Men have had to light and die for
their country since its earliest history

Job S a r g e n t ' s farm was a q u a r t e r section in the
north part of the village extending f r o m US-31 to the
s t a t e road now known as Sikkenga Road.
But Job Sargent's g r a v e is not the only v e t e r a n ' s
g r a v e of special interest in Oak Grove C e m e t e r y . Many s o l d i e r s of later wars have been laid to r e s t t h e r e .
Close by the entrance a large, i m p r e s s i v e stone b e a r s
a m e m o r i a l tribute to John H e r r e n who died at the age
of 37, on Aug. 28, 1864, Co. F. 5th Michigan Cavalry,
a t Andersonville Prison. His wife, Magdalena H e r r e n
was buried beside him in 1901.
John H e r r e n left his f a r m in r u r a l Montague
to go to war in 1862, leaving a wife and four small
children. A daughter who later became Mary Herren
Rager, was then four y e a r s old and r e m e m b e r e d the
the last t i m e she saw h e r f a t h e r . He was walking
away and turned to wave to h e r . Her mother was c r y ing.
In those days, when a man left his f a r m to go
into s e r v i c e , his wife and children (if they were old
enough) c a r r i e d on with the duties around the place
and they got along a s best they could. M a r y H e r r e n
Rager told of picking b l a c k b e r r i e s and c a r r y i n g them
about four n r l e s into town where she sold them for
20C a c a s e . T i m e s were rough and she r e m ambers
many mornings when they got up to find Indians s l e e p ing on the floor of the kitchen.
A neighbor, John Dill, who lived only two miles
away, was with John H e r r e n in Andersonville Prison
but survived the cruelties and r e t u r n e d home with
many a tale of the t e r r i b l e conditions in the prison.
A c r e e k which ran through the p r e m i s e s was
used for drinking water but was none too clean as it
flowed through another c a m p before reaching Andersonville. T h e night before John H e r r e n died, John Dill
had to partly c a r r y him back f r o m j h e c r e e k because

Memorial Day is a day set a p a r t in must s t a t e s
to honor the dead of any American w a r .
As we walk through the c e m e t e r y on this day
and see the flower decorated g r a v e s and those designated by an American Flag we a r e reminded of the
fact that man have had to fight and die for their count r y since its e a r l i e s t history, and f r o m the incriptions on the headstones, g l i m p s e s of t h e i r private lives
a r e often disclosed.
T h e oldest veteran to be buried in the White
Lake a r e a is J o b Sargent whose g r a v e is in Osk Grove
C e m e t e r y in Montague. He died in 1882 at the age of
89 y e a r s .
Quoting f r o m the Montague Area Centennial Book,
in the chapter on ''Settlement B e g i n s " , Job Sargent
s e r v e d ivith the U. S. F o r c e s against England, in the
War of 1812. So far a s can be a s c e r t a i n e d , S a r g e n t ' s
g r a v e is the only 1812 v e t e r a n ' s g r a v e in this section
of the state. Only a few of the s o l d i e r s of this second
struggle with England ever came to Michigan because
of the unfavorable r e p o r t given to the homesteading
c o m m i t t e e which, at the close of the w a r , was appointed to s e c u r e a good t r a c t of two million a c r e s to be
apportioned in land g r a n t s as a bonus.

'Michigan was then a p a r t of the Northwest T e r r i t o r y of which the capital was Chillicothe, Ohio. According to the report of s u r v e y o r s , Michigan was full
of i m p a s s a b l e swamps and dense f o r e s t s . The m o s quitoes w e r e t e r r i b l e , the soil was not fit for a g r i cultural p u r p o s e s . Hence it was most unsuited for
p a r c e l l i n g out to the veterans who d e s e r v e d the best
that the young nation then could fine for its h e r o e s .
"Why J o b Sargent e v e r came to Michigan will
never be known but he c a m e to the White I ^ k e r e g ion in 1817, being one of the very f i r s t white men to
settle in the region long before the lumbering o p e r -

of his weakened condition. He died shortly a f t e r that.
Although John Dill could have told M r s . H e r r e n
much about her husband she never went to s e e him
a s she could not bear to talk about what happened
in the prison.
A g r e a t grandson of John Herren, Rufus Hunt
of Montague, r e m e m b e r s as a s m a l l boy hearing John
Dill talk about the war and Andersonville Prison.
It was all a long, long time ago - - but that is
why we o b s e r v e Memorial Day - - lest we forget.
Many new attractions will greet museum visitors

Wendell Lipka, d i r e c t o r of
the museum, proudly showing the latest donation to
the museum which will open
Saturday for the s u m m e r
season. The addition of a
manikin (called M i s s T o m lin. a f t e r Lily Tomlin),
comp'ete with headset, jack

to dial a number, gives a
lifelike quality to the d i s play.

