The Kibitzer is Shirley Wright By Jon Shuster, Gainesville, FL Competitive Bidding Tips Shirley: Beginners and intermediates have great difficulty competing at matchpoints. We will look at two situations where they can substantially improve their competitive toughness, making them better partners and more fearsome opposition. 1. Distinguishing competitive from invitational bids. Suppose you are South (neither side vulnerable) and the bidding goes: West North East South 1♥ 1♠ 2♥ P ? 2♠ 3♥ Is North’s 3♥ competitive, trying to push the opponents to 3♠, or is it invitational to game? I have seen this misjudged by beginning players as often as correctly judged. The solution: In that sequence, 3♥ should be strictly to play and any other call is invitational to game. The Maximal Double: Now consider this auction: West North East South 1♠ 2♥ 2♠ ? 3♥ Since in this auction, you hardly ever want to double the opponents for penalties, and you have no intervening suit to invite with, the maximal double, which must be alerted, takes the role of invitation. Partner bids 3♠ to turn down the invitation, 4♠ to accept, or rarely, passes for penalties with a turn down and a good impregnable ♥ stack. If North bids 3♠ over 3♥ in this sequence, it is strictly intended to play 3♠. Maximal doubles also apply to minors. Suppose you hold ♠-J3 ♥-AJ43 ♦-A5 ♣-AKJ104, as South, and the bidding goes: West North East South 1♣ ? 1♠ 2♣ (1) 2♠ (1) 5-9 HCP, exactly 4♣ Since 3♣ is strictly to play, and 2NT is 18-19 with a ♠ stopper, the only bid left for an invitation is a maximal double. Very few pairs reached the ice cold 5♣ contract: North held ♠-854 ♥-Q ♦-KJ942 ♣-Q953. 2. Competing with early planning In competition, the idea is to be a cooperative partner and an obstructive opponent. Often the bidding goes something like this. West 1♠ 22 North 2♥ East P South ? ACBL District 9 You have enough to compete to 3♥ if forced to, but hope to buy the hand for 2♥. You need to strike while the iron is hot. As above, your 3♥ bid is a closeout bid. You will cue bid with invitational values or better. Be assured that the bidding is most unlikely to die at 2♥, so your pass would aid and abet the enemy. Bad things are likely: (a) West gets a chance to bid 2♠ (usually showing six) and East may come to life with 3♠ over your delayed 3♥; (b) West may double for takeout and EW find a minor suit fit, perhaps even game. A 3♥ call immediately makes life far more difficult for the opponents. Here is an advanced hand that illustrates the strike now philosophy: With neither side vul, you (South) hold ♠-Q54 ♥-A74 ♦-75 ♣-KQ643 West North East South X (1) ? 1♥ 2♦ (1) Negative, promises 4♠ There appears to be lots of points in this deck, so you should presume partner has a relatively weak hand with some shape, most likely including a six card ♦ suit. It is therefore overwhelmingly likely that the opponents have an eight card major suit fit and are in their comfort zone. If you pass, the opponents easily find it. Moreover, they have lots of room to explore game vs. partial. Since you should have no intention of letting them play at the two level in a major, it is far better to bid 3♣ (Lead directing) immediately and retreat to 3♦ if doubled. You only have 2♦, but your hand is otherwise very strong, so you will be fine in 3♦. Even better, if you play TOPO (Transfers opposite preempts and overcalls-see Sunshine Bridge News Nov/Dec 2011, Page 16, available at the District 9 website), you could safely make a lead directing transfer of 2NT to 3♣, before retreating to 3♦ over partner’s expected 3♣ response. This avoids playing undoubled in 3♣. The actual bidding on this hand went: West North East South X P 1♥ 2♦ P P 2♠ 3♠ P P Had you intervened with 3♣ (or 2NT TOPO) over the Double, West would have bid 3♠ and East, with no invitational room, would have bid 4♠. Nine tricks were the limit in ♠ on the hand for EW. Lesson: Putting pressure on the opponents is extremely important, and this is best accomplished by immediate action. How high are you willing to go? That is what you should bid immediately in most situations. ATTENTION - DISTRICT 9 PLAYERS If you serve on an Appeals Committee at any District 9 Regional, you will be