Note From the Editor
S
ay what you want but I like Texas weather
- for the most part. The summer heat I can do
without but winter in North Texas has become a
mixed bag of Northeast U.S. winter storms and
Southwest, California-style breezy afternoons.
You never know what you’ll get when you walk
out your front door in the morning and there’s
something to be said about that – surprises,
even weather related surprises, can be the
spice of life.
Unpredictable weather means that here, at the
end of February, it’s still cold – but not so cold
that you can’t get out and start enjoying the
activities that Spring will bring. It’s cold enough
that you can still enjoy a warm bowl of menudo
or caldo de res but warm enough that you can
venture out to find a new restaurant or finally
organize that happy hour you’ve been meaning
to arrange. Cold enough to still wear jackets
but warm enough that baseball is just around
the corner. Cold enough for a “night in” but
warm enough for a night out.
With this issue of Mercado Bilingüe, we wanted
to start that transition from winter to spring;
to start peeking into all the things we put off
until warmer weather. Things like concerts.
As you saw from our cover, music is on our
mind, particularly because South By Southwest
in Austin is rapidly approaching. Last fall I
had the opportunity to sit down with Cristian
Machado, the lead singer of Ill Niño, before he
went on stage at Trees in Deep Ellum. Ill Niño
is a metal band from New Jersey but we quickly
found common ground in our shared passion
of injecting our cultural heritage in our work.
Even if you’re not a fan of heavy metal music,
Cristian and Ill Niño’s story is a great example of
the American dream realized.
I’m also excited to bring you the
first “Social Latino” feature of
2014 in Mercado Bilingüe. We
were stoked last year when we
partnered with Social Latino and
it’s been our pleasure to bring you
photos of their Mix.Mingle.Move
events. Remember that warmer
weather I was talking about? Use
that nice climate to get out to
one of these monthly networking
events and make some connects
with fellow Latino professionals.
Take it from me, their events are
always accessible and lots of fun.
I mentioned food and its relation to
weather. Since we’re all venturing
out from hibernation now that
the chill is subsiding, check out
Elizabeth Barriga’s review of
“Bigotes”, a tex-mex restaurant in
Arlington, on page 26. After you
visit the restaurant for yourself and you will want to after reading
the review - you may have the need
to work off the calories. We have
you covered: on page 10, Robert Leal shows you
new ways to bring your workout routine into the
digital age. Speaking of outdoor activities, this
issue also includes a new Somos Metroplex,
a behind-the-scenes look at the online video
segment produced by Univision. If you’re a fan
of downtown Dallas adventuring you’ll want to
make sure to read Somos Metroplex host Sonia
Salas’s article on page 7.
Lastly, I want to invite you to send us your ideas,
pictures, videos showing how you are transitioning from winter to spring. Feel free to email
me at [email protected], tweet us
@mercadobilingue or find us on Facebook.
Mark Quevedo
A special shout out goes to my primo Mark
Quevedo who gave us the idea to feature
Ill Niño in this issue – he’s the suave Latino
pictured on this page. Sharing musical tastes is
something that’s always done within my family
and I hope it something you get the opportunity
to do within yours.
Stay bilingüe, friends.

ometimes life can get so hectic. We
become submerged in our daily routines
that we forget to notice the little things.
Every once in a while it’s good to stop, take
a moment and explore the beauty and art
that surrounds us.
We are often divided by walls, buildings,
borders, but when we are willing to explore,
we can discover some of the most extraordinary things in life.
Every day, I drive through the beautiful
city of downtown Dallas- Olive Street to
be exact- and in almost 2 years of working
in this city, I had never noticed that right
behind a 10 ft. brick wall there stood one of
the greatest museums of the 21st century,
the Nasher Sculpture Center.
In our most recent episode of Somos
Metroplex, we visit the heart of the Dallas
Arts District and bring you closer to a
place where each and every sculpture has
been inspired by love. Inspired, by earth,
adventure, discovery, and most importantly
love itself.
The Nasher Sculpture Center opened
its doors to the public in 2003 thanks to
founder Raymond Nasher, and since then,
it has been the home to modern and
contemporary art from all
over the world.
The late Raymond Nasher began collecting
pre-Colombian art during the 1950’s on his
visits to Mexico during the holidays. Since
then, the Nasher Sculpture collections have
expanded tremendously. For example, how
many of us have been to North Park Mall?
Shopping is my weakness so yes, I have.
If you have, you’ve probably walked by
pieces like “20 Elements” by Joel Shapiro;
a 20 piece wooden structure of bright
green, blue, red and yellow blocks; or the
“AD ASTRA” by Mark Di Suvero; a 48 ft. tall
structure made of red, industrial beams
bolted together. These pieces are all part of
the Nasher collection.
Connect with us at Somos Metroplex,
and get a closer look at what the Nasher
Sculpture Center has to offer. Discover
the beauty and treasures found in the city
of Dallas.

