Rules and Regulations Ori Tahiti – Soloist Division Soloist Classification: Tamaroa – Boy Tane – Man Tamahine – Girl Vahine – Woman Age Divisions: Junior Division: (Tamaroa/Tamahine) 4-6 7-9 10-12 Senior Division (Tane/Vahine) 13-15 16-18 19-24 25-30 31-34 35+ Minimum: 1 minute Time Limits: Maximum: 2 minutes Skill Category: Contestants will compete in one (1) of three (3) skill categories as follows: Category A Beginner/Intermediate A Dancer (Soloists in this catergory must have never been awarded 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in an ori solo competition.) • NO ori (solo) competition experience • (5) years or less, of ori (solo) competition experience but has not made it to finals • (5) years or less of ori (solo) competition experience making it to finals no more than 2 times but has not placed. Category B Intermediate B/Advanced Dancer • More than (5) years of Ori (solo) competition experience making it to finals 3 or more times within the past 5 years but has not placed • More than (5) years of Ori (solo) competition experience making it to finals 3 or more times within the past 5 years and placed Category C Heiva Ma’ohi Grand Champion (Professional Invitational Only – Ages 13 & up) (1 Vahine & 1 Tane from each pupu ori/halau/dance group can be chosen to represent their organization) • Performance has been rated as professional within the past 5 years • Awarded a 1st Place or Most Outstanding dancer 3 or more time within the past 5 years. 1) Preliminary Elimination Round: Soloists will dance to a combination of basic Tahitian pehe played by our Heiva Ma’ohi house drummers. These pehe will include but is not limited to: Pahae, Paea, Bora Bora and Takoto. Dance time will be a minimum of 1 minute to a maximum of 2 minutes. Soloists should be able to interpret the impromptu pehe (drum beat) during the preliminary round. 2) Solo Finalist Round: Soloists will dance to a combination of their own pehe played by their pupu ori/halau/dance group drummers. Dance time will be a minimum of 1 minute to a maximum of 2 minutes. Soloists will submit a brief description of the theme/story they will present after all solo finalists have been announced. Solo finalists should be able to choreograph a themed routine. 3) Soloists will be judged on the following: • Technique (25 points): Entrance, exit, ability to execute various traditional steps • Precision (25 points): Timing, accuracy in conjunction with pehe (drum beat) • Energy & Stamina (20 points): Endurance for duration of solo • Expression & Stage Presence (15 points): Confidence, grace, expression, ease and comfort • Costume & Interpretation (15 points): Creativity, theme, character, quality and use of natural materials NOTE: Soloists should be able to demonstrate proficiency in at least 5 traditional dance steps. For example: Vahine: Fa’arapu, Tama’u, Afata, Varu, Fa’arapu Eraro Tane: Paoti, Tue, Fa’arapu, Taparuru, Paoti Eraro 4) Costumes: Scores will be based on creative use of materials, undergarments must not show. Tamahine/Vahine: • Pareo, any type of fabric • Pareo must not be more than 2 inches above the top of the knees. • Pareo tie must not be longer than the length of the pareo. • Hand held objects are not permitted • Thong or G-string is not permitted • Pareo rolling and hip adornments are permitted in the finalist round • Head hei and Lei must be worn to compliment the pareo and theme • Head hei must not extend further than 1 ft. high or w ft. wide in the preliminary round • Large head hei are permitted in the finalist round Tamaroa/Tane: • Maro or Tihere, any type of fabric • Leg and arm adornments (Ti-leaves or Mor’e) must not be more than 1 inch below the bottom of the calves. • Hand held objects are not permitted • Head hei and Lei must be worn to compliment the maro/tihere and theme • Head hei must not extend further than 1 ft. high or 1 ft. wide in the preliminary round • Head hei more than 1 ft. high or 1 ft. wide are permitted in the finalist round NOTE: Natural materials include, but are not limited to the following: Feathers, shells, tapa, tree bark, flower, ferns, niau blanc, and other greens 5) Dance offs: will be determined upon a tie of total points earned for each age category. Soloists will dance to a combination of basic Tahitian pehe played by our Heiva Ma’ohi house drummers. Dance off will commence no more than one age category after initial preliminary or solo. Soloist must stay in costume until an announcement is made that there will be no dance off for the specific age category. Dance time will be a minimum of 1 minute to a maximum of 2 minutes. 