens
said. “These impressive results also show how vital
AHR Expo is to the industry. We’ve had tremendous
support from the 41 sponsors and endorsing associations that participate, as well as from our exhibitors
who rely on the Show to introduce new products and
meet customers and prospects from around the world.”
AHR Expo is endorsed by 39 leading HVACR industry associations and is co-sponsored by ASHRAE
and AHRI.
In recognition of AHR Expo’s importance to the
greater Chicago area, Mayor Rahm Emanuel declared
January 26-28 “Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigerating Week in Chicago”. The proclamation cites
AHR Expo’s contribution to educating the industry,
“improving our greater society” and making donations
to local charitable organizations.
The 2016 AHR Expo will take place January 25 27 in Orlando, Florida. For more information visit the
Show’s website at www.ahrexpo.com.

RectorSeal’s Mighty Bracket™ is
HVAC Industry’s First Labor-Cutting
Mini-Split Installation Support Tool
RectorSeal® Corp., Houston, a leading manufacturer of quality HVAC/R products, introduces the
Mighty Bracket™, the HVAC industry’s first minisplit installation support tool. Mighty Bracket cuts
jobsite labor costs by 50-percent because it reduces
evaporator coil mounting and connecting to a handsfree, single-person task.
The contractor-grade yellow, patent-pending
Mighty Bracket hooks onto both tabs of a mini-split
wall mounting plate in less than a minute. The Mighty
Bracket securely holds the mini-split evaporator coil
for quick and easy connections of electrical, refrigeration line sets and condensate drain pumps/hoses.
The 20-inch long support arms are roomy enough to
allow evaporator coils to be temporarily angled away
from the wall at 23 to 45-degrees for easy back panel
access during installation or servicing.
Afterward, the heavy duty, ABS plastic, reusable
bracket needs no disassembly, but simply folds up for
storage in a compact 28 x 6-inch black canvas tote
bag.
The Mighty Bracket accommodates most minisplit brands and evaporator weights up to 100-pounds.
Other features include:
· Soft gasket material on support feet and support arms protect wall surfaces and evaporator coil
encasement finishes from scratches;
· Flip-up gates at the end of both support arms
helps to prevent slip off and damage to the evapora-
tor or flooring below;
· Horizontal leveling of support arms is accomplished by sliding an included cotter pin into four adjustment hole selections;
· Pays for itself in labor savings after just one
installation;
· Four-color, fully-illustrated glossy packaging
box can easily be displayed on wholesaler end caps,
shelves or counters;
· Rounded corners prevent worker injury from
sharp edges.
The Mighty Bracket is a perfect complement
to RectorSeal’s full line of ductless mini-split installation accessories such as NoKink™--kink-free
lineset connection; RectorSeal condenser brackets
and mounts; GasGuard™ and Novent®--locking
caps for condenser refrigerant access valves; SlimDuct® and Fortress™--lineset protection duct; ACTABS™ DMSS--drain pan mold prevention tablets;
PairCoil™--pre-insulated linesets; Safe-T-Switch®
and AquaGuard® condensate shut-off switches; Aspen® Pumps--condensate pumps; and a variety of
other accessories for condensate management and
equipment mounting.

Unico to Enter New HVAC
Markets, Offer More New
Products in 2015
St. Louis, Missouri (Jan. 12, 2015)— On the
heels of a successful 2014 that featured six new
product launches and a partnership with an overseas manufacturer, Unico, Inc. is set to make 2015
an even bigger year for innovation and expansion.
With 13 products in the wings, another international partnership, plans to enter new markets,
and a goal to train 5,000 distributors and installers, Unico is poised for its biggest year yet in the
company’s 30-year history as a manufacturer of small-duct heating and air conditioning systems.
“Innovation is in the air here at Unico,” said Scott Intagliata, marketing director at Unico. “It seems everyone from engineering to sales to customer service
have new ideas that merit discussion. We are all focused on developing solutions
to bring our customers better air quality, better efficiency, easier installation and
lower energy costs, and the good news is that every one of our new products will
achieve one or more of these goals.”
Unico’s 13 new products will be launched at various times in 2015. Each is
undergoing rigorous testing and quality control steps to ensure their performance
and safety. The products that will be introduced first are: The UniZoneTM line
of in-duct motorized dampers for precise temperature control and the eMixTM
indoor unit for high-efficiency domestic hot water production, and also the UniLightTM, a combination LED light and round Unico outlet.
“All of our new products will fully integrate with our existing equipment,”
Intagliata said. “That means installers trained on the Unico System will be able
to easily offer the products as valuable add-ons that further enhance efficiency or
provide more design options.”
Of great significance, Unico will begin manufacturing Diffusion brand fan
coils as a franchisee of British manufacturer Energy Technique plc. Diffusion has
supplied fan coils and commercial heating products to the UK heating and ventilation industry for more than 50 years. “The products extend our air handling offering further in to the commercial space, “ said Intagliata. “For years, our products
have been used in commercial applications, and with the sale of Diffusion products, we anticipate setting up a new distribution channel that focuses on this area.”
The company has also decided to focus on the log and timber home market in
2015. “With the economic recovery, we’re seeing a renewed interest in these types
of homes,” Intagliata said. “Unico has enjoyed good success in this market for more
than a decade; homeowners love the fact that our flexible ducting can be hidden
inside the log walls, which eliminates the need for soffits. We’re looking forward
to introducing our iSeries line of mini-splits and outdoor inverter units to log home
manufacturers and builders. The iSeries gives them even more flexibility in design
and construction.”
Unico plans to pursue more Zero Energy and LEED home opportunities, as
well as introduce their products to cool computer rooms. This year will also see
Unico’s first planned entry into the commercial market, with a focus on historic
buildings.
“While the Unico System can be found in a number of commercial structures,
we are now increasing our attention on marketing the Unico System to preservationists and renovators of historic properties,” Intagliata said. “Our success in older
homes has been our mainstay for 30 years, and that won’t change, but we want to
get more involved in the commercial market.”