Metal meets Cultura: Ill Niño by Phillip Morales
I
t was easy to remember the glory days
of Deep Ellum as Christian Machado, the
lead singer of the New Jersey metal band
Ill Niño, approached me on the sidewalk
in front of Trees last October. With long
dreadlocks, piercings, and a black t-shirt,
Machado’s entire style screamed Deep
Ellum and although he may not have
known it, he would have fit perfectly into
the Deep Ellum neighborhood of the 80s
and 90s. It was 2013, however, and Ill
Niño was visiting Dallas, touring on the
heels of their latest album, Epidemia.
After taking some time to talk with
Machado about his Venezuelan roots and
his ability to mix his Latino heritage into his music, it’s clear that Ill
Niño and Machado fit perfectly in any era because they embody
the American Dream.
“I was born in Brazil, but I grew up in Venezuela until I was 12 years
old,” recalls Machado. “I remember the first time of ever experiencing what rock and roll was supposed to be, it was just a visual. I
walked into a Venezuelan supermarket and they had Van Halen, the
1984 album, on the wall. I must have been 8 or 9 but it really struck
a chord with me. I remember saying, ‘What the hell was that’. I
didn’t even really get to listen to [the Van Halen album] until maybe
8 years later when I was already in America.”
Machado would later make his way to the musically influential streets
of New York City but for much of his life, he only caught snippets
of rock & roll and heavy metal through Venezuelan television.
He remembers catching a live Kiss performance on Venezuelan
television
when
he was young and
only learning of
Metal music when
he moved to New
Jersey.
“There wasn’t an
outlet for rock,
Christian Machado
hard rock or metal
music in Venezuela,”
Machado said. “When I came to the U.S., there was some European
family. My grandmother was from Europe, so her cousin came to
visit and he was a huge Iron Maiden fan. He turned me on to my
first Iron Maiden record ever, which was their album “Killers”. Once
I listened to Iron Maiden, I was hooked – that was my first actual
love for music.”
1 3
More than just a fan, Machado did what any
good musician does – he studied the art.
When it came to Iron Maiden, he noticed
their writing style was “very classical” and
listened closely for the band’s “chord progressions”. Together with his friend Dave
Chavarri, Machado took his passion for
music and formed the first iteration of Ill
Niño – then called El Niño – in 1998. The
initial line-up included Jorge Rosado on
lead vocals, Marc Rizzo on guitar, Machado
on bass, and Chavarri on drums.
“When we put the band together, Dave
and I, we were just influenced by the Latino
cultural in general,” recalls Machado. “We
just wanted to do something that was
real. We didn’t want to attempt to not
personalize our music and to us it was a
chance to do something
that was original.”
For Ill Niño, “being
original” meant creating
music that had no
cultural
boundaries,
that moved seamlessly
between
Latino
influenced styles and
that wasn’t afraid to
go bilingual.
After
creating a Pantera
tribute song with a

