Pastoral Visitations: Please notify the Parish Office if you or any of your loved ones are ill, homebound, in SOMC, nursing homes or rehabilitation centers. This Wednesday is Earth Day. In 1970, long before global warming was a household word, Earth Day was established in the US to raise awareness of our connectedness to our Mother Earth. Forty-five years later we have grown in our understanding of how related we are to Earth and yet we are still arguing about what can be done to protect and honor the physical world in which we live. Climate change is a fact of life, even if we disagree on its causes! Parish Collections Second Collection Today: Church Buildings & Grounds Maintenance Living at the shore requires consistent maintenance & repairs to the 4 churches that make up St. Francis Parish. This collection helps us fund the upkeep of our facilities & the significant costs in maintaining our grounds. Please help us serve you by being generous. Last Week’s 2nd Collection Friars and Sisters Vehicle Maintenance & Fuel Collected: $5,586 This Week We Need: Budgeted: $17,000 Last Week’s Collection What I think is the most important factor for us as Catholic Christians is the relationship that we have with all of creation. We not only need to work to sustain a livable planet for the rest of our lives and those of our children, but we need to understand creation as sacred and a gift from a loving and giving God. We are connected to everything in the physical universe! Sister Ilia Delio tells us that “In the beginning is relationship and out of energized relationships new life emerges.” We are called to broaden our vision and to open our hearts to the wonders that God has wrought. If we watch what is happening in the natural world, we cannot help but see patterns of life and death, of transformation and transcendence, of union and creative change. We cannot deny our relationship with everything. We cannot ignore the effect that we have on the universe by so many of our actions, well-meaning though they may be. The wars we wage are environmental disasters. Our use of natural resources affects so much more than our ability to have available and reasonable sources of fuel and water. We need to open our eyes, especially to see the effects of climate change on people throughout the world! Please continue to recycle, to save water, to pay attention to the use of gasoline and heating fuels, to reuse whatever possible, to purchase goods without excessive packaging, to buy local. But also, contemplate the relationships we have with everything that God has created and called good, and seek new ways to strengthen those relationships. Let this season of new life – the season of Resurrection, the season of Spring – awaken a deeper respect for the world around us. Let us not allow omens of destruction and death to accompany the advance of this world! But to be “protectors”, we also have to keep watch over ourselves! Let us not forget that hatred, envy and pride defile our lives! To protect creation, to protect every man and every woman, to look upon them with tenderness and love, is to open up a horizon of hope; it is to let a shaft of light break through the heavy clouds; it is to bring the warmth of hope! (Pope Francis) The Men’s Spirituality group meets on the third Saturday of each month from 8:30 to 10:00 AM in Room 212.
