Submitted by Natasha Graves America, the USA Bible Corner Do you ever wonder where we are headed as the United States of America or find yourself worrying about what is happening to our society? If we are not careful, we can lose our focus. When I remember the first time I looked at the stars through my little telescope, I would get a particular heavenly body in the lens and then it would be gone in seconds. It was a job indeed to follow that object. It is even more difficult to keep our attention focused on those things that made our nation strong and highly respected, such as the book that our founding fathers quoted most often, the Bible. John Quincy Adams said, “The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: that it connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity.” So, Christians, Uncle Sam needs our prayers and God wants our hearts. If we who are God’s people will focus on our relationship with Him, He can and will heal our land ( 2 Chronicles 7:14). The Bible is the automatic focus-adjustor. As we celebrate Independence Day, we should not lose sight of the precious ideals that God has blessed. While God and the Bible are rapidly moving out of view and social media, guns, metal detectors, and predator drones are grabbing our attention, don’t give up on God, but look up, for our redemption is drawing near. Praise God In Christ, Chaplain John Channel 20 Movie Synopses Saturday, July 2 & Monday, July 6 “The Three Stooges, Funniest Moments II” Celebrate Independence Day with more of the hilarious antics of The Three Stooges in part 2 of their best routines. Senior Moments PAGE 3 “The Gown With the Split Down the Back” I was sitting here minding my business, just letting my brain go slack, when in came a nurse with a smile on her face, and a gown with a split in the back. “Take a shower,” she said, “and get ready and get on into this sack. "But what she really was talking about was that gown with a split in the back. split down the back. The guy had some sense of humor who designed this little strip– please, but I fail to see anything funny when it’s my fanny feeling the breeze. I hear them coming to get me, the wheels going clicketyclack. I’ll ride through the halls on a table in a gown with a “We need to do some tests,” she said. Will they stretch me split down the back. out on a rack with nothing ‘twix me and the cold, cold world When I go to heaven, I won’t really care if my robe is but this gown with a split in the back? white, red or black. But now , I'm down on my knees, In the front I'm barely decent, on the sides there is also a a-praying that there's no doggone split down the back. lack, but by far the greatest shortcoming is, that doggone Submitted by a Woodcrest Resident History Snippet In April 1906, all the cottonwood trees and the bandstand around the courthouse were removed. All entertainments on the lawn were forbidden. The intention was to make the courthouse lawn a “beauty spot”. In fact, anyone trespassing on the lawn was subject to arrest and a five dollar fine. In December 1904, the women of Geneva organized a “dark night” society. The town was without street lights at that time and each member of the organization pledged to place a lighted lamp in her front window between dark and nine o’clock at night so that passersby could get home safely after dark fell. The town had previously had a gas lighting system until the town council and the gas company disagreed on terms when a meter system was adopted. Library News PAGE 4 As I’ve mentioned before, the library has a plethora of magazines on a variety of subjects. If you are thinking of donating your magazines to the library, make sure that there isn't a copy of it already available. With so many magazines, it is hard to find a place to store them neatly. Please recycle your magazines if the library already has a copy. Thanks for your help. Reported by Barbara Litterer What’s Up? Last month, it was the raccoons and squirrels that were emptying the birdfeeders. This month, there are times when there isn't a bird in sight. What now? Maybe it has something to do with the Cooper’s hawk, better known as a chicken hawk that landed on my back patio. It flew into the tree branches hiding in the leaves. In the past, I’ve had the hawk land on top of my front porch and have seen it in my neighbor’s yards. These raptors prey on small birds that are injured or small rodents. If you find a large pile of feathers in the grass, a raptor has caught a bird. On the brighter side, an Indigo Bunting was spotted in the area. It is the only native bird that is dark blue all over. They eat blackberries, corn, and dandelion seeds as well as beetles and caterpillars.