flamenco solo taking the place of a famous
guitar solo, the band knew they had found
their sound. Soon after, Ill Niño’s debut
album release, “Revolution Revolución”,
had hits like “I am Loco”, “Rumba” and
“I’m living the
American dream.”
“Revolución” – true Metal songs that not
only had Spanish interjected into the lyrics
but that genuinely sounded original when
compared to other Metal being created at
the time.
The band didn’t fall prey to the typical
trappings of “Latino” musical acts who
alternate between English and Spanish
tracks – Ill Niño took their bilingual, dualcultural lifestyle and wrote music from that
uniquely American viewpoint.
“I think it would too pretentious to just put
out one Spanish song or one English song.
We are Latino-Americans, if we don’t make
every song Latin American then we‘re not
really getting to the point of who we are and
making our music “us”. And that’s what’s
really important to us, as long as we stay
focused on our culture, where we come
from, just personalizing our music is what’s
really important to us,” said Machado.
Not only lyrically but rhythmically, Ill Niño’s
music is brimming with South American
influences.
Afo-Cuban beats, Spanish
guitar rifts, South American undertones
and flamenco solos are spread throughout
Ill Niño’s catalog of albums. This diverse

mixture of varying sounds comes from
a wide range of musical influences that
include everyone from Prince to Bruce
Springsteen to Pantera to Santana. What
results from this swath of inspiration is a
sound that’s just hard enough to be gritty
Metal but soft enough to become highly
enjoyable rock & roll. Ill Niño’s music is
“Nu-metal” to say the least but a better
description may be “newer Nu-Metal”.
“We have a lot of Caribbean undertones in
our break downs and things like that. We
have a lot of tribal element in our music too.
I mean just look at our culture – Latinos are
diverse. The diversity in our culture is what
makes it interesting,” said Machado.
Machado has since take over lead vocal
duties in Ill Niño and on stage he brings
a towering presence that immediately
-

becomes surreal when he belts out
emotional lyrics from tracks like “La
Liberación of Our Awakening”, “Estoy
Perdido” and “Corazón of
Mine” (a personal favorite of
Machados’). The band has
also gone through several
members throughout the
2000s but Machado and
Chavarri still remain the core
of a group that Machado
says are “friends first and
musicians second”.
In 2012, Ill Niño released
their sixth studio album,
through Victory Records,
called Epidemia.
The
band produced the album
themselves and find a joy in
being free from the creative
restraints of attaching
themselves to a record
label. They have used this
independent spirit to form
avenues for other up-andcoming bands to develop
their own music by building
a studio in New Jersey
that offers musicians an
affordable place to create.
Ill Niño even fosters growth right here
in Dallas by producing local Heavy Metal
band Serosia, who recently went on tour
with Sevendust.
“Just be true to yourself and you’ll be
original” is the advice Machado gives to
new artists looking to make a career as
musicians.
For Ill Niño, Machado says
the focuses is to continue to make ground
breaking music for one very important
group: the fans.
“I think our fans connect with the fact that
we are Latino Americans who take a lot of
pride in this awesome country that we live
in,” said Machado, who credits his entire
musical career to his grandmother’s choice
of bringing him from Venezuela to the U.S
all those years ago.
“I’m living the American dream.”
You can find and purchase Ill Niño’s music

Wearable Digital Fitness
by Robert Leal
F
or those looking to lose a few pounds or keep in better shape,
a personal fitness tracker might be a good choice. Although these
types of devices started as nothing more than a digital pedometer,
the choices and features have expanded so much in the past couple
of years. Nowadays personal fitness trackers can track how many
steps you’ve moved, monitor important vitals and compile this
information together with a smartphone app. These devices can
give you an overall picture of your current health and how you are
doing toward accomplishing your fitness goals.
Basis B1 Band - $199.00 www.mybasis.com
This is one of the most interesting fitness trackers recently released.
It goes beyond tracking how many steps you’ve taken and moves
into actually monitoring heart rate, skin temperature and perspiration. All these different monitoring points cumulate into a more
accurate depiction of your
everyday life. Visually, the
Basis B1 looks like a sports
watch, with an all black
body, polyurethane straps
and a small lcd screen on
top. Minimalistic but to the
point, it isn’t going to win any
beauty contests but it will get
straight to telling you exactly
how you are doing toward
your fitness goals.
It connects wirelessly via bluetooth to a smartphone or by manually
plugging into a USB charging port, uploading all your information to
the Basis website. It is through the website that the band really
starts to shine. Geared toward showcasing the big picture, it moves
way beyond telling you how many steps you’ve taken but also how
well you are accomplishing your fitness goals. From the minute you
take it out of the box, the Basis B1 is constantly challenging you. So
you’ve walked 8,000 steps today? Why not try for 9,000 tomorrow?
Of course, this is just one example. There are different challenges
such as getting more sleep at night and wearing the band all day for a
week. These small but important challenges are what push you and
keep you motivated to actually make a difference in your personal
fitness. The B1 is really the best of the best for the wristband fitness
monitors and although it can be expensive it’s well worth the cost
when you consider the multitude of features it brings to the table.
Fitbit Force - $129.95 www.fitbit.com/force
Fitbit has been in the wearable fitness tech industry for quite a while
now, and they have gotten very good at it. It’s newest device, the
Fitbit Force, is no exception. This is a well-developed and constructed
device that has much to offer in terms of usability. Coming in two
colors, black or slate, and made of a slightly rubberized plastic it looks