The Montague Historical M j s e u m will open for
its 11th y e a r on May 31.
Many new a t t r a c t i o n s will g r e e t the v i s i t o r s this
s u m m e r . Through cooperation of General Telephone
Company the museum was able to a c q u i r e the Occidental Hotel exchange before that building was demolished.
It is now set up attractively with a manikin in charge
of the switch board.
A d r o p ceiling has been installed in the Indian
room, the old fashioned dentist office is now comPleted, carpeting has been laid in this area and an old
t i m e beauty parlor and a " C h r i s t m a s in S u m m e r "
display a r e among the new innovations.
In March of this year Maria Quinlan, historian
for the s t a t e of M.'chigan and Ruby Rogers, curator
of collections for the state, visited the m u s e u m . Of
s p e c i a l i n t e r e s t to them was a set of 82 l e d g e r s and
journals donated to the museum by the Covell Lumb e r Co. T h e books date back to 1858. Maria Quinlan
asked for a loan of these r e c o r d s and will u s e them
a s m a t e r i a l to write a t h e s i s for her doctorate. vVhen
finished s h e will donate a copy of her work to the museum.
The bicentennial, however, has been the theme
f o r this s u m m e r ' s displays. Eighteen manikins, some
of which a r e children, w e r e donated by S e a r s of Muskegon and have been d r e s s e d in colonial c o s t u m e s by
women of the a r e a .
E v e r e t t Gee, Whitehall a r t i s t , t r a n s f o r m e d two
manikins into Indians which w e r e d r e s s e d in keeping
with Indian tradition, and one into a young black girl.
Special tours have a l r e a d y been scheduled and
an "Appreciation D a y " is planned for August 2 and 3,
to e n t e r t a i n Montague, Montague Township and White
R i v e r Township officials and citizens who have helped finance the museum.
They will be open two afternoons a week (Satu r d a y s and Sunday) f r o m 1 to 5 p.m. during J u n e and
September and four a f t e r n o o n s a week during July
and August (Wednesdays, F r i d a y s , Saturdays and Sundays).

John Eiiots resigns from Montague City Conncii
May 28, 1975, Page 4
By HELEN PANZL
The Montague City Council meeting May 19 was
a l s o a public hearing on the 75-76 budget but only one
citizen was present to voice a complaint - - Tom Wond e r s — who. since he is no longer on the council said
he could now see things f r o m the t a x p a y e r ' s viewpoint.
" I want to commend you f o r dropping the millage
f r o m 17 to 16-1/2, but I still think it should be down
to 15 mills to be in line with other a r e a s , " he said.
The budget, which is higher than last y e a r ' s by
$30,000, h a s been a m a j o r concern of the council.
C a r o l Rolph, Montague city clerk, explained, howe v e r , that t h e r e have been rising c o s t s in all d e p a r t m e n t s of t h e city. T h e police department alone e x p e r ienced a $13,000 r i s e in expenditures over those of the
p r e v i o u s y e a r due to increased s a l a r i e s and the p u r c h a s e of a new c r u i s e r . The budget will b e formally
adopted at the next council meeting, June 2.
More tax r e v e n u e s a r e expected, however, due
to the i n c r e a s e in property valuation.
Councilman John E i l e r s spoke on the r e c o m m e n dation of the s t r e e t department for a s t r e e t sweeper.
T h r e e bids had been received with a variance in p r i c e
of $150. Council approved a bid from Northern Equipment Company of $2,270.
J i m Lilligan, White Lake Community School d i r ector, explained t h e i r s u m m e r p r o g r a m which is very
s i m i l a r to those of the last two y e a r s . A survey among
Whitehall and Montague school children showed m o s t
favored continuing with the s a m e program supplemented with a few new i d e a s . He requested the usual donation but some study will be made as to whether townships should a l s o contribute to the fund since the p r o g r a m i s open to everyone.
Supt. Robert Hunter announced that a hearing for
the proposed White Lake boat ordinance is to be held
June 2 at 3 p.m. a t Montague City Hall a s announced
by the Michigan Waterways Commission.
The proposed addition to the f i r e b a r n s t r u c k
another snag when it was reported that the gas pump
and septic tank will have to be moved. Holding tanks
w ich could be pumped out w e r e recommended to r e place the septic tank. There is also a decision to be
made as to whether the building should be 45 foot

