Reading Eggspress is designed to build reading and comprehension skills for your 2nd - 6th graders. Reading Eggspress has an enormous range of learning resources, lessons, motivational games, e-books, and reporting that together create a unique learning environment. To ensure that you get the most out of Reading Eggspress, we have created this Teacher Guide, which includes some simple steps for you to follow. Contents 1. Getting Started3 2. Student Reports5 3. Subscription Coordinator Tool 22 10. Purchasing a Subscription 28 1. How to Get Started First, you will need to register on the Reading Eggs website. For this you will need your state and school name. Teachers in your school register their own class individually, using this state and school information. Please call us at 877.394.6695 if you have any questions. A. Registration To get started, simply follow these four simple steps: 1. Click the link in the welcome email your school received to register as a member of your school’s Reading Eggs subscription. 2. Enter and submit your information in the registration form. Please be sure to select the correct state and school because you and your students will be associated with the building you choose. 3. Please confirm your information and create your unique password. 4. You can now begin adding and editing student information. B. Teacher Navigation Menu Once you are logged into your account (log in by entering your login name and password), you will arrive at the My Account page. From here you can access all the teacher features of Reading Eggspress and Reading Eggs. Edit My Details Change your details, like email and password, and receive Reading Eggs emails. Manage Students Add and edit students’ details, including assigning students to the appropriate reading lessons. Parent Letter Download student login details to get your students using the program from home. Start Reading Start students reading in Reading Eggs or Reading Eggspress. Preview Lessons Preview all lessons. You can also download lesson plans and student worksheets for each lesson. Subscription Coordinator Manage students and teachers for your entire school, or modify your school subscription. Teacher Toolkit This section provides you with a range of resources that can be used on an interactive whiteboard. The resources include activities, big books, student worksheets, lesson plans, and much more! Lessons Overview Gives you detail on the content of the lessons. Research Reports View a detailed review of the research that Teacher User Guide supports the View and download a program. copy of this guide. Student Stats See your students’ progress. Brochures / Order Form Download teacher and parent brochures. 3 C. Set Up Your Class Once you have registered, add your students. To add to your class, follow these simple steps: 1. Ensure you are on the My Account page. You can also import a list of students if you want to add an entire class. 2. Click on Manage Students. Tip: Add a demo student to your list for front of class demonstrations. 3. Click on Add and Edit Your Students. 4. Enter the student’s first and last names. 5. Click on Add this student. This student is now saved to your class list. D. Start Students’ Reading Eggspress Journey To get your students working through the lessons: 1. Click on Start Reading Eggspress from the My Account page. 2. Choose a student from the My Class page by clicking on an avatar. Once on the My Class page, students cannot move back to your Teacher account. If you need to move back to the My Account page, enter your login and password at the bottom of the My Class page. You can use your teacher login on multiple computers in your school. You can also provide students with their own login details. See page 7 for more information. 3. Clicking on an avatar will take you to the floating island. From here, students can choose to enter the Reading Eggspress Library, Comprehension Gym, Stadium, Mall or Apartment. 4. To finish the Reading Eggspress lessons, click on log out at the top right of the student’s navigation screen. This will take the student back to the My Class page. Another student can now have a turn. 4 Tip: The “Start Reading” feature is best used with students under direct supervision by the teacher. For security purposes, we strongly encourage students to log into a computer with their own login names and passwords On the first visit to the Comprehension Gym, students will be asked to complete a placement test. The placement test will automatically assign your student to the appropriate level of the Comprehension Gym lessons. You can have a student redo the placement test at any time when you edit a student and select the redo placement test option. 2. Student Reports A. Class Progress Reports As a registered teacher, you have access to results from students in your class. You can see how many lessons students have completed, how many books have been read and the results of their quizzes. To access your students’ Comprehension Lessons, Library, and Stadium progress: 1. Go to the My Account page. 2. Click on the Student Stats icon. 3. T his is a brief overview of each student’s Reading Eggspress progress. B. Individual Student Reports 1. For detailed reports about each student, click on the student name from the Class Progress Overview. This shows a detailed report of the student’s Comprehension, Library, and Stadium progress. 5 3. Managing Student Accounts A. Editing Students There may be times when you will be required to modify a student’s account. You can easily change the student’s name or move the student forward to access more challenging reading, spelling and comprehension lessons. To edit a student’s account, simply follow these steps: 1. From the My Account page click on Manage Students. 2. Click on Add and Edit Your Students. 3. Y ou can edit names and open (or close) lessons for students. If students are stuck on a lesson, you can move them on. Search by the students’ names or find them in the student list. Click on the Edit Student button. 