Medical Maintenance -­‐ 5.1.14 NFPA 99 2012 Edi0on for ASSE 6040 Maintenance Personnel 5.1.14.2.1 * General (Maintenance) Health care facili0es with installed medical gas, vacuum, WAGD, or medical support gas systems, or combina0ons thereof, shall develop and document periodic maintenance programs for these systems and their subcomponents as appropriate to the equipment installed. Appropriate qualifica0on shall be demonstrated by any of the following: (1) Training and cer0fica0on through the health care facility by which such persons are employed to work with specific equipment as installed in that facility (2) Creden0aling to the requirements of ASSE 6040, Professional Qualifica0on Standard for Medical Gas Maintenance Personnel (3) Creden0aling to the requirements of ASSE (A) Non-­‐sta0onary booms and ar0cula0ng assemblies, other than head walls u0lizing flexible connectors, shall be tested for leaks, per manufacturer’s recommenda0ons, every 18 months or at a dura0on as determined by a risk assessment. (B) The system pressure to non-­‐sta0onary booms and ar0cula0ng arms shall be maintained at opera0ng pressure un0l each joint has been examined for leakage by effec0ve means of leak detec0on that is safe for use with oxygen. Medical Maintenance -­‐ 5.1.14 NFPA 99 2012 Edi0on for ASSE 6040 Maintenance Personnel 5.1.14.3 -­‐ Medical Gas & Vacuum Systems InformaDon & Warning Signs 5.1.14.3.1 The gas content of medical gas and vacuum piping systems shall be labeled in accordance with 5.1.11.1. 5.1.14.3.2 Labels for shutoff valves shall be in accordance with 5.1.11.2 and updated when modifica0ons are made changing the areas served. (2) They shall be maintained by a qualified rep of the equipment owner. (3) A record of the annual inspec0on shall be available for review by the authority having jurisdic0on. 5.1.14.4.5 A periodic tes0ng procedure for non-­‐flammable medical gas and vacuum and related alarm systems shall be implemented. Medical Maintenance -­‐ 5.1.14 NFPA 99 2012 Edi0on for ASSE 6040 Maintenance Personnel 5.1.14.4 – Maintenance & Record Keeping 5.1.14.4.7 Procedures, as specified, shall be established for the following: (1) Maintenance program for the medical air compressor supply system in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommenda0ons (2) Facility tes0ng and calibra0on procedure that ensures CO monitors are calibrated at least annually or more oien if recommended by the manufacturer (3) Maintenance program for both the medical–surgical vacuum piping system and the secondary equipment aIached to medical–surgical vacuum sta0on inlets to ensure the con0nued good performance of the en0re medical–surgical vacuum system (4) Maintenance program for the WAGD system to ensure performance Medical Maintenance -­‐ 5.1.14 NFPA 99 2012 Edi0on for ASSE 6040 Maintenance Personnel 5.1.14.4 – Maintenance & Record Keeping 5.1.14.4.8 Audible and visual alarm indicators shall meet the following requirements: (1) They shall be periodically tested to determine that they are func0oning properly. (2) Records of the test shall be maintained un0l the next test is performed. Medical Maintenance -­‐ 5.1.14 NFPA 99 2012 Edi0on for ASSE 6040 Maintenance Personnel 5.1.14.4 – Maintenance & Record Keeping 5.1.14.4.9 Medical–surgical vacuum sta0on inlet terminal performance, as required in 5.1.12.3.10.4, shall be tested as follows: (1) On a regular preven0ve maintenance schedule as determined by the facility maintenance staff (2) Based on flow of free air (Nl/min or SCFM) into a sta0on inlet while simultaneously checking the vacuum level Medical Maintenance -­‐ 5.1.14 NFPA 99 2012 Edi0on for ASSE 6040 Maintenance Personnel 5.1.14.4 – Maintenance & Record Keeping Main Line 5.1.14.4.6 Whenever modifica0ons are made that breach the pipeline, any necessary installer and verifica0on test specified in 5.1.12 shall be conducted on the downstream por0ons of the medical gas piping system. A.5.1.15 Medical gas and vacuum systems should be surveyed at least annually for the items that follow and deficient items corrected. A.5.2.1 Sec0on 5.1 covers requirements for Category 1 piped gas and vacuum systems; Sec0on 5.2 covers Category 2 piped gas and vacuum systems; and Sec0on 5.3 covers Category 3 piped gas and vacuum systems.
