Festival Quick Guide
Welcome to the 2009 AFI DALLAS International Film Festival,
Founding Sponsor Victory Park, Presenting Sponsor NorthPark Center
AFI DALLAS 2009 is a reason to celebrate. Celebrate the independent spirit of talented filmmakers;
celebrate the undeniable pleasure it brings to watch their art form unfold on the screen; celebrate the
support the citizens of Dallas have provided to bring this Festival to the masses.
For the next eight days, we hope AFI DALLAS will inspire you to focus on the possibilities of life. We hope
to continue to fuel your passion for film. The Festival can provide a wonderful escape where filmmakers
make everything possible.
AFI DALLAS has a plethora of film and entertainment choices. We encourage you to choose whatever
suits your fancy. We will present more than 180 screenings from filmmakers around the world, many of
who will be in attendance; daily panel discussions with movie greats; red carpet celebrations; parties and
special events. From celebrations of independent filmmakers’ first films to the esteemed AFI DALLAS Star
Award recipients, there is something for everyone. The variety provided by AFI DALLAS is the perfect
complement to our extraordinary city.
A special mention for Anne and Steven Stodghill, our Festival Chairs, who have energized us all with their
incredible efforts. Our eternal graditude to our founder, Liener Temerlin. And finally, the biggest celebration
is reserved for Ruth O’Donnell Mutch, to whom this festival is dedicated. As the first AFI DALLAS donor,
she has been with us since day one, and without her we would not be the Festival we are today.
We also must celebrate the people who work tirelessly to bring this Festival to you: Our sponsors, our
dedicated Board of Directors, our staff and the incredible team of volunteers who have contributed
significantly to make this Festival happen. Thank you!

2009 AFI DALLAS STAR AWARD RECIPIENTS
THE AFI DALLAS STAR AWARD HONORS INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE MADE IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTIONS
TO SHAPING THE FACE OF MODERN CINEMA AND THE ADVANCEMENT OF FILM.
The AFI DALLAS Star Award, designed by
Steuben Crystal, is courtesy of Neiman Marcus.
Kathryn Bigelow
Adrien Brody
Rita Hayworth
Kathryn Bigelow’s critically lauded body of work includes
such cult classics as the vampire-Western Near Dark and
the action-heist Point Break, as well as the science fiction
thriller Strange Days and the Cold War submarine drama,
K-19: The Widowmaker. Known for breaking cinematic
ground with intensely original visuals and cutting-edge
subjects, Bigelow’s latest offering is the character-driven
war thriller The Hurt Locker.
From his first leading role in Steven Soderbergh’s King
of the Hill, to his role as Holocaust survivor Wladyslaw
Szpilman in Roman Polanski’s The Pianist — which earned
him the 2003 Academy Award for Best Actor — Adrien
Brody’s body of work has impressed audiences and critics
alike. His more than 40 roles for film and television include
turns in The Jacket, The Darjeeling Limited and The
Brothers Bloom.
A fan magazine writer once called her a “shy siren,” an
oxymoron that well describes the tensions in — as well as
the enduring popularity of — Rita Hayworth’s all-American
but exotic, and glamorous, image. She made more than
60 movies, including such well-known and well-respected
films as You’ll Never Get Rich, Cover Girl, The Lady from
Shanghai and Miss Sadie Thompson.
Kathryn Bigelow will accept the AFI DALLAS Star Award at
the Centerpiece Screening of The Hurt Locker on March 28.
Adrien Brody will accept the AFI DALLAS Star Award at the
Opening Night Screening of The Brothers Bloom on March 26.
Henry Selick
Robert Towne
Henry Selick is the director, production designer and
screenplay adapter for Coraline, the first stop-motion
animated feature film ever produced in stereoscopic 3-D.
His feature film directorial projects, including the iconic
Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant
Peach, have won numerous awards and established his
reputation as one of the leading directors working in
animation today.
The four-time Academy Award nominee is best known
for his Oscar-winning classic, Chinatown. His many
screenwriting credits include Mission: Impossible 1 and 2,
The Firm, Greystoke, Shampoo, Days of Thunder and The
Last Detail. Towne has directed four of his own scripts:
most recently, Ask the Dust, which stars Colin Farrell and
Salma Hayek; Personal Best; Tequila Sunrise; and Without
Limits, his critically acclaimed feature film about the great
Oregon distance runner Steve Prefontaine.
Henry Selick will accept the Texas Avery Animation Award
on March 31, 7:00 p.m., at The Nasher Sculpture Center .
TEXAS AVERY ANIMATION AWARD
Presented by Reel FX Entertainment
Robert Towne will receive the AFI DALLAS Star Award at
the 35th-anniversary screening of Chinatown on March 27.
Renowned Time magazine journalist Richard Schickel will
conduct an open dialogue with the filmmaker.
6 | STAR AWARD RECIPIENTS | 2009 AFI DALLAS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
Rita Hayworth’s daughter, Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, will
accept the AFI DALLAS Star Award on her behalf at the
screening of Gilda, in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s
Association, on April 2.

Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger star in writer and director
Guillermo Arriaga’s multi-threaded story about people
seeking redemption.
The characters seem to be unrelated: a Portland, Ore., restaurant
manager who has meaningless sexual encounters; a New
Mexican couple in the throes of an illicit affair; a 16-year-old girl
on a dangerous border crossing. But Arriaga brings them together
as only the Academy Award-nominated writer of Amores perros,

The Missing Person
Morenita

Matt Aselton’s quirky romantic comedy
examines the mixed feelings we have about our
families and our struggles to fit in through the
story of Brian, a “surprise child” who never feels
he belongs. His attempts to adopt a Chinese
baby and his relationship with Harriet force him
to confront his internal conflicts.
Private detective John Rosow is hired to tail
a man traveling with a boy from Chicago to
L.A. Eventually he discovers the man is one of
the missing victims of 9/11 and the detective
attempts to bring the man back to New York and
cash in on a reward.
This is the story of Mateo Cruz, who is out of
options to repay a debt. He takes a religious
icon and holds it for ransom, setting off a
complicated chain of events. Morenita explores
how desperation can take us to our darkest side.
This story follows the life of Sandra Laing, who,
despite being born to white Afrikaner parents,
has light brown skin and curly hair. Sandra’s
parents set out to have her legally classified as
“white” in apartheid-era South Africa, setting in
motion a legal battle that marks Sandra with the
strength and self-awareness that enable her to
embrace her identity.

Whatever It Takes
A Southern small-town high school prepares for
its first racially integrated prom. Unbelievably,
the year is 2008, and actor Morgan Freeman has

white dances. Director Paul Saltzman follows

the big day and deal with change and racism.
Kim Longinotto documents four South African
women determined to stem sexual abuse in their
country. Through their nonprofit group Bobbi

explain their abuse, the women battle racial,
socioeconomic and cultural barriers.
The film is an inside look at the Bronx Center for

Hunger
Lightbulb
Like Dandelion Dust
Lymelife
Though ostensibly about the 1981 hunger
strike initiated by Irish Republican Army
leader Bobby Sands, this poetic-realist debut
by Steve McQueen ventures into far deeper
territory, seeking to visually articulate the very
nature of oppression and resistance.
A blundering inventor and his friend, a smoothtalking salesman, are out to invent something
that can change the world. Success eludes
them until they come upon a sure-fire invention,
but their friendship may suffer for their success.
Jack and Molly Campbell enjoy life with their
6-year-old son, Joey. But Joey’s biological
father has been released from prison and a
judge grants him custody. Jack and Molly have
a desperate and dangerous thought: What if
they can devise a way out? Based on the book
by Karen Kingsbury.
Drawing from their own childhoods, the
Martini brothers bring a sense of place and
authenticity to Lymelife. Their funny and
emotionally devastating script poignantly
reinvents both the suburban drama and the
coming-of-age story at the same time.

