It is a role that requires much time and dedication and I will do my best to fulfil. I do lack on time as do others but I remain committed to MQHA, its members and in particular our youth as they are our future. I welcome and encourage comments, suggestions and input from all, and from that hopefully we can work together for a successful 2012 season. I want to on behalf of myself and MQHA extend a very special "Thank You" to Shonda Wilson, our now past President. Shonda has served in this role for several years and has done a TREMENDOUS job and MQHA is indebted to her for the countless hours she has devoted, and for the tiring efforts put forth. She has always worked for the betterment, growth and future of MQHA. A job very well done Shonda!! Thank You! (BTW... I'll be looking for lots of advice) I would like to pass on a special "Thank You" on behalf of MQHA to all past boards members for the efforts, time, work and commitment, a job well done. To our newly elected board members we Thank and Welcome you. We look forward to working together with you, to your new ideas, input, help and commitment to MQHA for the upcoming year. Congratulations to all of our members who competed in Novice youth, Novice Amateur, Amateur and Open divisions, for their excellent accomplishments at this year's All American Quarter Horse Congress. Truly excellent representation for the MQHA and the East Coast. A "Special Congratulations" to those who went on to compete at the World show in November, again... Truly remarkable accomplishments!! We are very proud and happy for each and everyone! Finally, I want to on behalf of MQHA, the board of directors, my wife Shauna and our family wish each of you a Very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous, Healthy and Happy New Year. Marven MacLean, newly elected MQHA President Oct-Nov-Dec 2011 Newsletter Page 5 of 42 I want to take a minute to thank all the MQHA members for allowing me to be their president for last few years. I have learned many things these past years!!!!! The list would be too long to name them all but among the biggest things was patience and how to multitask. My years as president were aided by many great people. From Patti Steeves to always helping with the newsletter and her computer skills, to Sherry Briggs-Derry (I think I finally learned how to calculate the Halter Grand Champions) for keeping track of the points, to the many volunteers who helped at horseshows and equine review and all of the MQHA functions.. Thank you also, to the different board members who have volunteered their time and knowledge- many many THANKS!!!! My years as president have only been as strong as my board members. We have put through some changes and grown through out my term. I know that in Marven's capable hands and leadership the club will continue to grow and continue with the success in the future. They say FRESH EYES FRESH IDEAS!!! Congratulations to all MQHA members who did well at 2011 Congress and AQHA World Show. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Shonda Wilson, outgoing MQHA President First off, I would like to thank the 2011 youth board for all of your hard work. Also I would like to thank the youth directors John Hughes and Shonda Wilson for working extremely hard to make sure our show season was a memorable one. At the meeting at the banquet we voted for our new board. The youth board consists of me, Jenna Hughes, as president, Matthew MacLean as the Vice President, Erin Steeves as the 2nd Vice President, Sarah Langis as the Secretary and Hayden MacLean, Jenny Cunningham, and Nick Steeves as our board members. Our youth directors are the same as last year; John Hughes and Shonda Wilson. At the meeting, we decided that we are going to have a youth weekend again this year. It will be in Moncton around the end of February or first of March but the date and hotel has yet to be decided and should be in the next newsletter. We are also going to have a booth again this year at Equine Review. Plans are under way for decorations and fundraisers. We also decided on having the Youth Team Tournament again at the Summer Sizzler. We had an awesome turn out last year and we hope for the same success again this year. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Although my eight days there involved very little sleep I loved every second of it! My mom and I flew there and as soon as we landed in Columbus the work began. We left a couple days before my first class just so I would have plenty of time to get used to the huge show grounds and get practiced up on my horse, Ripple My Zziple, or Ronnie as he is known to everyone! Thanks to my trainer Kara Dougherty, Ronnie had already been in Columbus for over a week and was already used to the environment there. The first morning began at 3 am for me! In order to ride in the Celeste Arena or Coliseum, you had to get in there before 6 am. The crowds of horses and riders in each arena were incredible. It was hard to watch where I was going because the first couple days I was too busy picking out famous horses and riders that I’ve only seen or read about in magazines or online. Eventually I started to buckle down and get into competition mode. My first class was the Novice Youth Showmanship, with 169 entries. The weather that day was cold and windy and and it rained for most of it, but I was too busy trying to pull myself together enough to get into the ring. Everyone kept telling me “Relax, it’s just another horse show!”, knowing that was mostly true I still couldn't help but think that the Congress is the biggest single breed horse show in the world! When my split was called and I made my way up the shoot to perform my pattern I don’t remember much of what I was feeling....I remember just trying to remind myself and Ronnie, who was surprisingly calm and relaxed, to breath. I breezed through my pattern and walking out of the ring I remember thinking “That wasn’t so bad!”