HOSPITELL October 23, 2015 3 PFAC provides patient perspective Dear Colleagues, For the first time ever, Windham and Backus hospitals’ Patient Family Advisory Councils got together Wednesday evening. This celebratory meeting on the Windham campus underscores the importance of community ambassadors and their support of Windham and Backus hospitals. At a time when healthcare is changing rapidly and we face many challenges, they offer us unbridled support and word-of-mouth goodwill that we could never achieve with a billboard or radio commercial. They are also great resources for us as we work to improve the patient experience at Backus, Windham and throughout Hartford Healthcare. No matter what is occurring externally, patients and families must be our focus. So if we are adding a new program, or changing an existing one, members of these councils can give us the patient perspective that is vital to success. The two advisory councils, which traditionally meet separately on their respective campuses, are made up of community members with varied backgrounds and experiences, but they have at least one thing in common — a passion for their local hospitals. Most of them have experienced hospitalization themselves or within their families —they can give us honest feedback on what we do well, what we don’t do so well and potential solutions to issues that we sometimes might not even realize. On behalf of many grateful colleagues at Windham and Backus, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our patient advisory council members for volunteering their time and commitment to making our hospitals better places — and for all they can do in the future to help us meet our goals to improve patient experience, no matter where patients enter our system of care. I also want to recognize our staff Dave’s Desk Chilling out Thank you and congratulations to the Windham Hospital Healers Relay for Life Team for raising $2,060 for the American Cancer Society during the Windham area event on Oct. 17-18 at Eastern Connecticut State University. In all, 47 teams and 423 participants raised more than $92,000. From left, team members Bobbie Maschka, Kate Starkey, Katie Maschka and Bob Dempsey brave the frigid temperatures. who support the advisory councils — Mary Horan, Greg Post, Adrianne DeVivo and Ginny James, as well as our management team members who sit on the council. The more we seek feedback from the councils, and involve them in meaningful patient experience projects, the better we will become in our efforts to serve the community. As healthcare workers, I am certain that we always have the best interests of our patients in mind. But like anything else in life, when you do the same thing day after day, and become close to a situation, you can develop blind spots. Our advisory councils help us see things in new and different ways. I have personally seen the impact they can have on a project, and how their honest feedback can help us avoid mistakes no matter how well intentioned we are. I encourage everyone to take advantage of their expertise — and passion. That’s all for now, Dave Windham Gala set for Nov. 14 The Auxiliary to Windham Hospital will host its 20th annual Autumn Gala, “Hats Off to You,” on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Hartford Marriott Downtown at Adriaen’s Landing. The Auxiliary will recognize the physician, caregiver and philanthropist of the year at the event. For an invitation, call Shawn Maynard at 860-456-6861 or e-mail [email protected]. 4 HOSPITELL 50th reunion Four members from the Backus School of Nursing Class of 1965 pose for a photo Wednesday at the Polish American Citizens Club in Montville where the Alumnae Association of the Backus School of Nursing held its annual meeting. That class was celebrating its 50th anniversary and reunion. From left are Dorothy Anderson, Marjorie (Pryor) Henderson, Sandra (Hindinger) Whittingstall, and Tedi (Niesczezewski) Cote. October 23, 2015 Nursing school alum turns 100 Things have changed quite a bit for nurses over the past 80 years, according to 1936 Backus School of Nursing graduate Alice Blanchard. “In those days, [Being a student] I remember getting up at 6 a.m., going to the main room, singing hymns and saying The Lord’s Prayer,” she says. “It’s very different today.” Blanchard, who turned 100 on Oct. 22, worked for nearly 40 years as a nurse at Backus and Uncas on The Thames. Working in maternity was her favorite assignment, she says. Her birthday was celebrated the same week as the Alumnae annual Blanchard meeting, which included highlights of the year, an update on Backus and a Q&A with Director of Communications Shawn Mawhiney and remarks from Becky Durham, Regional Director of Critical Care Services. NFA senior named as winner of Backus MLK scholarship Shandara Smith, a senior at Norwich Free Academy, is a 2015 recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship. Smith received the honor during the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Trust Funds 32nd annual Scholarship Dinner on Oct. 15 at the Mystic Marriott in Groton. Smith is one of five local students to receive a $20,000 scholarship, each funded by a different local organization. Smith’s scholarship is funded by Backus Hospital. The scholarship was presented by Backus Hospital President Dave Whitehead. A member of the National Honor Society, Smith is enrolled in AP courses, is a high honors student, and has won the Social Studies Prize, and the Lillian S. Young Spelling Bee. In addition, she is a member of the varsity cheerleading and track and field teams, is a participant in Club Etiquette, Nexus for Black Achievement, and the Business Club. Smith has been recommended for the Price Waterhouse Coopers Accounting Careers Leadership Institute at Bryant University. In the community, Smith has volunteered in Project Outreach, in the Norwich Football League, in Read Across America and Bully Busters. She’s considering attending Bryant or Virginia State University, where she plans to study business. Shandara Smith, left, a senior at Norwich Free Academy, was one of six local students honored during the 34th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Dinner last Thursday night at the Mystic Marriott. Smith, whose $20,000 scholarship was sponsored by Backus Hospital, made a promise during her speech to return to her community some day to fund another scholarship for dreamers like herself. October 23, 2015 HOSPITELL 5 Backus takes advantage of da Vinci technology Backus Hospital has had the latest da Vinci surgical robot for less than a year, but the hospital and its surgical team are already being recognized as industry leaders when it comes to utilizing the new technology for minimally invasive procedures. Intuitive Surgical, the company that developed the da Vinci robot, says that since moving from the “s” to the “xi” model, Backus is the “best example of a re-launch” of the 76 hospitals that upgraded to the new, more precise technology. Since the upgrade in April 2015, the hospital has increased volume, decreased consult time and reduced the cost of care for patients who have procedures using the da Vinci robot. Backus is the only hospital in Eastern Connecticut to utilize the new model. Surgeons at Backus currently use the da Vinci xi for urological, gynecological, colorectal and weight loss procedures. “Being recognized as a benchmark for utilizing this new da Vinci model shows the hospital’s commitment to investing in state of the art technology to improve patient outcomes and that we have staff that are engaged in learning and utilizing this new technology,” says Gail Delaney, East Region Director of Surgical Services. “Backus Robotics Coordinator Richie Almeida, RN, should be commended for demonstrating great leadership in helping to build this type of staff engagement.” The da Vinci Surgical System utilizes advanced, robotic, computer and optical technologies to assist surgeons with a variety procedures. The system has a 3D high definition (3D-HD) vision system, special instruments and computer software which allow surgeons to operate COVER STORY with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control. The 3D-HD image is highly magnified; giving surgeons a close-up view of the area he or she is operating on. Instruments have mechanical wrists that bend and rotate to mimic the movements of the human wrist — allowing the surgeon to make small, precise movements inside the patient. Compared to open surgery, studies have shown that patients undergoing da Vinci procedures have shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times, less need for narcotic pain medications and smaller incisions associated with minimal scarring. Intuitive Surgical representative Brendon Farrell said in an email to the Backus team that he has fielded many calls for tips on how to replicate Backus’ success. “I tell them the same thing: [It’s] Hospital administrators who believe in robotics and provide excellent direction and support; excellent surgeons (the robot is just a tool); and dedicated staff members who are exceptional at their jobs,” Farrell writes.