thanked with scrip for a free play, good for one year from the date you serve on the committee. www.District9ACBL.org23 Another of Scotland’s Finest By Barnet Shenkin With Scotland’s Andy Murray winning Wimbeldon , the first Scot since 1896 , I thought it may be appropriate to pay tribute to another great Scotsman, this time in the bridge world. Hugh Kelsey ,an old friend of mine, was a fine player, but his books surpassed his playing ability. Any serious player ,wishing to improve his game, should try and get hold of some of his collection. Killing Defense at Bridge , one of his earliest, and well ahead of its time, contains many useful ideas, and helped me a lot, in improving my game. Kelsey shows how you should think in the West seat, in the following hand N 1♣ 3N You ♠2 ♥ J64 ♦ QJ952 ♣ 8532 E 1♠ all pass ♠ Q95 ♥ AQ95 ♦ A6 ♣ AQ94 S 1N W ( you) P You dutifully lead your spade, partner wins the Ace and returns the ♠J. Declarer wins the ♠K and you pitch a club. Now comes a heart to the Q, and partner’s king. Now East plays the ♠8 and South the 10. What do you discard ? ♠2 ♥ J64 ♦ QJ952 ♣ 8532 24 ♠ Q95 ♥ AQ92 ♦ A6 ♣ AQ94 ♠ K104 ♥ 875 ♦ 10843 ♣ KJ10 If declarer has both minor Kings you can’t defeat it. If South has the ♦K only you are probably beating it, as partner has the ♣K, but what if declarer has the ♣K? ♠ AJ8763 ♥ K103 ♦ K7 ♣ 76 In that case, the threat is 2 spades , 4 clubs ,1 diamond and 2 hearts. He may set up the long heart ,by crossing to hand, and leading a heart ,ducking if you play the J, and playing Ace and another if you play low, keeping partner off play. You can stop this by pitching the ♥J on the third spade ,and declarer is left with no resource. Did you find the winning play ? If not don’t worry, look for Kelsey’s book ! ACBL District 9 What is The Common Game? The response was terrific, and I think a good time was had by all who participated. Thanks to Sandra Fleischman for coming up with the idea and executing it so very well. A total of $1,123, including proceeds from the raffle and the Swiss Team event, was donated to the All Faiths Food Bank. Look for an expanded program next year, with partners available for our I/N players as well. Speaking of our I/N players, coming up the first week-end in October, Saturday and Sunday, October 5 and 6, we will be holding our 0–500 NLM Tournament in conjunction with the In-Between Club. This tournament is restricted to our non-life master players, with Silver Points awarded throughout. Please check the schedule listed in this section for details. Start planning now to get your partners and teammates and come out for a fun week-end. Also, our Fall Sectional will be held November 21–24 at the InBetween Club. It’s not too soon to start making plans now. I hope you will all be there to keep our attendance up and make all of our Volunteers’ work worthwhile. We need your support! Our Youth 4 Bridge Program has a new Director. Iris Wilson will be coordinating our efforts in this area. My sincere thanks to Jim Russell, who is turning over the reins to Iris. Jim has served ably as Coordinator for the past few years. Anyone who is interested in getting involved in this very rewarding endeavor should contact Iris at 941-377-3260. Carol Hamilton was the event organizer. An outstanding feature was the lottery conducted by Sandra Fleischman that raised $710 for the All Faiths Food Bank, this year’s charity. Seven local experts who donated a club game in partnership with the lucky winners were Larry Auerbach, Gloria Bart, Les Bart, Harriette Buckman, Bette Cohn, Terry McHenry, and Jim Russell. The bridge event raised an additional $413 for the charity. The winners were: Flight A, First: Roger Johnson, Ed Maier, Doris McGinley, John Veltri Second: Gloria & Les Bart, Sandra & Dick Fleischman Flight B, First: Brian Howard, Luke Liccini, Nanette Meyer, Gael Westall Second: Mona Karna, Dev Pathak, Anita Smith, Margaret Tominosky Flight C: First: Mona Karna, Dev Pathak, Anita Smith, Margaret Tominosky Second: Mariann Berge, Gloria Frydman, Evelyn Maurer, Judith Silverman 72% Club % Players 74.37 Jane Canter & Terry McHenry* 73.62 Susan & Michael Gilbert 72.25 Sandra & Dick Fleischman 72.17 Sarah Albert & Gloria Bart * a