Our beautiful holiday decorations at the bridge
center were just as smoothly and efficiently put
away as they had been put up thanks to Sandra
Tilch, Mary and Jay Bates, David Hoffman, Dariush
Youssefi, Patti Frederick, Aster Wu, and Loretta
Baines. Sandra Tilch did a terrific job overseeing
the whole decorating process. Thank you, Sandra,
very much, and thank you to everyone who lent
her a hand.
We had a special unit game on January 23
dedicated to supporting Peninsula Youth Bridge
(PYB). We had a delicious potluck lunch first when
it became most apparent that we not only have
skilled card players coming to our bridge center,
but we also have terrific cooks! Jeanie Kwong, a big
contributor to PYB, then spoke very informatively
about the program, its progress, and its status.
Thank you very much, Jeanie.
During our afternoon of bridge, we had fourteen
tables. Judi Littell and Lori Bard were the highest
scorers in the six-table 299er section with a fine
score of 69.33%. Robert Ipswitch and Stan Green
were the highest scorers in the eight-table open
section with an excellent score of 65.77%.
Congratulations to you all! A big thank-you to Mary
Bates for all of her help with the event. A big thankyou as well to Loretta Baines for taking care of
check-in and treasurer duties, to Jackie Lowenberg
for lending a hand as needed, and to Lori Bard and
Marianne Guttas for coordinating yet another most
successful unit game.
Our plan was to give the net proceeds from this
game to Peninsula Youth Bridge. We were eager to
maximize this amount, and we ended up being
quite successful thanks to the following people:


Raad Bunni who most generously
volunteered to direct this game
Patti Frederick who also most generously
supported us
All of you who contributed to the potluck
All of you who came and played
We are now very pleased to announce that on
behalf of the unit, a check for $570.88 has been
sent to the Center for Bridge Education earmarked
for Peninsula Youth Bridge. Wonderful news, and
thank you all again!
We had our first game of this cycle of the
Mentor/Mentee Program on January 21. There
were nine full tables and our overall winners N/S
were Joanne Gates and Marc Renson with a 64.29%
and our overall winners E/W were Alice Redfield
and Aster Wu with a 62.30%. Fine scores indeed,
and congratulations to all of you! The morning
went very smoothly with assorted chances for tips
and pointers cropping up. The next game of this
cycle will be on Thursday, February 18, at 9:00 AM
at the bridge center. Many thanks to Joanne Lewin,
our Mentor/Mentee Program coordinator, and her
team for all of their efforts.
Our unit’s next open sectional on February 20 and
21 is rapidly approaching. Ted Richmond,
tournament coordinator, has been hard at work on
the assorted tasks and details that need attention
when running a sectional, especially with a new
venue. We will be holding this event at Cañada
College in Redwood City, and we are very hopeful
that this will be an enjoyable and convenient
location. Please see the flyer for more details, and
we hope to see you there.
Our annual meeting and unit game are scheduled
for Thursday evening, May 5. In preparation, Ted
Richmond has most generously volunteered to
chair the Nominating Committee for board
members. Loretta Baines, Jackie Lowenberg, Roger
Dewes, and Raad Bunni have also most generously
volunteered to be on the committee. Please
consider serving on the board even if you are
relatively new to the bridge world. Nominations
are to be finalized by March 6, sixty days before
the annual meeting. Thank you, Ted, Loretta,
Jackie, Roger, and Raad, for your help with this
important task. Please contact any of the
committee members if you are interested in being
on the board, or you can sign the notice posted at
the bridge center.
Our next unit game will be on Saturday, March 5, at
the bridge center. Stay tuned for more details. We
hope you will be able to join us.
Finally, our next board meeting is on Tuesday,
February 9, at 3:45 PM also at the bridge center.
We welcome your attendance and feedback. Thank
you all, and we hope to see you at our upcoming
events!
Peninsula Youth Bridge
The committee wishes to thank all those who
attended the winter potluck unit game on
January 23 and helped make it a big success.
We particularly wish to thank Raad Bunni for
directing for free and Patti Frederick for her
great support. The committee also wishes to
thank the Unit 498 board for its support of this
game and their past and ongoing
encouragement of the high school bridge
program.
Nominating Committee
Nominations for four new board members are
now open. We must present our slate of
nominees to the membership by March 6,
2016. The Nominating Committee, consisting
of Ted Richmond, Loretta Baines, and Jackie
Lowenberg, from the Board, and Roger Dewes
and Raad Bunni, at large, will be happy to take
your application, or you may indicate your
willingness by signing the Notice on the
Bulletin Board at the Club.
The Nominating Committee is particularly
looking for one new board member interested
in succeeding Ted Richmond as Sectional
Tournament Chairman. Be Ted's understudy
and assistant for 6 months to one year and then
take over!