Valentino: The Last Emperor
The lone occupant of a lunar mining base, Sam
combats his isolation by interacting with the
station’s robotic computer, Gerty. But Sam is
beginning to unravel. After he crashes his lunar
rover, he wakes up in the sick bay and realizes
that his life at the base is not what it seems.
Jay DiPietro shows us a bickering Manhattan
couple and then shows us how they became
that way. The story goes back and forth in time,
exploring how a young couple in love became
two people who can barely stand each other.
When Sugar, a gifted 19-year-old Dominican
pitcher, gets called up to the American minor
leagues, it seems a dream fulfilled for him, his
family and his community. But life on the road
and under the glare of the lights carries more
challenges than the young man imagined.
Produced and directed by Matt Tyrnauer, the
film is an intimate, engaging and funny fly-onthe-wall exploration of one of Italy’s richest
and most famous men, legendary designer
Valentino Garavani.

The Dungeon Masters
Roman Polanski’s elegant take on the 1930s
hard-boiled detective genre is an outstanding
example of why the ‘70s is considered one
of Hollywood’s great eras. Robert Towne’s
screenplay, loosely inspired by the often-shady
dealings behind the transformation of arid Los
Angeles into a sprawling metropolis, is both
quotable and complex.
An insurance agent, Walter Neff, meets Phyllis
Dietrichson when she renews her husband’s
auto insurance policy. An attraction begins and
the two plot to murder Mr. Dietrichson for his
life insurance money, until the plan goes awry.
Director Doug Pray explores the genesis
of modern advertising. This look inside the
creative and operational process peels back
the wrapper of some of the most successful
campaigns of our time and profiles some of
the industry’s living legends.
Following three Dungeon Masters, Keven
McAlester explores the Dungeons & Dragons
subculture. The film follows the three as they
struggle to maintain a creative life in the face
of dire personal consequences.

Gilda
Food, Inc.
The Garden
“Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” and
Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell are after
their fair share! A classic splashy Technicolor
musical comedy about the exploits of “two
little girls from Little Rock” as they take on
the U.S. Olympic team and all of Paris in their
quest for riches and romance.
The 1946 film noir places Rita Hayworth
between two men: the wealthy owner of
an illegal casino Ballin Mundson (George
Macready) and his fanatically loyal criminalturned-right-hand-man Johnny Farrell (Glenn
Ford). As Gilda, Hayworth uses her charm and
sex appeal to wind up with Mundson’s money
and Farrell’s heart.
Robert Kenner takes an unsalted look at
America’s industrial food system — dirty cattle
lots, genetically modified veggies, fast food
chains and processing plants. Using hidden
and handheld cameras, Kenner shows us
shocking examples of both animal and farm
worker abuse. They’ll make you reconsider
where your dinner comes from.
In the heart of South Central LA, a lush
community garden rose from the ashes of
the 1992 riots. But in Dec. 2003, bulldozers
poised to level the urban oasis. Scott Hamilton
Kennedy captures the story from the moment
the farmers receive eviction notices to the final
verdict and shocking aftermath.

Hellcats
Kassim: The Dream
Lulu & Jimi
When Chand, a Punjabi immigrant, arrives in
Ontario, she finds that she’s left her family to
join a strange suburban neighborhood and an
abusive husband. She meets Rosa, a Jamaican
woman who gives her a root to change her
husband, but its effects lead Chand down a
path between reality and fantasy.
Hellcats is a sweet, sexy and smart romantic
comedy that takes a realistic view of the
modern Korean single woman from the
viewpoint of three women of different
ages who live together. Terrifically acted
and confidently directed, this is a film that
transcends the “chick flick” genre.
Kassim “The Dream” Ouma is the 2004 IBF
Junior Middleweight champion of the world
and a former Ugandan child soldier who was
abducted into a rebel army at the age of 6.
Kassim wants to return to his homeland, but
the Ugandan government is bent on trying him
for desertion.
It’s 1950s Germany and a wealthy white girl,
Lulu, falls in love with a handsome black man,
Jimi, at an amusement park. Lulu’s family and
friends try to damage the relationship, but the
couple fearlessly carries on against a backdrop
of rock ‘n’ roll and stunning visuals.

