Sightseeing
A fascinating guided group walk, a romantic tour by boat or
horse tram, a relaxing ride by bike or Vespa or an exciting
balloon trip.
Whatever you are looking for, we will be delighted to help you
put together the perfect programme.
Guided city walks
A guided tour of Bruges is an
excellent way to discover all
aspects of the city. You can choose
the traditional route, or let
yourself be guided through
unknown places while learning
some juicy anecdotes. Toerisme
Brugge only works with officially
recognised guides who can guide
visitors in different languages.
World Heritage walk
Bruges’ city centre was declared a
world heritage site by UNESCO in 2000.
A guided tour through the unique
historical heart is a must for every
first-time visitor! From the Markt and
the Belfry to the Burg square, the
Beguinage and the Minnewater.
Quiet Bruges
You set off to discover hidden treasures
in a picturesque area of the city: along
St. Anne’s Church, Jerusalem Chapel
and the Lace Centre, the Bruggemuseum-
Folklore, the Bruggemuseum-Gezelle,
the archers’ guilds and the windmills
along the ramparts of the city.
Hanseatic Bruges
From the 13th to the 15th century,
Bruges was the commercial link
between the Hanseatic cities of
Scandinavia, England and Germany (at
that time called Easterlings) and other
important commercial centres in
France, Spain and Italy. This walk takes
you along the stone souvenirs of
Bruges’ Golden Age.
Fiction and Fantasy
The many stirring folk tales and
legends that tell the history of Bruges
will fire your imagination during this
mysterious walk, and will make you
smile and surprise you with their
popular wisdom. It is up to you to
decide what you believe!
You can draw up your own day programme
with these building blocks. Toerisme
Brugge will be happy to book these
activities for you.

Bladelin Court
20
At around 1440, Pieter Bladelin,
treasurer of the Order of the Golden
Fleece, commissioned the construction
of Bladelin Court. In the 15th century
the powerful Florentine banking family
of De Medici set up a branch here. The
stone medallion portraits of Lorenzo de
Medici and his wife still grace the
picturesque inner court.

Chapel of
our Lady of the Blind
23
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Blind is
supposed to have been erected in
timber in 1305 through the agency of
Robert of Bethune, Count of Flanders.
The count had the chapel built after the
Battle of Mons-en-Pévèle (1304) in
gratitude for the Virgin Mary. The
present chapel dates from 1651. The
miraculous oaken image of Our Lady of
the Blind is a Madonna and Child from
1415. Each year, on August 15, the
procession of Our Lady of the Blind
winds its way through the streets of
Bruges. In order to abide by the Solemn
Oath, sworn during the battle of
Mons-en-Pévèle, the citizens of Bruges
have been devoting a so-called solemn
oath-candle in the church of Our Lady
of the Pottery since 1304.

Procession of the
Holy Blood
Pageant of the
Golden Tree
17 May 2012
19 and 26 August 2012
For centuries, this popular municipal
procession has depicted arresting
and moving scenes from the Old and
New Testament. The procession’s
roots go back to 1291!
The Procession of the Holy Blood has
been on UNESCO’s Intangible World
Heritage list since 2009, so you just
have to see it!
The Pageant of the Golden Tree,
organised every 5 years, was first
introduced in 1958. The “Tournament of
the Golden Tree” was a joust held on
the Market Square in 1468 on the
occasion of the marriage between
Charles the Bold and Margaret of York.
Apart from the century-old legend of
the Golden Tree, the history of Flanders
and the Joyous Entry of the bride and
groom are also displayed.
The Pageant of the Golden Tree is an
enchanting show featuring giants,
floats and 2,000 colourfully dressed
extras.