mother/son pair Venue In-Between DBC In-Between DBC Intercity DBC In-Between DBC Date June 24 July 13 July 25 June 28 Submit 72% Games to Dick Fleischman at [email protected] Required Information for Listing: 1.date of the game, club name, and whether the club is open or invitational 2.exact percentage score (i.e., 72.37) 3.competition level (e.g., open or any game with upper/lower masterpoint restrictions) 4.games must have a minimum size of six full tables to be listed New to Unit 102 The Suncoast Bridge Association is delighted to welcome with open arms the following 6 new ACBL members: Unit 102 Marlene Benson Janice Hollister Sandra Levison Kathryn Meier Virginia Montgomery Alan Siegel 27 UNIT 102 BOARD JOTTINGS A report was given on the May sectional, chaired by Jim Russell. The sectional turned last year’s loss into a $137 gain, excellent for the off-season event. Gloria Bart and Jack Hawes were appointed to join Sandra Fleischman on the committee to review the Unit’s by-laws and make recommendations to the Board. In order to better coordinate the Unit’s tournaments and to maintain a greater volume of historical information on them, Sandy Lewis was named Tournament Coordinator and Harriette Buckman was appointed Record Keeper. It was decided to hold an annual meeting, perhaps a brunch, for all directors of invitational and open clubs in the unit to discuss changes in ACBL rules and other matters of a common interest. Sheila Pies was named Club Liaison to the Board. Sinai Temple of Sarasota was designated the venue for next year’s Anniversary Swiss, but because of conflicting Jewish holidays on all Sundays in March, the event will be held at the In-Between. It was also decided to move the start time to 10:00 AM, an hour earlier than this year. Cynthia Murphy and Doris Linton discussed various topics related to the November I/N tournament (see flyer in this issue). Don’t miss the upcoming November sectional (flyer in this issue). 0-500 NLM Silver Sectional • October 5-6, 2013 Sponsored by the In-Between Bridge Club & Unit 102 Town & Country Plaza, 501 N. President's Message ATLANTA NATIONAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS HIGHLIGHTS: NEW UNIT FORMATION, SHELL COAST OF FLORIDA Motion moved that: The area along the Gulf Coast of Florida encompassing Venice in the north to Marco Island in the south to include Sarasota County not in Unit 102, Charlotte County, Lee County and Hendry and Collier Counties west of CR29 be formed into a new Unit. Decision of the board: Motion deferred until the Fall 2013 National Board meeting in Phoenix. Action item: Management will poll the members of the affected area through electronic Balloting to those who have e-mail. This poll will ask the members if they wish to form a new Unit and the results of this poll will be reported to Governance Committee on or before the Phoenix meetings. This poll will allow tabulation by postal zip code. Membership list as of September 3, 2013 will be used for the purpose of the poll. Comment: It is important that all members living in the affected area take this opportunity to answer the e-mail from ACBL and to voice your wishes regarding the formation of a new Unit. You will be given the choice to say Yes, No, or I don’t care. REGIONALS AT SEA Motion moved that: The ACBL Codification, section 131.55 is amended as follows: The ACBL and only the ACBL shall be permitted to sponsor Regionals at Sea (“RaS”) The ACBL may sponsor up to four RaS per year. ACBL Management shall, to the best of their ability, attempt to have each depart from a different geographic “area”, and not to conflict with land-based Regionals. The areas are defined as East Coast (Atlantic other than Florida), West Coast (Pacific) and Gulf Coast (Gulf of Mexico plus the entire Florida coast.) Except as specified in this motion, RaS must conform to the same rules and Regulations as land-based Regionals. AMENDED PART OF MOTION – The following stipulations as to conflicting with Florida land based Regionals has been deleted from the condification: “No RaS may be conducted concurrently with any portion of a land based Regional tournament held either within 200 miles of or within the same District as such RaS’s