Desdemona: A Love Story
One Nation
Raj is a down-on-his-luck dancer caught in a
quagmire of failure and misery. But a chance
encounter with Jyoti turns his life around. Jyoti
brings together a motley group of dancers
to join Raj’s dance class and they discover
themselves, finding love and acceptance

and crosses the border, leaving everybody he
knows behind. Lonely in America, he befriends
Rod and discovers that his first love also is

The directors may have been too young to
experience the Martin Luther King Jr. and
Bobby Kennedy assassinations, Richard
Nixon’s election, the Olympics and the Vietnam
War. But they take images from TV, photographs and the music of the era and mix the
events of 1968 in a fresh and thoughtful way.

The Other Side of Paradise
St. Nick
Falling somewhere between a road adventure
and a love story, The Other Side of Paradise
is a well-crafted film. While Justin D. Hilliard’s
feature is packed with plenty of laughs, it also
has a stark, poignant honesty. This is a strong
ensemble acting piece, anchored by Arianne
Martin’s compelling performance as Rose.
St. Nick is the story of a brother and sister on
the run. He’s 11; she’s 9. They’re living in the
woods, doing what they can to survive. As the
bitter Texas winter sets in, they hole up in an
abandoned house and, for a brief, bittersweet
period, escape the harsh realities of their
circumstances.

Focusing on the military ritual of getting
tattooed, Tattooed Under Fire weaves the

Centering on the mash-up musician, Girl Talk,
Rip: A Remix Manifesto explores issues of
copyright in the information age, mashing up
the modern media landscape and shattering
the wall between users and producers.
Robert Knight has photographed The Rolling
Stones, Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton, and has
taken some of the last photos of Jimi Hendrix
and Stevie Ray Vaughan. This fascinating
documentary follows Knight’s career, his

Set in the multicultural inner-cities of the

AFI DALLAS EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
Education is a vital component of the AFI DALLAS mission and programming.
In addition to Q&A sessions and panels at the Festival’s venues, AFI DALLAS holds an annual
series of masterclasses with internationally known filmmakers, composers, producers and
actors at SMU, TCU and other area universities. Masterclasses are also presented for high
school students from all over North Texas.
HAZE
The Least Among You
In support of our mission of educating the next generation of filmmakers, short films from
area universities and high schools will be presented in special screening sessions during the
Binge drinking on American college campuses
has become a major public health problem.
Centering on the tragic death of former Dallas
resident and University of Colorado student
Gordie Bailey, HAZE investigates what has
happened to our views about social drinking
and what may be some solutions for change.
During the 1965 Watts riots, Richard has to
serve a two-semester probation at an all-white
racist seminary. There he meets Samuel, the
school’s black janitor, who acts as Richard’s
guide through the trials of racism and his
personal demons. But eventually Richard must
make a choice that affects his destiny.

High School Day will be an opportunity for students and educators to network with industry
professionals and filmmakers.
High School Day will take place on Tuesday, March 31 at NorthPark Center. More than 1,000
high school students and teachers from the AFI DALLAS Education Program have been invited
to take part in this inaugural event. The day will be filled with educational panel discussions,
presentations, workshops, group screenings, Q&A sessions and much more.
AFI DALLAS has partnered with Fresh Films and NG Docs, two nationally recognized youth
film programs, to kick off their 2009 activities with participants from last year’s program.
Additionally, we will screen the NG Docs documentary in an afternoon program to teach the
students the guts and glory of documentary filmmaking.
STUDENT SHORTS
Short films from area universities and high schools will again be a highlight of the 2009
Festival. There will be three special screenings of student compilations during the Festival:
the Booker T. Washington Showcase, the High School Showcase and the North Texas College
