We would love to hear from any of our readers if you have had the opportunity to sail on this magnificent ship. Please let us know. “Bic” Waterman is the Virtual Visitor Today I’m onboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA to research two of the world’s greatest passenger shipbuilding companies. These two companies, located in Ireland and Scotland, built some of the most famous ships ever to sail the earth’s oceans. HARLAND & WOLFF, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, was established in 1871. Within twenty years they had built their first ships for the White Star Line. In the early 1900s the growing relationship between H&W and White Star culminated with the construction of the famous “Three Sisters”: The RMS (Royal Mail Ship) Olympic, maiden voyage 1911, was the largest vessel ever built to that time. During World War I she served as a troop transport then returned to passenger service. In 1935 she was sold and scrapped. The RMS Titanic, only voyage 1912, was the second in the series of “Olympic-class” ships built by the White Star Line. The ship sank after colliding with an iceberg on April 12, 1912 with a death toll of 1515. The RMS Britannic, launched in 1914, never carried a fare-paying passenger. During construction she was extensively modified to correct design flaws thought to have contributed to Titanic’s demise. Shortly after her fitting out in 1915 Britannic was requisitioned by the British Admiralty for use as a hospital ship during World War I. In 1916 she was either torpedoed or hit a floating mine. She sank in less than an hour. All but several dozen of the 1125 medical staff and crew were rescued. Today HARLAND & WOLFF builds supertankers and bulk carriers. JOHN BROWN’S SHIPYARD in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland was the birthplace of many of the Cunard flagships, including: The Queen Elizabeth II, maiden voyage 1969. The QE2 was transformed into a troop carrier during the 1982 Falklands War. Today she epitomizes the ultimate in luxury ocean travel. The Queen Mary was launched in 1934 and saw extensive service as a troop carrier during World War II. She remains an elegant example of classic 1930s Art Deco flare and has now “retired” to Long Beach, CA. The Royal Yacht Britannia was launched in 1953. She served the Royal Family for over 40 years and traveled over one million miles to become one of the most famous ships in the world. She was decommissioned in 1997 and is now berthed at Edinburgh’s historic port of Leith. JOHN BROWN’S SHIPYARD has gone out of business. The site, on the River Clyde, is being re-vitalized into housing and parks.