. I was wrong. I was even more nervous standing around waiting for call backs than I was before my pattern. My split finished and my mom and I anxiously awaited the numbers, when they finally called 4005 my mom squealed and after a quick celebration I realized that meant I would have to go back in and try to nail the pattern one more time! Finals didn’t go as perfect as I’d hoped, but the fact that in my first ever Congress class I was a finalist was enough to make me incredibly ecstatic. The rest of the week was filled with more early morning rides and lots of memories were made! NYATT day was a blast. I had two classes back to back followed by the evening ceremonies which involved the team introductions. Everyone on the Maritime team had a great time and I was lucky enough to be able to see each of them show and cheer them on. Congratulations to Raylene, Natalie, Jocelyn and Mikayla for all having a fantastic Congress! I made lots of new friends, met some very interesting people and caught up with friends I had made at Youth World Cup last summer, which was amazing! The weather began to improve by the end of the week when the temperatures increased and the sun came out. The shopping around Congress and the Columbus area was incredible....my mom and I couldn’t stop! My only regret throughout my whole Congress experience was that we didn’t rent a golf cart. Getting anywhere, whether it was to the show rings, practice arenas, food vendors or trade show, required tons of walking! I was so amazed by all the sights and sounds however, that a lot of the time I didn’t even notice the long walking trips Ronnie and I took everyday. Overall, my first experience showing at Congress was one I will certainly never forget. I couldn’t have done it alone! My horse Ronnie was a rockstar all week, I asked more from him then I ever have and he gave his all and acted like an old pro! A big thank you to Kara Dougherty for getting Ronnie to Congress and keeping him in top shape and to the Briggs Stable crew who kept me sane throughout the week! And of course my mom Susan Vaughan, who made this whole trip and experience possible. Oct-Nov-Dec 2011 Newsletter Page 10 of 42 Also, a big thank you to the Maritime Quarter Horse Association for assisting the Youth team in getting there, giving us the opportunity to participate in the National Youth Activities Team Tournament and for providing our team with fantastic bright orange jackets that stood out in the crowd of hundreds. Chris Thompson rode "Sleepin In A EZchair" in the Junior Hunter Under Saddle and placed 9th. Derek Hanscome placed 3rd in the Junior Trail riding Beverly Proffit's horse "OHK Maid Krymsun" earning the coveted Bronze trophy. This was my first year attending Congress, and placing in the top ten in the NYATT Western Pleasure just added to the great experience. I couldn't have made it to that point without the fantastic coaching I received from Amanda Jackson and Mark Katafiasz, and of course the horse which I rode, Electric Range. A very special thank you to Darren Boswall for giving me the opportunity to show such a talented mare. Skowhegan, Maine in May, Sussex, N.B. in June, Skowhegan, Woodstock and Sorel, Quebec in July, Sussex in August and September. We also attended a couple of open shows for those who could not attend the quarter horse shows. Congratulations to those who became World Show Qualifiers, Point earners, Futurity winners and MQHA Year End Award winners. Hard work and Dedication = Success. Our trip to congress in Ohio in October was uneventful compared to last year (our awning coming out twice on the road). Although it was a very cold and rainy week while we were there we got to enjoy some of the halter and pleasure classes and a little rest and relaxation. Three new horses were purchased for the drive home. Oh, I forgot the snow storm we ran into in Connecticut. 60 miles in 4 hours is not a real fast way to get closer to home. In November John and I got to go to our farm in Florida to enjoy the wonderful weather and visit some beautiful farms. We are lucky to have such wonderful staff and wish to let them know how much they are appreciated so we can get away. We want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you all in 2012. John and Wendy Oct-Nov-Dec 2011 Newsletter Page 16 of 42 CONGRESS It all started at three AM when we had to get up to get ready to leave for the airport. By the time you knew it, we were at the airport by four AM. Jocelyn had arrived at the airport by five AM and we were ready to go through security. Our flight was leaving at 6:30 and we would land in Toronto at about 7:15. We boarded the plane and took off. It was a rough flight so we landed a half hour late and we didn’t get off until 8:00 we only had 30 minutes to get through customs and security and run to the other end of the airport. There was no time