4. You can adjust students’ lesson progress by moving them to different lessons, or by having them redo the placement test. Click Save when you make changes. You can also edit all students at the same time if you want your class on the same lesson or to set a class password. Click on Edit All Students from the Add and Edit Your Students menu. 6 B. Student Login Details To provide students with their own login details, simply follow these steps: 1. From the My Account page click on Manage Students. 2. Click on Individual Student Login Detail.s When you click on this button from your Manage Students option, you will automatically download a PDF of all your students’ individual logins and passwords. You can cut these out and laminate them for the students in your class. This option allows students to log in without teacher supervision. C. Moving Students You can remove students from your class and set up new classes. To move or transfer a student’s account, simply follow these steps: 1. From the My Account page click on Manage Students. 2. Click on Move Student to Different Classes. 3. From the My Class box, select the students you would like to remove from your class. Click on the arrow pointing to the School Admin box to move students. Note: Students that are transferred to School Admin will automatically be removed from your class and deactivated. The student will remain inactive and unassigned to a class until another teacher adds them to his or her class from the School Admin box. Student data is saved to the school profile even if they are inactive and unassigned to a class. 4. F rom the School Admin box, select the students you would like to add to your class. Click on the arrow pointing to the My Class box to move students. Your new class has automatically been saved. 7 4. Student Navigation Menu The student navigation menu shows the places students can visit within Reading Eggspress. Reading Eggspress keeps students motivated by rewarding them along their journey. Students can see which lessons have been completed, how many targets they have hit, and check how many golden eggs they have earned. A. Floating Island When a student logs into Reading Eggspress, they land on the floating island. From here they can go to all their Reading Eggspress destinations. Reading Eggspress is divided into 4 areas – Learning, Fun, Live Competition, and Rewards. The floating island is divided into four quadrants with arrows on each edge. Click on the arrow to spin the map around to the next quadrant. The map’s default position is the Learning Quadrant, called Comprehension Gym. The Library The library includes more than 650 e-books including illustrated chapter books, full color nonfiction books, and a range of classics. The Library includes a wide range of leveled fiction and nonfiction titles with an online reading quiz included with each title. 8 The Comprehension Gym The Comprehension Gym includes 240 interactive comprehension lessons over five broad levels from grade 2 to grade 6. Each Comprehension Gym lesson includes prereading activities, a reading passage sourced from a wide selection of fiction and nonfiction texts, followed by a set of comprehension questions that assess a student’s factual, inferential, and textual understandings of the text. The Stadium Students compete in real time against other players from around the world or against the computer. The exciting head-to-head contest tests skills in one of four areas – spelling, vocabulary, usage, and grammar. B. Motivational Elements Reading Eggspress is a highly motivating world for students to explore. They can earn a variety of rewards including: • • • • Golden Eggs Trading Cards Games Personalized Avatars Trading Cards • Six Realms of trading cards for children to collect and trade. Fantastica Starstruck Avatar, Apartment, and Mall • At the mall, students can use golden eggs to buy avatar clothes and apartment furniture. Quote Quest • This 100 level game is a quest-style game where students search and find words that make up a quote from famous children’s books. 5. Accessing Reading Eggspress from Home Children love the Reading Eggspress lessons and benefit from repeating lessons and exploring the site. To get more time ontask, and to get the most out of Reading Eggspress, it is great to encourage students to use the program at home. It is also an excellent home-school link that gets parents actively involved in their child’s education. To advise parents on how to view their child’s progress from home, simply follow these steps: 1. Ensure you are on the My Account page. 2. Click on Parent Letter. 3. Print this document and hand it out to parents. 9 6. Program Features A. Comprehension Gym • The Comprehension Gym includes 200 interactive comprehension lessons. The built-in placement test places students at the appropriate level. • • Enter the gym and receive a personal welcome. • Students can choose any of the 10 lessons to work through, but must complete all lessons to progress to the next level. • Each Comprehension Gym lesson includes pre-reading activities that model and teach comprehension strategies, a reading passage followed by a set of comprehension questions that assess a student’s factual, inferential, and textual understandings of the text. • Each of the 16 questions in the end of lesson quiz assesses a specific comprehension skill or strategy. Detailed reports provide teachers with information about each student’s progress. • The Reading Eggspress Library has more than 650 e-books, including illustrated chapter books, full color nonfiction books, and a range of classics. Students can search for books by topic, series, author, reading age, or book title. Each level has 10 lessons with five fiction and five nonfiction extracts from a broad range of leveled books. B. Library 10 • The Library includes a wide range of leveled fiction and nonfiction titles with an online reading quiz included for each title. Students can ‘fave,’ bookmark, and rate each book. When students first choose a book, they will see the number of people who have read it and its average rating according to their peers. • Teachers can see how many books students have read, date read, type of book, word length, and quiz scores. The totals provide an excellent overview of student progress. 