F R I DA G I A N N I N I ISSUE 111 SEPTEMBER 2014 FALL FASHION The journey the Italian fashion house Versace has taken throughout the years of Donatella’s reign has been immense. Though now sleeker and more edited than in previous collections, the brand’s distinctive mix of glamour and excess remains. This season, Donatella drew upon inspiration from the ’50s, with an unconventional twist. Boned corsets, rounded shoulder jackets, and large ball gowns were accented by golden belt buckles. A sequined gown with a sleeveless shoulder borrowed cues from a carefully rolled and tucked T-shirt, abstracted to achieve the Versace aesthetic. The show closed with an enormous duchesse satin ball gown, aggressively cut to reveal a Swarovski crystal bodysuit underneath. This displacement of fabric is a testament to Versace’s enduring commitment to upholding a forward-thinking approach—much like the inventive light fixtures of Spanish brand Marset, paired with looks here. —Justin Min SURFACE 90 PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID BRANDON GEETING STYLING BY JUSTIN MIN GUIDING LIGHT COUTURE COUTURE COUTURE All garments, Atelier Versace.