that the Force does not measure these

to record them on your own and integrating

things that you wouldn’t normally think of
checking that can give you a quick, much
appreciated update.

Jawbone Up24
- $149.99
www.jawbone.com/up
The Jawbone Up24 may look
like just a wearable band, but
it is so much more than that.
The wristband comes in two
colors (black and orange) and looks a bit
like a rubberized bracelet. There isn’t an
LCD screen to get a direct readout, but
this doesn’t necessarily hinder its use. This
simple band worn on your wrist has the
capabilities to help you better understand
the way you move, sleep and eat. Syncing
wirelessly with your smartphone via
Bluetooth, the UP band tracks calories
you’ve burned, workouts you complete and
even records milestones such as walking 1
million steps and getting to bed by a certain
time in the evening.
The Up24 doesn’t have a web interface,
but they make up for this with a rather
well designed smartphone app. One of the
cool new features is the push notifications
that the device will send to your phone
when you are about to complete a goal.
For example, after waking up and switching
the device off of sleep mode, it will push a
notification to your phone telling you how
the “Today I will” and “Milestones” features.
“Today I will” lets you take things one day at
a time, like say setting the goal of drinking
8 glasses of water for the day. While the
“Milestones” tracks more long term goals
like walking 10 miles this month. Both are
a great bonus and can help to motivate you
to do more on a daily basis. Like most other
devices, it can track your sleep habits and
give you a summary of how well you actually
slept last night. Not only does it track your
sleep, but it also has a smart alarm function
that will vibrate during a user selected
window of time so that it wakes you up at
the most optimum time during your sleep
cycle. This is a cool feature and it really helps
to avoid waking up groggy. It also has the
added benefit of not waking up your partner
with this silent nudge. All these features
make the Jawbone Up24 device the most
desirable fitness tracker yet and with the
included Bluetooth it’s a no-brainer when
compared to the cheaper Jawbone Up.

Impala. La trompa posee un perfil bajo. Si bien he
rodean.
Ya mencioné el espacio
adicional para las piernas
que la carrocería alargada del
nuevo Impala otorga. Además
de esto, brinda suficiente
espacio en cuanto a la altura
a lo largo del automóvil.
Si planea llevar a cuatro
personas más, tenga en
cuenta que el vehículo posee
diez airbags. Ese es el consejo
sobre las características de
seguridad del nuevo Impala.
La advertencia de colisión
frontal, la advertencia de
abandono de carril y el
control de crucero adaptable
son algunas características
adicionales que ubican al