6. Program Features C. Subscription Coordinator Tool The Subscription Coordinator tool is a simple way to ensure the organization of your school’s teacher and student information. This tool allows you to assign one teacher to be the dedicated Subscription Coordinator. The Subscription Coordinator can: • View, edit, and delete all teacher accounts • Invite teachers to join your school’s subscription • View, edit, add, delete, and deactivate all student accounts • Move students to different classes • View class and student progress reports • Print student login and password details • Reset student passwords individually and for a whole class A. Setting up a Subscription Coordinator To access the Subscription Coordinator tool, you will need to ensure you have an existing teacher account on Reading Eggspress. Log in to your account as normal and click on Subscription Coordinator from the left hand menu of your My Account page. You will be prompted with one of two messages: New Subscription Coordinator When there is no set Subscription Coordinator, a message will appear asking if you would like to be the Subscription Coordinator. If you would like to be the Subscription Coordinator, click Make Me the Subscription Coordinator. You will then be prompted to submit your “Subscription Coordinator Code” provided in your Reading Eggs Welcome Letter. If you did not receive a welcome letter, please call us at 877.394.6695. Or Existing Subscription Coordinator If your school already has a Subscription Coordinator you will not have access to proceed. It will inform you of the Subscription Coordinator for your school. 22 B. Subscription Coordinator Menu The Subscription Coordinator has access to the following menu items: This icon idicates that you are operating in Subscription Coordinator mode. View class and student progress reports. Add and edit details, change passwords, and edit the progress of students from your school. View, edit, and delete details of your school’s teachers. Invite teachers to join or request a change to your school’s subscription. C. Manage Your School’s Students 1. Click on Manage Students from the Subscription Coordinator Menu. Add and edit your students or move students to different classes. Manage your students’ accounts. Move students from one class to another. 23 D. Adding and Editing Students Add a student, edit a student individually or as a group, and reset student passwords. ADD – To add a new student fill in the form and click on Add this student. EDIT A STUDENT – To edit an individual student, click on Existing Students and select the student from the list, or search by filling in the student’s last name and teacher. EDIT ALL STUDENTS – You can delete students and change students’ level progress. This can be done for a group of students or for all students at your school. From here you can delete the student, change the student level progress, and change the student’s password. SET STUDENT PASSWORDS – By clicking on Set Student Passwords, you can set a password for the entire class of any teacher in your school. 24 E. Moving Students to Different Classes You can set up new classes and transfer students to other teachers through the Move Students To Different Classes option. To move or transfer a student’s account, simply follow these steps: 1. Select the teacher’s class you wish to view, then click on Change view. 2. Select the student on the left hand menu and then click on the arrow pointing to School Admin on the right hand menu to move them out of the class. Note: At the end of the year, you can move all students into the School Admin account. Note: Students who are transferred to the School Admin account will automatically be removed from a class and deactivated, to ensure you stay under your subscription limit. Only active students count towards your subscription capacity. The student will remain inactive and unassigned to a class until added to another class from the School Admin box. Student data is saved to the school profile even if they are inactive and unassigned to a class. 3. To move students out of School Admin and into a class, select the students you wish to move from the School Admin menu and click on the arrow pointing to the class. The new class will be saved automatically. 25 F. Student Reports This section provides an overview of your school’s student statistics. It shows how many lessons each student has completed as well as their lesson progress. You can print reports. Click on a student’s name to see more detail. This also allows you to compare your students’ progress at a glance. More detailed reports for each student can be viewed and printed at the bottom of the screen. 26 G. Manage Teachers You can edit teachers’ login details, names, email addresses, and passwords. To view and edit teachers, click on Manage Teachers from the Subscription Coordinator Menu. You can also invite a teacher to join your school’s subscription from here. To view a teacher, click Show next to the teacher’s name in the list. It will show you more details as well as the teacher’s students’ details. To edit a teacher, click on Edit this Teacher. From here you can change their details; click on Update Teacher to save. To invite a teacher to join your subscription fill in a teacher’s details, click Submit, and the teacher will be sent an email with instructions on how to join. 27 H. Manage Subscriptions View your current subscription and when it is due to expire. Find out how many active students you have, and your student limit for your subscription. You can also request to extend or upgrade your subscription. Invite new teachers to join, which will send them an email with instructions. 12.