has been received on the 45 ft. by 26 ft. building with
$1,500 *0 cover e x t r a s . The heavy,* overhead doors
w e r e not included in this f i g u r e .
••That's quite a chunk of m o n e y , " said Councilman J i m Kenny, " m a y b e we should look into patting
up a pole type building."
Councilman Robert Todd questioned how to finance it. However, the council agreed to go along
with an addition which would match tne p r e s e n t s t r u c t u r e as soon a s it is known exactly what the f i r e department wants. A meeting with F i r e Chief C a r l Schultz
is planned a f t e r which council will ask for bids on the
construction.
On a happier note, Supt. Hunter stated t h e r e is
a K uod chance now that a government g r a n t win be
available which will r e t u r n to the city 80 per cent
of the engineering fees incurred on the sewer collection s y s t e m in connection with the wastewater s y s t e m . The city has spent $20,000 in engineering f e e s '

Word has a l s o been received that work on the

Chief Cloutier was given authorization to ask

A letter was received asking that the launch

the F i s h - o - r a m a p r o g r a m , on the evening of .juI^ 26.
P e r m i s s i o n was g r a n t e d .
Supt. Hunter explained a plan being contemplated between Muskegon and Muskegon Heights to . h i r e
full time plumbing i n s p e c t o r s in connection with the
Uniform Plumbing Cod'3 recently adopted by Montague.
Other cities w e r e eligible to use t h e i r s e r v i c e s by
helping pay t n e i r s a l a r i e s of approximately $20,000
each. Montague would be asked to advance 30 cents
per capita, a cost to the city of $720. More study of
the proposal will be made.
Rieth-Riley Construction Co. of Muskegon was
awarded the contract for Montague s t r e e t work for

include paving the launch r a m p road at $16,751; Hunt

If you and/or your working spouse are not covered by a retirement program, you can
gain the tax advantages provided under the Pension Reform Act of 1974 by establishing an Individual Retirement Account at Muskegon Federal Savings. Each year, you
can deposit up to $1500 or 15% of your annual earned income (whichever is less), with
your full deposit deductible for income tax purposes. The interest earned and compounded on your account is tax-free until retirement. And, at Muskegon Federal
Savings, you can earn the highest savings rates available. In short, the Individual
Retirement Account lets you defer taxes on retirement monies until you withdraw
them during the retirement years. And at Muskegon Federal Savings, your retirement

Remember when you could send a postcard f o r 30,
and f o r only 50 you could buy a candy bar ? When
150 bought you a hot dog and 100 a r e f r e s h i n g root
beer? You probably didn't know, but that also was
the year your parents could buy a kilowatthour of
electricity from us f o r 2.38 cents.
Things have changed a lot since 1960...music,
politics, sports, our entire life style - and prices.
Especially prices! F o r example, the same 100 root
beer today will cost you 250. Why ? Because sugar
is essential in making root beer. And as the price
of s u g a r ^ o e s up, so does root beer. T h a t ' s exactly
w h a t has happened to the price of our
kilowatthour.
Prices have soared f o r j u s t about everything we
buy. A coal-burning power plant, comparable in
s i ^ to one built in 1960, would cost us over f o u r
times more to build, today, t h a n 15 years ago. The
equipment used to protect the natural environment adds f r o m 15 to 40 percent to the cost of new
generating stations. And the cost of coal used in
electric generation has more t h a n doubled.
Everyone's biggest challenge, yours and ours, is
to make ends meet in these inflationary times.
And we will be the first to admit t h a t it isn't easy.
So, along with the price of everything else, the
price we must charge you f o r electric service has
been increasing. However, the average price you
pay today f o r electricity has only increased
approximately one cent per kilowatthour since
1960. And, when you consider w h a t inflation has
done over the past 15 years to the price of almost
everything - including a root beer - we hope you
will think your electric service is still a good buy.