port of embarkation or debarkation absent written consent of the District Director/s from affected District/s. AMENDED PART OF MOTION: – RaS are exempt from the rules regarding maximum tournament sessions and days. The tournament schedule will be determined by the tournament manager subject to the approval of the ACBL staff. Comment: Neither amendment is good news for our Florida Regionals. In the past when a RaS has been conducted in conflict with a Land-based Regional, the Land-based Regional has suffered loss of tables… which equates to loss of hotel guaranteed room nights. I am sure ACBL Management will do its best to protect our Regionals. One such option has been at the JCC North on PGA Blvd. in Palm Beach Gardens. The players who have enjoyed playing at the "old" facility will no doubt love the brand new, 56,000 sq. ft. Mandel JCC building which is set to open as we are going to press with this issue of the SBN. The Wednesday game is moving to the new building as soon as the building is open. Then, beginning on October 14th, an exciting five-days-a-week schedule will be unveiled. To be known as the Stayman Memorial Bridge Program, there will be afternoon games, Monday through Friday, with a light lunch served at 11:45 and the games beginning promptly at 12:30. You can see all the details, at the ad on page 4 of this SBN. Brand new JCC, grand new schedule of games, and three brand new directors. But did you know that Tubby Stayman was a dynamic force in bringing a sanctioned bridge game to the JCC, twenty years ago? Rumor has it that Tubby will soon celebrate her 90th birthday. Now she looks forward to the special fund-raiser planned in February, a pro-am game where you can earn extra masterpoints and help support the new facility. In the meantime, plan to attend the kick-off seminar presented by Marty Bergen, one of District 9's all-time favorite bridge teachers. That will take place on Wednesday, October 16th, and from all accounts given by past attendees at Marty Bergen seminars, you will be very glad you decide to attend! Also be prepared to enjoy the new state of the art equipment generously donated by Barbara & Michael Wildstein, and Vicki & Stephen Wildstein. There will be electronic scoring machines (BridgeMates) and a dealing machine, which will allow participation in The Common Game, adding an extra dimension to your enjoyment after the game when going over your scores. Sally Swing will be directing on Mondays beginning on October 14th, Dan Handler on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and Elliot Slavis will be the Friday director. Special thanks to Sam Brams and Liz Dennis who have been helping JCC bridge players elevate their game. Liz is a fairly recent teacher while Sam has been around "from the beginning", coming to the JCC with Tubby at the beginning of the bridge program twenty years ago. Liz has gone above and beyond the usual duties of a director to help build up the Wednesday game (and the in-season Monday game). Sally Swing Tubby Stayman Liz Dennis Sam Brams Dan Handler Questions? including how to find the Mandel JCC on Hood Road in Palm Beach Gardens: call Rhonda Gordon at (561) 689-7700 or email her at RhondaG@ JCConline.com. Elliot Slavis Unit 128 37 CLUB NEWS The Villages Bridge Club sponsored its first ever sectional tournament in June, an unusual opportunity for outsiders to play duplicate at The Villages. There were 328 tables with 311 players earning a total of 1212.86 masterpoints. None other than the ACBL’s Silver Point champion for 2011 and 2012, John Brady of Jacksonville, was the biggest winner at The Villages Sectional, also. Prior to the tournament, The Villages Bridge Club was pleased to be featured in a nice article with several photos, in The Villages Daily Sun, which has been called America’s fastest growing daily newspaper. The players pictured in the article were Paul Matheson, Bess Bailey, Pat DeArmond, Cathy Thomas, Ruth Srulevitch and Margaret Sarno. The article specifically mentioned the novice-mentor program which has a special game at 1 pm on the third Sunday of the month at Laurel Manor Recreation Center. If you have interest in that game, you may email Jon Williams at [email protected].