for walking at this point. Thankfully Air Canada let us cut in front of the line for security. If they hadn’t we would have never made it. We had about two minutes to spare. The lady at the desk said she could not believe that we made our flight to Ohio. Once we landed on Ohio we took a taxi to the grounds. We then stopped and switched to Jeremy’s truck and then he drove us to the trailer. I then walked to the stalls to go see Cooper. His ears perked right up. I was very happy to see him. About two hours after we arrived we had already started shopping. It was just like I had remembered. That night we had supper then went to bed. I remember that first night getting up at two AM to lunge, ride and do showmanship. We went back to bed at five AM. I remember doing that every night until I was done showing. My first class was showmanship. I was in split five out of six. I was very positive about my pattern. I walked in the ring I set up at the pylon ready for the judges. A couple of seconds later Cooper started dancing around so I walked him in a little circle. I then set him up again. Cooper stood for another couple of seconds and then started again. I walked him around some more. By the time I got back to the pylon the judges were ready. I was now unable to set up. My next class at the Congress were for the NYATT. First was showmanship at seven AM. I had gotten up at two AM to ride and did not get to go back to bed till the next night. My pattern was in the cooper arena it was so small in there. Next was my hunter under saddle class I had a really good ride the best trot I ever had. Some of my transitions weren’t great and he threw his head up so I did not make my split. But Shandi said that its ok we will kick their butt in the novice youth 13 and under hunter under saddle. That night we had the NYATT ceremony in the coliseum. It was really cool but it was going on while Shandi was showing Cooper in the Green hunter under saddle. Once she was done she said Cooper was the best he ever was for her. While we were at the NYATT ceremony we got lots of stuff including a belt buckle. A few days later it was my next and final class at the Congress. I was in the overhang warming up to get ready to check in. I was walking in the tent getting ready to trot in. There were so many of us in there. They then asked us to trot in. I wanted to try to be about the ninth one to trot in so I would get a good spot on the quarter line. I ended up nearly last though. Oh well, by the time I knew it they were getting ready to call the numbers of the finalists. They called the first number then they called my number. Number 6606. Everyone that was there to watch me started screaming. We walked out of the pen and everyone was crying. Shandi told me to forget about making the finals and focus on having another good ride. I trotted in the pen again better than I ever have. We had one bobble to the right and then the class was over. It went by so fast and then they started announcing the placing’s. I had placed fifth under one judge and sixth under Oct-Nov-Dec 2011 Newsletter Page 17 of 42 another. Since I only placed under two judges we only expect possibly tenth. They placed tenth, ninth, eighth, then seventh and finally sixth they announced my number; 6606. Mikayla Jamieson with Ahoy Chocolate Zip from Moncton, New Brunswick. I walked up to get my medal and the Congress Queen said to me congratulations. I was so happy, excited, proud, so many feelings. Everyone was so happy. And by the end of the day we were celebrating with deep fried Oreos! Mikayla Jamieson Thank you Spruce Hollow Corral For everyone’s help and support during the 2011 show season. A very special thank you to Shandi Mitton for all your guidance, hard work and dedication. It is greatly appreciated! Mikayla Jamieson, 6th Place Overall HUS 13 & Under 2011 Congress Oct-Nov-Dec 2011 Newsletter Page 18 of 42 Well in the amateur western pleasure I got 4th in nasba and aqha. Was a hard road, in the non pro limited my horse was scared out of his mind, we had a bad ride and I was about to call it done! Was gonna go home. Jeff and my family talked me into goin in amateur. Against my wishes. Jeff has always believed in me and Bart as a team and he was right. 7146 was my number. I was in 4th split of 6. When my number was called into finals , I was beyond excited thinking I've reached my goals ( haven't had the best experiences at congress, ripped pants, wrong leads etc. If it could happen it would there ) then Jeff gave me a little lesson before finals, told me to stay quiet and off I went. Going around that pen there was no stress. I didn't think of coming out with anything more than finalist. When they called the numbers I was ecstatic! 8th , 2nd, 5th and 9th. Couldn't believe I had just made all 4 judges cards. When they were calling final places I thought I had gotten every placing before. 9th - I got ready.. Nop not me. 8th- started collecting bart.. Nop not me... Then 4th came and I got called. My eyes started to water but I couldn't cry! Hahaha, I needed to lope to queen. My horse was so tired he barely made it! Hahaha but I got my medal , was greeted by Jeff Temple at the gate with all the friends who helped me get ready ( Amy Smith, Cait Putnam, Melanie Haiss ) it was a great night! I have never been so excited. Coulda peed my pants. Hahaha. Great congress experience and cannot wait for next year.
