DESIGN KNOWLEDGE THROUGH PLACES:
PARK, UNIVERSITY AND RESEARCH ARCHITECTURES IN THE EXPO AREA 2015 MILAN 2016
The Lasue workshop, in its third edition, involves students from different parts of the
world experiencing the interpretation and foreshadowing of preliminary architectural
and landscape design.
The 2016 edition focuses on the Expo area, welcoming the first signs of conversion of it
by assigning it a fundamental value for the city of Milan, capable of giving continuity to
the strong investment for infrastructure of the area, for the purpose of an additive value
and permanent network of knowledge that puts Milan among the top European cities for
its Universities, for the research development and the initiation of new business opportunities. Currently the paper prepared by the City and the Region considers moving to
the Expo Area the Università Statale and it’s role as generator of research and relationship with the company. A strong presence of green areas allows the identification of the
design of a technology park that can arise in a relationship of broker and rebalancing
of settlements around it. The surrounding area is characterized by the widespread
continuity of peri-urban settlements that merges with the edges of the centers of Rho
and Pero and the dilated edges of the city of Milan in an incorporation that has come
gradually to replace the previous agricultural cultures, industrial implants and the
presence of the former Agip refinery on the site of the new Fiera di Milano. Currently
remain only weak signs of the previous system of farms and agricultural areas
maintained, in the area and its surroundings.
The decisions, on a metropolitan scale of the city, in the last twenty years, have led to
the development of new infrastructure for the connection and accessibility of the new
trade fair and for the Milano Expo.
The workshop provides the design and the definition, through ‘diagrams and figures’, of
a possible new conformation of the area, in a modification in which the Park becomes
the element of interconnection between the settlement of public and private parts strongly, divided by the new infrastructural pattern.
The proposals aim to highlight possible ideas of redesign and redevelopment of the
area, capable of crossing the actual perimeter of the Expo area, generating extended
effects in the redefinition of public green spaces and the ‘positions and relationship’
from which can be designed the new University.
The choice to dislocate the Univerità Statale in the Expo area, may give form to an
integrated system designed to promote a regeneration of the parties that are now
divided and fragmented. The workshop design experience will take place through days
of laboratory and design review, and some conferences and meetings with Architects,
Design and Urban Planning professors.
The program foresees the beginning of the workshop on february 22, with the
introduction to the theme of the project. The term is scheduled for March 5, with
two seminars to present and discuss the students’ work, and a final presentation