6) Overall Ori Tahiti Round: There will be one Overall winner chosen from the Senior Division (Vahine/Tane). All 1st place winners from the Category B (Intermediate B/Advanced Dancer) will compete for the Overall Title. There will be two sections in this round. • Each soloist will perform their themed solo. • Soloist, collectively, will dance to impromptu pehe (drum beat) for up to 2 minutes. 7) Heiva Ma’ohi Grand Champion Round: (Professional Invitational/ Category C) There will be one Vahine and one Tane that will be chosen by their pupu ori/halau/dance group to represent their organization. The soloist chosen must be at least 13 years old (Senior Division). There will be 3 sections in this round. 8) Awards: Senior Division 1st place winners will have the opportunity to opt for the Maeva Goo Scholarship. Scholarship awards will be paid directly to the university college or trade school of choice. • Junior Division - 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners will each receive a trophy and cash award • Senior Division - 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners will each receive a trophy and cash award. • Heiva Ma’ohi Sacramento Overall Award: Skill category B/ Senior Division /1st place winner’s only - Heiva Ma’ohi Sacramento Overall Trophy, cash OR Maeva Goo Scholarship (Overall award only for top scoring Vahine and Tane), automatic registration into the Heiva Ma’ohi California Grand Champion the following year. • Heiva Ma’ohi California Grand Champion Award: Skill category C (Invitational Only) –“Heiva Ma’ohi California Grand Champion Trophy and cash award OR Maeva Goo Scholarship (California Grand Champion award for top scoring Vahine and Tane) • Heiva Ma’ohi California Grand Champion, Heiva Ma’ohi Sacramento Overall winners, and 1st Place winners for all skill categories/age divisions will showcase their award winning solo at the 2012 Aloha Festival in Sacramento, California in October 2012. • Tamari’i – exhibition dancers ages 1-4 will receive a special gift for sharing their talent. Heiva Ma’ohi Grand Champion Round: (Professional Invitational/ Category C) There will be one Vahine and one Tane that will be chosen by their pupu ori/halau/dance group to represent their organization. The soloist chosen must be at least 13 years old (Senior Division). There will be 3 sections in this round. Section #1: Soloists will dance to a combination of Tahitian pehe played by our Heiva Ma’ohi house drummers. Dance time will be a minimum of 1 minute to a maximum of 2 minutes. Soloists should be able to interpret the impromptu pehe (drum beat) with traditional dance movements during this section. Costume requirements: • Single layer mor’e skirt must be worn. • Artificial or synthetic mor’e skirt will not be allowed • Vahine must wear ankle length mor’e skirt. Tane must wear knee length mor’e skirt. • Mor’e skirt may be natural color, white or color dyed. • Mor’e skirt bands must be plain without adornments and not more than 3” wide. • No attached or detachable hip adornments; no hanging tassels or fringe including auti or other foliage allowed. • Leg adornments made of hanging more, raffia, auti or other foliage will not be allowed, however single braided/stripped auti (ti-leaf ) will be permitted. • Head hei (Hei Po’o)and Lei, is traditional, and must be worn to compliment the mor’e • Head hei must not extend further than 1 ft. high or 1 ft. wide • Head hei more than 1 ft. high or 1 ft. wide are permitted in the finalist round • Head Hei may be made of fresh flowers, greenery, shells, fara(lauhala) or more. • No plastic, silk or dried greenery/flowers allowed; no synthetic materials; no hot glue. • A single ti-leaf or small cluster of greenery/flowers will NOT be considered appropriate head hei. Vahine should wear head hei around head or from ear-to-ear. Section #2: Soloists will dance to a combination of Tahitian pehe played by our Heiva Ma’ohi house drummers. Dance time will be a minimum of 1.5 minute to a maximum of 2.5 minutes. Soloists should be able to interpret the impromptu pehe (drum beat) with traditional dance movements during this section. Costume requirements: • Pareo/Maro/Tihere, any type of fabric. • Pareo tie must not be longer than the length of the pareo. • Fringed pareu is not allowed. • Pareo must not be rolled in this round. • Pareo must not be worn more than 2” above the top of the knees. • • • • • • • • No attached or detachable hip hei or hip adornments allowed; no hanging tassels or fringe including auti or any other foliage.