Mercado Bilingüe’s Road to the World Cup
E
very issue leading up the World Cup in
Brazil this summer, we’ll be bringing you a quick
look at each of the eight groups competing for
the trophy; that way you know who to root for.
This week, we take a look at:
Group C
URUGUAY
They finished fourth overall at South Africa in
2010 and since then have gone on to win their
Copa America, so it was safe to say that Uruguay
was a favorite to perform well in the qualifying
rounds for this year’s World Cup. However in
2012, while qualifying, Uruguay
got only 2 points out of a total
possible 18 points. La Celeste,
as the Uruguayan team is known
as, recovered their footing
and defeated Jordan in the
intercontinental play-offs to win a
chance to compete in Brazil.
Before the 1970s, Uruguay
was a soccer dynasty that was
considered one of the kings of the
World Cup. Uruguay first came
into World Cup glory in 1930
when they played host to the game and their
second came in 1930 when they defeated the
host county of Brazil. This stunning victory that
took place in Maracan would famously come
to be known as El Maracanazo.
Since then, Uruguay has only
made sporadic appearances at the
World Cup with their most recent
Cup being the 2002 Cup in Korea/
Japan where they left during the
group phase.
Key Players: Strikers Luis Suarez
and Adinson Cavani have become
the two pillars of the Uruguayan
soccer team for the past couple
of years. Diego Lugano directs
rearguard operations with ease
and vigor while goalie Fernando
Muslera protects the net like a
wall. Coach Oscar Washington
Tabarez will need to shuffle this
deck of experienced players in order to make
history again at this year’s Cup.
Falcao
Giorgos Karagounis
COSTA RICA
The land of “Puro Vida”, had a shot of life when
Colombian Jorge Luis Pinto recently joined Costa
Rica’s national team as head coach. Los Ticos,
as the team is known in Costa Rica, finished
second behind Mexico to advance to the final
six-team phase during qualifying rounds and
eventually finished second overall, behind the
United States.
Los Ticos made their first appearance at the
World Cup in 1990, going all the way to the
finals in Italy. The “Cinderella team” defeated
Sweden and Scotland that year but eventually
lost to Czechoslovakia. They wouldn’t return
to the Cup again until 2002 but due to a tough
group that included Brazil and Turkey, they were
sent home in the group phase.

Key Players: No secret about it – Costa Rica’s
star is Bryan Ruiz, a player that former coach
Rodrigo Kenton once called “a truly special
player”. Ruiz is ranked as one of the best
playmakers in the North, Central American and
Caribbean area but other quality performers
like Alvaro Saborio, Cristian Bolanos and goal
keeper Keilor Navas will also need to be utilized
if Los Ticos are looking to find victory in Brazil
this year.
ENGLAND
England has always been known for bringing
its A-game but their qualifying road to this
year’s World Cup was a rocky one – especially
when you consider they won all but one of
their qualifying games to enter 2010’s finals.
After two draws against rival Ukraine and
stalemates in Warsaw and Podgorcia, England
fans began to worry about their team’s World
Cup chances. However, in nail biting fashion,
England secured their spot in the 2014 World
Cup in the final match-day when the team
defeated Poland at Wembley.

The Three Lions, as England’s
team is known as, are
definitely no stranger to the
World Cup, having appeared
at seven of the last eight
Cups and qualifying for 13 in
total. In Africa four years ago,
England performed averagely,
eventually losing to Germany
in the final 16 round. England
has brought home World Cup
victory once before, in 1966,
when they hosted.
Key Players: With six goals in
World Cup qualifying games,
Wayne Roony is considered
England’s key payer.
Yet,
coach Roy Hodgson has other talented
players to help bring home victory at the
Cup – players like midfielders Gerrerd and
Frank Lampard, Daniel Sturridge and Danny
Welbeck, who came into his own during
qualifying rounds.
ITALY
If the qualifying rounds are any
indication, Italy has come to
this year’s World Cup ready to
dominate. Italy took control of
their tough European Group B
zone – a zone that consisted of
completive teams like Denmark,
the Czech Republic and
Bulgaria. The Italian national
team whizzed through the
qualifying rounds unbeaten and
secured their spot at the World
Cup with time to spare. New
coach Cesare Prandelli claimed
he was going to stay true to
Italy’s attacking style of play and
his commitment has paid off.
Yaya Toure

Nazionale, as the Italian team is known to
their fans, are second only to Brazil on the all-

time FIFA World Cup honors board. The Blue
Squadron, another fan nick-name, is also one of
the few teams to win the World Cup twice in a
row (1934 and 1938). Their 4-3 semi-final defeat
of West Germany in 1970 is widely regarded as
one of the most spectacular matches in the
history of the tournament. Italy recently took
home the World Cup trophy in 2006 – can they
do it again this year? The way this team has
been playing, their chances are high.
Key Players: The stars of Italy’s team are a
young bunch with only two members left from
the talented 2006 team: Captin and goalkeeper
Gianluigi Buffon and Andrea Pirlo. Among
the younger crop of players, central defender
Andrea Ranocchia and midfielder Marco
Verratti are ones to look for. Up front, Stephan
El Shaarawy and Giuseppe Rossi are a force to
be reckoned with.
